I love any Mexican restaurant that serves 2 salsas when you sit down. Great margaritas I had one. I think it had orange or something in it. It's a house special really good. I have to couch that I come from an area with heavy population from Latin American countries, including pockets of first-generation Mexicans, so my bar may be higher than Wisconsin in general for what is good Mexican food. So let's start with service. Greeted when I walked in, saw my friend and walked right over. Server visited frequently during the night to make sure we were well attended, provided a box for my friend's daughter. I saw a happy birthday celebration at another table. With that, we can call the ambiance festive. It's an old train station, but doesn't really carry that vibe. The main thing is that results in an unusual layout. Not a big deal. Parking, though, is a festival unto itself. I parked in the first lot I saw, a tiny, poorly maintained lot in the back of the place that really doesn't seem fit for the public. But they seem to allow it. There are other signed lots that seem too crowded, also poorly maintained and striped. There's the street, with parking full on both sides. Clearly people love this place enough to take up the whole block, but I don't think Estacion quite got the response. And now, the food. The menu reads like a diner - page after page, similar headings with different features. Took me a long time to figure out what I wanted and confirm that I'd seen everything. I went with Combinacion Azteca. * Stuffed poblano was very bland, both in cheese and spice level. * Pork tamal was okay but mostly tamal. * Steak was very flavorful but not "a steak", rather pieces of steak that were dumped on top of the other food. I cleared them off to the side so I could pair them with the rice and beans. Rice was good, beans were good, nothing outstanding there. So I'd say: 5 stars for service, 4 stars for ambiance, 3 stars for food, 2 stars for parking. Hey, it's what the kid wanted. read more

I have not been to this place in years. I went to Carroll so we used to come here quite frequently. I was surprised at hard parking was to find on a Thursday night. There has definitely been a lot of growth in the area. Thursdays feature two for one house margaritas. I love their horchata so I went with that and the combination platter. The combination platter comes with a pork taco, a steak tostada, and a cheese enchilada plus rice and beans. While everything was really good, the taco was amazing! Will for sure get three if those tacos next time. My sister's nachos were quite filling and she gave me the leftovers to take home. They reheated great in the oven. The waitstaff was great as we (12 people) hung out at the table waiting to surprise our friend for her birthday. This is a Waukesha landmark- the train, the food- it's been solid for years. Been in Waukesha 5 years and decided it was time to give La Estacion a try for lunch w a friend. It was taco Tuesday, so I ordered pulled pork, fish and a shrimp taco. And added some street corn for good measure. The tacos were loaded with the meats and all had avocado. I was impressed with portion and flavor for sure. Ended up taking the shrimp one home with some corn because I was full. Oh, the corn was smoky and sweet, with a bit too much lime, but still good. All in all, pretty dang good. I am a big fan of Mexican food and was excited to try this one in a cool location in Waukesha. We had a large group and called ahead to reserve a table. Upon walking in, it was a mix of cleaning products and Mexican food smell. We waited about 10 minutes for a table to be ready, and were sat in the train car. It was nice private area to dine in with a larger group, but it was HOT! Sun was coming in the windows and there was little to no airflow throughout, and only got hotter as we went on. The waiter did turn on some air conditioning unit at the other end of the car, but it didn't do much. The menu is pretty traditional Mexican offering a variety of options, as well as a variety of cocktails. The food came out pretty quick and was enjoyable, but not super impressive. The waiter did not stop by often to refill waters and check on drinks, which was surprising. The bathrooms were not very clean and other parts of the restaurant didnt look very clean. There are areas where they could use some updates, but overall not bad. read more

If you long for a great steak burrito, not only is the Burrito Suizo at La Estacion the most delicious I've ever eaten, the second best burrito I can think of enjoying elsewhere isn't close. It's an amazingly consistent menu item, as well. I've enjoyed the burrito suizo for three decades, and it never disappoints! As for the restaurant itself, it has a cool vibe with unique decorating and painted frescos. Everything is train themed, since the restaurant is a former train station, with a train car on tracks outside for added ambiance. I've always found the service to be helpful and prompt, with the sit down experience being the typical tortilla chips and salsa. The drinks are good, too. Tip: For an authentic and unique experience, order an agua fresca horchata. It's an NA drink that tastes like you're drinking a cold, liquid snickerdoodle. Delicious, and I'm sure loaded with sugar. The overall ambiance at the restaurant is a lot of fun. Old trains, mexican decor, and the outdoor seating area is wonderfully spacious. The ceilings inside are quite high cause for a lot of echoing. If you are looking for a quiet meal I would avoid sitting inside. Having the old train cars is such a unique feature - it is unfortunate that you are unable to sit inside of them to enjoy your meal. Our service was great! She was friendly and attentive. She asked multiple times throughout the meal if everything was good and if we needed anything. Hot sauce is by request only, it is not on the table and I highly suggest you request some. The sauce is necessary because to food, while good, is bland. We got ground beef chimichangas (they do not come with cheese on top and she did not ask if we wanted it) and steak fajitas. There was not much flavor to either dish. To echo that the rice and beans were also bland. We were given a salsa bowl of hot sauce and used nearly the entire thing. read more

