La Cubana is a relatively new Cuban restaurant that opened near Marietta Square in January 2017. Several coworkers have mentioned this restaurant to me and I finally got around to checking it out for lunch. I made sure to bring my Cuban friend/coworker with me to get his opinion as well. The verdict: Great Cuban food with excellent service. When it comes to Cuban food in metro Atlanta, this place is a solid 4, perhaps 5, stars. It's definitely worth checking out.
La Cubana replaced The Square Bagel (https://www.yelp.com/biz/the-square-bagel-marietta). It's in an older building that's not much to look at. They've renovated the space and opened it up. At lunchtime, it was nice and bright inside thanks to all the windows that wrap around the storefront. This is opposed to local competitor Cuban Diner (https://www.yelp.com/biz/cuban-diner-marietta) which has a dim dining room, even at lunchtime. I prefer La Cubana's brighter space.
The atmosphere is casual. This isn't the most spacious restaurant - not like Papi's up in Kennesaw (https://www.yelp.com/biz/papis-cuban-grill-kennesaw-kennesaw) - but they do have enough space to accommodate a large group and there's sufficient parking. For example, they hosted a small event for the Marietta Fire Department (a group of about 15) during our visit. There's an open kitchen, small patio with umbrella-covered tables, and a 6-seat bar with TVs.
The menu is similar to Papi's in that there are daily lunch specials on weekdays. They're priced at $7.59 each. Additional specials (5) are posted on the sign outside. Aside from the specials, there's no separate lunch menu. There's a good assortment of items to choose from. They include appetizers like mariquitas (green plantain chips, $4.59) and croquetas (4 for $4.75), soups and salads including chicken soup, tacos such as "Havana-style" fish tacos (3 for $11.99), 4 different kinds of empanadas ($2.25 each), entrees like vaca frita (shredded beef), milanesa (breaded beef, chicken, or fish; $12.99), and Cuban-style palomilla steak ($12.99), and, of course, sandwiches (their Cuban is $8.59). They also have homemade flan for $5.59.
When it comes to drinks, they have a full bar featuring several different margaritas and mojitos.
Here's what I tried:
* Mofongo - traditional Puerto Rican dish with fried green plantains and pork ($5.59)
* Ropa vieja (Thursday lunch special version) - shredded beef, black beans, rice (white or yellow), and sweet plantains ($7.59)
* Medianoche sandwich - ham, roast pork, Swiss cheese, mustard, mayo, and pickles on pressed authentic Cuban sweet bread ($8.59) plus a side of French fries ($1.35)
* Agua fresca - tamarindo ($2.75)
Everything was delicious.
My friend and I thought the mofongo was outstanding. I haven't had a lot of mofongo, but I do believe this is the best I've had. I enjoyed its texture (not too hard, soft, nor greasy) and loved its garlicky, savory flavor. I recommend it.
The ropa vieja was yummy. The difference between the Thursday lunch special version and the regular version, as far as I can tell, is you get a salad with the regular version (and it costs $12.99 as opposed to $7.59). The shredded beef was juicy and flavorful and the portion size was generous. I opted for yellow rice over white (it was actually orange in color). The rice and beans were good. Two plantains came with the plate and they were warm and scrumptious.
The medianoche was terrific. The difference between a Cuban sandwich and a medianoche sandwich is the bread. Instead of Cuban white bread, the medianoche uses a softer, sweet, egg dough bread. The bread was pressed thin and the sandwich was packed with meat, mostly roast pork. The fries were A-OK. They were medium in thickness and addictively crispy.
La Cubana offers two kinds of agua frescas: tamarindo (tamarind) and jamaica (hibiscus). The menu says a small costs $2.50 and a large $3.99. When I ordered my tamarindo, the server didn't ask me what size I wanted. The drink was served in an ice cold beer mug. I've never had an agua fresca served that way and I liked it. The drink was sweet and refreshing. They ended up charging me $2.75 for it.
My friend got a cortadito (Cuban espresso) for $2.20. This coffee drink isn't listed on the menu. They freshly prepared it for him. Cuban espresso is an espresso shot sweetened with natural brown sugar and topped off with steamed milk.
The staff was welcoming and attentive and our orders came out quick.
I look forward to coming back. read more
