La Diagonal is a quaint Mexican restaurant in Harlem. The service here is great. Our servers were super friendly and gave some great suggestions. I ordered a hibiscus margarita which was delicious! Followed this up with shrimp tacos and churros which were also really great. Points off because the menu was quite small imo and I felt I didn't have many options to choose from for entrees and apps. They prices are also on the higher end, so probably not a place I'd frequent often.

This restaurant has such a cozy and charming atmosphere! The warm lighting and cute rustic decor make it an ideal place for a relaxed meal or a date night. It wasn't crowded on a Saturday night. Their staff is super nice and attentive. Our meal was yummy. We shared crab guacamole, chicken fajitas and steak tacos. It's definitely worth a repeat visit.

Small portions and above average prices! No happy hour on Friday as stated above on this page! I met up with some friends on a Friday night and we sat at a "heated" outdoor table. I liked how we had our own private little room but the quality of the heat lamp was poor so make sure you bundle up! We ordered a few different spicy margaritas $15, which ended up not being spicy at all. We were also charged an extra $2 for asking for it spicy which was odd to me. Presentation of the drinks was great; they looked classy and like the bartender took his/her time. Service was very friendly and helpful with recommendations. For food, we had the octopus, shrimp quesadilla, queso dip and enchiladas. I thought the quality of the food was great but the portions were small and prices were above average! It might be worth it to try and come during happy hour Monday-Thursday. Not sure if I'll be back only because I didn't feel the prices were worth it.

first time visiting harlem, ny and this little gem caught my eye. it's cute on the outside but the ambiance and decor when you go inside is stunning. there are two outside seating areas as well. loved sitting in the patio facing the street; as a visitor to the city i love to see everything that's happening. the service was okay, just needs a little more patience. the menu options are very limited, definitely wasn't expecting that part. happy hour isn't really much of a happy hour; $12 for two small corn tortilla tacos and no sides included --ehhh. also if you so want sides they are $7 each. drinks on hh are normal pricing for drinks. the pricing on the regular menu was up there. personal opinion this place is too expensive for the amount and quality of the food. didn't really see much that caught my eye so i got the chicken tacos and yucca fries. chicken tacos were just okay and the fries were overcooked (they were so hard) and extremely salty. the red sangria was tasty. the rest of my party tried the quesadilla, shrimp enchiladas, and more tacos. tried a little of the enchiladas it was okay but not something i would get an order of. the experience was cool but definitely don't think i would be visiting next time i'm in town.

Atmosphere: 5/5 Ceviche: 4.3/5 Tacos:3/5 So So beautiful. As soon as you walk in, you feel welcomed and feel warm. It almost feels like you're in Mexico City/ Polanco. Everyone is welcoming and friendly. The fish ceviche was pretty on point. I would have loved some additional cucumber or maybe maíz for added texture. It was seasoned just right. I was hoping for more and something else but couldn't put my finger on it. It brought me back to ceviche I had in Peru but also mourning that dish too. The meat (steak) on the tacos was cooked perfectly which just enough rareness. The tortilla could have been a little more fresh for my tasting. There wasn't a salsa provided but we didn't ask so maybe they do have them. I know they do not have chips and salsas. The tacos could have had a little more umph. (Sorry no pic)

Went to this hidden gem on a rainy Sunday night. The decor inside the restaurant was beautiful. Definitely feels upscale. I asked the waiter for some cocktails recommendations and honestly forgot what they were called but they were definitely strong and good! We ordered the chicken tacos and shrimp quesadillas with sweet plantains (to share) Finally, we enjoyed some churros. Loved the food! Definitely recommend!

I went there Sunday evening with friends. The restaurant is small but beautiful decorated. We was the only table from time we walk in until we leave. The food took a while to be ready but definitely worth it. The guacamole came fast and it was very good. The rest of the order came hoooot real temperatures soooo delicious the steak the chicken the cheese all of them so good cooked. Definitely worth the price. If you like margaritas like me take the pitcher it's like 6-7 glasses definitely worth it

A friend and i had reservations for 1pm on Sunday for brunch. We were immediately seated and our waiter was great. When we first sat down it wasn't busy so our waiter was able to recommend drinks and brunch meals. As it got busier our waiter -he was the only waiter (and it got busy fast around 2pm -typical NYC brunch rush) we waited around for our drink orders way you long.. Most of the tables in our section were getting pretty frustrated with the lack of service. A few guests seated near us got up to order their drinks at the bar. It wasn't our waiters fault.! He was busy and he was trying his best to accommodate all the tables. Which wasn't fair to him. For a NYC brunch he should of not been the only waiter on the floor!!!! Aside for the service our food and drink were delish. I had the chorizo hash and yuca fries-it was delicious and very filling. My friend had the shrimp tacos. She enjoyed her tacos. For cocktails I had the prosseco lychee mimosa which was delish and refreshing. We also had the mezcal margarita. Spicy, strong w a kick. Solid. For dessert we had the churros w dark chocolate dipping sauce. Churro were perfectly crispy and the inside w a cream filing. And w the chocolate dipping sauce. A party in your mouth. I really liked the food and vibe of this place. My only complaint was the service-our waiter did the best he could. But on Sunday for brunch , he should have had more help. I hope to come back for dinner soon. Bc honestly the food was solid good. I just didn't like the way they had 1 waiter busting his ass to attend all the tables during brunch.