This is a update, Stopped by for a nice dinner out. We have been pleased with La Estacion in the past. Aside for me, I like more traditional foods but as discussed on my last review I get they have to keep cost under control and some of the more traditional type dishes are more for people like me and not the general public. We were treated so well I have never had such great service. Very attentive hostess and waitress. Buss person. The food was perfect and very good. My wife ordered a pina colada it came quickly and was a nice size price was also very nice compared to other specialty drinks at other places. It was garnished and she thought it was very good. We received or food and were eating when the hostess came with an other drink apologizing that her first drink was not garnished as pictured and gave her a complimentary new one. They both stopped back several times to refill water and check with us. Our bill came only after they politely asked if we wanted it. The comped both drinks and apologized again. Unbelievable service Nice to go to a restaurant that showed their appreciation for our business. Oh full meal and dessert split $35.00 wow couldn't believe it. We arrived early for a reservation and waited only 3 minutes to be seated. The dining room is decorated with a train theme and looked nice. Our table had chips, salsa, water and dinner menus, but no utensils, napkins nor small plates. We waited 8 minutes for our server and he asked for our drink order however, we had no drink menus. It took awhile to get these menus but we ordered drinks and an order of guacamole which arrived before our drinks. The chips were average and the guacamole was bland. We ordered food and again everything was slow. We had to ask our server for everything at least twice. Food was alright but mostly bland and I had to ask for hot sauce. Our server never asked how our food was and if we needed anything. I watched 2 other servers and like our server, no smile and no warmth. I'm disappointed, I was hoping for more. read more

I have driven past this place for at least a decade and who knows if has been the same restaurant and I have even been to the places across the street but I have never stopped here until today. The building is an actual railroad depot with rail cars on the property that is converted to the restaurant. The place is large with several dining areas and a small bar. They have a nice outdoor patio and plenty of parking. I decided to have a cocktail at the bar and what the hell I would eat at bar also. I started with chips and salsa while waiting for my strawberry margarita. The strawberry margarita was blended and ok but very loose. The salsa was two versions with a chunky mild and a soupy hot which were ok. The chips were good because they were fresh and seasoned well. The menu is large with a lot of choices but I will always get a combination if it's on the menu to sample more items. My combination plate had a pork taco, steak tostada and cheese enchilada with rice and beans. The plate looked good and very big to my surprise. Everything was just ok and nothing was seasoned like the chips at all. Overall it was just average and ok and not very authentic like some of the places in the real neighborhoods but it was ok. La Estacion has been around for as long as I can remember. I always called them the, "train restaurant". It is unfortunate that you can't sit in the train portion anymore. It was what made the restaurant unique. We ended up here for a bday and it also happened to be Taco Tuesday. There were 5 different tacos ranging from $1.50 - $2.00. I got an assortment and they were fine but nothing stood out. I did enjoy the bistec con rajas y queso and their side refried beans. Portions are below average compared to other Mexican restaurants. Service was slow but I assume the restaurant was busy with their Taco Tuesday promotion. It was slow to get a refill, hot sauce, and extra tortillas. The restaurant is a decent size and can accommodate large groups. It wouldn't be my choice to come here again but it seems to be a Waukesha landmark. read more

I think this was my second time here. I haven't been in years. We were sat in a corner that was freezing, but I was OK. My family are a bunch of freeze babies. The pico was good the chips were cold. I'd say about average on the rice and beans. I had fajitas, I got flour tortillas, really good. The dining room needs a TV or something, it felt weird. Wrapped in a flour tortilla little tasteless chicken quantity. Salsa is bland tasting with no spices. Chips so so. Service at the bar is by only one younger guy who looks stressed, and is very disorganized. Never asks if we wanted anything else. He seems put off just being there working. I loved this adorable use of an old train station and train cars. I heard that you could eat on the cars (not sure if this is true or not, we are in the main station in a beautifully decorated dining room). The food is amazing!!! I had the chicken with poblano mole. It was sooooo good. The guacamole was great as was the fresh salsa (the one that looks like pico. The other one was just kind of a plain tomato sauce that I wasn't impressed with). The flautas were excellent according to my sister and grandmother. There is a great variety as far as beans go. You have options beyond just refried beans and the rice was very good. I had the yellow Spanish rice. I also had the cafe Jalisco (black coffee infused with cinnamon). It is good brewed coffee as far as it goes. I didn't get a big hit of cinnamon as far as that goes and I couldn't tell the difference between the regular coffee and the cafe Jalisco. But they are the same price and it is good coffee. Our waiter was very attentive and he made sure we were taken care of and we had everything we needed. Also, the soups were very good. They come in huge bowls. The one my dad tried had four pieces of chicken and the caldo de res (beef soup) was also very good. There was so much that there was plenty to take home. I was pleasantly surprised to find the high quality Mexican food in Waukesha. I would absolutely go back and I would love to maybe be seated in one of the cars if that is permitted. read more

