For a Mexican restaurant in this context and neighborhood, it's good, but not great. When my friend told the bartender that our margaritas, classic and a mezcal, were bland (tasted like no alcohol and just limey, sugary), he said he'd replace the ice. Bar/cashier staff need training, but kitchen staff are skilled cooks. Spend some time in offering a touch of friendliness in service even if self-serve. It goes a long way. read more

I finally decided to come into this cute mexican cantina for a quick dinner. I had passed it several times and always looked at the menu and read the sign announcing their amazing happy hour. I decided on a carne asada burrito to go. I gotta say I am definitely a Mexican food snob. When I lived in California I ate Mexican pretty much all the time, so I'm used to it being super flavorful. I'm only giving this burrito three stars because it leaned more towards the bland side. Considering it had carne asada, pico de gallo, and guac I expected it to taste super authentic and yummy. I seriously wanted to love this place SO bad! It is directly across the street from my favorite local bar (Bizzare), great location and cute ambiance/decor. But unfortunately my experience was so terrible, they only deserve one star. The owner, Karla, is so incredibly rude, I do not even know how she is running a business. I placed a very simple order with a few modifications. Chicken burrito, no sour cream. Chicken tacos, add cheese. When we received our order, both items had sour cream on them (and no cheese on my tacos! the tacos don't even come with sour cream, why would they add it??). The bartender/waitress immediately apologized, took the order back to be fixed, and even gave us 2 tequila shots on the house! I was very impressed by her hospitality, and was pleased they were so quick to try to correct their error. UNTIL... my tacos came out for a second time. But instead of the lovely waitress, the owner brought them to our table. She basically threw the tray on my table and said "Is this yours?". I looked at the tacos, and this time they ONLY had cheese on them. Where did the rest of the garnishes go?! what happened? I told Karla that they were still incorrect and she FLIPPED OUT ON ME! Granted, I was pretty annoyed and frustrated so my tone of voice was not pleasant, but that was no reason for her to freak out and treat me the way she did. She literally said "you know what, fine. I'm just going to take these and you can have your money back". She then grabbed the tray off of my table and started to storm off. When I said to her "are you being serious right now!?" (bc I was very much in shock at this point), she said "I DON'T GIVE A F***"". Yes, that's right. She dropped the F bomb. To a customer who had already paid. All because THEY messed up my order twice. This woman literally cursed me out!! She is a complete nightmare, and I cannot believe anyone, especially a business owner, would speak to a customer like that! After taking a look at the rest of the reviews on here, I see that Karla has made quite a few not-so friendly responses to other customers, so this must just be in her nature/the type of person she is. (She called one person an "mf", told another person to go make their own guac). And Karla, I fully expect to receive a response from you on this one! :D So, in the end, as much as I wanted to love this place, my experience was so bad, I could never go back, and highly encourage all of you to avoid it. Averagely good Mexican food, the restaurant itself is somewhat pretty inside. Not too expensive either. HOWEVER, their breakfast is always a pretty big disappointment for me. In any egg dish that I've ordered the egg always comes extremely over cooked and a rubbery. Even when I ask for over-easy, sunny side up, etc. I end up with hard yolk and floppy gross whites. This place is amazing if you are just interested in walking in and out, during the day they usually have the nicest bartender but at night (I think she's the owner) is so rude and obnoxious. We got there and set at the bar where we waited for a while before we even got menu's (not that we needed one) but she didn't even ask, and when she finally came around we ordered beer and chips and salsa, as soon as she gave it to us I asked for the spicy sauce and she came right at me with an attitude telling me to wait because she was gonna finish whatever she was doing. $17 dollars, one fish taco, one carnitas taco and a side of fries and guacamole later, I can only day that the Mexican grocery down the road could have give me better food quality and taste for half the price. The chips aren't fresh and the guacamole is watery and obviously not freshly made ( which isn't what they advertise so I'm not griping because of that). They are located off of the busy street, so very accessible. However, parking wasn't easy. It's a self-served restaurant, and clean, big, and well-maintained. I tried their Pollo Bowl, and