From Chicago, just moved to Kyle. We were in Austin and stumbled into lB for lunch. Here are some thoughts: -If this is average barbecue, then average barbecue in Texas is way better than great barbecue in Illinois! -There was a long line out the door on a hot afternoon. Luckily, they had ice water available. Line moves slowly. -Once we got inside, we were happy we waited. I got the beef brisket sandwich (9-10/10) with extra pickles and my wife got the pulled pork (7-8/10) with pickles and onions. -The beef brisket was so good it didn't need barbecue sauce : ) The pulled pork had a very strong pepper taste. -We also got a big pickle (4-5/10) as a side. I love pickles, but this one was average. -Service and price were both good. Highly, highly recommended!!
We really liked la Barbecue, although we weren't sure what made it worthy of a Michelin star. I couldn't find specifics when I looked it up. We realized the strategy was to order for pickup a day in advance so we wouldn't have to wait in the long line. We were 15 minutes late for our pickup time, and the food still wasn't ready. However, we waited five more minutes, and they gave us a full-sized bottle of barbecue sauce, which kind of made up for it. I also wasn't sure if they would've hurried up if we had arrived earlier. We ordered the sliced brisket sandwich, El Sancho Loco, and a pint of "shells & cheese." The sandwiches were really good, and the Sancho Loco sandwich was special in that it had chopped brisket, pulled pork, and sausage with red onions. The brisket was soft and juicy. The mac and cheese was great too. It had a unique spice to it from the poblanos. We enjoyed the tangy barbecue sauce that came in the bottle as well as a more smokey barbecue sauce that came in a small side cup. Our total was $48, and this was a good portion size for two people.
The food was good, the ambiance is questionable, and when you do finally get inside for service it was perfect. I personally didn't like the waiting period, most BBQ places that have an hour wait time are possibly under a canopy or have water close by or have somewhere to at least lean. This place had none. I am glad I went so I could check it off the list but I'd only comeback if I wanted to eat at an odd time of weekday and in the area. Pretty good coffee shop and brewery walking distance too!
It was ok. I gave it a little bit of a higher review because nothing was really that bad, but I was not impressed. It was good, but not Michelin quality. First of all, this place has a super small ordering area. While I appreciated the efficiency of the ordering once I got in there, they can only take one order at a time. This means that lines snake outside the place and it can take forever to order. I waited in line for about an hour. Not great, but not a dealbreaker. As for the food, the brisket and chipotle sausage were lukewarm by the time I got it to the table. I think they slice and handle the meats so much that it cools quicker. The meats tasted good, but the temperature might be the problem. The sausage was also way too crumbly, but it tasted great! The presentation of the meats could have been better, especially with LeRoy's doing it elevated. I really liked the mac and cheese. That was hot! I actually disliked the BBQ sauces. The original was fine, but the rest were too vinegary. People talk about the service being great. Maybe I was there on a bad day because the service was average. I didn't have an issue, but they didn't wow me. I also found out that I was supposed to get free beer? Where? Why did nobody tell me this? The one saving grace was compared to other higher end BBQ spots, this place was more economical. I paid about $30 for two meats, a drink, and a side. Not too bad! I think I wanted to like this place more, but was disappointed. I gave it a 4 because it was fine and had some good meats. However, it's not as good as LeRoy and I don't know why it (and Interstellar) have a star in the first place. It was fun to try, but I think I'm a one and done
I found bbq SO DIFFICULT to acquire in Austin, even though it's around every corner. The barbecue places tend to be so popular that they either sell out or are closed on odd days. We visited La Barbecue, unplanned, on a suggestion from a local friend. You definitely have to have patience as we waited in line for about an hour before ordering and sitting down. There is a line that forms outside in the hot sun as they only let one customer group in at a time to order at the counter . However, they are thoughtful and they have some complementary umbrellas to help shade you while you're standing outside. Once you get inside the process includes ordering at the register, paying at the register and they will bring it out to your table. We arrived and joined the line around 1 PM and eat around 2 PM. By the time we ordered they added three items to the out of stock list (including the one item I was interested in). The food was fine for me. I'm sure it's so popular because it's amazing to people that love barbecue. I did enjoy the mac & cheese and the slices of bread that I ordered on the side. Overall, give yourself some extra time for parking in the tight parking lot adjacent as well as to wait in line for your food. Arrive early maybe that helps with reducing the wait time!
I was so eager to try La Barbeque after its recent Michelin star acquisition! We got there shortly before 5pm but the line was already out the door and they'd run out of everything except pulled pork and chili. This was a bummer, but we made the best of it and had pulled pork sandwiches + a pint of chili to share. Pulled pork was tender and good, but the chili to me was the winner. Super flavorful and very delicious! Sides were average IMO - potato salad was too mustard heavy for my liking and black beans were just basic, nothing special. We didn't take advantage of this but they also offer customers free beer with the meal. Make sure you do your research and arrive here early if you want to try the chopped brisket which is what they're actually known for! We will be back to give it another try.
Delicious BBQ! I had the brisket and sausage and both were very flavorful and tender. I ordered my food ahead of time so didn't have to wait in line at all and they sliced it fresh upon arrival. One quick warning for anyone allergic to dairy - I had a reaction after eating this, I believe from the original sausage (it is fully my fault, I didn't even consider that a regular non-cheese sausage would have dairy so not blaming them at all) but just be careful and ask before ordering!
I'm grateful that they allow you to order ahead and pick up when you get there. The process was super convenient. However, my meal was hit and miss. The hits: Brisket - absolutely amazing. One of the best I've ever had. Mac&Cheese- I would come back to Austin just for this Mac& cheese. The misses: Sausage- skin was tough, it wasn't sliced and the meat was dry. One of the worst I've had from a bbq place-bordering on criminal. Beans- avoid! No flavor at all. Not even salt. I ate about as much as what you see on the picture. Bread charge- just charge me more for the meat . Why charge for something that should come standard. Not going to break the bank but it was weird. Was I glad I tried it? Yes. Do I recommend this place? Yes as they could've had a bad day with the sausage. 5 stars for the brisket, Mac and ordering ahead (with no minimum). The beans and sausage dropped it down to 3.
The wait was about 35 minutes on a Wednesday but well worth it. You only enter for service when given the signal and there is a no nonsense approach (which I loved). The turkey was moist, perfectly seasoned (no sauce required), and served on a potato roll. The chipotle slaw has the right amount of spice and was not overly wet! The shells and cheese was wonderfully balanced. While the location is small there is plenty of outdoor seating! And I can see why they earned a Michelin star - highly recommend!
My friend and I headed over to la Barbecue (that's pronounced L.A. not like lala land) after hearing that their BBQ is the best in Austin! Now when doing BBQ spots in Austin, everyone wants to know about the wait! We went on a Saturday right around Noon and ended up waiting 90 minutes in line to order. Their playlist was soooo~ good though! Myself and others in line were boppin' to Keyshia Cole & Billie Eilish which made the wait not half bad. The brisket is nice and juicy. Pork ribs were also nicely seasoned, plump and lovely. I really like that they had 4 options of BBQ sauces and enjoyed trying them all. Admittedly though I enjoyed the basic one the best on my proteins. The mac & cheese was spicy and so cheesy, loved this and enjoyed it as leftovers, too! And then I met my match. They only serve the Beef Ribs on weekends (Fri, Sat, Sun) and I so highly recommend them. Oh my goodness, it was the best thing ever. The thick crust was so full of well seasoned flavor, it was heavenly. I wish I could eat this every day for the rest of my life. Open a LA la Barbecue please! :P Staff was nice, food was worth the wait and even the bathrooms were cool here.
Brisket A+ moist, consist throughout, just missing a little kick on the bark like Franklin Pork B- just not hittin with smoke/flavor Pork Rib A+ fall off the bone, great sauces flavor Shells- A really good, had that south west spice and some peppers on there that were good. The line moved in a real weird way only letting one ordering group inside at a time. I could see how this might be frustrating if you were deep in the line. But I had a great experience!

