I've been Here twice now and both times it was absolutely fabulous. The crepes are perfect and the banana fresh toast is mind blowing. It's small and quaint and the seating is at kind of weird angles. The floors and bathroom were spotless. The coffee is is good as any fancy coffee house. This has been my favorite place for breakfast ever since we moved here a few years ago. Stylish gourmet food, french pastries, and great espresso coffee, etc. However on my last visit here, I went inside and told the server(leading server?) a family of three. She told me the wait was 45 minutes. My husband didn't want to wait that long, and wanted to try again. What happened next? He went in 3 minutes later and the same server immediately let us in. Yes, of course my husband is a white male. I don't mean to make this a race thing, but I cannot help but wonder. Do they pay people to write reviews on here? I went here based on all the glowing remarks and ended up bringing home leftovers I'll probably toss. The service wasn't much better. After we finished our tomato soup I told my daughter this could've used some bread and butter. A couple minutes later the bread came. It was dry and dense almost like a scone. We both had sandwiches. The quality of meat on my sandwich was so poor and tough that I couldn't chew it. On a brighter note the cheese cake was amazing. What a bummer. I really wanted to like this place. read more

During our "racecation"** we stopped in hoping to have brunch, but missed it by 20 minutes. Even though I was disappointed, w e stayed and had lunch since we were famished after running the Newport Half Marathon. By the way....best decision ever! We had The Mimosas (delicious, mixed perfectly, fresh OJ), Monte Cristos, and Mediterranean sandwiches. The food was delicious and the service was phenomenal. The owner was our server and she was so nice and very engaging. We knew we were definitely going to be back the next day for the Eggs Benedict (what we went there for in the first place). Day 2: We're back!!!! Nothing short of AMAZING!!! Eggs Sardou and Swedish Cured Salmon Benedict also the Loire Valley Omelet. Couldn't pass up another Mimosa and Bloody Mary. While I'm still giving La Maison five stars, something's changed. Let's face it, nothing in life is static, and I accept that businesses have to reinvent themselves in order to survive. La Maison has been and will always be on our list of places we have to visit on our costal trips. The food was up to the usual high standards, but a few things stand out that made want to say something in person but will fall back on the anonymity of the internet. First, what happened to the little free bananas and hazelnut aperitif that was brought to your table when you sat down? Perhaps a cost cutting measure, maybe too many people didn't enjoy it, but I loved that nice little local touch. Second, my wife's dish had to be re-fired TWICE! The first time was because it had onions, an ingredient not listed on the menu. When the new omelet came out, there was no cheese! Instead of having it made yet again, we just asked for a slice of cheese and called it good. I got the impression that they might have been short handed, but regardless it's those little things that often wind up giving an establishment a one or two star review. We still love you, but please, I hope this was just fluke. Oh, AND FIX THE DAMN ESPRESSO MACHINE!! This is like the third time that we've been in and haven't been able to get espresso. I'm an unabashed foodie, Whenever I'm planning a visit to a new town I research first where I'm going to eat - THEN where to stay and what to do while I'm there! I popped onto TripAdvisor to read through the Newport restaurant reviews, and decided from other diner's comments and the menus that La Maison was indeed our kind of place. The food, as others have pointed out, was just stellar. Creamy potato soup, buttery croissants (the chef uses only imported French butter for his croissants for a more authentic taste), rich, decadent hollandaise spiked with just a whisper of Pernod, golden-yolked local farm eggs, OJ squeezed to order, and a pastry case filled with house-made breads, cakes and indulgences to die for. Although absolutely everything behind the glass looked scrumptious, we followed the chef's suggestion and took home slices of coconut cake with lemon curd as my birthday cake - it was just ridiculously delicious. Even their coffee was amazing. What you DON'T really get from the reviews is the friendliness of the young couple who run the place - Kate, at the front of the house, and her husband Cliff in the kitchen. They're just delightful, and Kate even steered me to another restaurant (Local Ocean) the first day we happened by, as I really wanted a seafood dinner that night and La Maison is a decidedly breakfast and lunch cafe (except, apparently, a special dinner once a month). We stayed for soup and pastry that afternoon, and liked them so much we went back over the next two days. One last unexpected treat: the bruleed bananas and creme amuse bouche that was presented to us while we sipped our coffee and waited for brekkies was just awesome -- I am SO stealing that idea for my next at home brunch! :-) read more

