I was pleasantly surprised by my first experience here 2 weeks ago. I came alone and was immediately greeted with smiles and cheerful "Hello!"s from several staffmembers, even though it was very busy. My friend had recommended that I dine at L'Opera and mentioned a specific dish for me to try, and I had forgotten the name of the dish. The server was patient and took the time to really try to help me figure it out. I couldn't figure out which one it was, so I ended up ordering one of my favorite French breakfast sandwiches: Croq Madame. L'Opera did a fabulous job with it! Delicious! And I'm not usually into sweets but I decided to try their chocolate flan and that was marvelous! I look forward to coming back to dine here! read more

A wonderful welcome! An authentically French artisanal quality. David, his wife and son compete with each other in delicacy for the pleasure of their bakery and pastry customers or their hosts for breakfast or lunch. Their bread is unparalleled, my wife really enjoyed the salad from Nice, I enjoyed it with the Salmon Marmiton. Frequently, we enjoy Paris Brest, Eclairs au chocolat, the huge Meringues cooked just right or the Canneles Bordelais. This lunchtime, we also had the surprise of tasting for the first time in 5 years that we have lived in Sarasota: their excellent Muscadet sur Lie, their authentic real cider and a rare espresso. This bakery is excellent. My wife and I lived in Europe and travel to Montreal every year, almost primarily to eat pastries and desserts. We have been living in Sarasota since 2002, seeking excellent pastries. There are many good places in town but this place is the real deal. Chocolate croissant, almond croissant, baguette, pastries are all amazing. Every time we try to photograph them when we get home they are gone before we can get the camera out. We are so grateful that this amazing Place exists in Sarasota. The staff here is also very nice. The gentleman that works behind the counter is a real caretaker of the business. I believe they opened up about a month ago and the start has been very strong. All of their staple items are very solid. If you were located anywhere in Sarasota, this is the place to come to for French pastry. Amazing! read more

Our first visit here- where we expected to sit outside. Upon entry we were pleasantly greeted and helped. What a delicious lunch we had and brought home a baguette and mini eclairs! Everything was outstanding - and since there are numerous partitions and safety precautions everywhere we chose a small table inside and enjoyed our food. The mushroom omelet was amazing - and the salad was very well done as a side. The Croc Madame was also enjoyed- served with roasted French potatoes. Mixed review of a new restaurant, L'Opera Bakery Bistrot at 2336 Gulf Gate Drive. I had been there 2 times before, because it is a cute quiet place that serves breakfast and lunch. They have a variety of quiches and their omelets include bread (of course) and also a cup of coffee. On third visit, I went with a friend and we both ordered the veggie omelets. He asked for decaf coffee. But he was surprised at being charged for the coffee. It turns out that DECAF is extra. (No mention of this.) It is some kind of special decaf. Well apparently refills are not included, which is a judgment call, I suppose. So because my friend had 2 cups of decaf, he was charged for both. Not only that, but he was charged for the extra creamers! Asked to talk to David (the owner) and he would not budge. Really weird. I won't be back, but if you want to try it, be forewarned. read more

A guy from Toulouse just opened it. Veggie soup was watery and tasteless. Dessert case was minimal. No gateaux. The bread is outstanding and the croissants are authentic - very flaky. Deux pan bagnat, 2 crossaints, one macaroon = $39. Yikes. The type on the menu was so small and so light you need a telescope to read it. Not going back. Not recommending it. The current iteration of this bakery is a mixed bag! The baguettes are just as they should be... fresh, crunchy-crusted, flavorful, craveably delicious! Ditto the croissants, plain, indulgent almond and pain au chocolat. Some of their sweets are good as well but there have been some disappointments. The flans are dense and sadly lacking in flavor. Particularly disappointing was the chocolate flan, leaving one feeling the guilt of wasted calories! The eclairs are uninspired. I've not tried the hot foods they offer (soup, sandwiches, quiche) but as far as bakery goods go, I'd recommend the breads. read more

This is a new bakery and restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch. My husband and I have visited it twice, once for pastries and today for breakfast. Both times we have been delighted with the taste and freshness of our selections. The quiche and ham and cheese croissant we had for breakfast were great, but the potatoes were absolutely amazing! We have tried the chocolate and raspberry croissants and a chocolate eclair from the pastry counter and all were delicious! We also took home a wonderful baguette! We will definitely be back to try some of the other offerings! read more

Superb experience, after Joséphine's post I was a little reluctant about L'Ôpera Bakery Bistro. In the end I still wanted to make my own opinion and I'm very happy. The owner is very nice and all the products offered are of high quality. I was able to savor the Niçoise salad and different varieties of bread as well as pastry. I stumbled across this authentic French bakery/cafe looking for a decent sandwich for lunch. The front counter displayed an array of freshly baked bagettes, rustic breads and large pieces of meringue. Further inside, behind glass, were shelves of beautiful French patisserie -éclairs, fruit tarts, milles feuilles, petit fours, macaroons, assorted croissants etc. I ordered a tuna sandwich which came on a rustic baton with sliced hard boiled egg and a salad with vinaigrette on the side. In short, the sandwich was utterly fantastic and a very far cry from the usual tuna sandwiches out there. The fresh-from-oven floury, crusty, bread, the piquant tuna fish flakes lightly tossed in a mayo and egg slices and salad made for a "a great sandwich" lunch. I also tested a small raspberry tart with creme patisserie. This was also a dessert in a league of its own with fresh raspberries sitting on top of soft vanilla pastry cream and melt-in-the mouth pastry. My eyes wandered around and noticed a fresh homemade spinach soup, a blackboard of breakfast specialties like croque monsieur. So glad I found this gem of a cafe, in Gulf Gate today because I can not wait to return. read more

And yes, it is not American style coffee with refills...It is delicious authentic European style strong coffee! What a gem! The place is new and at 10:30 AM on a week day, wasn't crowded. The Croque Monsieur was tasty with just-right fried potatoes. Cafe latte was perfect! The owner was the server so there was much attention to detail. There was plenty of foot traffic with folks picking up a pastry or the beautiful, freshly baked bread.