Omg, this is the spot! Truly legit brisket. The most melt in your mouth jalapeño sausage ... it is a must try. Outstanding. The Mac n cheese is the creamy good kind. We had a pork rib too. Go sample a few things and you will dream about what to come back for! read more
On a Friday afternoon we waited about 45 minutes in line. It was raining but luckily they let everyone line up under the patio and turned the heaters on so not too bad! Trust me when I say it's worth the wait. Yes the place is small, but the service is so quick that I don't think people really stay for long. A table was open the whole time we were here and the line kept growing. So no need to stress about finding space for your group! Let me just say, this is the best barbecue I've ever had, hands down. If you're not sure what to order, get the brisket. I cannot emphasize enough how deliciously tender and flavorful it is. You don't even need a knife to pull it apart. I also recommend the pulled pork sandwich. I don't think you could go wrong ordering anything here. read more
This place was well worth the wait. The wait is part of the experience. The anticipation you have while getting increasingly hungry by the nearby BBQ smells as you inch closer and closer. The best part of the wait was the guy who goes through the line to take orders for alcohol. It was so cool being able to drink a beer in the line outside. My girlfriend and I shared the half pound of brisket. It was incredible. I also got the shells and cheese side which was delicious. I didn't like the chipotle slaw. Pro tip: If you are waiting in line with someone else, have one of you go to the nearby Mexican spot called Juan in a Million to get a few tacos to eat while in line. That's what we did and it was a perfect way to pre-game. read more

