Customer Service: Issue #1 - Service is slow. After sitting down took 15-20 mins before the waiter acknowledged us. In fact we had to reach out to the waiter. Then another 30 - 45 minutes to receive order..Start to finish was approximately 2 hrs wasted here. Issue #2 - All appetizers did not arrive at the same time. When we told waiter to cancel the appetizer because it wasn't brought out with the rest he said they can't cancel orders & that's it's already waiting to be brought out. Food Quality: All the food was brought out and majority of food was already cold. The food was not good. No flavor. Very bland. Entertainment: Dining outside there is a water show approximately every 15. But there are also raccoons. Kids Menu: No kids menu. Did not see any kid friendly options. No cheeseburgers on the menu and they are not willing to coordinate with the other restaurants on site to place an order for one. La Cantina has a great outdoor dining experience, colorful chairs with great views of the lake which at night offers a fun light show. I've never dined inside but from walking though it offers more of a sports bar type vibe. I ordered the ribs and the meat fell off the bone and the cheesy potato was yummy! The rest of the table enjoyed flautas, enchiladas, posole, and tostados. Cocktails looked and tasted good. Service was great and we were able to watch the 15-20 minute light show. read more

Tortillas tasted like cardboard.. quality of food has dramatically gone down and extremely over priced for what it is. The restaurant's most impressive feature is the outdoor seating area near a laser light water show that happens frequently at night. The food is very good especially my octopus dish with jicama salad. It was very tender and full of flavor. My wife had the catch of the day which was a little small but good. A Mexican Sports Bar with good noshes and drinks and superb service! There are a few dishes that could be better, like the Guacamole. It was similar to Taco Break, like they all get it from the same batch, boring, bland, needs flavor help and too creamy. We got plain this time, no Grasshoppers since we ditched the kids, who love them added. The dry chips were the same dry and no flavor but the Gardiniera and Sauces were great and needed. Verdes and Picantes, including a white sauce, ranged from mild to spicy. Something for everyone. Otherwise, the Rib Eye Chicharron with Grilled Queso Panela and Onions were delish! The Chicken Quesadillas was seasoned and juicy and great against the Asadero queso. Even better with the Spicy Salsa and a top of Guac. Tried Pulque and know it's not for me but glad we did. Drinks like a cloudy, milky Sake. Also, had Pineapple Margaritas (neat) sin sal con Patron Silver. Good and refreshing. Came to stay at the Grand Mayan resort in Nuevo Vallarta and this was one of the few restaurants that were nearby on the resort. We came here once for the "light show" but I believe they were having technical difficulties because they started very late and it ended up being a 20 second ad for their restaurant. A couple nights later we went to actually try the food and caught a glimpse of the show and it looked much better with different content. Now the service was good. They attended to all our needs. I just wish they had physical menus instead of the code because our phones weren't downloading it and we had to share the restaurants iPad between 8 of us. The food was really good. We found this place for a late lunch after the Vidanta sales presentation ran longer than expected. Prices are higher than Taco Break (which we had for dinner the previous night) but better presentation and ambience was more comfortable. Almost empty place for a Monday at 2pm. Plenty sports screens around the room. Service was alright, although slightly snooty and food came out slower than expected. Hubby liked the chicken fajitas. I tried the gorditos, which were tasty though oily. Kid enjoyed the chicken quesadilla which was double the portion of Taco Break and came with a small cup of pico de gallo and guacamole. read more

Went to La Cantina for my birthday dinner. Server was kind and attentive. Accommodates large parties which is great. Food I ordered was really good! Especially the appetizer. We sat inside where the Air conditioner was lol but they have tables outside by the water. There's a water show in the evenings. Decor is nice inside. The only thing I would warn about is the steak. The sad thing about this restaurant is that I cannot really comment so much on the food as on the terrible attitude of the waiter and manager with whom we had to deal. We loved the decor and expected a great evening, but something was not working well with the staff. It took forever to get someone to take our order, and then a lot more time to actually get food - but not all the food! There were six of us at the table, but someone apparently decided that only four of us should get fed, because only four dinners arrived. Those of us who had food had no choice but to get started, while the rest just waited. Finally, our host went to talk with the manager who was rude and unhelpful. It really ruined the evening, and thanks to our concierge and the management at the Grand Luxxe, we eventually were reimbursed for the cost of our meals there. This location is by the water and has a show from 8:40 and plays every 30 minutes. Great show but we saw 3 shows before our food arrived. You can come to watch the show without having to eat here. I would recommend it. The drinks are okay the food though quite a bit of a selection is subpar. I come from California where we tend to have quite an assortment of Mexican flavors and we'll my fajitas a Chilis much better than here which is a disappointment. The cochinita pibil was also just okay. I guess you can't compare that to the taste you get in the Yucatán peninsula however had better in other parts of Mexico, another disappointment. The Pozole rojo is a dish that you shouldn't be able to go wrong with since you add all the condiments to get it to that exquisite taste, that too was a bit bland. Additionally, I have a 9 year old that tends to be a picky eater and this place doesn't offer a kids menu which forced to me to get the fajitas or ribeye if I wanted her to eat anything. If you do not live in an area with authentic Mexican food or frequent Mexican cuisine this could be a place you may enjoy. But please try some restaurants outside of the hotel your taste buds will thank you. The ambiance is very nice as well but again not worth the service or food. read more