Tacos are a little expensive but was indeed delicious. The guac was fresh but maybe needed a little lime. The chips were excellent, long and great for scooping the guac. Had a Dos Equis to wash it down. It's a beautiful venue and service was prompt.

My son took me here for brunch, and how happy I was he did. We had the carnitas hash, the Chorizo guacamole, and Mexican toast. Everything was delicious. The Chorizo was fried crispy and topped of some of the best guacamole I've had. The carinitas in the hash had a touch of spice, potatoes had crispy edges, and I usually don't eat sunny side up, but they cooked mine where it wasn't too runny. I checked out their happy hour menu, and yes, I will definitely be coming back here.

Wow! This is a gorgeous place in a perfect location. My husband and I stopped in here after a day visiting the Schomburg Center. Our plan was to have a cocktail and then head home, but we ended up having cocktails, pork tacos and sides and then inhaled the most delicious churros with chocolate dipping sauce before waddling over to the subway. The cocktails here are the Mayan Summer and Hotel Nacional. Delicious. And shoutout to the very attentive waiters and busboys. read more

July 9th -- I may have very well received the absolute worse service in all my years of dining in this wonderful city. My friend and I were totally ignored/overlooked throughout the night. I can tell you the appetizers were good (cerviche, guacamole), but never ate tacos or the likes as we never received service. Mind you there were about 10 patrons in the restaurant at the time. I easily could have walked out on the bill about two hours later (probably should have), but instead got up from my seat and walked to the waiter at the pay register to swipe my card...good times read more

Make sure to not buy a gift certificate from this establishment. They will not honor after 30 days. All other businesses in the area run a standard 6-12 month policy. Management was unresponsive and provided no solution or concession. read more

Good food, good vibe. Decor could be LA or Cuba. Happy hour selection is good: $8 drinks and $4 soft tacos. Asked for spicy guacamole, and it was perfectly spiced (Goldilocks). Would differently come back. This was my 3 or visit. Victor makes sure things run smooth. read more

The service here is amazing. Like, seriously, if I could give it 10 stars I would. Our waiter was super-friendly, charming, and I'm sure a little psychic - he would appear just when we needed him every time! We came for a between brunch and dinner snack and had the summer empanadas, summer salad and corn... oh, and a couple of cocktails too! Drinks were well made, food was tasty and super-fresh, although portions are small so it is on the pricey side for what you get. But the atmosphere is so chill and the interior decor is spot on (I love a good tile!) Others have recommended happy hour here, so I'll definitely be back for that! read more

Ate there on a Saturday night. Very good spot for two but it would be too loud for a larger party. Margaritas were good, not great. All the food was excellent - we shared four apps and dessert and it was plenty - mixed seafood ceviche, guacamole, tacos, empanadas, though we're not big eaters - you might want more. Excellent service, pretty place, welcoming atmosphere. We'll definitely be going back and exploring more of the menu. Certainly more expensive than lower-end Mexican restaurants, but they're on a higher culinary level, so prices not unreasonable for what it is. Nice addition to this section of Harlem. read more

I think the food is really good, just two really big problems. 1. WAY OVERPRICED and 2. SMALL PORTIONS. Would recommend coming here for happy hour ONLY. That's all it's worth paying for. In this area, glasses of wine are not $15. Period. read more

Enjoyed a wonderful meal here. Love the concept, ambiance, and design. I had the steak tacos and they were delicious. Most importantly was the treatment we received. Came here with my gilrfriend for Cinco De Mayo this past weekend! Had a great time. Wonderful weather, seated outside, not too busy so we still got a lot of attention. They had a fixed menu with just chicken mole & shrimp mole I believe. We also order this Guacamole with mango in it which was amazingly good. At this time we just had Cinco De Mayo special margaritas & beer but on our visit before this one we tried a few of their cocktails, Mayan Summer is our favorite! We told our server given the weather getting better they should focus on more refreshing meals such as the mango guacomole. Definitely will be coming again. read more

The best margarita in NYC hands down! They don't use sour mix and spend the time squeezing limes to make the best margarita! This place has become my go to for everything! Their food is great and portions are moderate. They recently reduced their happy hour time by an hour which sucks! But they added pitchers of margaritas and sangria. Saulo is my favorite server! He's friendly and checks in often. Love this place and the decor is spot on. Thank you for becoming my solace on rough days. read more

