Today I went to eat at this restaurant because it is the best place to eat Mexico City style. I noticed management changed and it is for the better. The first thing I noticed is that it has very well-kept and clean restrooms. In addition, the menu has the same variety of Chilango dishes and with a flavor that makes you feel as if you were in CDMX. I also want to emphasize the spectacular attention they give to the diner and outstanding the impeccable service of Anthony, he is always attentive to the service and that nothing is missing in the dining area and makes everyone who comes to eat at this place feel welcome. Tucked away in the back of a sad strip mall. This place is a bit run down but they keep it clean. Despite the location it is a popular place because of the fruit drinks. They are big and made with fresh fruits blended like a smoothie. Delicious!!! The menu has some unique items and the food is crafted differently than what I was expecting. Came here today with my kids. Was looking forward to authentic Mexican dish. I ordered the quesadilla with beans and rice for my kids and the green chili enchiladas for myself. Sadly, the beans were watery without flavor. The rice was dry and stale. The enchiladas were no good. The salsa tasted like the green salsa thats sold at Walmart in the herdez bottles. The food was cold and the tortillas were way too thick and the meat was low quality. The presentation was nonexistent. Redoing the math I do believe I was overcharged by $10-$12. I asked for a receipt but the receipt was not itemized and doing the math all this should've cost me no more than $40 including tax. I was charged $52 for the above plus 2 sprites and horchata. The math ain't mathin. Bathroom was very dirty and no toilet paper. Horchata was good but after seeing the bathroom and my overall experience I decided to leave it with the rest of the food. Wish I could say otherwise, but I definitely won't be dining here ever again. I'm honesty doubting that any of the review with above 3 stars are real. I would have rather gone to racheritos. Wanted to mix it up in our Mexican restaurant go-to's and took our family here for dinner for a first. I had the chili rellenos, my husband had carne asada and our kids got chicken enchiladas-one with red sauce and the other with green sauce. The chili relleno was flavorful and very good, the enchiladas with green sauce were good but no one cared for the enchiladas with the red sauce. The red sauce seemed to have a lot of Tabasco sauce in it and it was finished with a mozzarella cheese which made it look more like a lasagna slice at first glance. Service was great and the staff very friendly and accommodating. They don't have fountain drinks, only bottles or canned drinks as well as agua de fruta natural, which we tried the pineapple and mango and both were very good. read more

I had high hopes, ordered the chilaquiles crispy with everything. Came out soggy, the waitress couldn't really understand what I was saying to her. So I just ate it. It looks like a lot of food but the beans were paper thin layer. The sauce was ok, similar to a taco stand. The beef was obviously low grade beef with lots of gristle and fat. Overall they have a great idea but need to put emphasis on quality and quantity. For two people I was out the door at $32 and felt ripped off. Especially considering the location of the restaurant is high crime and run down. I kept looking out the window to make sure my car was still there. My wife and I didn't fee craving Mexican Food, and although we often make the trip to Red Iguana to get our "fix", we decided to take a chance on this hole in the wall that is closer to our home, and we were pleasantly surprised. My first impression on walking into the restaurant was that it was authentic, but not gimmicky. Most of the seating consisted of 90's style benches with a few pictures/decorations on the wall. There were Hispanic families enjoying their meals all around us, with a soccer game quietly playing on a tv near the register. We were greeted by a friendly woman in an apron, and told to grab a seat wherever we liked. Our waitress was also friendly and professional. Later I asked the gentleman at the register if it was a family run restaurant and he said that it was. The biggest shocker and only negative (but oddly enough, it's a positive, too) is that there were no chips and salsa set before us when we sat down. I asked the waitress for some and she said they didn't have any (I don't know if she meant they had run out or just didn't offer complimentary chips and salsa) but then she told us to hold on a minute and quickly returned with what were obviously store bought tortilla chips and red chili sauce (for like a burrito). Their willingness to accommodate our request was impressive. We both ordered a Carne Asada Burrito which were packed with flavor. The rice and beans were fantastic, as was the Asada, which had very little gristle. The burritos came with both red and green sauce, which were quite tasty. Around 10:30 am I knew that I NEEDED chilaquiles so I looked up the closest Mexican food place and ordered them. I always have to get a watermelon or cantaloupe agua fresca, and their chilaquiles are one of my all time favorite dishes. You can order them several ways, but I go with salsa verde, crispy chips, carne asada, and an over medium egg. They top it all with crema, and I always have to add some of their fresh salsa and lot of lime. It's insanely amazing!!! They have massive quesadillas, and the barbacoa tacos are on point as well. Definitely a fan. Don't expect much in the way of decor or even comfort. Los Machetes delivers in what is truly important: Service, good food, value. A good lunch option if you happen to be in the area, stop by for a quick bite. I'm not an expert in Mexican Cuisine, but I have spent a good deal of time in Mexico and US Cities with large Mexican communities, so, for what it's worth, IMHO, this place is pretty authentic. This place IS as close as you're going to get to Mexico City style food in Utah. The quesadillas de huitlacoche are EVERYTHING. Pambazos to die for!But my favorite thing to do is go in on a Sunday morning get my cafe de olla (reminds me of my grandma) with an order of extremely drenched chilaquiles with sunny side up eggs! I had it on the taco, tasted like homemade corn tortilla, nice size for the very reasonable price of $1.99. We also had the Chicken Tinga and Sencillo Sopes. The best I can say is that the horchata was good, and you can see them cooking your food in the back. The food at Los Machetes does not disappointed. The food selection is authentic Mexican-style food. During our visit we had the tamales, tacos de barbacoa, chilaquiles, and torta. The items are affordable and given in a timely matter. For the chilaquiles rojos you can ask for the level of "hotness" (spicy) and if you want your tortillas to be crunchy or soggy. You can also order an egg on top or shredded meat. I asked for my egg to be over hard. Most people have their egg runny (I'm not a fan). I like my chilaquiles not too spicy and crunchy. When my order arrived, they were exactly how I wanted them. The plate was served with rice and beans. It was a decent amount. I have been to Los Machetes twice. The first time, I ordered the enchiladas to see if my wife would enjoy this restaurant. The enchiladas were good, but not what my wife would like, so the next time I went, I ordered something that sounded good to me--the smothered burrito. It was a huge burrito that was smothered in great tasting chili verde. I loved it. I highly recommend this item. I thought that the service was pretty relaxed and slow, so I'd say don't expect to be able to complete a half hour lunch at this place and make it back to work.
