*when this place was open* Pre-covid. This is a place that you will drive by over and over again and not even notice. But dont judge the outside, along with the inside by appearances. This place has a dedicated following. I typically get a breakfast sandwich or a carna asada burrito with their delicious hot sauce. It's hot. It's what you call a "quema culo". Wish they would open again. read more

My husband and I absolutely love this place and thrilled it has reopened post pandemic. We missed their breakfast burritos and hot salsa when they were closed and as soon as we found out they were back open immediately took our family to grab the best breakfast burritos in the world. You want authentic Mexican food that's a great price point AND beyond good? If you answered yes to any and/or all of the above then this spot is waiting for you. Love coming to this spot when I'm in town and met the owner once who quickly made friends and went on to talk about how proud and good his food is. I love their food! After a while of getting breakfast burritos and pancakes, I started getting different breakfast items. Their super croissant and breakfast burger are delicious!!! They both have a type of sauce that complements the food. If you are ordering to go, I would recommend calling ahead since it can get busy. The staff os friendly and try to get your food out asap. read more

Driving on PCH we got hungry and we found this off the beaten path place in Port Hueneme. We haven't had breakfast but it's close to lunchtime so we stopped at this place. I had their pancakes and a side of machaca and machaca burrito. The pancakes a bit heavy but really good. We had the green, red and habanero salsa. Habanero salsa super hot but flavorful. I couldn't stop pouting it on my food even though my mouth was on fire. The flour tortillas were soft and you can tell It's homemade. Alex not sure if he's the owner, was very nice and helpful. He came by to check up on us. We told him if we live near we would come by more to try the rest of the dishes. We heard the tamales are really good. But we're stuff so we didn't order it. After we paid he came with three tamales for us to take home to try. What an awesome customer service. I'm not writing this because of that. I want you to try this place when you're in the area and looking for authentic good food. I really enjoyed it. read more

Omg where to start !!! Ok so I went in for a burrito of course a breakfast one it really good the staff was really nice and respectful to me and my wife that's a plus my thing is they had a sandwich called el Popeyes I was thinking of getting it but I didn't I ask if it's good they staff said yes you'll love it so I was going to pay and the next thing you know I have a el Popeyes in my bag for free are maybe a simple not complaining but when I try'd the SANDWICH OMG IT WAS SUPER GOOD I WENT BACK THAT FRIDAY AND IT WAS SO AMAZING you guys got to try it no joke I swear you have to try hands down the best place in all of SOUTH OXNARD thank u to all the staff I will return Monday lol read more

This is by far one of the best places to eat and by far the most friendliest staff ever as well. The server Alex was awesome and would come check up on us every little bit to make sure everything was going well. My favorite part was the fact that the owner made me a plate of Fajitas which was not listed on the menu. She was very friendly and didn't hesitate to make sure all of our needs were met. We came out to Port Hueneme for a basketball tournament. There weren't a lot of places to eat near our hotel and some of the places east were a little suspect. I arrived at opening and got my food pretty quick. Service was good. I ordered: Breakfast burrito - ok and worth getting given the few options in the area that I could find. The potatoes were mixed in pretty well and the eggs weren't too dry. The seasoning was good. The sausages tasted like those little pre-cook sausages (brown & serve) you get in a box for a dollar or two at Walmart. I really wish there was cheese in it (or enough for me to taste) and was really disappointed in the salsa. I love salsa in my burrito, but barely tasted anything in it. BEC Criossant - This was really good. They were pretty stingy with the bacon (one slice?) but the eggs were good and the croissant was amazing. Cookie - I don't remember which one, but it was yellow. It was really good. A little dry, which is the style you would expect from a Mexican bakery, and really tasty. Jalapeno and cheese tamale - Delicious. Not dry, didn't fall apart while I was eating it, and a good amount of pepper and cheese. read more