Please be aware that if you are in line, which could wrap around the corner... it will take you more than 1 hour to reach the front door.... If you reached the corner... that will be 30 minutes minimum... if you are 1/2 a block away from the door... it will take you 1.5 hours to get to the front.. read more

Updated review: Came in on a Friday afternoon and stood in line for about 45 mins. Since there was a long wait, they had beer service and while standing in line which was cool. Let's get to the good part: Brisket: Nice and tender, great flavor and done well. 4 of 5 stars Turkey: This was good but it got a tad dry in short amount of time. 3 of 5 stars Pork Ribs: Yup, they did this right! Amazing flavor and melts in your mouth. 5 of 5 stars! Shells and cheese: Yup, this is also a must! Creamy goodness! 5 of 5 stars! Jalapeño Sausage: You better get one! Do it now and thank me later. 5 or 5 stars! If I had to pick my favorite, it's the Ribs and shells and cheese with a jalapeño sausage for me. read more

Some of the best brisket you can find in the state. Don't feel like waiting five hours for Franklin's or Snow's? Come here instead - you'll wait around an hour most days. The brisket is just as good as the others, in my opinion. The sides here are also killer - there's mashed potatoes, kimchi, and more. The kimchi is a great palette cleanser if you are trying multiple things here and you want to get the best flavor possible. read more

If I could give 6 stars, I would! We live in Austin and this has been our favorite BBQ joint so far (it seems like a never-ending list). The food is top notch and many of their meats carry a little bit of a kick. Everything is so full of flavor. In my opinion, they have the best sides of any of the BBQ restaurants. They do the classics (mac&Cheese, pickles & onions, corn bread, collards, beans, slaw) and they do them SO WELL! Every time we have people come into town, we take them to La BBQ and it's always a highlight of their entire trip. read more
I know it's heretical to recommend a barbecue place as a vegan, but hear me out. They've got the cocktail game on lock here. You've got a wide range of classics, but why get the same old thing when you can enjoy a creative twist? The Sotol'd Fashioned replaces bourbon with sotol, a spirit similar to tequila made with a different desert shrub. It's rich, bold, but balanced. Pair that with their housemade pickles, and you can't knock that combo for an excellent happy hour. Start your night here and then hop across the street for tacos at Vegan Nom after. read more
This place was hyped up a lot by a friend who lives in the area, basically saying this is the best bbq place in the area. Here are my thoughts: Brisket: I got 1 moist and 1 lean piece, 1/2 lb total. It was all tender and went well with the dark sweet sauce they had on the table (none of the sauces were labeled). The meat had good flavor. I also tried the ribs, and they were unfortunately pretty run of the mill. The turkey I tried had a nice smoked flavor to it. The mac & cheese was al dente, and had a slight kick to it from the peppers they added - I thought it was very good. The cheese sauce was rich and thick. It was definitely a solid, tasty meal, but I wasn't completely blown away by any means. I do recommend eating here! I just think it may be slightly overhyped. read more
Really tasty brisket. It was our first meal in Austin and we all loved it. Fatty and tender in all the right ways. The inside was cool cause they had big tables with plenty of seating for my bachelor party. And clean up was super easy too. Glad we ate here. read more
1/13/2024 la Barbecue 2401 E Cesar Chavez Austin, TX 78702 We were taken here by our Austin host on a Saturday about a half hour before they opened to avoid waiting. We were able to be second to enter the order and pick up area. Only one party is permitted to enter at a time. You order from a large menu card at the counter and pay. Our selections were prepared at the same counter and plopped on a large butcher paper layered tray. We decided to eat outside where there was a station of folded butcher paper for plates, setups and water. We ordered the Brisket, Beef Rib, Pork Ribs, Jalapeno Sausage and a couple of sides. All the meats were very moist, fall of the bone and fall apart tender. The Brisket was impressively moist through the entire cut. The sausage was very tasty and juicy. The smoke level was on the mild side. The rub crusts were on the salty side and my preference would be more brown sugar and Cayenne pepper for heat. The available sauces were vinegary and unremarkable but one doesn't really need them. By the time we left there was a long line waiting to order. The quality of the meats was exceptional. This one of the best BBQ places I have experienced although I would prefer a slight adjustment to the rubs. Definitely repeatable. read more
Went this evening for a quick bite. We got there at 5pm and they close at 6pm so no surprise that most of the meats were sold out. I got the chopped brisket and tater salad. It was good and was a nice portion. The tater salad was good as well. They have off the street parking which was very nice. It's a cute place and we will have to go back a try more of the options. read more

