My friends and I came here during happy hour since we were interested in trying it. We ordered a few items to share: black olive tapenade, chicken brochette, escargot, and charcuterie and cheese. The black olive tapenade was delicious! The tapenade filled one side of the little bowl, and the sundried tomato was filled the other side. Highly recommend mixing both since they paired well together. Also, it comes with a nice helping of crostinis, and kept providing us with additional fresh ones. The chicken brochette was well cooked, juicy, and well seasoned! The escargot was pretty disappointing despite how delicious it looked. It simply lacked flavor, so it was completely bland. Lastly, the charcuterie board was absolutely delicious. My favorite was the ash goat cheese! The service was unsurprisingly spectacular since they were pretty attentive and welcoming. read more

We had dinner at La Bécasse on August 11 and, unfortunately, the service significantly detracted from what should have been a special evening. Our experience began poorly. When we arrived, several staff members passed by or saw us standing at the entrance without acknowledging us. We waited for what felt like more than five minutes before anyone greeted us, welcomed us, or asked for the name on our reservation. It was an uncomfortable first impression, particularly at a restaurant of this caliber. The larger problem, however, was our waiter. Throughout the evening, we found him rude and condescending rather than gracious or hospitable. At one point he stepped directly on my wife's foot and did not apologize or even acknowledge it. By the end of the meal, his manner had so affected our experience that I seriously considered leaving a cash tip with a note specifying that it was intended for the kitchen staff only. I cannot remember another dining experience in which I have felt that strongly about not tipping a server. I do want to distinguish the service from the work of the kitchen, and I don't take pleasure in leaving a negative review. But gracious, attentive service is an important part of dining at a restaurant like this, and our experience fell far short of that standard. I hope ours was an exception, because the evening could have been very different with better hospitality. read more

Were at a loose end in Leland, this place popped up as 'foodie grade'. Overall they do a good job at a French Country Cuisine with a mid western vibe. Really pleasant locaition. The food is classic french with a bit of mischief (as you would expect when the restaurant name is colloquial for 'silly goose'). The main restaurant is almost a bit formal for french country imo. But with the happy hour patio crowd outside, can't get too stuffy. The wait staff are a bunch of characters (good way). Our fellow had a long faced drawl drenched in ennui - like Jeeves had been taken over by Larry Bird. Food in the UP is no longer a variant of fried perch - game on. Came for happy hour on the patio (3-5pm on Tuesdays to Saturdays). They have good happy deals and we ordered the escargot which was phenomenal. There is no red wine on happy hour but ordered one off the menu and it was exquisite. My friend also enjoyed the French 75. The place is very cute. They have umbrellas on the patio making it comfortable in the sun. The staff is very friendly and helpful with recommendations. After appetizers of pâté and gravlax we enjoyed the two specials of branzino and pork medallions--the juiciest pork I have ever enjoyed! I had been looking forward to going to this place for a long time. My family raves about it. I love great French cuisine. If the price is high and it's exquisite, the price is not a problem. This was not that, the onion tart was bland, the salad was colorless and flavorless and the hanger steak was a solid ok. I wanted to like this place, so much. For the prices, however, a little more ambiance in the tiny dining room would be nice, and it wouldn't take that much effort. Music, to dampen the sound of conversation from the tables a foot away on either side of us? Warmer lighting, perhaps sconces, to eliminate the cafeteria feel that ceiling lights lend? Some charming French fabric in place of the plain, white rod-pocket curtains hanging against plain, white cinderblock walls? All of the above would help make cramped feel more like cozy. read more

We might have been really impressed because we enjoyed 2 Bottles of Pauillic Bordeaux - their special wine with grapes grown on gifted property, decanted in swimming pool sized bowl/glass and we thought it was worth it. This little gem of culinary delight is sitting along a country road intersection with car parking right in front of the outdoor terrace. Service was impeccable and you can tell an actual chef prepares the menu and dishes. Someone is actually cooking as opposed to grilling and deep frying with little imagination. I do wish that the setting was a little more matching the culinary craft happening here. The food was bland and expensive for what we received. The main, the duck, was $45 dollars. This included a duck breast and a duck leg, along with a little sweet potato square and steamed vegetables. The breast was overcooked (despite the waiter asking for our preferred doneness and us ordering medium rare). The sweet potato was the highlight of the dish. The steamed vegetables were a head scratcher. No seasoning -- just a scoop of steamed vegetables for $45. The amuse-bouche tasted like refrigerator. The appetizer -- an onion and cream tart of some sort -- was quite flavorless. Dessert, a coconut frangipane, was crumbly and lacked flavor. The wine list, however, was very good. read more

