When we got inside, we ordered the Souffle Egg Sandwich, Shakshuka Croissant Tart, Meyer Lemon Meringue Pie, and Cookie Butter Monkey Bread. The interior was tiny but we managed to snag a small table right away. The first item we tried was the Shakshuka Croissant Tart, which might have been my favorite. The pastry was perfectly flakey and I loved the runny egg with feta cheese. Next, we tried the Meyer Lemon Meringue Pie and Cookie Butter Monkey Bread. Both of these were awesome, although the monkey bread was a bit too decadent for me. Again, great textures all around! The Souffle Egg Sandwich sandwich took a while to come out, but was worth the wait. I loved the milk bread, and green sauce was the perfect tangy compliment to the creamy cheesy eggs. I recently went on a cinnamon roll crawl and our first stop was Hani's. The line was thankfully not too long and we were able to secure a malted cinnamon bun ($8.50) as well as a slice of their famous honey cake ($14). The bakery was packed inside so we opted to take our treats to Tompkins Sq Park to enjoy. I thought the cinnamon roll at Hani's looked gorgeous, with a smooth, thick malted frosting poured on top. But I felt the pastry underneath was actually the driest and most dense out of all the cinnamon rolls I tried that day. It lacked the lightness and fluffiness that I expected but I did like the flavor of the malted frosting. I had very high expectations for the honey cake as well, since it was listed on NYT's Top 25 Essential Pastry List but unfortunately the cake fell short for me. As someone who grew up eating medovik, I thought Hani's rendition veered too much on the tart side and the cake layers, again, were too dense and didn't melt in my mouth. Scene: Dreary rainy day. Almost all the seats in the cozy bakery were taken. I spotted one, and decided to order a hot chocolate. The counter person was exceptionally nice and welcoming. I felt better already after escaping the rain. The hot chocolate is very good, and thick, like European hot chocolate. I tried to decide among all the beautiful pastries after drinking the hot chocolate. I asked another customer and she said one can't go wrong with the triple chocolate chunk cookie. They always have several seasonal items, so there is always some new to try. They have a good mix of savory and sweet items, cake slices and even sandwiches. I heard a lot about this spot and when I randomly was in the area, my friend and I lined up to try it out. It was already 3pm, so not many items were available left. We ended up ordering the Pumpkin Spice Banana Bread and Pistachio Rice Krispie, both around $7-8 each. It's a pretty good-sized portion for the price, but didn't find the flavor to stand out much for me. My friend also ordered the Spicy Tuna Sandwich ($18), which was thick and filled. The spicy tuna flavor was delicious although messy to eat with the soft tuna and avocado mixture. Overall, I wasn't very impressed with Hani's, but I did like their atmosphere and aesthetics of the space. It's not fully clear what vibe Hani's is going after - I'd probably characterise it as "elevated nostalgia," but there are also some more nouveau items, especially on the savory side. We stuck more towards the nostalgia end and shared a cinnamon bun and brownie. The frosting on the cinnamon bun was a bit too much for me, and I definitely preferred the moist and rich classic brownie execution. The hot chocolate was good although perhaps a bit thick. First impressions - very cute setting, servers and baristas are super nice. I was undecided on what sweet to pick and the guy who helped me didn't rush me at all though I was standing to there deciding for almost a full 3 mins lol The Noms - I got their hot chocolate... it's sooo good, especially with the custardy tasting marshmellowy topping... it was good until it ran out towards the end and it was only hot chocolate, it was a little strong. I wish I could have asked for more of the whipped topping... next time! The hibiscus sugar morning bun was the one I ultimately decided on. I have heard great things about Hani but have always been turned off by the line that is always a few doors down on weekends. I finally decided to bite the bullet today and it was actually very quick, much quicker than it appears. I order 3 things and a match for around $35. I started with the cinnamon roll which is the main thing I came for but actually was my least favorite. If you love a ton of icing over bun ratio this would be for you but personally I thought it was too much and that it was more like a cinnamon dinner role. The next thing I had was the scone (maybe biscuit now that I think about it?) which was incredible, so moist, with sausage filling?! So good. The match was also incredible and I'm a sucker for a rice crispy treat, this one was giant, definitely could be shared between two. I love both the sweet and savory options at Hani's! The staff here always have the best recommendations when I ask for favorites. Here's some of my favorite pastries I've tried. -Paneer tikka pinwheel: The pinwheel is crispy on the outside with layers, like a croissant. And the paneer tikka filling adds a nice spice with a slight sweetness to it to balance it all out. -Turkey Swiss pinwheel: This is a fun take on turkey swiss flavor since it has gochujang, seaweed, and a little sweet and spicy flavor. I love the combination of all the flavors! -Cookie butter monkey bread: Absolutely delicious and filled with so much cookie butter. Also crispy on the outside, soft and layered on the inside. Even the inside is filled with cookie butter with some cinnamon mixed in as well. They only have this on weekends but definitely recommend! The staff also recommended the cinnamon bun which I haven't tried yet, but it seems to be a fan favorite. I love all the fun combinations of flavors in all the pastries. They do seem to have more unique takes on pastries, rather than having them all be the standard kind of pastry and flavor you can find anywhere. Oh, yum!! We came in for a mid-morning breakfast on a Monday--maybe around 10AM?--and that seemed to be the sweet spot for no waiting. We also got two sandwiches-an egg soufflé and a ham and cheese. For drinks we got hot lattes, the maple sea salt and a rose date latte. The cinnamon roll and egg sandwich were my favorites. The malt in the icing really grounded it and kept it from being too sweet. I would love to take one home and heat it up a bit. The condiments on the egg sandwich were warm and delicious!