We visited La Cantina for lunch when arriving to the property. This is our second time coming to Puerto Vallarta and second time staying at the beautiful Vidanta properties. We were tired and hungry from our trip, so we gave them a try. I think when you are both tired and hungry it can effect how you perceive you food and service. We had a few items: Lobster tacos, el pastor tacos and quesadillas. The tacos were well prepared. The only downside I can say about the restaurant was the level of service. Many moments we were left with empty glasses of water and when we needed the check it was difficult to flag someone down. In the end the food was good, on the pricey side for a few tacos, but we're on property, so that is expected. The service was less than expected and that is where they need to improve. I come form a service industry and the basics were not there. This isn't just from me, but the entire family felt this way. Improve the service and the rest will be history. read more

It's really the perfect place for lunch or a casual dinner. We ate outside for a better view of the lake, but the inside looked great as well. We started with the traditional ceviche which packed a punch. It was fresh and flavorful. I'd never had ceviche before, and it was a great introduction to the dish! We were on vacation with a couple of friends, and one of them is a ceviche enthusiast. She said this was one of the best she'd ever had! We also ordered the full roasted cauliflower which has never disappointed me anywhere I've ordered it- this was no exception. It was delicious. I ordered the veggie fajitas which were perfection! Great flavor and mix of peppers, onions, zucchini, mushrooms, and carrots. I feel like many other places go too hard on the mushrooms and there's no balance. La Cantina did a great job. Alyssa ordered the shrimp tacos which we then talked about almost daily for the rest of our trip! The chipotle sauce and coleslaw salad really took the tacos to the next level. Drinks were delicious, service was on point. We came here on our very first night at Vidanta, and it made a lasting impression. Our group kept planning on going back, but unfortunately so many of the events and excursions we'd planned came with food. There just weren't enough mealtimes in the 7 day stretch. Authentic Mexican? Nope. Good food? Indeed. La Cantina is comfort food. From the tortilla chips they bring to the table to start the meal to the cheese heavy dishes, everything sings comfort. The ceviche is the best I had during our stay - simple, yet incredibly flavorful. The drinks were all super fresh and the margarita - classic, of course - was also one of the best we had during our stay in Puerta Vallarta. They have a nice assortment of non-alcoholic drinks as well. Fruity and fun, and a good break for the kids from the constant Shirley Temples. Speaking of the little ones . . . There's no kids menu - but if you ask the servers, they can get a kid friendly meal prepared pretty easily. It's not authentic Mexican and more like Americanized??? It was more like sports bar with American food. I ordered the octopus which was super oily and needed more salt, lemon and parsley. My friend ordered fish and other gf ordered Taco pizza. They were just mediocre. The service here was awful as well. The only restaurant in the resort with really bad and super slow service. The sports bar atmosphere isn't my favorite, but the food was pretty good and the staff were nice! I'd skip the orange juice, but I would skip that in general at Vidanta. It was bland and watery and multiple places we went. If you want a Mexican style breakfast, this is probably the best and possibly only place to get it at Vidanta. The best thing about this place is the bean appetizer with jerky and tortillas. The chili relleno was terrible. The pork was tough. Service was so confusing. There must have been 5 people taking care of us and none of us could get a salt shaker. The nachos tooled great. But jar cheese on them. Unfortunately this place was not for me. I do have to say that I like the Beautiful decor and atmosphere. The view when eating outside looked tranquil and relax but from the start my experience was not pleasant. We made reservations to go to La Cantina mainly because we wanted to see the light water show. We got there half an hour early but when we arrived we were told that the water show was canceled for the night due to a broken part. My family and I started discussing our plans to either go somewhere else, cancel the reservations or wait or what to do next. So we decided to stay but walk around and take a few pictures in the mean time. By the time we got back for our reservations the hostess had given our table to someone else. She assumed we had canceled since she heard us talked. So we decided let's make the best of it and waited for another table to be ready no big deal. Overall I was disappointed with the service and the food. At one point the restaurant didn't have enough menus to go around and once we got the food I wasn't impress with the food specially for those prices. One of my favorites restaurants at the resort. Their inside bar has a big range on it's vibe, from tranquil and quiet to loud and lively. We stopped in for a drink 4x during our week stay here and every time it was a different vibe. The restaurant outside it great for dinner. Water show happens every 30 min and it is different every time. Food and service was great. Everything tasted fresh. Live music outside, mariachis, singers, violin players, all going to various tables to preform. Service is not quick so be prepared to have a few drinks, relax, and enjoy the scenery until your food arrives. read more

