The food was terrific. Out came piping hot fresh cooked tortillas chips. I had the combination plate #1 that had a taco and enchilada, and Spanish rice. I choose the beef taco with real shredded beef! No ground beef here. The red enchilada was the best restaurant enchilada that I ever had, and the refried beans were creamy and delicious! This is our favorite Mexican restaurant....they have a long history here in the valley. We have never had anything bad here....my recommendation is to try the Carne Asada meal, but be prepared it is a lot of food. The Pollo Fundito is another amazing flavor bomb. I really enjoyed the machaca burro enchilada style with green sauce. It was very good and flavorful! However, it does not come with rice and beans, and I thought $4.50 for a side was a bit much! The fundido sauce was not good at all. It was grainy and not very appealing. The chips and salsa were so-so. The chips were hot but very very thin. It just like they were a bit too thin. The salsa was lackluster. It tasted like they use canned tomatoes? It also needed a little more heat. Over all, just okay! Nothing to really write home about. We ordered from Door Dash on Friday evening. It's not the restaurant's fault, but Door Dash isn't very descriptive and doesn't allow for many changes. For example, my son order a steak quesadilla. He didn't want anything except steak and cheese. The menu mentioned pico but didn't say if it was on the side or on the quesadilla. He still ate it. I'm surprised. He's so picky and will usually give his food to me if it has toppings. We both enjoyed the cheese crisp. I think we are from it, at least, three times. I saved the enchiladas for the next day. Family owned which I love but watch your receipt. Extra chips and salsa are cost and the food prices are as high as mexican restaurants who don't charge for chip refills. Walking into the restaurant is walking into a Mexican restaurant like you'd think. Music and ambiance is fun. Owner is very cordial. Salsa is chunky with a little heat. Chips are fresh and non greasy. Mexican pizza was $15 - it looked like I could've made it at home but meat portion was good. Chicken burrito- Good portion of meat but little cheese and again I could make it at home. (Convenience is a yes and no clean up is always very appealing. True. Machaca plate $17 - great dish. Meat portion was big. $4.50 for sides is steep especially with extra chip baskets being $2.50 a hit. 4 stars for the experience but 3 stars in the grand scheme because their competitors are 4 stars and we will choose them before coming here -Although the food was good and the owner was nice. read more

Perhaps I was expecting more from La Fonda. Any restaurant that is celebrating their 55th year in business is something to be very proud of. This is their third day of grand opening at this location. I was told that previously they were housed in Scottsdale and Tempe. Tonight we had good friendly service provided by Marc P, a nice ambiance but just average taste. This will not make you stand out amongst your competitors, in my opinion. The complimentary tortilla chips arrived hot as it had just been cooked fresh out of the oil. Sadly, the salsa was average. The house margaritas were good but the food had me scanning the other tables for salt and pepper shakers. The shredded beef and chicken taco interiors were dry but were greasy on the exterior. The enchilada trio I thought would be a smart choice for sampling their chicken enchilada with fundido sauce, cheese enchilada with green sauce and cubed beef enchilada with red sauce. Well the creamy cheese enchilada along with the vegetables ($3.50 upgrade and it did come piping hot) were the best items on the platter. More spices would assist in bring on the taste! I have found that when I order fajitas, it seems a lot of people pre-cooked their vegetables. Not here. The vegetables were obviously freshly grilled with my steak. To me, that's how fajitas get their unique flavor, and not a lot of places have it. I read reviews about the salsa, and I disagree. It's very good, and just the right heat for this non-native Arizonan. The town I grew up in still doesn't have even a Taco Bell. I'm used to receiving tiny little scoops of guacamole and sour cream, but I got big scoops here, and it's a lunchtime serving. My server, Janet, was charming, and very attentive. I don't have even one complaint. Everything was delicious, properly cooked, and great portions. Even the sopapillas were fabulous! $28.50 for everything Yummy! read more

