The reviews on yelp don't match the restaurant at all. On google it has 4.3 and I still think they deserve more. The food was great! No tex-mex. Their $4 dollar margaritas were so good! No cheap taste and their Micheladas tasted like Mexico miches! Definitely coming back for dinner to see what's on the menu. Interspaced with magnificent trees and gardens, the neighborhood of La Condesa in Mexico City is a favorite among Mexico's privileged elite and tourists alike. I've never been, but my friends who have say that the flowers and greenery alone warrant a visit, and that's not even accounting for the beautiful art deco architecture and grandiose boulevards. As it happened, our four dinner ended up costing more than a round trip flight from Austin to Mexico City and the accompanying taxi to the La Condesa neighborhood. The price of the entrées, the cheapest of which was $40, was surpassed only by just how small the portion sizes were. My friend ordered the corn appetizer and got what must have been about a total of 50 corn kettles. On our end, my friend and I split the pork tacos and received 6 of the tiniest tortillas in existence. A coaster could have comfortably covered one of these tortillas. To La Condesa's credit, the food was incredible. The pork was beautifully done, as was the corn. Their cocktails were also delectable. I echo a lot of my fellow Yelpers though in kindly requesting larger serving sizes. I can't imagine offering 2-4 additional tortillas on a $43 dish or 30% more corn on an appetizer would break the bank, and I think it would make the patrons feel a bit better about the prices they're paying. read more

Been here twice, first time I loved it and second time was okay. First time I got some kind of brisket taco special they were running and it was amazing! Second time I got the queso, guacamole and the tuna tostada. Queso and guacamole were great but tuna was not good. Also, don't recommend the pitcher of margs, they taste a little more watered down than just ordering a single marg. The decor inside is beautiful and our service was great. My partner and I ordered 2 of the huarache de huitlacoche. First off, the portion was so small, especially for an entree. I wouldn't even quantify this as a snack. It was so expensive, we didn't want to order multiple for each of us either since the flavor was also lacking. The texture was a bit slimy, and there wasn't any one outstanding flavor, it was kind of just bland. For this price, the portion should've been much bigger, and the taste amazing. Went in for brunch on Sunday, the chilaquiles were amazing! To make it even better, margaritas were really good and inexpensive. The bartender Alana provided amazing service, so much that we went back the next day for the happy hour. Tacos were tiny but delicious. Came here starving for a late dinner on a Thursday night. It was really busy and the restaurant was lively. I loved the dim and moody ambiance inside the restaurant and they also have great patio seating. We were a little confused because 2 people were serving us the entire time separately, but they were both very nice and helpful. The menu was not very big and it was a little tough to comprehend.. Thank God for Yelp :) For drinks, I got a Mexican Coke which was great and my friend got the Horchata which we both thought was a little too thick. Amazing food! Everything we ordered was so unique and delicious. Everything came out extremely quick which was our only complaint as we ordered around 8 items and they were placed on our table all at once. Would have preferred to pace out the meal and enjoy our apps while finishing our drinks. Given this was the case it was a lack of table space and we were eating quickly to eat things while they were hot and then stacking the plates. Food was average at best with small serving sizes. Family share meal was small. The size of it was able to feed 1 individual. Everyone did like their drinks however and the mock tail tasted good. They were all really good but the mushroom was my favorite. Loved the saltiness. Drinks were ok. Michelada was had too much chunks, needs to be served in a bigger glass so the whole beer can fit inside. Not enough flavor. Honeydew drink was just ok. Margarita had an interesting salt on the rim. La Condesa was highly recommended and the first half of the dinner was great. We were in the basement room which was super cool. Note there is no signal there but they do have wifi if you have NSA (no signal anxiety) like me. We also got a history lesson on the owners, the restaurant and area from the waitress which was nice. Now comes the part where it was not so nice. Everything we ordered was tasty but it was because it was way too rich. There wasn't much subtlety, it was overwhelming with too much fat, cheese and salt. It also ended up upsetting my stomach. Our waitress was efficient but...spilt food on my cream colored pants while clearing the table. She gasped, saw the stains and just moved on. I fully recognize that she a hard job and I was not looking for anything major but an acknowledgment would have been nice. Don't see myself coming back. read more

