I was craving some tacos and found La Amistad as a local place to try. I saw some reviews and decided to give it a try! Despite placing my order and having a 15 minute wait time, I got there 5 minutes after my expected wait time and the order was not even close to completion. I had to wait another 10 minutes. The restaurant was not busy and it was a 2PM on a Saturday, so not necessarily the busiest time. I was pretty unimpressed with the tacos and guacamole. Everything lacked flavor and the tacos could have used more seasoning as well. It's safe to say the food was okay at best. One thing to note is that their online photo of their tacos look NOTHING like their actual tacos. I'm pretty sure it's a stock photo and there is no where indicated on the site that it's not their product. The tacos came with lettuce and tomatoes, which were fresh, but really threw off the flavor and taco experience. There was more lettuce than anything else. It was so disappointing to not get onion and cilantro with the tacos. I had the chicken taco dinner and added a steak taco for some variety. The refried beans were okay and the rice could have used more flavoring. The guacamole was missing lime and it was so bland. The prices for the food weren't bad. Overall, I don't think I'll be coming back here for a while. I'd like to check out other tacos with actual traditional recipes. read more

A hidden gem in ravenswood. La amistad really is a unique place. I will highly recommend the vegetarian / bean burrito. It tasted very good and the chips and salsa kept making my friend and I want more. The service was a little slow but, worth it since the food quality was one of best in my opinion. Little Mexican restaurant located on Montrose, just off the L stop. It's small and no frills, but that's definitely not a bad thing. I got the pechuga suiza dish, something I'd never had or even heard of before. It's basically grilled chicken but with melted cheese on top, and then served with rice and beans. It was very good, I'll definitely keep an eye out for it to order again, either here or at a different Mexican restaurant. Service was good, (then again we were the only people there late on a Monday night :p) They don't serve alcohol but it's BYOB. It's not far from Dovetail and Begyle Breweries, which are both BYOF, so this could be a good option if you want to bring some Mexican food there. read more

The food's okay, nothing special. And we ordered pick up today (2x tacos, 2x tostadas & 1 lg horchata), and were charged just over $26! After doing the math looks like we were over charged $6!! Unfortunately they didn't give my daughter a receipt and she didn't think to ask for one. When she told me what she was charged I knew it sounded like too much for what we ordered. I'm usually one to try and glorify restaurants cause I know it's hard work, but goodness the huevos rancheros I just received from La Amistad were atrocious. It's a staple dish I've tried a multitude of times and this was by far the worst I've ever experienced. The refried beans? Lacking salt. The rice? Lacking any semblance of flavor. The eggs? Poorly fried. And the "ranchero sauce" is clearly some kind of jar-salsa, my best guess would be Pace. This was simply not worth the money -- I'm honestly appalled that this is being charged for and served to customers. I sincerely hope other dishes are better. My favorite Mexican in the neighborhood. We stumbled upon this place on Cinco de Mayo when the much larger Mexican restaurant in the neighborhood had a 120-minute wait. I'm so glad we found it, because now it's our go-to. Today we ventured out and got an appetizer because we were starving. We settled on splitting El Trio: one tamale, one quesadilla, and "nachos." The tamale was packed with chicken and spicy green salsa, the quesadilla was loaded with cheese, and the nachos were.... Well, they weren't what we were expecting. There were FOUR chips. They were topped with beans, guacamole, cheese, pico de gallo and sour cream, and they were fantastic. However, it's totally not what you think you're getting. For the main meal, I always get one chicken taco and one steak taco. These things are FILLED with meat. Probably enough meat to fill two tacos each, and it's cooked so perfectly. I absolutely love it. My boyfriend always gets the steak burrito because of the same reason. The burritos probably have about 8 tacos full of meat. It seems like a whole cow was sacrificed to make a single burrito. No joke. For cheap, quick and superb food you can't get better than Amistad. However, it's only 4-stars because it's a much better experience if you do take out. If you sit and dine, we once had tacos take over 45 minutes to come out. It's just very, very, VERY slow service. I've given this place way too many chances. The food, overall, is good when you dine in. Service is iffy (and I say this when I visited during non-peak hours, AKA a weekday afternoon.) Dining out/delivery? Horrific. They have gotten my orders incorrect, forgot items in my order, didn't read the directions I specified under 'Special Instructions' and delivery time has been ridiculous. This current (and definitely LAST) order was placed at 5:15pm today. It has still not arrived and I live less than 10 minutes from this place. I called after an hour and fifteen minutes and after being placed on hold by two separate people, they said 15 minutes...which gives me the impression that they completely forgot about my order. Yep. Last time. UPDATE: Order arrived at 6:55pm, but, yet again, one of the items I ordered was missing. I called and the woman who answered said they would have the delivery person bring it to me. Almost an hour later after that call...nothing. And the worst part of all this...I was looking forward to eating their Chocolate Mousse Cake with Raspberry Sauce....and there is NO raspberry sauce. Well, I am still searching for that perfect taqueria in the Ravenswood corridor. La Amistad is solid but doesn't quite stack up to the double-headed monster up on Lawrence. Erick's has better guacamole and Taco Place & Steak House has better tacos and more variety. One thing that I will say about La Amistad is that their torta is delicious--hold the sour cream please. The bread is too dry though, bordering on stale around the edges. I also appreciate the presence of a chile relleno taco, which you don't see at many places. And they have daily meal specials which include rice and beans. Another great thing is that an order of guacamole is a generous container of the dip and a whole brown sack full of chips. No skimping = two days of guacamole pleasure = happy customer! And don't get me wrong--the food is all pretty swell: very good guacamole, solid tacos, nice chips, that tasty torta. The chorizo meat is the least greasy chorizo within miles but packs a lot of flavor. Pollo is okay, al pastor is okay, carne asada is...gristly and not the best. So they do a lot of things well; they just don't do any single thing better than other joints. Love this place! I have been a loyal customer to La Amistad for years! It's changed owners a few time, but the good thing is that every new owner keeps the menu pretty intact. They continue with the same amazing recipes, and buyers. It's located in ravenswood which is a hip neighborhood that has a lot of restaurants around. La Amistad stands out from the rest because of their gourmet Mexican food. They have such unique plates that taste very different from all other taquerias. This place actually cares about the ingredients they serve. Their rice is home made which is delicious, their beans are also home made, the guacamole is made to order, it's super fresh. The tacos are perfectly proportioned, just the right amount of meat, tortilla size, and salsas on the side which are also their own recipes. They have street parking, the cutest outside patio.
