I went here for breakfast and really enjoyed the food. I ordered one of the breakfast sandwiches, El Classico l, which is bacon, egg, cheese, and a tasty sauce on a sweet Mallorca bun. It was very good, although tragically the yolk exploded when I took the first bite - but it was good even without egg! The bun is just right - not too sweet, but a good contrast with the savory sandwich. It did fall apart while I was eating it (the spiral unwound), so it got a bit messy, but it was worth it. The quesito is a little flaky pastry with a sweet cream cheese filling. It was lovely, and I'm not even a big fan of puff pastry. I would definitely recommend this place for breakfast, and I'll be back for dinner to try more of their sandwiches for sure. The restaurant is set up so that you order at your table with a QR code (or for takeout on their website), not at the counter. It's self-service and they have water, silverware, plates, etc. out for you to take. I'm not a big fan of QR code ordering, but it went fairly smoothly, and I like that they let you keep a 'tab' open for your table so that you can keep ordering until you're ready to leave. It feels a bit impersonal, and I'm not sure what would happen if you didn't have a smart phone on you, but the service was fast and the food was good! Never tried this place until my friend's birthday! It was definitely a place worth visiting again. I ordered the shrimp mofongo with the pineapple and guava milkshake. I've never had mofongo, but wow! It was so flavorful and the shrimp was cooked perfectly. The milkshake was not like the typical milkshake you'd typically receive at a restaurant. It was far less sweet and really focused on those fruit and milky flavors. It was delicious and refreshing! The service was good, and the food came out quickly! Woohoo! This was my first time eating Puerto Rican food and it was delicious. La Famosa in Navy Yard was the perfect spot for my friends and me this past Monday evening. This sped up the service and we got our food quickly and paid once we were ready to leave. Very efficient! Hope to see more restaurants like this. ENSALADA DE PULPO - 13 I've only had octopus a few times, and this experience was not bad. It kind of reminded me of cerviche (which isn't my go-to, to be honest). My friends really enjoyed it, so I would recommend it if you like this kind of salad. I did really enjoy the tostones (fried plantains) on the side. Went here for a casual birthday dinner with some friends on a week night. We were able to sit immediately wherever we wanted and they do their menu and ordering by QR code so we didn't need to wait for menus or a waiter or anything to get started. Neighborhood staple! I absolutely love this place. It's so nice to have Puerto Rican food in the Navy Yard área. I recently stopped by for breakfast. I placed my order online for pickup. The Classico breakfast sandwich is so damn good. The housemade mallorca is perfection. I almost thought about going back for another one so I could have it for lunch. The coquitatte is a delightful morning coffee drink. I visited for dinner with a girlfriend a few months ago and we had a good ole time. I was fasting so I stuck to the vegetarian options and mocktails. The pastelillos and tostones were both really good. I think I had a virgin mojito for mocktail. The mocktails don't show up online but they do show up on the menu when you're in person. The restaurant is cute pretty spacious. We both felt like we had plenty of space and weren't close to the other tables near us. I don't know if it's still like this but there was a QR code on the table that we used to order. My visit here was very unexpected. I planned to go to dinner nearby, but they were booked. I was hangry and needed a place to eat dinner--stat! Looking at Google Maps, I saw La Famosa come up. I had never been to a Puerto Rican restaurant, so I was excited. I was able to get in and grab a spot at the bar without a problem. The bartender was awesome and gave me great suggestions. I started with the boletas de queso, which came out super quickly. The mix of flavors was ON POINT. That sauce... mmmm. Awesome service and amazing food! Came in on a Tuesday evening and was able to be seated immediately. Even though I was going to be sitting at the bar, I called ahead and ensured I could order from the full menu and to check the wait. Brandon got me seated right away, put in my order quickly, and got to working on my drink. The drinks were on point. I started with the La Pera which is made with LF's house-made spiced rum, passionfruit and pear nectar, Fever-tree ginger beer, and fresh grated nutmeg. Perfect drink for Winter or any time. Of course I also had to try their coquito! Every household has their own version of this classic holiday concoction and LF's did not disappoint! Love that their version is egg free. They sell bottles of during the holidays and they offer both a virgin and original (w/rum) version. I happened to be there during The Yards holiday cocktail competition and got to see LF and Violeta compete with the coquito. I'm hoping she won because she was an absolute gem and makes awesome drinks! Ordered the chicken mofongo and loved that they serve it with a side of chicken broth to ensure the dish stays moist. They also have homemade pique (our version of hot sauce- IYKYK) which was so good! I literally could not stop eating this dish! Best mofongo outside of PR- hands down! They were sold out of the flan so I opted for the mousse de parcha (passion fruit mousse). It was so creamy and airy. I'm not a big fan of passionfruit but it was excellent- the slight tartness countered by the sweet whipped cream won me over. Perfect way to end a meal without being too rich or heavy. Service the entire time was excellent! Everyone at LF treated me like a regular and checked in on me. I was situated to see the entire staff interacting with customers and providing outstanding service. As if my experience couldn't get any better, I had already ordered the last alfajore and mantecaditos when Cam sent me home with quesitos since they were closing and make them fresh daily. All were delicious and loved by my coworkers the next day. My first time at LF was