My favorite bakery in The Heights! It is truly such a delicious amazing bakery that I have no complaints. Well that's a lie, my one complaint is that I wish the mini croissant cereal wasn't sold out so often! But how can I blame them because their stuff tastes SOOOO good? I've been to France multiple times and let me tell you this place is the real deal! The space is typical of any spot in the city, not super big. Expect when you come there will be a line because they are that good, so prepare yourself and don't be annoyed! Service is quick and kind! I drove all the way from NJ to Brooklyn to finally try L'Appartement 4F, and I'd say the trip was worth it. We arrived roughly an hour after they opened, and thankfully there wasn't a line. It was a weekday so I guess it's less busy. The bakery is charming, and since they have a few outdoor seats, we enjoyed the nice weather that morning. We tried several of their most popular pastries, starting with the almond raspberry croissant. The croissant was crispy on the outside, and perfectly flaky inside, with just the right amount of raspberry filling. It wasn't overly sweet, which I really appreciated. Next was the cinnamon roll. It was good, but it wasn't my favorite. Personally, I prefer the Radio bakery better. I like a cinnamon roll with a bit more structure and chew, while this one was very soft and fluffy. It's just a matter of personal preference. The chocolate chip cookie was excellent--chewy, rich, and exactly what you want from a great bakery cookie. On the other hand we also had the chocolate cookie that was very similar looking to the LU brand, but we didn't like it. To drink I ordered an iced almond milk latte. It was fine, but nothing particularly memorable compared to the pastries. I really enjoyed the visit. While L'Appartement 4F isn't my favorite bakery, everything we tried was well made and flavorful, and Im glad I made the drive to experience it. I like rose, but there's a fine line between "oh how lovely" and "this tastes like my grandma's soap." The chocolate croissant is good, not super memorable or anything to write home about. My personal favorites are the raspberry almond and the Nutella almond croissants. They also have a rose pistachio croissant that my friends really obsess over plus pistachio financiers for all you pistachio lovers. If you're looking for just classic French bread, they do have those available but limited quantities so you better go early in the morning. To avoid the long lines I highly suggest getting here before 9 AM. If the line seems short that means it IS short and you need to jump on it immediately or have regrets. They are now also open for wine bar nights Wednesday to Saturday, which I have been meaning to try. Sounds like a really cute date night idea. This bakery in Brooklyn is a super famous spot for its French aesthetic, amazing pastries/bread, and their viral croissant cereal. When I went, I got their almond raspberry croissant and their rose pistachio croissant, which were both pretty solid. Between the two, I did enjoy the almond raspberry more as the tartness of the raspberry cut the sweetness of the croissant (the pistachio rose got a bit overwhelming halfway through). I was skeptical about waiting in a line for a croissant. I'm glad I was proven wrong. The wait was quite a bit, but once we finally got inside we were able to quickly order our croissants. The lady at the register was helpful and polite. The space where you order is pretty small and a bit tight, but the steps to the left do lead to a small indoor seating space. If you'd rather be outside, there were a few tables on the sidewalk as well. The croissants we had at this place were deeelish. I was thrilled by this bakery but want to flag something important. One of the workers behind the counter was wearing a political shirt. The political stance that their appearance took, I do not agree with. I will not state their views or mine on this platform. However, I will say that it made me incredibly uncomfortable as a customer. During this current political climate it is understandable that businesses take a stand against the injustice they feel in this world. However, those that disagree have the right to voice their opinion. My secondary controversial take is that politics and food do not mix and my chocolate croissant was laced with democracy. We took our croissants to go as there was no open seating outside. Almond croissant was ok, I have definitely had better. The smell when you step into L'Appartemente 4F is just amazing - fresh bread hits your nostrils right away. I don't think their pastries blew my socks off the way Radio Bakery's do, but their basic croissant is definitely up there. They offer paper cups of water at the entrance and they have decent amount of seating upstairs that was fairly empty at 11AM on a Wednesday. Croissant (4/5): You can really taste the butter and it's definitely on the crispier side. It isn't quite as fluffy as I personally prefer, but still had a good amount of layers and airiness. I'm often disappointed by croissants and this one is certainly a solid version. Kouign-Amann (3.5/5): This one unfortunately was more of a let down. Felt a bit underbaked and was much doughier than you would expect and there was a bit too much sugar that wasn't caramelized on the outside. Overall, if I came back, I'd probably give their baguettes a go as they smelled incredible. Otherwise, they're solid, but not necessarily worth going out of your way for pastry wise. read more

Now that Mah Ze Dar is no longer in the west village, L'Appartement 4F (just around the corner) is a terrific substitute if not better. The bakery is located across from Jefferson Market Garden. While there might be lines they go fast. There are quite a few different varieties of croissants and a few that is not the norm at other bakeries. The croissants probably have a 1000 calories but who is counting when you are trying to treat yourself every now and then. The baguette itself is more of a traditional variety with the exterior being a bit more bite to it, so denser. Having been here a couple of times for croissants as well as baguette they can easily be the go to place for both. Service is efficient if you know what you want so study up ahead of time. Note there is no sit down, so it's grab and go. Don't bother going to the Garden next door since food is not allowed there. read more