Consistently excellent food and drinks. Their steak tacos are excellent, but we've also tried everything on the menu from ceviche to churros, and have never been disappointed. So.... VERY EXCELLENT addition to the neighborhood. Food was very good. Ambiance is nice, modern, sophisticated bar/small dining room. Tasty food and decor. Service..... ok.. needs to get better. Saturday night was a bit noisy... as the room has battling music and "tequila buzz"... but it was Saturday. Drinks were very good... and eventually another bartender came. I would say they are working out a few kinks they need to put it EXCELLENT review mode. But,,, ceviche, guacamole, shrimps, etc. were all very tasty and well prepared. Would definitely return... and that is always the #1 question. So yes, go, you will enjoy. read more

Wow! Just walked out of this establishment feeling happy as ever! A wonderful place for lite fare, creative cocktails. Servers were warm, friendly, compassionate and on point. Asked about the old fashions we ordered as they were to have a chocolate mole bitter but I could not taste it when mixed with Maker's Mark bourbon; our server recommended we retry the drink but made with mezcal and what a difference. The tuna ceviche was outstanding, well thought out; the vegetarian empanadas were perfectly cooked, tasty. Also tried the roasted corn on the cob which was perfectly cooked, cleaned, seasoned, served. Could not ask for a more beautiful ambience to intimately celebrate my girlfriend's 50th birthday after a long day of work for her. Just wish I had more time here in NYC to enjoy this beautiful place again. My hat's off to you! read more

One of the best restaurants to open up in the neighborhood. It is a finer type of Mexican fare and this is reflected in their food menu and prices. The house cocktails are delicious. Fantastic little spot! Servers were very attentive and the food/drink was excellent. The indoor/outdoor interior makes it a perfect summer spot. As some people have noted, portions are on the smaller side for the prize, but I found it completely worth it for the best vegetarian tacos I've ever had. read more

I went here on a date with a lovely man a couple weeks ago. I was delighted with this experience. My food was good. I ordered steak and rice with maduros (for those who don't know, maduros are sweet fried plantains). I just wish the rice portion was bigger. It was kind of upsetting having so little rice. Other than that, my waiter and waitress were nice and attentive, kind and courteous. I would definitely come back. read more

This is absolutely my favorite Mexican Restaurant in the city. Items I get every time (though I'm sure the entire menu is great, I can't stop ordering these because they're that. good.) are the crab guacamole, coconut margarita, and carne tacos. The ambiance is stunning, the food is out of this world, and the service is top-notch. If you are looking for an incredible dining experience, make the trip uptown and check out La Diagonal. read more

Just okay. I went here for brunch with a friend. I ordered the pancakes; my friend ordered the vegetarian omelette. Both orders were bland, and flavorless. The density of the pancakes made them taste more like tortillas than pancakes. The best for both of us was the side of bacon ($5), though a small portion. The service was awful! I will stick with my neighborhood favorites. read more

This is a nice cute restaurant to have in the neighborhood. The drinks were the best part of the meal though the price paid for the meal didn't equate to the quality of the food. It did look good, and I would likely skip the biscuit sandwich and go for the huevos rancheros or tacos next time. The service was super sweet and attentive. We truly didn't realize there was another floor until we finished our meal in the enclosed heated space up front, and the server encouraged us to check it out. It's a cool set up with a distinct feel from the main floor. All in all I would check this place out again.

These are dishes originally meant for low-income Americans to fill up on cheaply; there's no limit to how good they can be, but also no floor to how bad they can get. Both were on par with the average quality found in upscale restaurants. Honestly, these are two dishes I would never order myself. To sum up: the atmosphere was great. It's also hard to get a reservation; the place was packed when we had lunch at 2 PM. The food was great! However, service was horrible. They forgot our drink orders and 3 different people returned to the table 4 different times to take the same order. Then they confused our drink order with another table. When we finally got our drinks, after about 30 minutes & at the end of our meal, they blamed the bar for the delay. However, the bar was nowhere near busy and the bartender at one point was just standing doing nothing as we waited. The drinks were good, not worth the wait. When we ordered to dessert we had to ask for cutlery twice. They dropped the dessert off and 10 minutes after it had been obvious they had no intentions of giving us cutlery. When we asked the first time, a person (who wasn't our server) came back 5 minutes later and stated "Oh I forgot". Then offered us a round of shots which never came. We weren't upset about the shots not coming because at this point we wanted to leave. When we left, we paid in cash and headed out. The server chased us down the block, yelling, "HEY". When we finally realized someone was speaking to us we stopped and turned around, she asked us if we paid. We said that we had and left it all in cash on the table. She stated "Oh you left it at the table. Okay." It's obvious she did not even check the table & decided to that chasing us down the block like we had dined and dashed was more appropriate. When it came time to order food....out of Burgers....I mean ground beef is readily available at any supermarket isn't it? Server didn't bother to let us know any of this prior to our order. Beautiful quaint spot with nice decor in a nice location. The food is good but you can get the same cuisine (sans hip atmosphere) a few blocks over in Spanish Harlem for a fraction of the price. Great bespoke cocktails, but again a very pricey for the area. read more