Yelped this place randomly driving through Newport, and had no wait at all... Our server was slightly ditzy, but it was part of a very affable personality that made for a great experience. I ordered the cream of potato soup, as well as the burger (surprise). I feel guilty not giving this place five stars. But I just can't: unfortunately, despite all of the praise I am about to give La Maison, my burger was way overcooked. This was somewhat hidden by the wonderful house-baked roll, delicious bacon, and Oregon bleu cheese, but at the same time, it was pretty obvious. So with a pouty face for not allowing half stars, I have to give La Maison 4 stars this time around. But onto the greatness, as there is no shortness of it at this charming little spot! The fresh baked 7-grain bread was heavenly, poppy and sesame seeds on a grain bread is always a good idea. It was so good that we bought a loaf to go, along with a half-slice of chocolate cake (we split the last slice with some random lady, since none of us could possibly eat a slice of cake that large), and two croissants. The cream of potato soup was divine. There was some cheese in the broth, which made the flavor that much more rich, yet somehow not heavy. The restaurant is well kept, full of delicious smells, wonderful service, great food, and at a block off the main drag, I have to thank Yelp for bringing La Maison to our attention. For a coastal town, La Maison is definitely a 5-star place. The same restaurant dropped into Portland, more of a 3-4 star place. Regardless, it's a definite place for brunch if you're looking for something good and tasty in Newport. As others have said, it's a tiny, intimate place. Definitely make a reservation. Even with a reservation, you will probably still be waiting. So be patient! And don't plan to come here if you're on a time crunch- it's slow food at a slow and leisurely pace. Thank you Yelp! My partner and I were camping nearby at Beverly Beach State Park, and stopped here for breakfast. What a find! The coffee was amazing; dark and strong. Complimentary bowls of bananas, fresh cream, and brown sugar were offered. YUM! Such a nice touch. I had the eggs bene. Thick slab of ham, perfectly poached eggs, wonderful hollaindaise, on top of HUGE home made English muffins. I don't think I've ever had a homemade E. Muff before, and this was delicious. It was a lot of bread for my personal taste, but I looked around an everyone else in the place finished theirs. Yelp let me down on this one! The food was okay, maybe good by small beach town standards, but nothing great. However, the service was abysmal! We waited over 15 minutes just to get our menus, and I had to flag down the waitress to get those. It was another 10 minutes for water and coffee. it was another long wait for the food to come out. No one came by to offer to refill our coffee or water, we had to flag down the only waitress (who spent most of her time hanging out in the kitchen--it's an open kitchen, I could see her). When she finally brought more coffee, she had switched our mugs (I ended up with my husband's regular coffee, and he got my decaf. I noticed latter when I got the shakes and nasty headache that I get with regular coffee). They were out of croissants, so I settled for an English muffin (too big, too tough, and tasted "off"--maybe it was supposed to be sourdough?). My husband's omelet had a large piece of eggshell in it, and when we pointed it out to the waitress, she apologized and offered us a discount. Unfortunately, that discount wasn't reflected on the check, and she wasn't anywhere to be found when we went up front to pay. They had a lady playing guitar and singing, and it is a tiny (maybe 10 tables) restaurant. She didn't need the microphone and the amp; it was a little overwhelming. However, she was the friendliest person on staff as far as I could tell. So...we ate at La Maison over the weekend and it wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. Had breakfast and they were WAY understaffed. We had some questions for our server and she was just plain rude... Example. We asked what was the artichoke sauce and her answer "it's artichoke sauce". Umm I think I got