La Especial Bakery is a Hueneme landmark. I know, technically it's in Oxnard, but its proximity to Hueneme Beach and delicious comidas are what makes locals Love it. Family owned and operated for decades, La Especial makes great Mexican food at great prices, and it is always consistent. My mom discovered them when she was working at Metters Industries, a few doors down, during the 80s. We've been going there ever since, often twice a week. Whenever friends visit from out of town, this is a must stop destination. While they have a few tables inside, we usually grab our burritos to go, along with a Jamaica or Horchata, and head to the beach to watch the waves while we eat. Especial has a full menu of meats, but I usually keep it simple: beans, rice and cheese burrito, hot salsa, onions y ciLantro. If you haven't tried this spot yet, check it out. AMAZING!!! If i could give 10 stars i would. I dont even know where to start. From the moment me & my family walked in we felt SO welcome. Walked over to look at the menu, we were greeted by the nicest man who asked us if it was our 1st time, & he promised us it would not be our last. And he was right! He explained the whole menu to us wich was VERY VERY helpful. The ladies who work there are also very nice & u can see them making ur food right in front of u. We ordered a little bit of everything. The kids breakfast combo & albondigas, breakfast burrito, chicken mole encheladas, chips & salsa. He even gave us 2 tamales to try. And EVERYTHING was SO delecious. Pretty good spot. was looking for a breakfast spot that opens up early. I had an early shift nearby so decided to stop in here. always seen this place but never thought twice about it. But so glad I stopped by. got myself a breakfast burrito and added some potatoes w chorizo. soooo good. potatoes were soft and the breakfast burrito has the good breakfast essentials. Sometimes they forget I put my order in or maybe they are just to busy. I always call In my order and have to still wait when I arrive. Sometimes they add yellow cheese to my macho nachos but what ever, they don't go with yellow cheese . I love them asada nachos, my kids love them as well. The breakfast burrito is super bomb. Pancakes are the best as well. Some lady's are so nice, some are just having a bad morning I guess. The dude there is so attentive. read more

Friendly family owned. Traditional Mexican food better than your mama makes. "Drop the mic" best chile colorado. Serious chile rellenos which is my favorite thing in life. Tamales better than homemade. They don't cut corners on quality because you can taste it throughout. The quality in the chile colorado and tamales shows in the shredded beef and pork. Not fatty or gristly. The masa is light and flavorful not just a carrier where you would want to push it aside. We enjoy all our food there from champurado to chile colorado to veggie avocado sandwich. So they are not just a bakery. Flour tortillas are hand made. Just go! read more

History

Established in 1972.

A classic Mom & Pop store. Our Father had a dream of owning his own bakery. He had been a baker all his life in Mexico City and was a very good baker, an artist of his craft one might say. Our father was in his 40’s when he started La Especial Bakery along with the rest of the family. We opened in 1972 as one of the few Mexican bakeries in town but times change and so did we. Mexican food was added and that made the path that we continue today. The family gladly continues the tradition of serving our family recipes, homemade masa for tamales as well as all of the food our customers enjoy. We definitely are more restaurant than bakery nowadays and we thank our loyal customers of many years and always welcome new ones stopping in for the first time.

The process was super easy and made the wait feel seamless. We were seated on the "outdoor" patio, which was absolutely delightful. It's covered, so it feels like you're inside, but it's still open-air and pup friendly, which we loved. They even have a pup menu and bring out little metal water bowls. Our doggo was living his best life. The menu is large with tons of options. We initially tried using the QR code (which is great because it includes photos), but ultimately asked for a paper menu, sometimes it's just easier to flip through. My husband ordered The California (eggs, bacon, and pancakes). This breakfast also comes with toast and your choice of potatoes. We upgraded to the chili cheese tots, thinking it was just a small upcharge from the standard side, and didn't realize until we got back to the hotel that we were charged $8 for them, which was a bit disappointing. That said, the tots were tasty (just eat them quickly because they cool off fast!). His eggs were cooked perfectly, but the $3.50 upcharge to add blueberries to the pancakes felt steep, and the bacon was mostly fat and a bit overcooked. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros with poached eggs, and the eggs were absolutely perfect. The dish was bursting with flavor. My only critique was that the beans were a bit too liquid-heavy, which made the tortilla very soggy, I couldn't finish as much as I would've liked because of that. The Bloody Marys, though? So good. Highly recommend! We both loved them. Our server was pleasant and friendly. Oh and there was a Char Man hot sauce on the table that was EPIC! Overall, we would definitely come back, we'd just try a few different menu items next time... except for the Bloody Marys. Those are a repeat order for sure.

Management needs to better balance takeout volume with the experience of guests sitting in the restaurant. When you're cranking out food that's not representing you well, it's time to step back and rethink what you're doing.
