Food is solid, service is fantastic, nice environment - especially the back patio. We've dined in, ordered carry out, and ordered delivery many times. The food is consistent. This last time dining in, the food was the best we've had it. We ordered Mexican taco dinner and Tacos Al pastor. The steak was cooked very nicely and the salsa was really, really good! I am in the area for a couple weeks and am desperately searching for a couple goto places to eat. This ain't it. I got a Enchiladas Rancheras with chicken. This is an enchilada with a red sauce. I was originally looking at the Camarones A La Diabla but decided to take what I thought would be a safer bet. The sauce had that sort of chili bitterness that I get when I make homemade chili sauce with dried chilis and keep the soaking water instead of throwing it out. The flavor was just unpleasant. I pulled some pieces of chicken out of the enchiladas and there was little sauce in the enchiladas and the chicken was just straight boiled chicken. Bland. There was very little good about the food. Bad sauce, bland chicken. The rice was perfectly fine but the beans were a little less than average. So that's it. I'm outside a large city and I've really been struggling to find good food. read more

This was our first time at this location. I'm so glad that we finally made it in. The first thing we immediately noticed when walking in was how clean and organized everything was/is. Super impressive. The staff was warm and inviting so we were feeling hopeful. The food did not disappoint. My husband had the Pechuga De Pollo En Mole Poblano--which is grilled chicken breast with mole poblano sauce and topped with melted white cheese served with rice and beans and tortillas. Came here with my girlfriend bc we were craving Mexican on a Saturday night. The place is absolutely massive inside but coming in you wouldn't think it would be so big inside. I couldn't imagine if this place could be at full capacity based on the parking lot size. I got the CHICKEN PICADO & it was good. You do get a really good value for everything you get. Especially since you get a basket of chips & salsa for free. Would recommend them simply bc it is just good casual food. I picked a lunch time that was not too busy to take a young friend of mine to lunch. The place was not overly busy; we were shown to our table by a pleasant hostess. I was expecting some really good food given how frequently I see their jammed parking lot. The selections were more than sufficient to find your favorites. But the service was indifferent and the food mediocre. I had a relatively tasteless chili relleno, and my companion ordered a combination plate. There two Botanas locations under different ownership as a result of a divorce. This is the better location, hence, the better half (so to speak). It's got excellent service and good mixed drinks. The food is Americanized Mexican, and if that's what you want you will be happy here. If that's what you know to expect, then you won't be disappointed. Two stars for decent service. Went there on a Friday for lunch and waitress and staff were nice. The restaurant was clean and nicely decorated inside. I ordered the plate lunch with chunky beef and prob the worst Mexican food I've ever had. Everyone has diff taste buds and preferences but you can get better Mexican food esp for the price at other restaurants in the area. Disappointed because I've been there once before when they first opened and food was equally horrible but was hoping it was just due to them being new, but this confirms it's just bad and not for me. It's cool. Nice indoor and outdoor seating areas. Solid drink selection. Prices are average for the area. Private parking lot. Solid service. There is your Botana's summary. The experience begins when you park in the private lot and walk in the front door. There is a hostess area, then a large U shaped bar in classic Wisconsin style. Here you can have a drink while you wait, order dinner, or hang out and check out one of the many TVs on the wall. They even give you free chips and salsa while you are at the bar, which is something I love about Mexican places in Milwaukee. The seating areas are nothing fancy, but more than adequate. No complaints, but nothing special either. There is a strange large wooden box in the back patio with signs saying "do not climb." Not really sure what that is about, but it is the focal point of the back patio. The margaritas were not strong, but had good flavor. I had frozen and on the rocks. both were ok. The food itself was tasty. I went with enchiladas, and was happy with the chunky beef, sauces, and flavor. The service was adequate as well. In honor of passing math class (basic algebra, don't judge) , which is my first semester back to college in four years, I decided to branch out and try something new! Was feeling tacos or burritos, but enchiladas were calling my name as I haven't tried them before. I've never tried Botanas II, but they had great reviews and looked legit. I got the seafood enchiladas; and, because I'm a sucker for sides, got guac and sour cream. The delivery was pretty quick for what appears (from yelp stalking) as a cute family restaurant, and actually delivered 15 minutes before I expected! My first experience