The charming restaurant was everything I'd hoped it would be. Seating is limited so a reservation is a good idea. My husband and I ordered the onion soup, sea scallops, duck duo and the profiteroles. The soup was well balanced with a ton of onions. The sea scallops were very tender. The duck duo was very tasty (however the duck skin was not crisp which was my only issue). If you want some real good, well made food, this is your place! The food is pricey but you are paying for very well and high quality food, so definitely worth it. Make sure you make reservations very early, it's a very intimate space and you need a reservation to make sure you get a table. It's easy to make a reservation on their website. Our waitress was fantastic! Attentive but not overbearing. We cannot rave enough about how delicious everything was. And you must make sure you save room for their chocolate cake! It is simply French. A hidden gem in Northern Michigan. The food, the service, and the cozy ambiance are phenomenal.

Top notch 5-star French cuisine and service. The food is pricy but equivalent to other establishments of the same style. It's been awhile since we've been there, but at that time there were two seatings per evening. Passing by, you'd not get the impression that this was such a quality establishment, especially in such a location, far from a large town. But don't let the looks or setting deceive you. On our last visit, we were celebrating our wedding anniversary, so we were more liberal with our cash. We ordered one of the last few bottles from the now-closed LaBecasse winery in France. I've never paid $75 for a bottle of wine, but it was well worth it, believe me. It's also a place, where in the off-season, guests often get to know those at another table. We met a charming couple who were dining with his son and daughter-in-law. Wonderful local people who were multi-generation farmers from the adjoining township. Good food, good friends, good wait staff, good place for fine dining. read more

In the middle of fields and winding roads, you'll find the most darling french restaurant. It is quiet and intimate with great food. The staff is fairly attentive, and the food is on point. The drink selection is full of variety and I highly recommend the bellini manhattan. Although they did not have ice wine (we just discovered this gem of a dessert drink and hoped to find some this far north), they do have a similar wine with a great story. Ask for wine that is harvested just after the first frost or something similar to that. read more

The lobster risotto appetizer was delicious with lots of flavor and chunks of lobster. You may not wish to share, so order two! I normally don't get excited about any salad, but their beet and cherry salad was superb! It had such a mix of flavors that just jumped off of the plate. Hubby fell in love with their parsnip soup, with shitake mushroom powder. My hubby enjoyed his duck magret entree, prepared rare; he loved this dish! I would have asked for medium, which is how they normally serve it. This is one of their signature dishes and it was perfectly seared and seasoned with a vanilla demi-glace. Absolutely loved that this was served with a nice sweet potato gratin, so glad that we didn't see a plain boring potato next to such a nice piece of duck meat! Whitefish is a typical dish served in this area and I was quite surprised to see a whitefish dinner that was prepared in a way that was so different than most other restaurants. It took my palate a bit of time to get used to all of the flavors in the dish, but by the end of my meal, I came to love all of it. The flavors of tomatoes, olive tapenade and goat cheese were wonderful and they didn't overpower the flavor of the whitefish. A nice job. For dessert, we were treated to homemade chocolate truffles infused with homemade cherry vodka. P e r f e c t i o n. It was so great to see a selection of local wines on their menu. We recommend that you try Verterra's Pinot Blanc. And they serve Higher Grounds coffee (local and fair-trade) another mark of a quality restaurant is their coffee offering, right? I'm sure that this place is crazy busy during the summer months, so make the effort to trek out here during the winter. What a great date night! We loved our server, Rosie, who was so smiley and prompt. The food was all beautiful, and the people dining around us were all happy as well. We joked that the woman at the table next to us, who ordered the 18-oz veal chop should get a t-shirt for even coming close to finishing it. Our bourbon and wine were wonderful. We started with the escargot, which arrived in a typical terrine made for escargot, but was already shelled and herbed. We also had the duck pate', which was not the mousse we expected, but a chopped-up "country style" pate'. It was a bit offputting to have chunky meat in my pate', but it was like very expensive souse to look at. I had the duo of duck- the thigh was overcooked and smelled almost freezerburned or microwaved, but the breast was lovely and medium rare. My husband had the risotto with scallops and enjoyed it very much. Our last course was a shared parfait of ice cream, lemon curd, and blueberry.
