I love the peanuts they sell! Ask for them at the cash. I always pick up a couple of tubs with my chicken. Salty with a good dash of Chile peppers thrown in to spice them up. They are so darn good that they never last long. Good thing I don't live any closer!

La Bodega Market - Long Beach, CA

I learned about this hidden gem known as "La Bodega" by accident, but I'm so glad I did! Although quite a drive from our area of Orange County (OC) to Long Beach, the photos of "La Bodega's" Pollo Asado (aka chargrilled chicken) on Yelp looked so good, we had make the trip! As we made the drive from OC to Long Beach, we started to wonder if we were in the right place. But we finally saw it: that glorious smoke traveling across Anaheim Street. With smoke billowing from this very humble little neighborhood market, "La Bodega" grills whole chickens in their parking lot over an open mesquite charcoal flame, with a distinctively delicious smoky aroma that you can literally smell down the street. Parking can be a challenge at times, but do not let that discourage you. Just quietly park on one of the neighborhood streets, & make the walk. Totally worth it! The market itself, is small & a bit "tight," but it features fresh meats, fruits, dairy, many Latin specialties, & an ice cream shop. Order & pay for your chicken inside at the front counter, grab your receipt, & head outside for that tasty, smoky, goodness. Give the "grill-master" your receipt, & he will literally let you pick your own chicken(s) to-go! Oh! And this chicken is nothing short of amazing...fresh, juicy, & with a smoky mesquite charcoal flavor. One bite & we said, "El Pollo WHO???" Yes...it was THAT amazing. Only downside: They do not have ready-made side-orders. So we simply make our own fresh salsa, tortillas, beans, rice, & plantains at home, to accompany that yummy chargrilled chicken. So delicious! Being the epitome of "don't judge a book by its cover," "La Bodega" is nothing fancy, but overall, this spot is definitely worth the trip for some good, authentic Pollo Asado. Tip: If you are coming only for the chicken, keep in mind: Chargrilled chicken is only available on weekends.

There's been pizza, bagels, made to order meals as well as seafood vendors. There's quite a good amount on food. With the stage being there, they alway had a live band performing and keeping people entertained. Dancing happens which is a nice way to get people to enjoy themselves. It's a pretty cool market but parking is limited as it's alway pretty busy at the park.

Don't be surprised when coming here that the parking lot is diabolical on the weekends - good luck trying to find a spot ! I came here once on a weekend & I would not advise - even street parking is scarce. Your best bet is to come on a weekday & you'll most likely find a spot in the teeny lot on Gardenia. THe store only has 2 registers & it's a zoo on the weekends. If you have craving for Khmer food, come here... chances are they have it. Beef skewers, pickled veggies, nom kom, to name a few. If you're looking for fish sauce or oyster sauce that's specifically made in Cambodia, they have it which I haven't seen at any other Khmer market or asian market. For how little the store is, there's a lot jammed inside. I was happy to find kreung here as I am too lazy to make my own ! and another rare find, Monk Balm (think tiger balm), & other medicinal items. You know the place is legit when you try asking a worker a question & they know NO english. If you're unfamiliar best to bring a Khmer speaker with to help assist in any questions.

You can find authentic Cambodian prepared foods, meats, noodles, fresh cut up mangoes or pineapples, and so much more. I've been craving their beef sticks and these are the best in my opinion. Something about the marinated ingredients they put in makes my mouth salivating. I bought 6 beef sticks for $12 which comes with papaya salad. A bit pricey, but nice to indulge once in a while. This market is where I buy all my Asian ingredients like soy sauce, hoisin, garlic chili, oyster sauce, and fish sauce. Can't forget the pickled mangoes in a jar. Absolutely my favorite to snack on during a hot day. Sweet at the same time sour goodness! Wai Wai noodles is a staple in our kitchen, therefore that's always in our shopping cart. Parking can get tight when it's busy, but people come in and out so you'll eventually find a space. Service does need improvement, but never had an issue with the cashiers. I will continue to go shopping there just because it's convenient for me when I need something quick.

It happens each Sunday from 9 AM to 2 PM. This market is filled with all your essentials. Tons of fruits, veggies, cheeses, meats, baked goods, flowers, house plants, dips, and more. There was even a bagel spot with a line about 50 people deep. I am my best self at a farmers market, but often leave with an empty wallet. I snagged hummus, kombucha, green juice, and a floral arrangement in one visit. A few things that make this spot incredibly special: 1. there's a plethora of parking and it's free for the first 2-hours. 2. They literally have a dog valet where you can drop off your pet before shopping the local vendors. Quite possibly the cutest thing I've ever seen. 3. It's literally hosted at the marina with a gorgeous view of the boats and water. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon picnic with your farmers market goodies. Unfortunately, Battambong was not present this week (as the chef was on vacation for the week), but I'll be back soon for Battambong's delicious smoked brisket and Cambodian-style sausages. And mind you, perhaps you'll get a better tasting batch of strawberries maybe? The stall is in a church's parking lot, I believe, although I parked on the street and walked over. Went around an hour before closing. It's $8 for a pound of strawberries, so definitely not cheap. Especially when you can get strawberries for roughly $2.5/lb at Costco or even as low as $2/lb at other stores. I have really fond memories of buying strawberries from Thacker Berries back in middle school, and them tasting AMAZING. I don't know if I need to wait until even later in the seasons, but these were marginally "better" if not equivalent to the strawberries I buy at any other supermarket. I don't consider the 4x pricing worth it. The real killer was when I was cutting my strawberries, and the first one which was really large and promising, essentially ended up being rotted all the way through... My experience was essentially the same when I bought strawberries from another of their booths a couple of years ago. There's nothing really that stands out that makes them worth the extreme upcharge. I cannot tell if the flavor/quality has dropped or if I need to wait until the weather gets even warmer. Not sure if I plan on trying them again after two expensive misses.
