I saw egg tarts coming fresh out the oven ,it was a little before 4pm , I'll return to try them , they looked so glossy and smelled delicious. I had a hankering for ice cream . The menu listed 2 specials and one create your own with vanilla soft serve and a variety of toppings. I got the Match Blueberry pie soft serve . The matcha flavor was mild and didnt compete with the blueberry pie components, Very well balanced flavors without being overly sweet. Textural variances galore . I loved it. Was in NYC for work and as luck would have it, they had a special that I couldn't resist! I have already missed their Ube and Black sesame flavors before which I am kind of beating myself about so I didn't want to miss my chance at their Coconut Pandan Pastéis de Natas and Soft serve! There is absolutely nothing basic about their natas or their soft serves! So many textures and flavors: most dominant were of course coconut, pandan kaya jam, fresh pineapples, and toasted coconut flakes! I also tried their Pistachio flavor but the Coconut Pandan was clearly better. My only qualm was that the natas were quite goey and runny - which hasn't been my experience with Portugese egg tarts elsewhere. As soon as I bit in one of them, it completely fell apart and the entire filling just fell out. I like them a just a little firm - enough to easily bite into while keeping the pastry structure intact, if that makes sense. Otherwise, amazing flavors all around. Probably the best (and most expensive) egg tarts that I've had. Singles sell for $4.50 and there's a slight, increasing discount for 3, 6, and 12. I tried the classic, yuzu, caramel, and chocolate. All are great, but I think the classic is the best option. Filling is somehow creamy yet airy. A crisp eggy and custard flavor. The crust is ultra flakey. Like fresh croissant, flakes are going everywhere... flakey. Tasty little char on top with a caramelized kouign amann style finish on the bottom. It's an elite pastry. It's also very messy and not ideal for sharing. I nearly destroyed myself in caramel. I think the best way to eat them is to cram the entire tart into your mouth and enjoy at your preferred pace. Crust is so flakey and filling is so airy that it basically collapses like a black hole and becomes pretty manageable to chew entirely within seconds. The cafe is tucked away on the side of Saint John's Pl, off busy Franklin Av. It's mostly grab and go, with some limited seating outside. The pasteis are as delicious as I remembered them-- silky, creamy, pudding-soft custard center encased in a flaky pastry shell. They're even better if you grab one fresh out the oven. If you're not eating them right away, I highly recommend reheating them at home right before enjoying. Of the flavors I have tried thus far, I find myself gravitating towards the fruit flavored ones like yuzu and raspberry. Visiting the farmers market in Fort Greene Park is a favorite weekend ritual. One of my favorite's is Lisbonata. They are located on Dekalb Ave directly across from South Portland Ave. The Paste'is de Nata are so delicious. The custard filling incredibly creamy and smooth and the crust is crispy and flakey. They simply melt in your mouth and leave me wanting more. My favorites are the traditional and the pistachio. The servers are helpful and even if the line is long it moves quickly.