during lockdown and they were relatively new and dine-in was not an option. Our meals were ok but I wasn't blown away. On this visit they proved they have worked out their kinks and impressed with the menu. With all the 5 star reviews...here it comes...I really wanted to love this place. PR restaurants are extremely rare to non-existent in the DMV. Thus, I looked forward to trying La Famosa. Well...We got there around 5 p.m. on a Saturday and the place was just about empty. A staff member seated us then announced that we had to scan the QR code on the table to see the menu. My husband tried but that didn't work. And it gets even better! We were expected to place our order using our phone plus use the phone to pay the bill. We told them we don't use our phone to charge anything (I know---we haven't fully cast off the "luddite" ways). Then we were told there was another way to order. We had to go to their take out counter, place our order with a staff member then pay with a credit card. So...that's what we did. When the food came out, they would bring it to us. We started out with the "pastelillo" appetizer. It comes either with meat or vegetables. We chose the veggie one. The description has one thinking it will be all veggies but later we found out it had "impossible meat" in it. I was curious to see if it would be an actual pastelillo as some places (even on the Island) try to pass of empanadas as pastelillos. The order consisted of 2 of them. We bit into it and thought maybe they gave us the meat one but it was the veggie. I have to say it was the best part of the meal. The "impossible meat" tasted just like chorizo. The pastelillo crust was thin but not flaky as a true one. It was crispy which we appreciated. It came with 2 dipping sauces, one was mayo based, the other had a cilantro flavor. We didn't use either one. Pastelillos are meant to be a grab and eat food. Never have we seen any that came with dipping sauce. As for the main courses, weird as it may seem, I've never had mofongo other than to taste someone's dish. There are other things I Iike in PR restaurants so I've put off trying mofongo. I ordered it with chicken. The head chef and owner admits his take isn't traditional. It comes with chicken broth. Despite using it, the food was still dried out with little flavor. My husband got bistec encebollado (steak & onions). He got arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas which costs extra as the default version is arroz con habichuelas). He thought the sauteed onions were the best part of the dish. The steak was thicker than what's typical. He said that arroz con gandules was lacking in flavor. I tried some and agreed with him. If you go here, keep in mind that the dishes aren't typical of PR food. The essence is there but it's not the same. I know these days with many cuisines, chefs tinker with recipes to make them healthier. However, sometimes healthy food be darned---the real thing is tastier. Eating here made us think of a great PR restaurant in Teaneck, NJ, a mom and pop place that puts out fantastic old school style food. Now we want to go there again---LOL but not with winter fast approaching! We were very put off by the whole ordering process here. Who knew that I needed Guava sauce in my life? The seating arrangements are not suited for a portly guy like myself. In fact I'm surprised that I exited the table without the use of Lube and the wait staff pulling me from the very snug space in between bench and table. Ordering is done via phone, and you pay the same way. The food arrives quickly which is always good. I'd like to sit in one of the swings next time. I'd come back here for another jibarito and they do a good job with their cocktails as well. They're strong but not overpowering. The food is good and proficiently seasoned. I like a little more umph to my carné asada in Latin meals but the accompanying pickled onions, garlic, and aioli like pesto sauce coupled with the cheese was a good balance. The mashed plantain was a bit thicker than I'm accustomed to making it a more filling meal.. I also tried the croquetas el bacalao which were light and on a bed of a pretty mild tarter sauce. Went on a Wednesday evening before a soccer game and it was well worth it. I would like to start by saying how much we liked the service and payment setup. There is a QR code on each table and when you sit you scan the QR code not only to see the menu but to also order and pay right away (if you want). My family loved it because when we ordered we decided to pay, so when we were done with our food we didn't have to wait for the check-we left as soon as we finished eating! The QR code is for that specific table, so when your order is entered and ready they will bring it right to the table. I got the pollito frito and the Arroz Con Habichuelas and it was delicious. The chicken is fired without any breading and it was perfectly seasoned! The Arroz Con Habichuelas was so good - my husband said he was going to only have a small bite to try it but ended up eating half of it with me. He also got the Tripleta sandwich and he loved it. Said it was very good. My FIL got a burger and really enjoyed that as well. We also wanted some of their cookies, but they were sold out by the time we got to the restaurant. We shared an order of Bolitas de Queso, a Mallorca breakfast sandwich (El Classico), and their French toast (Tostadas Francesas) - and of course a Mojito and a Medalla to drink. The Bolitas (perfect spheres of gooey cheese, fried and topped with a guava sauce) were on point. The Mallorca sandwich (a brioche sort of bun filled with egg, cheese, bacon, and mayo ketchup) was zestier than I've had before and brought me back to Puerto Rico. The Tostadas Francesas (a piece of bread pudding made with sweet Coquito and ripe plantain and topped with guava sauce and maple mascarpone) was rich and delicious. 