with enchiladas couldn't have been a better experience. Soooo tasty. First bite was super flavorful and had a whole shrimp (they didn't skimp on the seafood!). This will definitely be my go to place for Mexican from now on! To add to their awesomeness, they included salsa and tomatoes and onions for free. The cherry on top of the delicious enchilada cake was this adorable cup with my name on it! It seems trivial, but it was really thoughtful, and as someone who doesn't have a commonly spelled name, I never get cups with the correct spelling. Tl:dr great service but food needs work I would agree with the last few lower starred reviews. The service we had was GREAT - but that's where things kind of fell off. The space is a very vibrant green jungle theme with giant painted animals everywhere (including the bathrooms) I'm not sure if this is how the main location is setup (since this is II) but there is a slight "older" feeling to it. The server so was nice and the chips were fresh and the salsa was complimentary and had a good flavor to it (could have gotten a hotter option - always hotter in my book lol). The meal was medium priced, but what I struggled with was the food. Just average. There wasn't much spice or event seasoning on the meats in any of my items (chimichanga, enchilada, taco). Also, there really wasn't anything on them (lettuce, tomato, cilantro, onion, etc.) and there could have been more cheese. High hopes a second time around will result in a different food experience and same excellent service. read more

Their shrimp tastes like SOAP. I've been there twice in the past two months after moving to the neighborhood and I've tried shrimp dishes both times. Both times it tasted like soap. I actually threw up when I got home because the taste was making me so sick. Also, I leave the tails on their shrimp when it's served to you. Went there about 7 pm Sat night. Not crowded. Got seated right away. Sat there for nearly 10 minutes and no one waited on us. My boyfriend got his coat on. I caught the hostess and asked here where our waiter was? Table next to us same thing. We finally got our drinks. They were good. Beer and strawberry daiquiri were good. Food then came fast. Botanas II reminds me of when the original Botanas opened before the food and service went south. I wasn't expecting much but I was impressed. The guacamole was kind of bland so I added some salt and their salsa and then it was perfect. The salsa they serve actually has a nice kick and good flavor. We always ask for a side of green salsa which is typically spicier. They told us this time it was free and next time it will be a charge. The green salsa came out piping hot in a big bowl....confusing....stick with the regular red salsa. My friend ordered the steak fajitas and it came out with a big portion of steak that was very tender unlike some other places. The combination platters were good and the meat had good flavor. Rice and beans were very typical but not dry. The place was hopping on a Monday night so expect a crowd for some time. They are very busy so don't expect your food in 5 minutes like other Mexican restaurants. Which is good because it means they are trying to make it fresher vs. scooping it out of a trough. Also, get here for happy hour because they have half off margaritas from 2pm to 6pm! Botanas II isn't the most authentic Mexican restaurant but the food and service were good enough for many return visits. Also, it doesn't hurt that they installed huge curved flat panel TV's. The food has a different flavor than most of the Mexican restaurants in the area. The flavors are simpler and somehow feel more honest, more like you'd get at home. The enchiladas and chimichangas were delicious, with melted cheese and tender meat throughout. The chicken enchilada soup was amazing. I'd come back just for that. I also love the fresh tomato and red pepper flavor of the table salsa with just the right heat. The black bean soup and tamales were good, but I didn't like them as much as the other dishes. The decor of the place is pretty cool. Its colorful without being cartooney. I like the night sky painted ceiling in the back dining room, and the colorful lighting in the bar. The large open space, tile floors, and basic chairs give the back rooms a little bit of a cafeteria feel though. but the hand painted murals help to offset that. They have two huge flat screens facing the bar. One was tuned to sports, one to the Disney channel (genius for family dining with small kids). The service was great. Our server Crystal was always available in the distance, ready to come over with a simple gesture if we needed anything. (Granted, the place was pretty slow at the time.) I have never seen this place in this area as far as I can remember until now so it must be relativity new and I went over not knowing what to expect. First off the lot was just about full at 2pm on a Sunday so that was a good sign. As I walked in I was instant greeted and shown to my table while she got on a radio and alerted someone I was being seated. The chips and salsa came right away. The chips were warm and the salsa was not chunky like I like but it was good and had some heat to it. The place was very nice with tile floors, rich wood and colorful walls