No background music, etc. The beet salad with pork belly was well presented and had great flavors. The lamb chops and Veal were outstanding and generous portions. Save room for the warm chocolate cake (in puff pastry), a delightful twist to this classic. Fair priced wine list. We had a very disappointing dinner there last night. Very poor service. We had to wait for drinks (which came after our appetizers) and spent the entire night looking for the waitress. The food was good but not great. Salmon was fatty. Whitefish great. Perhaps it was an exceptionally busy night for the restaurant and they just need to get organized. Always a great dinner, wine selection, dessert. Normally get fish, but went with beef tenderloin this time cooked perfectly to a medium rare/rare finish. My wife loves the lamb chops which is her go to dish there. Service Staff was great and they were also very accommodating of changes in reservation count and reservation time in high season. Even adjusting expectations for the small-town locale, this was disappointing French food. We weren't sure if this was an attempt to appeal to Midwestern clients, but several dishes were unexpectedly and unwelcomely sweet, most notably the crust on the fish, which was delicate enough but so sweet, I had to scrape it off completely. The wine list wasn't bad but don't expect knowledgeable advice on it or the cheese plate, although service overall is friendly and prompt. read more

I have been coming to this area for years as my husband's family has a cottage here and have always wanted to try this restaurant. To my delight, we were able to get a reservation this evening and I was beyond excited to finally try it! Unfortunately, that feeling did not last through the evening. Don't get me wrong, the food was good, but it was some of the worst service I've ever received. While the waiter seemed pleasant enough, we did not see much of him. Our drinks were never refilled until we caught him and specifically asked. He never brought plates for our bread, although we did note the bill came on a plate! We recieved our side dish after we had finished our entrees and were so discouraged at the end that we opted against ordering dessert. It also was not lost upon us that most of the place had emptied by the time our meal was over about two hours later. Please understand that I rarely feel compelled enough to compose a bad review, and if this server had so much as apologized once or mentioned that we needed more attention I would not have, but unfortunately that was not the case. This is one if the few times I have not felt bad leaving a bad tip. read more

What a great meal. We had scallops and mussels for starters. They have creative cocktails with this course. Our main courses were lamb chops and pork tenderloin. Both were perfectly cooked. The room is decorated tastefully. The service was friendly and efficient and quite smooth. This has become one of our favorite TC area restaurants. read more

I felt compelled to write this review after a truly uncomfortable and frustrating dinner last night. It started off great with a well-versed and attentive waiter, Bill. He was friendly and was great throughout the night. As we ordered, we informed him that we have an UpNorthLive coupon to avoid any complications later in the night. He said that it shouldn't be a problem. My wife ordered a soup and an appetizer for her meal, while I ordered one of their entrees (the rack of lamb). After my wife had almost completely ate her soup, we heard the manager in the background complain about the coupon with our waiter. It's a small restaurant. Bill, minutes later, came to our table and informed us that the manager stated that we had to order two entrees to redeem our coupon. He then explained that my wife could upgrade her appetizer (scallops) to an entree. Unfortunately though, my wife wouldn't have ordered a soup, if we were aware of this. The language of the coupon was very ambiguous with this aspect, which is why we presented it early. Bill left to see what he could do. He said that we would get comped for the soup. This was awesome and reflected his care for the situation. The manager walked around the room talking with guests in the meantime. At one point, she was two feet from us. However, she never said anything to us. She didn't apologize for the situation, see how we were doing, etc. As for our food, it was fine. It wasn't as good as the previous time, but it was okay. We paid the bill and tipped Bill well for his help. He did the best with the situation, but was caught in the middle between us and the manager. The manager instead complained about us, refused to talk to us the whole night, and made us feel unwanted. I get that maybe there was some confusion, maybe on our end, with the coupon. That's why we presented it early and would have loved to just have a conversation with her to clear it up. We enjoyed this restaurant before, but won't go back now because of how rude the manager was. It is sad because it could have been easily avoidable too. read more

Excellent food. Steamed mussels were in a wonderful delicious sauce with fresh garlic. Great and large selection of wine. Main dish was halibut topped with baked breading and lemony sauce. Amazing experience. My wife and I dined here last night on our memorial weekend getaway. I had the Duck Duo which was just succulent. My wife had the pork tenderloin and she said it was the best pork she had ever had. But the big kicker was the Warm chocolate cake. No words can describe this, it was that good. labecasse is a quaint country-style french restaurant located in a small cottage in maple city. The layout isn't overly pretentious nor does it boast an incredibly "high-class" ambiance like you might be used to in other similarly priced chains. However, the simplicity in seating is contrasted beautifully by complex dishes made from locally bought, freshly prepared food. It becomes clear immediately that you've stumbled upon a gem of a restaurant tucked away in the backwoods. The wine list is also excellent. The service was prompt and friendly. The executive chef personally comes out to check on you. Although expensive, you will be left feeling like you just ate at one of the finest restaurants in any city, located in a small country house. Overall, this was a wonderful restaurant and we would recommend it to anybody looking for a unique, fine dining, experience. read more