it was very good and freshly cooked. definitely better quality than Chipotle. On down side, they serve their food in plastic bowl looks like 2-year-old's cereal bowl. I want to like this place. Nice interior (gentrified BK mexican decor), good location. Went last Saturday (7/10/16), service sucked. Woman behind the counter was emoting "i don't care about you" vibes, not helpful or friendly. I'm sure you had lots of better stuff to do than work your restaurant shift lol but you could at least pretend. Food: tacos are good, but $5 for one small taco is just not a good value IMO, should be 3 for $7 or something. Chips and salsa ($5) are a total waste of time and money. These should be free, chips were pretty bad, salsa was weak. Stopped in to order some tacos to go.The lady who took my order was quiet, but friendly. I sat and enjoyed a Mexican Coke (made with cane sugar, not high fructose corn syrup like it's U.S. counterpart) while I waited less than 10 minutes for my order. Walked home, opened the box to see some beautiful and amazing smelling tacos. The chicken was well seasoned and flavorful, I honestly inhaled the taco, it was delicious. The only complaint I have is the texture of the tortilla was a little off... but that was likely due to being in the styrofoam box (perhaps a layer of foil would help for carryout orders?). The chorizo taco was equally delicious, although I favored the chicken just a little bit more. Finished off my meal with some bangin' churros. Everything. Literally everything I've put in my mouth since I sat down has been AMAZING folks. Really great flavor on the chips and salsa. Then they brought out the bucket of margarita and I felt safe. Safe that somewhere in the world, where margaritas are grown from baby margarita plants (there is no such thing but don't tell me you wouldn't be trying to suck leaves in a field if it were). It was strong enough that I felt like one is enough so for the bartender with no edit button...thank you for the night of sleep ahead. First timer tonight. I was immediately waited on by a friendly bartender at the bar. And she made amazing margaritas, even a spicy one. I had a veggie taco. It tasted good and I actually never eat veggie:) Only complaint, not major though, is that the tortilla got soggy towards the end because of the hot sauce u put on it and it goes to the bottom when you eat it. But it's not major because their hot sauce was just spicy enough....even for a hot head like me. And maybe that is an incentive to eat the tacos faster? They are that good after all. I noticed a trend with Yelp reviews here. The more reviews a Yelper has, the lower the star rating. I respect Yelp as a great search engine and I know it actually brings many businesses more customers, which I always support. It's just those few entitled amateur critic Yelpers with way too much time on their hands that can ruin the Yelp experience for everyone. That being said, this is the BEST fish taco I've had in my life. I dream about it every day. The food is so good, I don't care if the staff beats me or publicly shames me. Small Mexican spot with a cafeteria approach, that's worth the visit. However, this past evening I had an uncomfortable experience. I normally frequent this spot with my coworkers. So I always bring more than 2 people at least once a week. After I had paid, thus cashier pulls me to. The side and asks me what I do for a living.. She is named Maria Jose, from what I learned she was fired then rehired recently. She asked what I did for a living Bc apparently I don't tip. Now, let it be understood, that the establishment is cafeteria style, you pay for your food upfront then they call your number and you go up to pick it up. It's like tipping the cashier at McDonald's. Oh and recently I tried to speak to the owner Karla, and Maria José, refuses to put her on the phone. I regularly eat-in and take-out from La Lupe. Was here that fateful day when this large group of possibly over-intoxicated individuals began their scandalous uproar as a consequence of being asked to keep the noise volume down. Inside the restaurant that day there were other people trying to enjoy their dinner, in spite of the shrieks and shrills being emitted from said group. Around 6pm is when the spectacle began, but that group had been there for a while. Shameful to have to write a counter-response that has nothing to do with the actual food. However, La Lupe is delicious. Period. Shameful to see the grievous responses from these offended individuals, who feel they have all the right in the world to sabotage this business and it's owner, while never questioning their own conduct and how offended other people were by their disgraceful attacks, uproar, and vulgarity. Proof is in the pudding...not one review talks about anything other than how they were so-called, mistreated. Perhaps this business owner was actually concerned for the experience and well-being of