that part but what is it made from?!? We don't eat cheese or cream so I think it was a valid question. We ended up ordering the Egg Sardu Benedict and my honey ordered an omelet with no sauce and no cheese. My benedict was good except they were out of their homemade English Muffins and they used French bread and it was a little too crispy so it was a tad hard. His omelet came out with cheese so I had to eat alone while they recooked his. No apology came from the server for her mistake, which the chef asked her what we ordered and she admitted that she messed up. We never got a refill on our waters and she never checked back with us to see how the meal was. Just seriously needed a refresher course in serving 101. The croissant was lovely. Buttery goodness. Frankly they are getting two stars because of the croissant alone. If that hadn't been the bomb it would have been one star. I thought the place was cute and I loved the open kitchen concept they got going on but they really need to work on the customer service aspect of their business and maybe hire a back waiter to help out or just another server for the rush times. read more

This is a cute little place with a tiny little parking lot, but there is plenty of street parking. There were 2 empty tables that needed to be cleaned when we walked in, so it was a little off-putting at first when we were told it would be a 15-20 minute wait. But taking into consideration there were only 3 people who seemed to be prepping, cooking, serving, handling pick-up orders at the counter, and seemingly several other things at once, it wasn't a big deal. We walked down to the Saturday Farmer's Market at the end of the street while we waited. I believe they actually called when our table was ready. Our server brought out small dishes of bananas and cream with roasted hazelnuts while we waited for our orders to come out. Yum. My friend had the Loire Valley omelet and I had the Paris omelet. You see, if I tell you how wonderful the food is you will inevitably end up eating here, I am a local, and I wish this place wasn't going to be crowded with people. I think the word might be out though. The food is marvelous. The chef and owner obviously put an enormous amount of effort into the menu. My favorite is the chicken salad and the banana French toast. Seriously though...I've never been disappointed. The service is top notch too. They treat you like you are important to them and their business. Which is refreshing in a tourist town. Ok...the desserts. I seriously can not convey how over the top they are. If you want a treat THIS IS THE BEST PLACE. Honestly, I'm not going to gush anymore. Just take my word for it. The service was attentive and the small establishment was busy for a Thursday morning. The english muffin was clearly made in house, the ham was thick cut and the egg was cooked to perfection. The hollandaise was spot on. The croissant was one of the better ones I've ever had. Served with butter and jam, it was huge, buttery, flakey, messy and altogether wonderful. Lots of artichoke options if that's your thing; it certainly was ours! The portions are quite substantial and was once again a double edged sword for us. I wish I had a chance to go in and try the pastries. I was told to move my car off the street as there was no parking. And no sign to say no parking. So ok, I moved my car to their parking lot, parked in the shade near the entrance. Again the not so nice lady came out and told me to move my car to a 'space'. How does a big dirt lot have a space? In all the time she wasted telling me where I could not park, she could easily have sold me $20 worth of baked goods. I left before she ordered me to do something else. We wanted something different! Oh man, did we ever get what we wanted! Crepes, filled with artichoke bottoms, artichoke sauce, cheese-y and perfectly cooked - a threesome of crepes on hubby's plate. It was magnificent! Then, my eggs Sardou, oh my god - they were perfect - poached eggs done exactly right, homemade (yes, HOMEMADE) English muffins - chewy and large - SO GOOD! Bacon was thick and perfectly cooked, and not too salty and not too fatty - good quality! Everything was so good. It can take a while here. The food is made to order. And before we ate our main course, here came our server with a little glass bowl of sliced bananas for each of us, with a dollop of heavy cream and roasted hazelnuts, whole, with a tiny bit of sugar that might have been torched for texture. That was the most decadent prelude to breakfast I've ever had. It was tiny but filling! I loved it so much. My minor complaint - the Hollandaise sauce tasted different. I have an idea that it was not made with butter - or if