My goodness, this place is incredible! From the really interesting mural on the wall (it's made from pieces of Mexican billboards and touched up regularly from the artist, a local from Austin), to the food, to the tequila, to the very informed and chill waiter - nothing fell short. Here are a few tips I want to share to make your experience top notch. 1.) Get the chicken tacos. You get three and they are small and perfectly Devine with homemade corn tortillas. We had them as an appetizer. It's a must do!! 2.) If you are into tequila, take a look at the epic list and discuss with your wait staff. The staff get educated regularly on different ones. I asked our guy to chose one for me - it was fully women owned and made. Omg - Devine! I sipped it over ice for dessert. Was so smooth and a perfect end to my meal. 3.) We don't like super spicy food so we opted for the chicken dish and ordered green beans as the side. You cut the chicken and use tortillas to made little tacos. We clearly missed that if it was written on the menu. There's fresh cilantro and onion which you can fold in. We also accidentally got the corn dish which we happily accepted and added to the tacos. The big differentiator here was the waiter. He properly informed us of every dish we inquired about. We avoided a few spicy land mines as a result and landed the "perfectly selected food plane"! Parking: Street parking is free on Sundays, but it can fill up quickly, so plan ahead. Lots of parking garages close to the restaurant. Table Reservation: Make sure to reserve a table ahead of time for either of the seatings. It's a popular spot, and there are only two shows (check fact this before you head out there) you don't want to miss out! Food & Drinks: Our server, Kenny, was a gem--attentive and full of great suggestions for both drinks and eats. I enjoyed the tuna tostada, although the tostada itself was a bit thick for my taste. My frozen drink was delicious, and when the first one was too smoky (Escandalo Cocktail), Kenny kindly swapped it out. That was a kind gesture that made the experience even better. Ambiance: The show was a lot of fun, and the ambiance was festive and lively. We had a great time learning how to pop our Escandalo purple fans. Our favorite was the hongos plate bc how smoky it tasted & nice touch with the chimichurri. Huitlacoche Huarache was vegan modified and taste was subtle. Sikil pak was awesome, nice stand out. Never had hummus at a Mexican restaurant. We ate that with the guacamole which was standard but great. Not a huge fan of tostadas for dipping, prefer tortillas chips. For dessert I personally had the churros as my boyfriend is the vegan. He was able to have the peach sorbet which I tasted and found lacking sweetness, flavor. We went for dinner and asked our server if we should put everything in at one time for our table of 5 and if it would be spaced out she said yes. 15 minutes later all of our dishes came at once to our table. We didn't have room for it and it made the meal go by extremely fast. We only fit in 1 drink before we were finished up. I think it just made the experience feel a little rushed and I wish we would have known and we could have ordered throughout instead of all at once. It Would have been great to have spaced out the meal so we could enjoy additional drinks and such. I was so pleasantly surprised with how good the food was. I wasn't expecting much but the space was so nice and the food was delicious. The Alma Blanca drink was so so good (habanero-infused blanco, corn, ginger liqueur, pineapple, lemon), possibly one of my favorite tequila based cocktails I've had so far. LOOOOOVED the esquites, possibly some of the best I've had, loved how smoky it was but was also perfectly balanced (not too much mayo). The hongos was one of the best oyster mushroom based dishes I've had, perfectly cooked. The way the mushrooms were cooked kind of reminded me of cafe Chelsea (crispy on the edges, tender overall), and the black beans and chimichurri that it was served with were perfect. Finally got to try La Condesa's happy hour and it was pretty solid! The happy hour is $3 tacos and half off all drinks which is a great deal considering it's a pretty nice restaurant! Keep in mind though that the happy hour deal is only in the bar and bar patio. The tacos are street style and the masa they use to make the tortillas was absolutely fantastic! I got the pollo, carnitas, and barbacoa tacos. Personally, I think I could have lived without the pollo. It was average. The carnitas was the best one by far, so flavorful! The barbacoa was a solid second. The Marg was good, a bit above average, but still really enjoyed it. The menu is overall expensive, so I think I would only come back for happy hour, but at least I know it's a reliable one! read more