First meal after arriving in Austin has to be BBQ right? Tough choice between better known guaranteed line up Franklin or lesser known maybe-line La Barbecue. Obviously went with the latter and as our Uber ride pulled up, saw the line up. I'd say about 20 patrons ahead of us. That's not bad, great decision!. WRONG. Apparently serving 20 patrons took 90 minutes. One group in at a time and the 6ish ppl behind the counter were taking their sweet island time not because they are busy but because they can. I honestly think it is part of the marketing gimmick. Make ppl wait in the Texas heat so a line can visibly be seen from the outside adding to the perceived value. The seating inside and outside were barely occupied so it ain't the space! Anyway, to the food. We had 1lb brisket, 4 pieces of ribs, 1/2 lb pulled pork, jalapeño sausage, Mac n cheese and pickled red onion. $130 to feed 2 adults and 2 kids under 12. Brisket - very tender and beautifully smoked. Great flavor. Not the best I've had but very good. Ribs - best ribs I've had hands down. Meet fell right off and the seasoning was spot on. Pulled pork - avoid at all cost. Very dry, not finely chopped and way too salty Sausage - it packed a ton of heat. Super spicy but not enough flavor. Sides - average relative to other famous bbq joints. read more

Have not had the opportunity to try a ton of barbecue in Austin and La Barbecue certainly did not disappoint. I went on a Sunday around 2pm and had to wait about 35 minutes to be served. This waiting time is not terrible considering other spots around town but also not quick. Upon taking your order they immediately serve you which is quite cool. They have a considerable amount of outdoor seating but it was too cold for that so we sat inside; interior is small and nothing extraordinary with classic wood and metal accents and a rustic modern feel which was nice. When it comes to food I thought the sausage was the star of the meats I ordered. Somewhat spicy, the sausage melted in your moth and had a depth of flavor and spices which were so delicious. The brisket was good but not as rare as I would typically like. Lastly for the meats, pork ribs were decent. With lots of little bones in them it was common for me to pick them out after taking a bit. The meat was tender and occasionally fell off the bone but coming from St. Louis, MO I have had far better. Last thing I will add is while there was a barbecue sauce I liked, I expected some more options such as a spicier or more mustard based sauce but did not see that as an option. Now for the sides, mac and cheese was a hit; kind of spicy and came with some delicious cheese. Potato salad was refreshing and relatively mild, nothing to write home about for me. Pickled onions and jalapeños were also fairly good to break up the meats. As barbecue can be know for it was quite expensive totaling about $91 for what is pictured so for that reason combined with what I mentioned above I give this place 4 stars. Would definitely go back and order some more things and I certainly recommend the sausage. read more

It was raining when I arrived and the orderly line was of course lined up under the shelter where the tables are located. An employee then came out and said "I know it's raining, but we need you to line up outside and not under the shelter." I thought it but someone said it "What is the problem with us trying to stay dry?". I'm not aware of and doubt there are patio fire codes and saw nothing posted about number of people allowed on the non-elevated patio. After 30 minutes you can see in the attached photo how crazy it was on the patio. At 11:00 they opened, but only one person or groups that are together are allowed inside at a time. When you are waved in, there are five employees ready to help you. Five seems like a lot, and most of the time three of the employees are standing/dancing/playing on phone, waiting for the one group to come to their station. Employee morale must be awesome and there must always be a line outside the door with such a system of service. Do not check out this place if the weather is not ideal. People compared this to Franklin's but the offer chairs, have fans installed outside, and allow the line to go inside. I guess if you wait long enough, you get custom five on one experience which would be nice if there wasn't a line caused by such a ratio. read more

