They WILL find a way to rip you off. As a rule, if I order standing up, and carry my own food to my table or take it out, I don't tip. Today, I ordered to go. The cashier (maybe a waiter) told me the total was $31.69. Not realizing at the time that I was being overcharged, I gave him two twenties and two twos. A young woman who suddenly showed up gave me a five and five ones. I stood there, waiting for the rest of my change. The cashier asked me if I wanted the rest of my change and I nodded. He handed me a quarter. I said that that was not the right amount. The young woman said that they didn't have coins there, that they operate on a "different system". I thought it was a mistake and explained that the US is getting rid of pennies but not nickels, dimes and quarters. She repeated that they didn't have coins there and that they operated on a "different system". She pulled a quarter out of her pocket, saying that was all the coins they had in the entire restaurant. She asked me if I was okay now, as if them rounding people's bills up without their permission (I doubt they round them down), which is illegal, shouldn't matter to me as long as I got my change. At home I started thinking about the item prices and wondering how the tax could have been so much. I then realized that I'd been overcharged by an exact number of dollars. I called the restaurant. Someone named Valentina answered and, when I explained who I was and that I'd just been there and been overcharged, she hung up on me. When I called back, it went straight to vm, so I think she blocked me. I see that several people have mentioned in their reviews that they've had surprise tip charges added to their bills, that they've been ridiculously overcharged for drinks that are vaguely described in the menu, that they've received watered-down drinks and that item charges on their bills don't match what the menu shows. Went to this very festively decorated place for late breakfast and part of the June Agave Challenge for CO. Colorful paintings of Frida and sugar skull women adorn the walls with La Catrina statues greeting you as you enter. Menu items are varied, and the breakfast menu is small but has the usual favorites. I went for the breakfast burrito with bacon smothered in green chile with cheese. Highly recommend getting the smothered because the green chile had a good kick and flavor. Service was friendly, although a bit slow since the one employee had multiple roles to play (host, waiter, and bartender). I liked the bubble glassware rimmed in gold. The drinks for the Agave Challenge were carefully made but too sweet for my taste. I will return to try other menu items and beverages. read more

I was in town for work and was craving some Mexican food. As a native Arizonan, I'm a bit spoiled with a lot of delicious, authentic Mexican food places nearby, but when I saw the reviews on La Catrina I knew I had to try it! Immediately upon entering, the aesthetic is gorgeous!! The place is beautiful, catrinas everywhere, flowers, bright paintings, good music, the whole 9 yards! We got sat and ordered the trio sampler, the queso was pretty good and the frijoles with cheese had no complaints, but the guacamole was some of the best I've had in a long time! For entrees, I had the Catrina tacos: steak, cheese, avocado, and shrimp with a fantastic salsa verde. The meat was tender, the sauce had a kick, the avocado perfectly buttery and the shrimp was cooked perfectly. My hubby got the molcajete and it did not disappoint! The sauce was phenomenal, the shrimp, the chorizo, the chiles, all of it was amazing! I wish we would have had room to try the platanitos because fried plantains are one of my favorites and who doesn't love a cheesecake dipping sauce, but sadly our eyes were bigger than our stomachs and we were stuffed! Our server was really nice, the food came out quickly, and even though we went in only an hour before they closed, we never felt rushed. The decor is beautiful -- warm and inviting and gives a cozy atmosphere! The food was also just as amazing. I ordered the burrito and my mom ordered the shrimp fajita supreme, and both were absolutely delicious!! We also ordered burria tacos and shrimp tacos to share! Walking in the aesthetic of the restaurant was awesome and inviting. We were a party of 10 and the service was subpar for us being the only people in the restaurant. Although waiters were nice everything was slow - not completely their fault as only 2 servers were available for the entire restaurant. The drink menu didn't have any margaritas and so I went off the cuff and ordered a skinny margarita, they didn't know what that was. When it came out it tasted like a lemon drop with tequila. Not bad but not what I wanted. The Michelada Especial was liked by those who ordered it. Queso seemed like it was from a can. The main dishes were all good and liked amongst all. We were there celebrating a birthday and the staff did an amazing job making that fun by blasting music on the big screen and bringing a complimentary cake boat. My husband suggested this place for our weekly 'try a new restaurant spot' and so we stopped in last Saturday for lunch. We walked in and immediately I was taken back by the beautiful decor. The place was really beautiful. We were greeted by a young man named Jose and he sat us in a booth. I noticed there was only 1 other couple in the place, otherwise it was dead. I was surprised for a Saturday afternoon. We looked over the menu and