We had a lovely lunch with a neighbor and I can't recommend this place enough. I did have it once before but for take out and dining in a better experience. It was nicely decorated with Halloween/fall decor and set the mood nicely with the calming colors. We were greeted with verbal acknowledgment and our server kept our drinks topped off and checked on us often. Fresh hot tortillas completed our green chile cheese enchiladas and taco with refried beans and rice. No one left with a to go box! read more

Let me start by saying as a kid, this was my late grandmothers favorite restaurant (pre-fire). We went back this weekend, so excited to go back to one of my families old go-to's and it was just awful. The new location is right next door to the old. We ordered pancakes, the chiliquile plate and the cowboy breakfast. Very disappointing. The beans tasted old and were very dry. The pancakes were hard, like something was off with the batter plus overcooked. My daughter (who loves pancakes) wouldn't even eat them. We returned two plates because they were so bad. I ordered a sausage guisada taco which was given to another person at our table in error. They did bring me a fresh one but the waitress went over to the other guest and asked them to return the taco per the lady at the register. No big deal but I just thought it was in bad taste. Overall, not a great experience and nothing like it used to be back in the old days. We won't be going back. Also, get ready for a 20% tip for not so great service for tables of 5 or more....ridiculous. read more

This San Antonio restaurant had it all! Great food, service was attentive & informative when we had questions- in one word - superb serving ice, and cozy family party vibe for ambience! My Mom and Tias had the pleasure of eating our lunch at Piedras Negras De Noche for lunch. The daily specials that day were Fideo (soupy dish w noodles in a meat/tomato broth and bits of beef or pork) or Pork Spare Ribs. All these dishes are served with flour tortillas made in house. House made tortillas are a staple in San Antonio Mexican restaurants. Mom , my Tia and I ordered the Fideo . We dug into our bowl of Fideo and slurped up the yummy broth, Fideo noodles and bits of beef with warm flour tortillas . Yum! My other Tia ordered the ribs. Pork Spare Ribs were tender, juicy and flavorful! . She shared a rib with me and eyes rolled back on my head from yummy overload. I look forward to my next visit to San Antonio and another great meal at Piedras Negras De Noche ! Piedras Negras de noche is such a great bang for your buck! I got the Laredo plate. Honestly their cheese enchiladas were mid, but their puffy taco was soooooo good!!! When I go back, I'm gonna get a crispy taco plate instead! The breakfast tacos were also pretty good. Also, their coffee isn't fancy, but it hits the spot just right. Simply inedible food. I sent everything back. I am not that picky of an eater, honestly, but this is simply not respectable Mexican food. I ordered 1 red cheese enchilada, 1 red beef enchilada, and one carne guisada taco in a flour tortilla, all a la carte. The enchiladas were red corn tortillas smothered in what tasted like weak, bland sauce out of the can, and the cheese wasn't cheese at all... it was clearly a "cheese product" similar to Velveeta, adding more BLAH to the already awfully dull dish. The carne guisada taco was small beef cubes mixed with some type of canned chili... it looked like dog food, and there was nothing interesting or exciting about it at all. Just chunky beef in an unappetizing gooey sauce. I was very grateful that our waitress was attentive and gave excellent service, so I will not knock the restaurant for their staff because she was great. I will NOT be back, and regrettably I don't recommend this place with the recipes they currently serve. I hope that they review and revise their menu because the place is cute and employs great folks, but the food is terrible. read more

The Acapulco chicken is a dish I love from here that goes along with my low carb diet (I get double frijoles), the salsa verde is savory and the chicken is grilled with piña. On a cheat day I have gotten their guisado de res, this guisado reminds me a lot of my grandmothers guisado from Coahuila, Mexico!!!! This restaurant is an old favorite of mine, but I haven't been able to visit for many years. To my surprise it has been completely remodeled, with additional downstairs seating, and with the front door even being relocated to the other side of the building. It is newer and cleaner but still hasn't lost its neighborhood family feel. And it still has plenty of free parking! The food remains the real reason to visit: they still have super-fresh, delicious salsa, but sadly it's delivered in a minuscule cup that you can barely get a chip into! Yep, gotta ask for a bigger bowl for THIS salsa fan. Unfortunately the chips are now of the purchased variety instead of the homemade, fresh-cut-and-fried type that I loved so much. Their menu is still extensive, from every breakfast food imaginable to fried shrimp, with all matter of tacos, parrilladas, and enchiladas in between. I am a fan of their puffy tacos. While not as puffy as some, the corn tortillas are still hearty and filled with shredded, stewed chicken (my choice) or ground beef (still can't go wrong there). I also added a cheese enchilada with ranchero sauce, and it had the perfect ratio of cheese to sauce, with a firm, not soggy, bite. I am such a fan of being able to order a la carte as I am not a lover of the normally requisite beans and rice, and this restaurant delivers without complaint AND with the a la carte prices conveniently printed on the menu. Thank you! Also, the choice of cheese, beef, or chicken enchiladas can be paired with any of several sauces without an up-charge: chili gravy, verde, red, ranchero, cascabel, or mole. You can't go wrong with any combination! In addition, there are several well-priced Mexican plates with all matter of combinations. Drawbacks: it is still beer only (so not a full bar, but maybe not paying for a liquor license allows for their prices to remain low?), and they were out of pastor meat this visit, which I would have loved to try. I also had to ask our busy server a few times for different to-go containers before she got it right, but she did bring us a bag, too, without being asked, so it all worked out. She also got our order completely correct, was attentive, very friendly, and patient. They DO take credit cards (I'm thinking that years back it may have been cash only?), tables are well-spaced, and, they do ask that you wear masks to enter the restaurant. I'm definitely keeping this place on my "must-visit while visiting San Antonio" list! P.S. Make note of their short, daytime-only hours so that you don't miss out: Mon-Sat 7:30am-3pm and Sun 8am-2:30pm. Enjoy, fellow Tex-Mex lovers ! read more

Just tried Piedras Negras De Noche today after not eating here in many years. It has not changed whatsoever. It is still a great place to get delicious Tex mex food for decent prices. Tonight there were only a few others dining tonight so me and my friend experience excellent service and our food arrived fresh, hot and quickly. The Pablo's nachos we ordered for our appetizer were covered in toppings it was almost hard to find the chips. They are not stingy with their portion sizes. When our entree's arrived they were served with warm fresh tortillas. Homemade and so delicious. I ordered the Enchiladas de Pollo w the chili con carne sauce and they were just as I remembered them. Filled w season chicken and the enchilada sauce is divine. I plan on coming back to try some of the other dishes I noticed on the menu and maybe next time I will save room for some Pineapple Tres Leches cake :)! read more

I'm definitely a fan of Piedras Negras. It is a little hidden under the highway and definitely easy to miss, but you will definitely want to stop here if you're looking for good Mexican food in the downtown area (no tourists like at Mi Tierra!). The portions and prices are great! If you come on a weekend they have a guy who sings and plays the keyboard, which is quite entertaining. I've had the tacos, enchiladas, tamales and quesadillas and all are yummy! The only thing is that they definitely cover everything in cheese and sauce. Not exactly the healthiest, but it is super yum! Went here a couple of weeks ago with some friends and they loved it! So glad that I found this place. read more
