The family and I went at open on a Sunday. It was a gorgeous day so we sat outside which was perfect as thy have a small playground that our youngest loved. The yard was decorated with metal sculptures, there was a huge screen that they use for sports and Friday movie nights, and lots of outdoor seating. Francisco was very attentive to us. He explained that this is their second location (the first is at the Pearl and that one focuses on traditionally Southern Mexican food- mostly seafood). This location focuses on traditional, northern Mexican food with smoked meats and moles. They are hoping to open a 3rd location at La Villita that will focus on food from central Mexico. All I know is, we plan to visit each one and frequently! The food was incredible. My husband got the El Vaquero plate that had pork ribs and longaniza and chorizo verde sausages. You could taste the mesquite smoke and it was delicious! We also tried the carne asada tacos, al pastor tacos, and the Baja shrimp tacos. Each one was amazing. The meats are all so flavorful. The rice and charro beans are equally as good. I also had a house margarita that was refreshing. Overall, this place is excellent. I don't eat out often so when I do it's a special occasion, I've been to this location twice and my expectations were exceeded both times. On my first trip, the manager introduced himself, asked about our food and took time to explain that each La Gloria has a different culinary style based on the different regions of Mexico. This location is all about fire cooked meat so the prices may seem a little high, but once you taste the food you know it's fairly priced. They make their own tortillas and every ingredient from meat to garnish is well thought out and artisan crafted. And goes for their cocktails as well. On top of exceptional service from our host server and even the manager, the ambiance and decorations set an open welcoming vibe rooted in culture. I went here for brunch with some friends. Its a cool Mexican restaurant with a whimsical patio play area for kids and kid and those easily amused such as myself. It was a rainy day and we were the first ones in. We were quickly seated by the waitress. The owner ( a striking resemblance to Richard Boone from have gun will travel) told us about the grill/smoking set up. I went with the pork adobo plate. It comes with charro beans. I am not typically a fan of pinto, tho charro beans can be more flavorful. Theirs are good here. The adobo pork was delicious with right amount of smoke. I did ask for a sweet tea and was served a regular iced tea, there was no sweetener offered. looking at the menu, sweet teas is not listed, I wish they had stated this. read more

I was looking for a restaurant where I can host a birthday party for myself. I wanted something easy where I didn't have to do a lot of work. Where we could just show up and have people come and go, order food or drinks, and have a stress free time. I called three different places and they all had these crazy requirements. One had a $300 room reservation fee. Another one had a requirement that everyone must order food but no way to really enforce it. They were stressing the work that it would cause their wait staff. I would tell them that I would tip and make sure that all the tabs were covered but I couldn't guarantee that everybody wanted to order food. I tried two of Johnny Hernandez's restaurants. And one actually has closed down, la Fruteria. Casa Hernan never returned my calls or the email. I had not been here before but I figured it's in my neighborhood at Brooks City Base. I didn't have to drive far and parking was accessible and free. So I called La Gloria and the woman who answered said yes. She said Thursdays are not busy so we can have you use our separate room. There is no food or drink minimum requirement. So I booked it and then reconfirmed. It seemed almost too easy but I said let's just go with it because I knew at least the decor was going to be festive. I arrive and some of my guests were already seated ordering their drinks. The room is really beautiful with wood panels. They had a long table ready for me that seated 20 people plus a few four tops next to that. I wasn't sure how many people were going to show up but I probably had about 30. We ordered appetizers and drinks. The machito has a lot of food. Most of us ordered plates. All the plates are very well served. Everyone was able to grab a bite from the large amount of food. The bacon wrapped shrimp was especially delicious. Even the chicken was very flavorful. We all had such a great time. We also got to play Loteria and get up and move around. We were not stuck bumping into each other trying to get in and out of our seats. We used one table for all the gifts. We probably could've danced to the festive music that was playing in the speakers. I am an event planner but this night I did not want to be in work mode. I was able to show up looking cute, relax and enjoy my guests. Best of all, one of my guests surprised us by paying for the entire tab. Staff was ready to issue separate checks. I made sure to check in with our waitress to make sure they were tipped properly and they were. I highly recommend having your next gathering at La Gloria Brooks! Thank you to all the staff. I forget to not expect tex-mex when I eat here. I saw chili con carne enchiladas, and was expecting the yellow cheese. It's Oaxaca and so good, and drizzled with crema. My free appetizer was crunchy tortilla chips and dark roasted salsa. The enchiladas come with refried beans and rice. Refried beans weren't runny. I recommend the La Catrina margarita which has bits of apple and pineapple. Everything on the menu is about $15-18 so not cheap, but well worth it. read more