decided to go with their lunch special, I will say this is a really good deal and when the plates came out they were huge and had large portions. For only $12, this is totally worth it. My husband got the tamale and chile relleno. I got the ground beef taco and I asked for a chicken enchilada, but they gave me a beef enchilada. I actually didn't like the enchilada sauce so the meat itself really didn't matter. The taco was loaded. I mean loaded. You couldn't have put more meat in that thing. It was delicious too. I would definitely get that again. We ordered a margarita each that were tasty. And were given chips and salsa. The service was good. Jose was checking on us to make sure we didn't need anything. I noticed some other tables started to fill up and they turned on Mexican music videos on their TVs. The music was a bit loud, but I personally didn't mind it. We went to pay the bill and it was pricey. $70 for two $12 lunch specials and 2 margaritas was kind of high. I thought to myself, well next time we just won't get the margaritas. I wrote my tip and signed and we said bye to Jose and left. I noticed in the car on the receipt that a tip was already included. Jose never mentioned it and just let me leave ANOTHER 20% tip on top of the already tipped amount. Wow... just wow. This place is gorgeous on the inside. They have 2 large wall screens with awesome music videos, beautiful flowers all over, sugar skulls, Frida Kahlo painted on the walls. Just beautiful!!! The vibe was perfect. Our server Juan Manuel was so nice, friendly and on top of everything. The food came out hot and fresh & wasn't too long of a wait. The salsa was PERFECT! We were so excited to try out this neighborhood Mexican restaurant - especially after seeing it highlighted in Denver Food Scene instagram. Positives - environment and staff. Both were wonderful. Don't let the decor fool you. The food at this restaurant was some of the worst Mexican food I've ever had. Everything was bland with no seasoning and barely even warm. None of it seemed like it was freshly cooked. The service was terrible, it took forever to get anything that we ordered. They never cleaned any of the tables. The only time they did was when someone came in, they went and cleaned the table that was least messy and sat them there. We were there for almost 2 hours and they had multiple tables that they didn't clean the whole time we were there. The bathrooms were disgusting and smelled like a portapotty. I stopped by for a quick cocktail at La Catrina. The place is really cute with bunch of La Catrina and Mexican decor all over which made our visit enjoyable. What a marvelous theme inside this restaurant!!! Our server was very friendly and explained to us all the refreshing and tasty drinks they have. She also recommended some dishes they have. We ordered the chicken soup , chilaquiles verde (green) served with rice, beans and chilaquiles rojos (red) served also with rice and beans. The chicken soup was bland, greasy, and smelled weird. Although the restaurant has been beautifully designed and decorated, probably to attract customers, the establishment was pretty dead. Unfortunately we came at a time when some rowdy students were there. They were very obnoxious and vulgar, so the staff turned up the music to try and drown them out. It helped a little, but ultimately made the experience worse. Our waitress was so sweet and I felt bad that she had to deal with the whole situation. The menu is simple and doesn't have a lot to offer, but does have a lot of Mexican staples. I had the tamales platter, which was okay. The dough/corn was good, but there was hardly any filling, giving it little flavor. Everything tasted and looked fresh though, so that's a plus. Ultimately, I don't think this is a spot I'll frequent a lot as there are a ton of other Mexican options in the area. read more

Came through here today because of an Instagram Post my daughter had seen. The ambience was great, just like we saw on the Instagram clip, very cool. Unfortunately, it was a mixed bag. We ordered three plates, and two out of the three were delicious, while one was simply OK. The worst part? The service. Just downright awful. The waitresses we had were very courteous once they came to take our order, but it just wasn't enough. They took almost 20 minutes to actually get to our table after seating us. Once they did take our order, it was another 45 minutes before we actually received our order. The whole time in between there was no service on our drinks, I had to go to the bar to ask for a refill on my soda, and we just saw no one in between. We hung in there, and waited for our food- at this point, we were invested, so might as well, eh? As for the dishes: Chicken Mole- 3/5 stars. Just ok, nothing special. The beans were authentic, the rice was not great, and was cold. The chicken itself was lukewarm at best, and didn't have a lot of flavor. Molcajete- 5/5 stars- DELICIOUS! Very tasty, all the ingredients were flavorful and fresh. The plate was hot because it comes in a heated stone plate, and the sides were delivered fresh as well. Tamales- 4/5 - the tamales were delicious, but the rice was cold and just not good. Overall, this is why they got the rating I gave, if the service is the same every time, and the food isn't even hot, I probably won't return. read more