Go for the classic Austin ambience even more than for the food and drinks. Since I first enjoyed La Condesa in early 2012, this Austin stand-by has always charmed me with its mural (containing actual sections of Mexico City billboard ads) and design. I miss the old days, when its upstairs special events venue, Malverde, was open as a bar/lounge. There's a reason the great director Terence Malick included this restaurant in his ode to Austin: Song to Song, filmed in 2012. In my latest visit, my server Riley was perfectly attentive and a great person to interact with. As was Jayse, the very personable GM who gave me a tour of The Flour Room, a subterranean special events dining room. The cochinita pibil contained a bit too much fat, but was delicious nevertheless. The horchata was solid. If I'd been hungrier, I would've ordered their great ceviche and probably some apps! read more

It is served with some of the best corn tortillas I have ever had. I expected a little chip n dip action but this plate resulted in a type of make your quesadilla at the table experience. I'm not mad at it. I fully enjoyed this app. We also ordered the barbacoa and sweet potato hash. I'll say there was nothing outstanding about these dishes. Nothing that made me think, "wow this is the best ever." Ultimately, the 4/5 stars is given for overall experience. Service, vibe, and taste. I came yesterday with some colleagues, and I didn't realize I had been here years ago. It's a really pretty restaurant, and the vibes are nice. I had a great time, and the food and drinks are superb. Service is also great--I loved our waitress, and she was very helpful in assisting us decide what to order. 1. Margarita La Condesa - This cocktail/margarita was so well balanced, and I love how I couldn't taste the liquor and it didn't overpower the drink. I still felt tipsy after sipping, and it was a great drink to go along with the small plates we ordered. 2. Guacamole - You can't go wrong with ordering guacamole, and theirs was just as good as any other guacamole I've had. I love that they included whole pieces of cherry tomatoes. The one thing I will note is that their tostadas are a bit too thick/hard to bite down on, but overall, this was a great appetizer. 3. Esquites - Basically elotes but not on the cob! I love corn, and this was really well done. They didn't add so much mayo to the point where it's very heavy. I thoroughly enjoyed every bite of this. 4. Tostada de atun - this is a must-get. I was pleasantly surprised by how good this was. They layer on a really generous amount of avocado, and the fish itself isn't fishy at all. It also has a really nice kick to it because they add some type of chili oil. Every bite is incredibly well balanced. 5. Sopes - I didn't try this because I'm not a fan of cauliflower, but my co-workers said you can't taste the cauliflower at all and they enjoyed it. 6. Quesadilla de short rib - This is also another must-order. I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious this was, and the short rib is so tender and soft! I love how much cheese they put into the quesadilla as well, and the salsa verde adds a great light balance to the dish. I'm not sure why La Condesa has such low reviews, but I honestly loved my experience and the food was really good. My husbands company hosted their Christmas party down in the flour house and we had a really great time! The space is very cool and private allowing us to be as loud as we wanted to be and also hear our conversations as the upstairs floors were loud and boisterous. Although the meal had to be pre ordered due to the size of the group, we were able to order individual drinks and I chose the paloma la Condesa as well as the classic margarita topped with a pineapple floater and both drinks were amazing! By the time we left, I definitely felt them. Our meal consisted of esquites, tostada de atun, huarache de huitlacoche, enmoladas, pollo en mole, cochinta pibil and shrimp. We were also provided with items off the menu as well as a delicious salad. The meal was followed by tres leches. Our dinner was great as well as the staff.