I have gone to this restaurant multiple times on a Friday when they have their lunch buffet and I can say the food and service has been consistently good every time that I have gone there. For $12.95 the buffet food rivals food that you would order off a menu if not better. The meat selection they have varies, but you can generally expect a chicken, beef, and sometimes a pork dish as well and they are well prepared and flavorful. The salad bar uses good quality greens and strawberry and goat cheese and they have a nice chocolate cake usually for dessert. The restaurant is part of an old historic train station and has old train cars as part of its restaurant. The music is excellent as I'm a fan of Bachata music and was surprised to hear it playing in a Mexican restaurant. On other days I have heard Salsa, Merengues, and also the traditional Mariachis music. The wait staff is always pleasant and welcoming and service with a smile. read more

Yum yum yum. We've been here less than a month and have already eaten at La Estacion twice. The food is delicious, and the service is mostly good. We had some trouble with our take out order after Christmas, but assumed it was because they were pretty busy. However - the online ordering site had a salad listed that they do not make anymore. The staff kindly made the salad when we complained about not getting it in our order (without charge), but it was definitely frustrating. We're excited to go back, and hope that we can bump this up to a five after a few more visits. read more

Sysco salsa with "tostadas" etc. Fodor's would indicate this as a great first date alternative if you don't want to hear your date. Oh well... the old train station is pretty cool. read more

First let me say that I still miss "the Depot," which was a fixture in Waukesha for years. But La Estacion has more than made up for its long absence. Having now moved from the Dallas, TX area back to Waukesha, I am "hurtin for certain" for some REALLY GOOD Tex Mex. Mexican and Tex Mex restaurants are literally everywhere in Dallas, and due to Texas' proximity to Mexico, we got very spoiled when it comes to good Mexican food. Even the little holes in the wall Mexican places were something to write home about, and many places around DFW sold amazing handmade tamales, the "producción familiar" of which kicked into high gear around the holidays (mamas, tia's, y abuelas all with their own special family recipes). So I thought my quest for Mexican food would be relegated now to Taco Bell. La Estacion to the rescue! Every time I've eaten there, the food has been good, tasty, and plentiful. It has helped quell those "hangry" hunger pangs I get when I'm itching for good Mexican food. However, each time I have visited more recently, I've noticed that the restaurant is getting a bit long in the tooth, and the ambience is starting to look a bit tired and well-worn. I know it's the way of things, but a minor interior facelift and/or a menu update would not be unwelcome. But overall, La Estacion is a great place to get a taste of Mexico! read more

Sry to say but this place has gone way down hill. I've tried it a cpl times recently. The first time was horrible. Decided to give them another chance 2nd time horrible. My rice was more like risotto shape. Not a single grain of rice held its shape because it was old or had been sitting till it was mush. Beans sub par good flavor, watery. My steak taco tasted like a cheaper cut of meat than the ground beef. Had a bizarre meat flavor and was cut into chiclet sized pieces with no Mexican seasoning on the meat. Just a weird off smell of the meat. My nephew loves tacos, he spit his ground beef taco out after the first bite. It was off. The spicy salsa was good. That was about it. Chips were hot and fresh and service very prompt on the beautiful patio after three months of quarantine and our first meal out. Unfortunately tonight I think I ordered the wrong item. Had a hankering for stuffed poblano peppers but they missed their mark. Very bland taste as it was dipped in egg batter and stuffed with a small amount of plain cheese. The peppers were still a little crunchy. My dining companion loved his Mole platter. Horchata to go was delicious with the perfect amount of cinnamon and big enough to share. read more

I've been going here for Sunday brunch a few time year and absolutely love it. We'd go more often, but I usually work Sundays. Tried this for the first time yesterday. Overall it wasn't bad. It wasn't good either. Very average Mexican food. Nothing really blew me away but nothing disappointed me either (except the chips and salsa - the spicier one was good but the mild salsa literally tasted like bland tomato soup). The atmosphere was pretty neat - I like all the historic stuff. I just wasn't very impressed with the food. Very basic - nothing to write home about. read more