The waiter was overly eager to take our order. The chips were fresh and warm but the salsa was mot to my liking. It tasted too much like tomato paste. The menu has a good selection. When the food arrived i was taken aback by the unnatural red color of the enchilada that i ordered. Not much flavor too it. The taco that i ordered had some of the best seasoned ground beef i have had at a mexican restaurant. The rice didnt taste bad but didnt really taste like rice. My friend ordered taquitos and she said they were all right. After asking for the check, our drinks were not refilled and we were kind of given the impression we had overstayed our welcome even though there were ample amount of tables available. I write this review not to gripe, but as a public service announcement! I advise anyone interested in coming here to read all the negative reviews you can find, so at least you know what you're getting into, and can maybe avoid some of the landmines. This was hands down our worst experience at a restaurant. I don't know why we just didn't walk away the moment we walked in to the disinfectant smell and lack of other customers. Waitress seemed friendly at first, but BEWARE the "extras". For instance, when asked if I wanted beans and rice with my tacos, I said sure, figuring it was a free add-on. Nope - $7! I ordered the $12 margarita and she asked if I'd like to upgrade to a large. Again I said sure, thinking I'd get double the size or something. Nope - $40 for a fish bowl. Really, I'm one person, and your "large" is equivalent to 4 full margaritas. and you're not even going to tell me? I didn't have a buzz after drinking half of it. Couldn't finish it. Deceptive sales tactics. For one drink and entree each, and no dessert, my husband and I paid more here than we've ever paid eating out. Oh, and BEWARE that tip is already included - If it wasn't, nobody would leave any! My husband also advised me not to use the bathroom, as it was a leaky mess all over the floor. As a side note, it was ten degrees outside and their heat was not working (this was in January of this year). So it was nearly as cold INSIDE. This one is our fault - we should have walked out - I guess we were so cold from the walk across the parking lot that we didn't think straight. We kept pushing through trying to smile and not complain. But why they didn't close down for the night is a mystery to me. Afterwards, we felt like they were purposely trying to keep us in and overcharge us to help pay for their heating system. But when I read more reviews I realized that the deceptive sales tactics and overcharging are normal business practices here, regardless of their heating issues. This place is fantastic! We had great service and were given great recommendations. Tried the appetizer sampler that has queso, guacamole, and a bean dip and enjoyed the variety. We had 2 margarita flights and let me tell you the tamarind and mango are just amazing. They were all good flavors but those 2 were the standouts. We shared a molcajete and there was so much food! But it was all so good. Our biggest letdown was that as we were driving home we realized we left our box of food at the restaurant. Everything was really cool and lovely here. I really wanted to like this place, especially after seeing the great interior design, but left extremely disappointment. The restaurant was uncomfortably hot. They had no liquor available, and a handwritten sign on the door guilting one into coming into the "Tequila and Tacos" restaurant despite the lack of tequila. The menu is simple, and I hoped that meant the items offered would be perfect. The food was terrible. I ordered cheese enchiladas and received warm tortillas with a very small amount of un-melted shredded cheese inside. They were covered in room temperature enchilada sauce that I imagine came out of a store brand can. I wish I had taken a picture because they were not nearly as appetizing as the other photo Harlee S. uploaded. My wife's fajitas had as she describes "a weird funky smell and a sour taste." She was uncomfortable eating them and left the dish in almost the same condition that it arrived in. We ordered the 3 Catrina's sampler. It included one bean dip that was good, a small amount of guacamole plopped down on lettuce for what I assume was a bowl filler (making it very difficult to eat), and what I think was Tostitos salsa con queso. My daughter's al pastor tacos were a first, as I had never before seen al pastor meat come in cubes instead of being thinly sliced. I assume someone took a different cut of meat and put some adobada on it, calling it al pastor. Kind of disappointed. Saw photos of the inside and thought it would be a nice place, but you get what you pay for. I was mainly upset because it took over 2.5 hours to eat there. OVER an hour to get the food, and not once was our water refilled the whole time we were there. The quesabirria tacos were pretty decent, but I would gripe that I didn't like the tortillas, and they were served with one tiny lime wedge and little to no cilantro. The drinks were as you would find anywhere else. This place is good if you're looking maybe for a hype spot, or for photos, but the service here was the worst I've had at a restaurant in a VERY long time. This is honestly the first time I've never even left a tip. How does it take thirty minutes to even run us the check? When it wasn't even busy. I don't think I'd come back. Everything was delicious seasoned very well the horchata was amazing can definitely tell its made in house. They weren't busy so everything was out in a timely matter. The ambiance is very nice.
