Everything you've heard about La Chaparrita? It's true. Really outstanding tacos, especially the suadero and fried tripe. It will be hard to order anything besides the suadero in future but there's too much more to try. The tacos are Mexico City-style and small by Anglo standards but it just means you get to try more. Three was a good amount for me but YMMV. Speaking of trying, I haven't seen a molleja taco (sweetbreads) in ages and this one didn't disappoint. The aguas frescas are also excellent. We have loved past visits, but this one was tough. Service was super slow and took a really long time to both take our order and prepare it. We felt like the food wasn't as fresh as usual and our friends visiting for the first time were also disappointed. The lengua taco is still the tastiest and the agua Frescas are still very good. I was scrolling through Instagram when I came across a video ranking the best tacos in Chicago. One name kept coming up: La Chaparrita Taqueria. Not only was it being called one of the best taco spots in Chicago, but one of the best in the country. I had to see for myself. Luckily, I had the next day off, so I told myself, "I'm going." I woke up the next morning and the first thing I did was get ready to make the drive. I live in the suburbs, and with traffic it took me about 90 minutes to get there, so my expectations were definitely high. I walked in and, just like the video showed, it's also a grocery store. The place was clean, there were plenty of tables, and the service was quick. Since tacos are what they're known for, I kept it simple and ordered the meats I usually judge every taco spot by: asada, cecina, and al pastor. For some context, I've had some really good tacos. I've eaten them in different states, and my own family knows how to make great tacos. So I wasn't coming in easy to impress. The first taco I tried was the asada, and it immediately stood out. It was incredibly juicy. A lot of places miss the mark because the steak ends up dry. You can cover it with seasoning, but dry is still dry. That wasn't the case here. I ordered two, but after the first bite I wished I had gotten three. Next was the cecina, which is usually my favorite. It didn't disappoint either. This is exactly what cecina should taste like and then some. Last was the al pastor, and this one completely surprised me. Al pastor is usually somewhere in my top five, but here it was easily my favorite. Every bite was packed with flavor, and honestly, it's hard to put into words just how good it was. Now I understand why this place gets so much hype. It's well deserved. I'll definitely be back, and next time I'm bringing the family, especially some of my picky cousins. If this place can win them over, it'll be tough to argue there's a better taco spot around... at least until I find one that can top it. read more

I always order two because I want to eat one when I get home. It's delicious. The service is very prompt. This place was featured on the Taco Chronicles on Netflix, so unfortunately it's not the hidden gem it could be (you may have to wait in line for your food, and the seating is limited), but it is absolutely worth checking out if you're a taco fan. The al pastor is some of the best in the city, the carne asada is legitimate tender skirt steak, and the cecina is also very good (and fairly soft for what can be a very dry meat). They've got excellent licuados and horchata, great salsas (the roja was much better than I expected) and the staff is very nice (and patient!). Absolutely a must try in a city with some truly great Mexican food; just be warned that the tacos are very small (think Los Comales-sized if that helps), so if you're hungry add a couple tacos to your typical order. read more

I saw this place on Youtube, and it looked amazing so we dropped by when we were in Chicago. We got street parking nearby and headed into the market. We were seated at a table pretty quickly and the waitress took our drink order. I ordered a small Tepache. The small is actually a good size, and I feel like anything bigger would have been too much. The flavor of the Tepache was bright and delicious. I've definitely not had anything like it before, but I will order it when I see it again. We ordered 6 of the Tacos de Canasta (two of each flavor). The chorizo and potato one had a nice spiciness from the homemade chorizo. The chicharron one was good also, but my favorite was the refried beans taco. I could see how you could order 12 of these and inhale them. They are small enough to eat as an appetizer, but if you order enough they could definitely make a meal. I ordered a suadero, asada, pastor, and campechano taco. All of the tacos were very good, and my favorite was the campechano because of the differing textures of the meat. The grilled onions on the side were also really good. Probably some of my favourite tacos in Chicago. It's connected to a small grocery store in Little Village, but it's also a sit-down restaurant. Street parking can be difficult. The tacos are small for the price. This is kind of expensive compared to other taco shops, but my love for the tacos is enough to turn a blind eye most of the time! In my most recent visit, I got the tripa, suadero, cabeza, and al pastor tacos. I shared a 16 oz mango agua fresca with 2 other people. I think they do a particularly great job in getting the tripas crispy and the head meat soft. The lengua taco is unusual with the meat being one whole slice, but I don't mind. It's not a problem if the meat is tender enough.The salsas are also tasty. Surprisingly, the habanero one isn't as spicy as you think it would be. Get the side of grilled onions and jalapenos if you're eating with a few people. It makes the tacos even better. It can take a while for the food to come out since there aren't many people working, but it's usually not an unreasonable amount of time. There's plenty of competition in this area, but personally this is my go-to spot. read more

The reason that I'm subtracting a star is that they are quite pricey for the small size. I would say you need to order at least 4/5+ of these tacos to feel full. Pro tip the Chile toreados go great with the steak tacos. You can take a bite of the taco and then take a bit of the Chile, and it adds a great spicy kick to the flavor profile. They don't have flour tortillas; however, I found the corn tortillas quite tasty and that's usually not my preference. I got the mango Aqua Fresca. It's was yummy and refreshing. I've been to La Chaparrita before but never this location. I was finally able to make it and luckily they allowed dine in. We were the only ones dining in at the time, so we got all the attention. The large was about $3.25 and it was an actual large. The horchata was was very sweet and delicious. I ordered four tacos with four different meats. Lengua, Tripas, Asada, and Al pastor. All the tacos were delicious but my favorite were Asada and al pastor. The Tripas were good, but I prefer these a tad bit more crispy. The lengua was delicious as well. The lengua was very tender with lots of flavor. Skirt steak was used for the Asada. Usually carne Asada tacos are chopped up, here you get slice of skirt steak in your taco. The steak was so juicy and seasoned perfectly. The al pastor marinade was perfect. They even put pineapple in your tacos to add that extra flavor!