With help from projectors, a water mist screen, and fountains, they take you on a vivid journey through jungles, water, and Mexican culture. They also have a sports bar for ages 18 and up (I believe it's 18) where you can watch games. The service is pretty good, but I did hear some complaints about a reservation mishap. read more

I would give this place zero stars if I could. I was there tonight and got the worse service I have ever received in my entire life. They would not give us our table - instead, our party of nine were relegated to what was essentially patio furniture (not appropriate for 5 young children in our party). Servers ignored us until my husband flagged down a supervisor who finally took our order. Our food never came. AN HOUR AND A HALF of waiting with 4 toddlers and 1 baby and our food did not come and the servers were completely indifferent. We left and will never be back. The water/light show that comes on frequently was not worth it. The fountains at the Bellagio in Las Vegas were much better. The Vidanta resort as a whole has been disappointing in terms of service. We started with a shrimp appetizer that we shared. It okay but I wish had ordered some guacamole in addition or even instead. The shrimp were large and had good flavor but in the end just a large shrimp. I had some tacos for my main course and they were just okay and very expensive for tacos. Service was ridiculously slow. "This place is the best place to eat at on the entire resort."- a man that sat at a table next to me. APPETIZER: My favorite appetizer is the garlic shrimp. The next best would have to be the shrimp with guac. The garlic shrimp is more filling while the one with guac is very refreshing. They give you a good amount of shrimp for the price you pay. MAIN: For the main course, I recommend the catch of the day or the fajita. Honestly, DO NOT get the octopus unless you like your octopus super soft. They also have other typical dishes like tacos and quesadillas, but if you are into those then you should honestly just go to the taco shop on the 3rd floor of la plaza. Those tacos are cheap and delicious. DESSERT: The flan here is really good. And they add a cute little Mexican flare with the Mexican flag colors. Overall, this place is my favorite. They also provide free salsa and chips. If you come at around 8-9pm you can see the light show at night (but do not have Disneyworld light show expectations). The waiters and waitresses dress up in a really aesthetic Mexican-like clothing. The ambience is really nice. Tips: PUT ON BUG SPRAY. The trees here attract mosquitoes. We had tried this place on arrival, I had the shrimp fajitas and mango margarita... That was very tasty! Today, five days later, we tried again... I had the EL 8 MANOS... Grill octopus with side dish of green tomatoes. I'd asked the waiter if portions were good for meal size, he said yes... Me thinking what's in a name right, maybe there are 8 tentacles, hence 8 MANOS?!? Well I also ordered a small side of Mexican rice, glad I did! What came out was a size of a small chicken breast essentially, it was only 4 MANOS :-). I should have asked specifically... Although "small" with the side of rice bowl, it was actually enough, wasn't super filling, just right! It was SO TASTY, that I wished I had a lil bit more octopus though. We were 11 including 3 children. We all ordered and happily they brought out the children's food pretty quickly but we waited a considerable amount of time for the adult food. I ordered an appetizer ... fish Ceviche, and the fish of the day with rice as my entree. When they brought out the food, it was everything all at the same time. I was not happy. While waiting, I filled myself up with the chips and sauces which were on the table to start. What could I say, no restraint. So here we are again disappointed. The only thing about this restaurant that makes it so desirable, is the price range. The nine people at our table had a bill which totaled only $142 American. That is very inexpensive.