So looking forward to dining at this restaurant and it was a such a disappointment! The fresh salad was tasty, however, everything after was fair. My husband and I noticed that all other tables had a basket of French bread except ours. We asked our waiter for some bread and he apologized by sayings things got really busy. Ours entrees arrived next, Hanger Steak and Salmon. The Hanger Steak was tough and the Salmon was dry. The potato Dauphinoise was very good, but nothing else was memorable from either of our dishes. Be Careful Here This was our second time eating here. I always say you have to eat at a place at least 3 times for a good review. However, in this case, I am writing the review now as I may not come back here, at least in spider season. I have given this 2 stars but I agree the food is good, not great by any means, but good and for the most part the menu is indeed interesting. Here is something every potential customer should be aware. It is a small restaurant as advertised with old type pane windows for character. The building is quite cozy, the problem is the windows inside are not cleaned. Insects can be found everywhere inside the window curtains... and I mean inside. Where there are bugs there are spiders to eat them, big spiders to eat them. A spider found himself on the arm of a lady at the next table and her husband smacked the thing to the floor toward our table. My wife was uncomfortable worrying about the spider the rest of the evening. Incredibly enough the couple informed us that they eat here all the time and love the place. So I can understand the great reviews, they have a regular customer base who love the place. I am still shocked nobody has brought up the filthy window sills so I feel I have to do it. As for the food, again I can believe you could get a great meal here or not. My wife and I had the duck and it was not even close to other fine restaurants that make signature duck dishes. My cousin had White Fish and it was very good for sure. I want to be fair here but I feel that the spider stuff has to be taken care of. read more

When prepared properly, confit de canard is delectable. Its crisp skin crackles when bitten into, and its meat is so succulent and tender that it nearly melts in your mouth. The confit I was served at La Bécasse was nothing like that. IT WAS EMBARRASSINGLY TERRIBLE. The meat was cool and stiff, and the skin was somewhere between rubber and leather. IT WAS SHOCKINGLY BAD. It is not possible that a Frenchman, trained as a chef in Lyon, influenced by "his mother's renditions of the country foods typical of her childhood home in the east of France", would allow such a thing to leave his kitchen. So it was no surprise to learn that the chef/owner was not there. But how is it possible that the chef/owner does not show up for work on a Saturday night, during the peak Fall color weekend of the year? This is not a good sign for La Bécasse. The waiter had a second confit prepared, but astonishingly, it was even worse than the first one. It was not just bone dry, but halfway cremated out of existence. I did eat the other half of my duck duo meal, the magret de canard, but it was unevenly cooked, and wholly unremarkable. The poor quality of my meal shattered any illusion I had of "being lost in the French country side". Instead, it brought into focus the fact that I was seriously overpaying for below-average food in a concrete block shack, in the middle of nowhere, with stained fiberglass ceiling tiles, partially out-of-order bathrooms in desperate need of renovation, and small insects buzzing around my head. Am I being too harsh? Not for a restaurant that hypes itself like this one does, and charges the prices it does. Here's the thing: confit de canard and magret de canard are not that hard to prepare correctly. The fact that the kitchen got it wrong twice in a row is not a coincidence: it's a problem. We will not return. And unless the chef/owner returns to the kitchen himself, and fixes whatever is going wrong in there, neither should you. read more

We were a group of six who love to cook and have traveled extensively and enjoy sampling all types of food. The service was gracious. The amuse bouche was delicious and the house salad was delightful. The 3 men opted for the rack of lamb which they said was near perfect. Two of the women in our party had the whitefish with remoulade sauce. The fish was very good but the remoulade tasted like a tartar sauce with too much vinegar. We asked for a different sauce and the server graciously brought us the veloute (?) sauce which was a much better compliment to the fish. The low points and reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 was the risotto. It was like a mushy cream of wheat. It was obvious that they did not use the correct rice and the morels were few and far between, Plus the butternut squash puree was watery and unappealing. It was a complete disappointment especially considering this was a main dish and quite expensive. The bread was unexceptional as was the butter. The chocolate lava cake and the creme brulee were excellet but the tarte tatin was not. read more

Went to Le Becasse tonight for anniversary and hoped to experience a charming and delicious meal like we've had in France. Not quite. Highlights: very nice waitress. Fish special was very good. Low points: waited more than 5 minutes in the middle of the awkward dining room before we were even acknowledged by an unsmiling hostess (chef/owner was standing 1 foot away but was too busy talking to notice). Restaurant is unattractive: curtains in front of doorways, no place to stand while you wait, very old windows with serious drafts, and rec-room Armstrong drop ceiling. It looks like an old cinder block roadhouse dressed up with a coat of white paint. Ordered the duck, it was tough. Ordered the Pinot Noir to go with tough duck; they were "out". Ordered the dessert special; they were out of it, too. Ordered coffee; it tasted like tea and was actually cold. So many restaurants are so much better in and around the TC area, especially at this price point (Cook's House, for example). I think the chef (who schmoozed all night with the captivated locals) needs to be more attentive to his restaurant's interiors, cooking, and procurement. Overrated and disappointing. read more

I had made my reservation thru the Labecasse Restaurant web site on Open Table for our 9th anniversary. I received confirmation from Open Table for a 6pm reservation and even received an updated email the day before reconfirming our reservation. We arrive on time and are informed by the staff that our reservation is for 8pm. I'm not sure where the fault lies but it almost wreck the evening. The staff did offer us a table on the "patio" which was not acceptable. The staff at the Labecasse did leave a voice message later that they had a table open for us at 7pm but by then the staff at Nonna's in the Homestead Resort had made room for us and we enjoyed a great Italian dinner. Would have prefered to enjoy what I believed would have been a great French country meal but that didn't happen. I will not us Open Table in the future but talk directly with the staff at any restaurant and I will not return to Labecasse. read more