with a mural. On my way to the table I saw the nice bar and and said I would sit at the bar instead and she got on the radio again to notify someone of the change. Service was kind of annoying because before I could settle in and relax my server was all over me for my order and I told her to give me a few minutes and then she asked if I wanted a drink and I said again in a few minutes, let me look over the menu. I wanted to see if they had some special drinks for this location but no bar stuff on the menu. One thing caught my eye on the menu and that was # 27 milanesa and I had a lime margarita. The margarita was too thick to drink right away and it was good. The food came quick, see my pictures. # 27 is a thin breaded steak, beans, rice, pico de gallo, guacamole and corn tortilla garnished with lettuce and tomato. I like to taste everything separately before I dig in. The breaded steak was tasty. The rice was cooked perfect, firm and not mushy. The beans were good and on the thick side, I hate loose beans. The guacamole was outstanding because it tasted very good and very smooth and creamy. The pico de gallo was so mild that maybe thats not what it was. The corn tortillas were warm and good. The plate was probably the absolute best Mexican plate I have had because of the quality and the combination of items. Wow this place has moved to the top in the category of the best Mexican places in Milwaukee. Overall the whole experience I had was wonderful and the food was great along with outstanding service. Love this place! They serve chips and salsa while you wait and the chips are warm. I have tried many items here, but my favorites are the fajitas and the giant chimichanga. The portions are very generous as it is pretty common to see people leaving with take home containers. They are limiting seating, wearing masks, social distancing. Had Botanas delivered for the first time and it did not disappoint. Boyfriend ordered a few things ala carte (tacos, quesadilla and a chimichanga). He said they were all pretty good. I got the tequila shrimp. It was good- the only thing I was expected was it to be more spicy. (I just love spice!!) Next time I'll ask for hot salsa to add some heat. Overall food was hot and fresh. First visit to Botanas II on Thursday nite, early, at about 4:30 PM on 8/10/2017. We were early to meet a friend and decided to sit at the bar. We were immediately met with a grinning, happy face and a hearty greeting from bartender "Anthony," who truly turned out to be the ambassador for this restaurant (from our point of view, that is). He got us up to speed on the daily drink and food specials, and then kept a close eye on us, all with a large smile, a happy demeanor and a sincere love for his job and the restaurant. Upon ordering drinks, he served us chips and salsa. Chips were warm, cripsy and tasty. Salsa tasted homemade and excellent. Well, because of Anthony, we decided to just eat at the bar, which was perfect. We ordered a large guacamole to go with our chips. The guacamole was obviously freshly made and perfect; NOT over salted, which happens at Midwest Mexican restaurants way too often for my taste. Though we ordered a large, it came in the size of a small soup cup ($8.50; I think a bit pricey for the amount of guacamole served). I had three Al Pastor soft tacos, served in a very traditional style with a slice of avocado, cilantro and diced onion. Cheryl had her favorite (and just about the only dish she orders at Mexican restaurants): Cheese enchiladas with the house red sauce (chili rojo). Our third member had the taco salad. All of us thought our meals were excellent. My criticism: They boast about a happy hour on the website and when you go to the bar. But the happy hour, in terms of drinks, is just a discount on margaritas. No tequila shots, no Mexican beers, nada mas mi amigos (nothing else, my friends)! I found that very strange. Now, in their defense, their happy hour on two days of the week (I forgot what Anthony said, but believe it may be on Tuesdays and Thursdays), there are $1.00 simple tacos (ground beef) at the bar. Just thought I'd mention this: I assumed that Botanas II was owned and operated by the same owner as Botanas on fifth street. However, Anthony advised us that it indeed is a separate restaurant and there is no association, other than the name and past relationship of the owners. All in all, we will definitely return to this Botanas II when in the neighborhood or, for that matter, when we feel like Mexican food and want to be served by a great, happy, smiling bartender. The guacamole is disappointing. Way less intriguing to the palate than Jose's Blue sombrero's fresh made ones. I had to mix more chili pepper and other sauce myself to make it ok for my taste. Edit: I made my comment beaded on my most recent visit (before the restaurant offered fresh table side made guac) and the premise guacamole from their regular menu. So it does not represent my opinion about their new offer of fresh table side guacamole. I will need to personally try it to give it a fair assessment. read more

Service was great, very friendly and our food came quick. Drinks were great as well. My boyfriend got steak tacos and he said they were good, I got chicken tacos and they were okay.