10/10 on every dish. Service was quick and friendly. We ordered from our table using a QR code and our meals came quickly, staff taking time to chat with us. The interior was bright and cheerful, but could have used more paintings of Don Quixote. My only suggestion to the owners would be to expand their rum offerings. A nice Don Q anejo? The beans were almost identical to my aunt recipe I would eat often while growing up. Mofongo- I highly recommend especially if your a girl like me who at times contemplate whether I'm Flying to PR for Mofongo. Mine was served with jumbo Shrimp. They offered several options Pastelillos with crab- this appetizer was just ok. It had too many potatoes filled in and less crab meat. Guava mimosa and coconut mojito- a must have! Pastelillo de guayaba- this is pretty much a pastry stuffed with guava. It's served room temperature but I've always enjoyed this desert warmed. The only recommendation I have for this restaurant is a kids menu. My son is very picky and unfortunately no kid friendly options. Luckily there was a pizza shop at the corner. 2 stars. Big disappointment overall. From the time I saw mofongo on FN's Triple D - 7 or 8 years ago, I've been looking forward to trying the dish. Given that there isn't a huge Puerto Rican community in this area and I don't have a desire to fly to Miami at the moment it had been a while so when I saw this restaurant profiled on the news the other day I was excited. Thrilled actually! I was all jazzed and ready to write to y'all about this place and how much I loved mofongo. After looking at the pics and reading most of the reviews I could almost taste the dish before walking into this restaurant. I called ahead first to ask a few questions + find out if they had a dress code or anything and let them know that it was my business partner's birthday. The woman on the phone (seemingly uninspired) told me they had no special consideration for a person's birthday. That should have been my first red flag. I was thinking myself what restaurant doesn't bring you a slice of cake or come and sing to you or SOMETHING on your birthday? This one doesn't apparently. :-/ I meet my business partner there at 1p and I asked the same woman who had answered the phone if we could sit outside and she agrees so we go and sit. Eight or ten minutes go by and nobody comes outside - to offer water or menu suggestions or anything. Nothing. I come back inside to ask for water with lemon and to ask for a server...from the same lady. She comes out and (still uninspiringly), drops off the water, a laminated card explaining their "process" and advises us to scan the QR code that's on the wall a couple feet away. **me and my partner look at each other quizzically** Now, I understand in the era of COVID restaurants have made COVID adjustments, but can I say I can't stand QR codes and dealing with ordering things online while SITTING in a restaurant. To me it devalues the experience and makes it feel like you're in a glorified drive-thru... Which is exactly what happened here. Nobody there to answer questions or suggest menu selections or anything, just me and their online system left to figure it out..so I did. Their system asked whether I wanted shrimp or pork belly with my mofongo.... And I really wanted both but of course their system only allowed me to check one and I couldn't ask anybody any questions so.... Whatever. I ordered the mofongo for me....with shrimp =$18. A whole snapper for my business partner = $32. She had a (juice glass) of wine =$7 and I had a rum cocktail something or other in a pineapple glass for what I think was $12. Grand total = $75 + tax. Their system has the temerity to prepopulate and add minimum 18% tip to the $75, which I proceeded to back out. If you aren't careful and LOOK before pressing confirm it charges you automatically. Thank you very much but I'd like to experience a restaurant before I decide what I'm going to tip you. Sure enough the food comes out and it's mediocre at best. The mofongo is not what I expected and I would have ordered it differently had I had a SERVER to interact with. It was dry and borderline bland. Same with the rice that accompanied the fish. There was supposed to be a garlicky broth served with it to moisten the mofongo according to my research, but it was also flavorless. The shrimp that I ordered to top it were good though... And then again how do you mess up shrimp sauteed in a tomato sauce? I left most of the plantain paste on the plate and basically ate the shrimp. My business partner's fish was good and my pineapple drink was good. I go back in to track the waitress down [again] and she is filling a bakery order of some sort and seems a bit perturbed at this point that I'm asking for water refills. Another gentleman brings out the water and advises that additional refills are available inside at the self-serve machine. Wow. This whole experience feels very SELF-SERVE 'n fast-foodish in totality thus far and that was the cherry on top. The experience may be fast food, but the prices sure as hell aren't. It's don't typically spend $80 on fast food, so something has to give. I won't be returning to this place. Their service is non-existent and the food doesn't compensate for the lack thereof. There was a family of four seated immediately behind us that we overheard sending their entire order back because it wasn't hot. Luckily Jeni's ice cream is next door so we went for ice cream and I left business partner to get change for $20 from LaFamosa and have a discussion with them about their service - while I ran to catch my soon to be expiring meter. I still gave them $10 although the service sucked. One of the previous gentlemen pointed her to a generic tip cup... Which makes sense considering they were all collectively responsible for the poor hospitality. Oh, the interior decor is really nice in the bathrooms are decent as well. The quest for mofongo continues. I can't believe that the version I had this afternoon is the end of the road. read more

My sister and I tried this place. The shrimp Morongo. Big portion, definitely worth sharing. Also tried the croquetas and the octopus salad for appetizers. Both were excellent. I loved the atmosphere, decorations and ordering on the app with QR code was easy enough. Lunch time there's a big rush from the navy yard but totally worth it going a bit early. I tried the Coquitatte (latte size coffee). Personally it was too sweet for me. But you should try it. I'll definitely be back to try more food. read more
