Texas transplant here, always looking for great Mexican food in the area and found it at La Fondita. A nice little hole in the wall in old town Midvale, it looks pretty unassuming. The flautas were good, a tiny bit bland, but generously stuffed with chicken and super crispy. A little hot sauce fixed them right up and made them shine. However, the star of the show was the daily special: their green mole. I'd never had green mole before and this was amazing. Technically my hub's dish, but he let me try it and we were both wowed. Spicy but not so hot that your face melts, with deep yet homey flavors that make you feel like you're nestled in grandma's kitchen. We'll definitely be back.

Thanks to Surfi G. For her great review as I otherwise never would have known of La Fondita (though I've driven past it many times!). Even after I was aware of its existence, it sort of blends into the strip of adjoining businesses in that bitty downtown Midvale area, but then right as you pass it pops out, so just keep watch! Parking is limited to the street, though this isn't a very busy area, so you should be alright. Inside, the walls are painted flamboyant colors, and two TVs blast Spanish language channels. We stood awkwardly at the front for a minute before seating ourselves. A server immediately dropped off menus, so I guess that's the way to do it! The menus are all in Spanish, maybe 1/3 has an English translation below, but otherwise you're on your own. It was kind of fun, though, and you might be surprised by how many words you already know. I did some searching on my phone and learned about many new (to me) dishes. They offer lots of seafood, lots of Mexican restaurant standards, and some lesser known (maybe more traditional?) foods, too. We were first served complimentary tortilla chips plus two salsas in squeezy bottles. My favorite was a green avocado based variety, the other was richer, and almost smoky. We picked out our lunch, and orders arrived about ten minutes after. I had the carne a la tampiqueña. The meat is very thin steak, seasoned well, and though also cooked nearly too well, it remained appreciably juicy, if a smidge tough (not all their fault, that cut is stringy). The enchiladas were formed of corn tortillas, generously filled with chicken and spicy red sauce, topped by shredded lettuce, cotija cheese, and crema. Yum! I requested additional lettuce, and our server was happy to oblige. The refried beans were luscious and creamy, and could only have been improved by some melty cheese. I didn't love the rice, though admittedly I'm not a huge fan of that super soft Mexican style. My husband had the fajitas, and as they are his go-to order he's near an expert connoisseur. He said La Fondita's were very good, better than most, and the price was impressive at $11 when most restaurants charge $15-$20 for a poorer version. La Fondita has dedicated a great deal of their menu (and for that matter, decor and signage), to horchata, smoothies, agua, and myriad other fruity drinks. For the full experience we really should have ordered one, and they sure sounded good, we just weren't in the mood. Next time, for sure!

Sauce with chips. I love it more than salsa

La Fondita certainly needs more Yelp love and business. It's an excellent restaurant buried in the sea of mediocrity that surrounds downtown Midvale. I'm glad I came. It was a Sunday lunch time. The place was mostly empty, but there were a few other having lunch. I was here with my son. The only thing missing for me was some beer, but that's not a surprise. It's so hard for small places to justify the cost and training of the licenses just to serve a beer. Big Fail Utah government. No blame here. The horchata was delicious to make up for it. We got some chips and sauce after ordering. They were a bit of a surprise. It's sauces in bottles, not salsa. There's no plate to hold things. Then, I squirted a little sauce on a chip. It had body, so I could put a decent amount on it. The red sauce was the spicier of the two. It's at a level many people I know would not like it. The green sauce less spicy. OTOH, they both taste good, and you can just put a dot on the chip where I coated the whole thing. The son got chicken enchiladas with mole. It was excellent. I'm glad he let me taste some. It didn't have the extra sugar so many places put in a dish like this. I had a shrimp soup. It was fresh and filling with the delicious flour tortillas. These tortillas didn't come from the local megamart. The spice was a solid hit, but not so much it detracted from the flavor. I was happy. We got a flan to share for dessert. It was way too dense, even though the flavor and caramel sauce were good.

This might be the new Red Iguana. Food homemade. Nice and hot. It's literally a great little hole in the wall restaurant. And the service is sweet and humble. You can tell that they are proud of what they serve. They have all the classic Mexican food. The Chile relleno was great! I wish there were two on the plate. And I loved their cheese enchiladas in their green mole sauce. They do serve Mexican Coca Cola and a nice Horchata. I think this is the only best Mexican restaurant in Murray and Midvale area.

I ordered the fish tacos and a cucumber lemonade, and both were outstanding. The lemonade was incredibly refreshing and hit the spot perfectly. The fish tacos were crispy, flavorful, and served with several different condiments that allowed you to customize each bite and add even more flavor. The chips and salsa were also fresh and delicious. One thing to note is that the parking lot is small and was completely packed when we arrived on a busy Saturday afternoon. However, we were still able to find parking and get a table surprisingly fast despite the crowd. Overall, the food, service, and atmosphere made for a great experience. I will definitely be coming back and highly recommend giving this place a try!

They start you off with chips and salsa, which is always appreciated. Just know that the first basket is complimentary and any additional baskets come with a charge. Of everything we tried, the Cheesy Pastor Tacos were the clear standout. The birria, asada, and chorizo were all good, but the pastor tacos stole the show. Next time I'll probably skip the variety and just order those. The only thing that caught us off guard was the seating policy. They wouldn't seat our table until everyone in the party had arrived, even though the people we were waiting for were literally pulling into the parking lot. It wasn't a huge issue, but it did feel a little unnecessary and inconvenient. Overall, the food was excellent, the drinks were refreshing, and the experience was a good one. I'll definitely be back, especially for the Cheesy Pastor Tacos.

The restaurant has limited parking! Tiny! Parking is a joke! There is maybe 6-7 parking spaces on the east side. Maybe 2-3 at the back of the building, which is one way. It limits the ability to drive around the back of the building. There are two parking spaces on the west side of the building. I have seen cars get totally stuck, people yelling and getting upset. If you have a large vehicle, I would not even try to drive around the building. I would drive south of the restaurant and park at the whitmore library's parking lot, and walk over. Service is okay. Ordering is cramped, and if there's a line you're standing at the back of the restaurant right next to people sitting eating. It's uncomfortable. During the summer there is seating inside and outside, but during high times you have to wait for a table! During the winter there are 12 tables, most of which are room for 2 people, four tables for 4 people, 5 if you can fit. This restaurant is SO popular, they really need to move to a larger building! One with plenty of parking and more seating. I love their food so much I would go once a week if there was more seating and parking, otherwise it's just too stressful!

Unfortunately I kind of wish I didn't. We tried the fish tacos, shrimp tacos, Carne Adovada Burrito, nachos with shredded beef, and horchata. The dish with the most flavor was the nachos. I'd give that dish a 4. The horchata was pretty good too. Definitely above average horchata. But the rest of the dishes didn't have enough flavor, even after adding salsa from their salsa bar. This was pretty disappointing and we wished we had picked a different restaurant for lunch.