her "other" customers, the ones who were enjoying their food peacefully and politely. The way in which the animosity of these women is directed at La Lupe and it's owner is a discredit to their own criticisms and serves as testament to the quality of said individuals, particularly in view of the aim of their reviews. I've been here at least 5-7 times since I live close-by and they have really yummy food however they serve awfully small portions for what you pay :/ The burritos are shrunken compared to what you would buy elsewhere at any other Mexican restaurant in the area, and same goes for the bowls - you just get the feeling you are being gipped. I like this place because I can tell they mean well and care about the customers. To be honest the margaritas are FANTASTIC And Very well poured (especially the spicey one) Elote is very good and always a staple order. The reason I give two negative stars is because the tacos are not anything to come back for. Also the pozole soup tends to be very salty every time. All and all. So 2 California Cats staying in Brooklyn decided to check out La Lupe on a coin toss. We were at the Marcy Ave metro stop waiting for the metro for Williamsburg for a spot but the train was delayed. Outside the station we see La Lupe seemingly so close we could California kiss it. We flipped for wait or try La Lupe. While most tables and the entire small patio were available, we chose the bar. Drinks: We each ordered the house margarita, which were served in canning jars, a good size for a margarita with all the flavors. Appetizer: They had chips and guacamole ($8) as well as chips and salsa ($6). We wanted both guacamole and salsa. The bartender pointed out that we could get a side of guacamole for $5, $11 for C+G+S. The guacamole and salsa were excellent. The salsa was actually made from tomatoes, onion, and peppers (unlike Calaca). The Chips were medicore really a store bought but a multi-grain variety which was nice if not fresh. One of the first warm spring evenings and I wanted to go out for dinner and drinks but not too far from home. I saw La Lupe once or twice in passing on my walk home from the train and decided to have dinner there. Very happy I did. Started out with a spicy Margarita (the Picosa if I'm not mistaken) - so good. Spicy and cool - great combo. Along with one of those and 2 Coronas, we shared chips & guac, each of us had one chorizo, one carnita and one beef taco, and each had an elote. Guac was tasty and a great amount of it to go with the chips. The tacos were nice and the sauces provided were great - I recommend the hot and fruity one the most. I haven't eaten chorizo much in the past, but these tacos were my favorite of the three types, all served in soft but lightly crisped taco shells. The elote, though - man was it good. No, it was great. Perfect amount of char from the grill, seasoned perfectly. Nailed it - a real winner in my book. I've been back three more times since and will for sure be back again and again. Yeah, so I rarely post reviews but my mind is literally blown.. I've been mad sick from a CO leak in my apartment and finally had an appetite so I called this place and placed an order for pickup. I specifically said ONLY avocado, beans, and steak. I paid, went home, and took two bites before realizing it had cilantro in it--it wasn't avocado, but guacamole, and I immediately had an allergic reaction. I called and asked to speak to a manager and they said there was no manager there currently, so I decided to go in. When I went to go give them back my burrito, the guy behind the counter got all defensive, saying he didn't make my burrito. Sure... but surely there must be some communication between the order-taker and the kitchen? If someone is specific about ingredients, that order should be honored and taken seriously. I yelled at the waiter, like anyone would after suffering a major allergic reaction, and he got sassy and said that I "should have let him know it was an allergy" and "sorry, what else do you want me to say. I said sorry and gave you your money back." .... Aren't I entitled to my money back if they royally screw up an order? I then asked for the manager's contact info and he said HE was the manager and said he could put me in touch with the owner. (Although, seconds ago on the phone, there apparently was no manager in the store.) Did I get a manager's contact info? No, he just gave me the restaurant number....which is on google. Despicable. I have eaten here a few times since October 2015 and the food is always delicious and fresh and the service always pleasant and on point. I always order the chicken bowl and they recommended a drink that tastes just like sweet tea which I enjoy very much. I love the rustic appeal mixed with abstract Mexican art. I have come with 3 different people and they have liked is as well. From Karla's responses, I see she is feisty but has always been kind and courteous to me.
