Just an honest review of our experience at La Casona. We dined in for lunch and unfortunately the experience wasn't what many other reviews promised. Yes, it took absolutely forever like many said but the quality of the food just isn't there either. The chips are made in house, very thick and cooked uneven so a lot of chew factor going on. Wish I would have known that before I ordered the nachos, they were hard to eat! The carnitas on the nachos were good and the cheese was melted perfectly. Way too many beans though, the properly cooked chips got soggy way too soon. Hubbies chicken was so dry it was inedible but he enjoyed the chorizo and steak. Not sure why everything takes so long, food trucks do it all the time and I've never waited 45 minutes for food! We were just passing through and it filled us up but we wouldn't return if in the area. read more

If I could give a zero I would. The MOST unprofessional establishment ever. Wait, scratch that, establishment would be too nice of a word. Any good taqueria worth their salt, should be able to handle this in 15 to 20 minutes tops. I called to order 5 items, and they said 45 minutes. That's absurd, but when in Rome I'll adapt. Thing is, I get there right at the 45 minute mark and then I wait and wait, and wait a little more until it's over and HOUR AND A HALF! I mean not even a sorry, nothing. If I ran my business like that I would have long ago lost it. Do what you say, and say what you mean. It's really as simple as that. If you can't manage that, then close up shop. What's interesting is people were coming in to sit down way after I called in my order and they served them first. Is this some out of towner thing; if so then grow up. This is the antithesis of what REAL service is. Here's the kicker, after all that waiting and then driving home to a house full of hungry people, just to find out they left out one of the kids orders, which is the main reason why I even ordered food. Then I call and they act like I didn't order that. Having the guts to argue with me! If this were in a city they wouldn't last a week, and rightfully so. Utterly pathetic, I'm absolutely stunned at the inefficiency of all this. So if you're from out of town and coming through, do yourself a favor and avoid this like the plague. Very fresh and satisfying. The menu has many creatively prepared traditional Mexican items. We had the wet Veggie burrito and two tacos. I loved the sauce and salsa. Poor service. There was only ONE table with people. A man at that table told us to sit anywhere. Not busy at all. This place is one of the few din-ins open right now so we were patient. This place has amazing food! Big servings and good quality taste :) Chips are made from scratch. Had one of the burritos. Most people are giving bad reviews for the "slow" service but it's in a small town that isn't in a rush for anything. They start making the food from scratch once you order which is a good sign. This place is an absolute joke! I grew up in San Diego where Mexican food is just that. I'm a local willing to spend any dollar amount for good food/service. This place is laughable. A Mexican restaurant that doesn't have hot salsa? They make you wait for an hour for your food when there's nobody in there, they take their phone off the hook during business hours cause they can't keep up with the pace even though the place has been empty due to COVID. Then the woman who takes the orders acts as if it's your fault when you get frustrated for waiting for an hour. I'm really shocked that there aren't any reviews for this place, considering how many Lost Coast backpackers/campers/hikers pass through Laytonville. That said... my boyfriend, another friend, and I went to this quaint little place as a quick stop on the way back to the Bay Area. We had just backpacked 25 miles on the Lost Coast for the weekend and we were HUNGRY. The kitchen was about to close, but our waitress took one look at us (I saw the sympathy in her eyes) and said, "You guys are really, really, really hungry, aren't you?" Not only was the kitchen kept open for us, but she struck up a conversation, asked us where we were from, what we were doing up in Humboldt, et cetera. When she found out we were driving back to Marin that night (it was 9 pm at this point), she kindly brewed us a huge pot of coffee and didn't charge us for it, at all. She answered all of our questions and made sure Todd's dish was extra spicy, as requested. And maybe it was just the hike, but I seriously don't remember eating a better batch of complimentary tortilla chips and salsa. Ever. This restaurant is seriously AMAZING. It's harder than most think to find authentic cooking with fresh ingredients. If you have a developed pallet for truly great Mexican food, this is where you need to visit. I've eaten here multiple times and I've never had a bad experience. I'm just starting to be active on Yelp. :) Food: I have serious trouble finding Chile Rellenos that are this delicious. There is almost no comparison. I've traveled through Mexico and still find only a few places better than this. The flavor is just amazing. I've also had the tacos, Diablo Shrimp, flautas, pozole, and the fajitas. If you like brilliant spicy sauce, the Diablo Shrimp (name is in spanish at the restaurant) is a NEED to get! Seriously. Service: Staff is nice and attentive. I never had a problem with getting more water or chips. The Chefs in the back are also incredible! They truly add to the enjoyment of the restaurant experience. Parking: No problem! Small lot but there always seems to be available parking. No cost. :) Atmosphere: I'll call it Mexican minimalism. You get a very strong essence of Mexican culture without it being bombarded in your face, which is nice. I think it's enjoyable. Another plus is the outdoor seating on beautiful days or evenings. This has become one of my regular stops when I'm in the area. The food is excellent, fresh, good portions. The tortilla chips are plentiful and home-made, which is always a plus in my book. A half-dozen beers are on tap. My daughter and I enjoyed the tasty fresh food and the service in a beautiful patio facing the mountain scenery . I had the chicken shredded tostada and my daughter the carne asada super burrito. Both of them were awesome! I don't know why people have said it takes too long. We had our fresh , just made food ( not greasy ,fast food ) in a decent amount of time . I was leery of some of the reviews but we didn't have many choices driving through the redwoods. We were thankful they decided to stay open for us (although they locked their doors). Unreal how amazing this food is. If you're in a rush, don't bother. This place is an experience: to slow down and talk while every order is being made from scratch, to enjoy the present moment. I got the chicken tacos and they may have been the best I've ever had. Corn tortillas not too greasy, not to soft. The green sauce was amazing. I was so shocked at how amazing they were I gave a chicken sample to everyone person at the table, haha. Salsa had a kick to it which was great too. Sabrina was funny, honest and sweet and we loved her as our server. We had about a 45 minute wait after we put in our order which we didn't think was that bad considering there were 6 other parties there and only 3 people total running the place. This place is a double edged sword, the food is outstanding, but the service is ridiculously slow. You can see the kitchen from the dinning room and you can see that the food is made from all fresh ingredients and the taste reflects that. The portions are good and you're not going to leave hungry. Unfortunately, receiving your meal is another issue. Most recently I came in by myself and ordered a taco salad. There was one table of three ahead of me. It took 45 minutes to receive my salad. Plus, I had to ask to have my water refilled. I've eaten here many times (because the food is so good) and when the place is even half full, expect 1 to 1 1/2 hours for your meal. If you're a large group, the first person to receive their meal, may be done by the time time the last member of the group gets theirs. What I have noticed, is that togo orders seem to get preference. You'll see one after another go out while you're waiting. I've tried it, I'll call in a order and am told it'll be ready in 20 minutes (yeah right I think). But sure enough when I get there it's ready. So that is how I usually order. Unless I have nothing better to do, I'll go in and embrace the wait. Five stars for the food, zero stars for the service. read more