Great BBQ in Austin! I love the order ahead option. It came in handy to make sure our food was ready when we arrived before heading to the airport. The bbq was delicious but I will say it's super peppery. If you don't like pepper I don't think you'd like it. I thought it was delicious though and would come back to try the sandwiches as well. read more

La Barbecue, what a cool name for a cool place and I mean that in a literal way as this place has "misters"!! Outside! Meaning that if there is a line you will be sprayed like a vegetable in the produce aisle with cool water!!! Arrived at La Barbecue on a Wednesday around 1:45pm on a Wednesday. This place is down the road from Franklin's BBQ. There was NO line at this time!! So, husband and I are driving around Texas eating at ALL the BBQ places on the Texas Monthly Top 50. And this place was the third place that we ate at on a Wednesday in early June. 1st you need to note that they have a new location at 2401 E Cesar Chavez Austin, TX -- 78702 !!! 2nd the parking lot here is free but it is small. 3rd they do NOT take AMERICAN Express Card!!! All other cards yes! 4th the brisket here is delicious and you can cut it like butter! It is that tender and delicious. We also got chipotle sausage and pork ribs. We got no sides as we were eating a lot of BBQ this day. 5th please note they do charge for the pickles(2.00) & potato bread(.50) 6. this place is female owned!!! All was delicious and fabulous here and I highly recommend this place for great Texas BBQ. read more
This was our first meal in Austin, Texas. Our Uber driver recommended this place. We got there at 5pm and all that was left was the pulled pork, chopped brisket and sausages. We got the pulled pork sandwich and the chopped brisket sandwich. The meat was juicy and tender. The brisket however, was a bit on the greasy side for me. I also liked the sauces they had available on the side. One was spicy and the other one was like a bbq sauce. The white peach oblong tea was my favorite. It's from a local brewer. My boyfriend got me an extra one to bring back to the hotel! I heard the spare ribs are amazing and the lines are wrapped around the restaurant when it first opens. la Barbecue is in the upper echelon of brisket in Austin. The lines can get a bit long, but they're within the edge of being manageable. It has an optimal meat quality to wait time ratio. While you're waiting, you'll smell wafts of post oak smoke. Occasionally, people pop out of line and head across the street to pick up cool refreshments to make the wait seem quicker. Brisket: The black bark is juicy and peppery, some of the best around. The thick smoke ring has a deep red hue. The brisket meat glistens from the retained juices and grease. The meat is tender and has great smoky and beefy flavors. Parking: Drive past the long line and find parking by the neighborhood homes. Ordering: Your group must wait outside until you are waved in to enter the doorway. You are given a sample of a juicy piece of brisket. You order all your sides and meat at this portion of the counter. At the other end, you order your beverages and then pay. Dining Area: There's a good sized outdoor patio that wraps around the building. read more

La BBQ was suggested by a local. We only had limited time to choose 1 good BBQ joint with a long line when I visited Austin and La BBQ didn't disappoint. It beats anything Ive ever had in Nor Cal and possibly all of CA by good margin. You can tell by the passion and service by this establishment that they are really adamant about their craft. read more

There's always a line - usually at least 30 minutes. I've been there before opening and been the 30th person in line. It's worth the wait though!
Do they still offer free beer for those waiting in line?
Not since they moved to the brick and mortar location. There is beer for purchase from the Quickie Pickie and it's just as delicious as the Q

I've done it before around the holidays. But they're usually sold out by then. Just call ahead.
If I pre-order my food can I get meat by the half or fourth pound or do I have to order it in full pound increments? When I looked at the pre orders online it seemed I could only do full pound amounts
I'm fairly certain they only allow pre-ordering by the pound. But if you pre-order, they do let you eat it there as opposed to some other BBQ places in the area that you require you to take it out.
How's the lunch crowd on a Friday?
I was there on a Tuesday and the wait was more than an hour. It would not be less on a Friday. If you order online 3 days in advance, you can skip the line and pick up your order at the window on the side patio. That's what I would do in the future.… Read more
