OK im going to reference some of my other reviews, as I said before I was raised in very Latin household and have spent a considerable amount of time in Mexico. With that being said never had Billygoat meat so I was intrigued by a place who's name was "the billy goat" of course I got some billy goat meat tacos and I will say they are GREAT! The entrance is kind of intimidating but the food is great. I heard about El Cabrito the first week I moved to SLC from people who should know a good Mexican restaurant. Subsequently, other people were shocked I would consider driving to that neighborhood. I shouldn't listen to most people in SLC about food. El Cabrito was perfectly safe, the food was authentically good, and service in Spanish was helpful. I don't speak Spanish, and as I organically slipped into French, she just laughed. I ate a wonderful burrito, maybe the best I ever had. The restaurant was full, and I found the last parking space in the lot. By the time I finished, there was a huge line at the take out counter. Oh, by the way, I was the only gringo in El Cabrito. This may be the most authentic Mexican restaurant I have ever experienced; that includes the restaurants I ate at in the Condesa, Polanco and Roma neighborhoods in Mexico City. read more

I'm sure locals will agree, this establishment makes some fantastic tacos. They are later than you're used to and a bit more expensive, but dang they are addicting! The tortillas are hand made and have a unique homestyle taste along with the great meat. I have never ordered here myself. It has always been a friend or family member that picks it up, so I can't comment on the interior, but they are always consistent with their menu. I adore this. Goat is a tougher meat which takes hours to cook in order to be tender and these guys do a fantastic job of that. These guys also add plenty of flavor to their food. Not to mention the portions are enormous! I ordered a sope Or should I say two of them but I think one would've been enough wowsers! So far everything I've tasted is good (barbacoa, carnitas(mixed) and carné asada) the service is great and they keep the place clean. For those reasons I recommend this place. The tortilla was the size of a regular size dinner plate. They filled it with carne asada. The carne was very flavorful. The handmade corn tortilla was so delicious, so authentic. It was exactly what you'd have in Mexico. I can't explain well enough how good it was. Others in my group had a simple bean and cheese taco. It immediately brought me back to a kid eating my grandmothers b/c tacos as treats. Same great flavor. There are so many Mexican places where I live but none have or make tortillas by hand that I've come across. This place is small but was packed for lunch. The clientele were all hard working Latinos. The restaurant knowing how hungry these folks were serve huge portions. I saw some big dudes there who left without finishing all their food. Not because the food wasn't good but because they were fed to their content. My sister ordered a chicken burrito but was soon told they ran out of chicken...at 12:30 PM! We weren't mad at all...we could see the place was packed and they were taking phone order after order. So good they run out of food. There were four in our party and we had 3 carne asada tacos, one b/c taco, a tostada and a b/c burrito, three drinks for less than 25 dollars. This is a gem! This is hands down the best authentic Mexican restaurant in Salt Lake City. The owners are from Morelos in Mexico. As you sit down they give you fresh cilantro, onions, red/green salsa, cream and toasted chiles de arbol. I had the red menudo that comes with hand made tortillas. The menudo was delicious and not greasy. The meat was tender clean and delicious. My husband got the Consome, that has goat meat and also comes with hand made tortillas. The flavor is just how he remembers from Mexico. My son had the carne asada quesadilla that was made with a hand made tortilla and was deep fried. He ate the whole thing. I'm from L.A. and I know good, authentic Mexican food. This is the best Mexican food in SLC in my opinion. Do not walk to El Cabrito, RUN! I ordered the 3 Enchiladas with Mole. The carne asada one was OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! I also loved the barbequed goat too. It was very juicy and tender. The chicken one was pretty good too. We also had a wonderful bowl of soup which was very flavorful. The service was very friendly, helpful and very quick. Everyone there appeared to be Mexican and was speaking Spanish, which is a very good sign if you want authentic Mexican food. The restaurant is nothing to look at from the outside, but this hole-in-the-wall is a real find. Believe me, if you want good, flavorful, affordable Mexican food, this is the place to go. It's certainly not the prettiest or most elegant restaurant you'll encounter, but tucked away in the Rose Park neighborhood along 1000 N, you'll find an authentic Mexican gem, El Cabrito. Their specialty is definitely goat barbacoa, at which they succeed with stunning skill! Their "taco" is your best opening gateway, but don't think this is an ordinary taco. El Cabrito's version of a taco is roughly 6 inches in diameter, stuffed to the gills with meat. All of their tortillas are freshly made on the plancha. You'll get a selection of garnishes, including diced raw onion and chopped cilantro and a medley of homemade sauces (salsa roja, salsa verde and a Mexican crema). For $2.50!!! If tacos, tortas and burritos don't get you excited, try their selection of combination dinners and soups, including a very decent rendition of menudo, a spicy tomato-based broth swimming with tripe chunks. No alcohol, but they have a nice selection of Mexican sodas and juices. Service is friendly, but some of the staff (understandably) speak little English. Don't let this discourage you from going---a little pointing on the menu and your translation issues are typically solved! Prices are ridiculously cheap, particularly considering the massive portions. read more

I spent a lot of time with Hispanics in North Carolina and Virginia on an LDS church mission, and I have to say this is the closest to the amazing food they would cook for me in their own homes. The tacos were gigantic and cheap, too! I got a carnitas and a carne asada taco. Fresh handmade corn tortillas and bowls of onion, cilantro, and limes to put on your food. I loved the salsas and crema they had on the table as well. I will be back and I want to try the carnitas. The menu has tons of great choices. Sopes, enchiladas, tortas, gorditas, pozole, tacos, menudo, carnitas, carne asada.... This is the real deal. It's a little hole in the wall, which for me is a sign that it's gonna be good. When I walked in and saw all the local Spanish people eating here, I knew this place would not disappoint. The restaurant itself is not fancy or huge. There's enough sitting space for about 50 people at a time. But they do take out, and service was pretty fast. I ordered the chicken enchiladas and was surprised at the portion sizes! They are huge! I could've split this with someone. I took the leftovers home. Their corn tortillas are out of this world! They make them fresh and use them in all their recipes. They are big! They will also give you 3 different sauces and limes. The red sauce is very spicy and the white is a mayo and garlic mix. My meal came with a side of beans and rice. I've been three times. The first time I got carne asada tacos. They were quite good. The second time I got an enchilada plate. It was excellent. The third time I got a carne asada quesadilla. It was horrible. The prices are very reasonable. Parking is terrible. The main parking lot is usually full and is too small anyway. You can park on the east side of the place but for some reason people park in chaotic fashion there and you worry about somebody parking their car behind yours snd locking you in. read more

I have been on a mission to try as many authentic Mexican restaurants in the SLC area, and I have a friend who is on the same mission. We found El Cabrito and got what my family would call the "poo poo platter". We got the pork enchiladas with salsa verde, carnitas and one other item that I can't remember or pronounce. Everything was hot, delicious and you could tell the salsas and tortillas were all homemade. It is a bit off the beaten path, and the parking leaves something to be desired, but it is worth it.