We stopped in because we saw the El Machito sign out front. It turns out this specific La Gloria restaurant merged with the old El Machito restaurant (formerly at Quarry Market), which we absolutely loved back in the day when it was open. We were very glad we found this place. We ate fantastic food and had delicious drinks. There was a wonderful outdoor space with a play space for kids and huge outdoor screen to watch games. So my overall experience at La Gloria was good. The service from every person working was hands down excellent and warm. The shrimp tacos with sides of charro beans and rice were delicious. I will say that we came for the margaritas voted best in town, but the margarita was just ok. It didn't seem to have a good balance between the flavors and the alcohol, and with it being as strong as it was, I could only have one. Of note to me, the menu seemed to be pretty small with limited options for dinner. We ate outside and the patio is beautiful with the rustic Mexican decor. Overall, I would think about coming here again, especially given the many options for Mexican food and margaritas in town. read more

Great place to have some drinks and let the kids enjoy the outdoors- weather permitting of course. The tacos were just perfect servings and the rice and beans were delicious and perfect portions! They were made to focus on the main dish and not just large servings of rice/beans like other Mexican restaurants. Updating here to say that the grilled menu remains on the menu and is just incredible. This time, my husband tried the Carne Asada, and I had the Shrimp and Chorizo. Both blew us away. This is officially the better La Gloria location. The menu is a hybrid of the Pearl La Gloria and the formerly amazing but now closed El Machito. The atmosphere is even better than the one on the Riverwalk, thanks to the very classy and beautiful folk art everywhere and the gorgeous live oak trees that they maintain on the property. The outdoor seating is so peaceful, but it's also gorgeous inside. The staff is so friendly and attentive. The coconut mojitos are my favorite! The fresh tortilla chips are a beautiful touch and not at all greasy. Great homemade tortillas. I can tell they use a special corn for the corn ones. Their salsa is understated but addictive. I love it here! They have made improvements since it first opened. It now has an outdoor screen and kids playground. The atmosphere is great and outdoor seating is so much better than the Pearl location. I will say it's not very crowded but I like that! Lol This place does not get enough credit! The food is always good and the drinks are strong. The staff and managers are very friendly and accommodating. I even had my daughter's graduation lunch here and they had everything set up for when we arrive no waiting required! I love hanging out here! read more

The service was friendly and helpful. The young lady knew the menu and had really good recommendations. The drink menu offered a really nice selection and not overpriced. The only negative was the rice and charro beans could have been hotter in temperature. The food was not cold but some consideration could be given with how cool the restaurant was. Food very different for any Mexican dish I've tasted. I chose cheese enchiladas and they were not the usual cheese enchiladas.

I visited La Gloria Brooks with my family recently, and unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. My son ordered tacos al pastor, but they were barely filled with meat, and the pineapple tasted old and oddly fishy. The lemonade was also stale, like it had been sitting around for too long. To make matters worse, our waitress misheard us and for my order brought out tacos asadas, which looked so unappetizing and I had to correct the order. However, we never received the corrected tacos al pastor. our whole party had finished eating and I was still waiting for my order, we just decided to cancel the order. Honestly, I'm glad we did, because my son didn't even finish his tacos (they were that bad). I tasted them, and the ingredients didn't seem fresh at all. The only saving grace? Their chips and salsa were great and the ambiance is beautiful. Unfortunately, that's not enough to make up for the rest of the experience. Definitely won't be returning. Sad to say that Chef Johnny Hernandez is valuing quantity of restaurants over quality. read more

It is recommended to sit outdoors where there is live music and a beautiful setting. Complimentary house made chips & salsa arrived quickly. The food is pricey for being traditional tex-mex food, but it is tasty and well seasoned. Try their ceviche verde, its pretty good! ! I am not a big fan of the LA Gloria at the Pearl, but really enjoyed this one. It just opened and the space is beautiful. So many instragramable picture opportunities. The decor inside and around it is great. The inside is fairly small though. They have a nice patio that is not street facing and were setting up for live music when we left. The restaurant was very clean and our waitress was very friendly and attentive. We started with a mangonada margarita and a coconut mojito. They were both great. Perfect amounts of liquor. They had complimentary chips. I appreciate this change from the chips we had to pay for at the Pearl location (maybe they have changed that too it's been a few years since I have been to that one). We started with queso fundido. I am not sure what type of cheese it was, but it was a nice change from typical tex med queso flameado which is so greasy. This one got crispy around the edges and I pull off some crispy parts to eat and they were so tasty and not a drop of grease left in the bowl. I liked it better with the chips than the corn tortillas it came with. The corn tortillas were not good. Probably the worst thing we tasted there. To eat we shared the arachera molcajete. To our surprise it came in a bowl and not a molcajete and we got flour tortillas which were way better than the corn but not amazing. Acceptable though. It didn't come with any sides which I thought was kinda cheap since it was like $28. It was good and lots of meat, we couldn't finish it and were very full. We would probably get something else as a main next time though. Overall, a pleasant and slightly pricy experience. We will add it to our rotation and are glad for new restaurants on the south side! read more

I'm not sure if it was us or if people are really paying for this overpriced warm up Tex mex. The tortillas were not homemade and hard, the waitress completely forgot about us after the appetizer, besides the playground they have really nothing to offer for kids. The outside seating is nice however the stump tree seats takes a toll on your body after a while. I wouldn't come here again nor would I recommend to anyone. read more