Ate here for the first time the other day. As usual I tried the carne asada street tacos. They were fantastic. Just the right combo of moist and carmelized steak, with an excellent level of flavor and seasoning. I'll definitely be back for the tacos. I also tried the shredded beef nachos. Those were not good. Not truly bad, because hey they're still nachos, but it was stark the difference in quality between these and the tacos. Flavorless meat, gluey beans. Sour cream was almost dry and solid. We've been customers at La Fonda for decades, going back to their original location on Scottsdale Road. The food and service have always been excellent, so we've followed them to their more recent locations. This one is easy to get to and tucked into a quiet spot in a strip mall. Although it's smaller, we like the big windows and the booths and decor that follow the La Fonda tradition. The chips were hot, light and delicious as always, and the salsa was fresh and well-seasoned; as ever, the refill was free. I enjoyed my usual cheese crisp with extra tomatoes and green onions (a modest $2.00 each), along with a bowl of guacamole fresco. My husband had his usual machaca burro enchilada style with a side (3.25) of beans, along with a frosty margarita. To top off a delightful lunch, we got their flan to take out. I've tasted a few flans over the years, and this one reminded us of creme brulee. It will be part of our orders from here on out. As always, everything at this new incarnation of La Fonda is great and we will be back again and again. Highly recommended. read more

My family and friends have been coming to LaFondas for decades, and I can't believe I've never written a review! This is the restaurant by which I judge all other Mexican food restaurants. First, they have the creamiest refried beans. They are vegetarian- no lard - and still flavorful and yummy. The best salsa and hot sauce. We always get some to go. The chips are freshly fried and not greasy. I'm not a big Spanish rice fan, but my husband loves theirs! This is also the only restaurant that serves shredded beef tacos the way my husband likes them. Crisp, not greasy, shredded beef moist but not wet. Great ratio of meat to toppings. Filling! They have all the classics, but are willing to customize. My sisters favorite - a burrito half-bean, half- green chili. Another family favorite - a simple cheese crisp with strips of roasted green chili. Today, I had another favorite- the Pollo Fundido burrito- full of yummy chicken, moist and full of flavor. And the sauce - just enough zip to start your nose running. Great bar - great service. Super accommodating to large parties. I have been eating at La Fonda since they were off Curry Road in Tempe. Their new location in Chandler is a little tricky to see as one approaches from the west. The space seems smaller than the other two previous Tempe locations. The service was prompt and attentive. The salsa and chips were good as they always have been. This place was clean and the service was good. The food was mediocre at best. I had a cheese enchilada and the tortilla was hard and the cheese inside wasn't melted all the way. My husband had the steak quesadilla and he said it was good. I found the price to be expensive, more than other Mexican restaurants we go to which is disappointing considering the quality of food. This was my first time going to La Fonda, I called ahead of time to ask if they had a bar they said no, but they did sell drinks. I still went to give it a chance and an opportunity because it's new to Chandler. I ordered a passionfruit. Margarita, it was absolutely way too sweet. I even tried to dilute it with water and still didn't help the taste. I ordered two item combo with a shredded beef taco and an enchilada with cube of beef carne inside. I took one bite of the taco and the shredded beef inside was so dry and flavorless. The beef enchilada with half red and half green sauce was wonderful, the rice and beans were great . Oh, they also dropped off chips and salsa when I arrived at the table. The chips were too oily to the point of sogginess. My server was very sweet and she asked me if I liked my margarita and I told her what my concern was with it. She did offer to take it off the bill however I chose not to and just paid for the entire meal, even if I wasn't thrilled by it. Unfortunately, I would not be going to this restaurant. read more

Three cousins flew in from Ohio to surprise their cousins in Chandler Arizona. The local cousins were taken to La Fonda not aware of what was to happen. We entered the restaurant and stood right inside the door as they looked at us in shock. Was it really people we knew? What is going on? We yelled surprise and began to all celebrate our reunited family. Janaye was our waitress as was AWESOME! She was very patient with our loud group and came back often to check on us. We ordered food 1 hour before close and it was fantastic. The chips were so warm from the oven and the salsa was so flavorful. Margaritas were flowing and tasted so refreshing.