it was, there was something else in there that covered up the butter flavor, and it was not the lemon. So I'm not sure if they are using real butter or maybe another fat for their sauce. But it was still okay, just not like I make at home with egg yolks, butter & lemon. I'm picky about this sauce. It has to be right. But I'll try it again next time I go and see if it was me. It might have been my taste buds; it had the right texture. They have some beautiful baked goods like croissants and of course they bake bread too. We will be back every single trip to Newport because it was such a delightful experience. Okay I gave this place two stars because the food was about *80%* there. It was good, fairly authentic French style food. But the service? Wow. It was the worst I've had in a while. First off, we arrived and got a table nearly right away. Everything seemed like it was going to go well. Then 5 minutes passed. Then 10. Then 15. Then after many glances back to the open kitchen someone finally realized we were waiting on menus. The waitress brought the menu over and didn't seem apologetic at all. I had to stare her down at that point to get her to offer me a coffee. You should know right before she came over to finally greet us I was ready to walk out. Our coffees arrive. It's not stellar by my standards, but it'll do. Our cream ran out pretty quick but we didn't get an offer of a refill. On the coffee or the cream. My breakfast arrived and what was described as an omelet looked like soup. I chalked that up to being 'authentic'. Okay, maybe the French drown their eggs in cream sauce? I barely ate half before I was finished. Way too rich. I did enjoy the flavor and everything else about it, aside from the massive amount of it. They were out of crossaints (...we overheard that half that morning's batch was burnt), so I had no other choice but an english muffin. It was massive and there was no way I could eat it with my already overly-rich omelet. A good 10 minutes later we were acknowledged again to take our plates. When asked if we'd like a refill, we reminded the waitress that my wife drinks decaf and I don't. When we got our cups back they were *switched*. Not just the cups, but the coffee itself. So my wife had anxiety attacks all the way home. Plus, if it weren't my wife, would I really want to re-use a cup from my dining companion? I really did *like* the food, but it was just a bit too overwhelming and the service was a big problem. I'd say if you're thinking about this place, expect it to go spectacular or fail horribly. The food in Newport keeps getting better, and La Maison is a great example of that. We came in for breakfast on Christmas Eve and ordered an omelet and Eggs Sardou. The hollandaise on the Sardou was probably the best I've had. It didn't feel overly heavy or rich, and there was just the barest hint of lemon. Most impressively the sauce didn't break nor did it gloop up as the dish cooled. The omelet was perfectly executed, also covered in a rich, but maybe too buttery sauce. It came with a croissant that is as good as Grand Central's or Baker & Spice's. On the way out we grabbed a loaf of sourdough and a slice of cheesecake. the sourdough was still warm and and the cheesecake was creamy but not too heavy. The place is definitely family run. The service is as polished as any breakfast place, but it feels much more authentically warm than most places. It was pretty quiet when we went in, just one other party dining at the time. If there was a rush, I would guess the kitchen or waitstaff could probably get backed up. read more

Not a pancake and waffle place. Very small (reservations are taken and HIGHLY recommended) and with a limited menu, but the food is superb. Huge French influence, including in the pace of dining. Not a place to be in a hurry, but a great place to enjoy the coffee, order a pastry to share while you wait for your main, and take some time to plan your day. Eggs Benedict, both the traditional and a smoked salmon version, were outstanding. Perfectly poached eggs, with the whites totally done and the yolks like heavy cream (how do they DO that?). As others have noted, the English muffins are simply killer. Like an English muffin and a French brioche had a love child. The hollandaise is fresh and lively without the chemically enhanced jelly like texture that many commercial sauces get. The savory Crepes Versailles were outstanding. The crepes themselves were light and tender, the perfect balance between being strong enough to hold the filling and light enough to melt in your mouth. The vegetables were fresh, the eggs nicely cooked. Breakfast pastries were wonderful, it's clear that baking is the owners first love.
