This is one of my favorite Mexican joints in the neighborhood. It sits across the street to an iconic scene from the movie Dazed and Confused. The food is great and pretty authentic and the margaritas are INCREDIBLE. It has great outside seating and the inside seating feels like you're in Mexico. Highly recommend! read more

The restaurant/food itself was good - but the catering company (JC's Catering) is the WORST company I have ever dealt with. We did a tasting for our wedding catering back in January, was told we would receive an updated invoice/contract after we verbally said yes to booking (the original invoice we received prior to the tasting had the incorrect food options/pricing so it was invalid), never received one between January and May, and just received a text from JC stating he will not be catering the wedding. Now we are less than two months out and stuck with no plan for food for our guests. The most unprofessional, unorganized company I've ever come across. read more

Everything is so-so. Food is average. I'd give it one star for attentiveness. We asked for just about everything - you know the things that attentive waitstaff would normally notice. Can I order a drink? Can I have a plate? Can I have chips for the queso? can I have more Salsa? The kicker was asking the waiter to pour the first Mexican Martini. We were hoping for no spillage - as we knew we couldn't accomplish the task. She poured (no better than us). Stream of margarita on the floor. The puddle still sits beside our table 45 minutes later. The waiter stated she drinks one with a straw. And we should consider that next time. Next round, drink ordered. After waiting a good while...long enough to wonder if we placed an order the waiter returned with drink in hand and asked if it belonged to us because there was no ticket on it. How are we to know??? The quesadilla was hot and good, the Mancha Bowl was luke warm but still tasty, the Caldo de pollo was ice cold and the vegetables in the soup where not cooked, the flautas where over cooked. The Manager came over and agreed to all faults and took the soup and flautas off the bill. It was fair. My server did an ok job. It's odd, she didn't do a bad job, I just felt like I always needed to flag her down when I needed something. The food was mehhh. I wouldn't call it tex mex, if call it Americanized Mexican food. I got beef fajitas and the meat was a little tough and chewy and seasoned very minimally. The charro beans I didn't care for. Whenever I leave a negative review I really do try to be objective and look at the positive. Yes, their food is decent and the location is super convenient for me. The bad: I tried to come here on a Friday night, just my small dog and me to sit on the patio and eat dinner. I asked a server I passed on the way in if dogs were allowed and she gladly said yes. The hostess came outside to inform me that "dogs aren't allowed when it's busy" but that she would ask her manager anyways. Okay, post your arbitrary "pet hours" somewhere, maybe online. I so wanted to enjoy La Mancha. It appears to have everything going for it; great location, fantastic, laid back patio and a full bar. It would be a great place to just hang out with a margarita and people watch. There is just something about this location and the 'vibe' it gives off that make it a place I would really like to patronize more often. This location used to be a Jorges and it totally ROCKED. Great food and great prices. BF and I were very sad to see it close, and we waited a couple of months before trying the new place. Hit it on a Sunday, at the tail end of brunch; we really wanted to eat outside somewhere, as it was so gorgeous out! Hostess showed us to our table (after we waited for a few minutes outside the front door.) There was a sign saying 'hostess will seat you' so we kinda stood there, not realizing the 'hostess' was staring at us from inside the restaurant, and you have to seek them out to 'seat you'. Okay. Got our seats out on the patio, so far so good. Menu review was interesting, but the first thing we noticed were the prices. (ASIDE: we do NOT mind paying for good food, but prices at a TexMex place should not be over ten dollars for a plate. Ever.) Even just two tamales with refried beans and rice were ten bucks. (WHAT?) End of aside. Despite my strong affection for fish tacos, I decided to forgo them this time; not that I wouldn't have liked to have them, but there is no way in hell I am paying thirteen bucks for two fish tacos, beans and rice. The menu WAS interesting; they have a little bit of variety from the usual TexMex fare and I ordered the Tacos Al Pastor. BF ordered the El Numero Uno. They have a cute little 'Don Quixote' thing going with the menu which I would have enjoyed, if the food lived up to the hype. Alas, it did not. Although tasty, the Al Pastor tacos had small, cat food looking CHUNKS of meat and pineapple. It had a fairly good flavor, but was too chewy. Had the pork been shredded, it would have been great. The refried beans and rice were tasty, however. The taco shells tasted stale. As with mine, the BF's plate was just 'okay'...beans and rice good, everything else meh. He even left the cheese enchilada half eaten, as the cheese was very rubbery. The waitress seemed new to the game; she took our drink order (Coke and Dr. Pepper), walked three feet to the door and had to turn around and ask 'Coke and Dr. Pepper, right?' Just didn't seem to have the 'flow' but sometimes that can't be helped. Here is my admonition to La Mancha: TIGHTEN IT UP FOLKS! You have a great thing there, now the food and service just need to live up to it. TexMex is not the costliest food to prepare and serve, so bring those prices down a little bit. GEEZ! I think the fact that I ate at Guero's a couple of weeks ago also colored my opinion. We had an awesome, tasty meal there, the food was fresher and better and about 2 bucks cheaper per person. Everything at La Mancha just tasted stale, stale, stale. (Even the guacamole...I'm not sure how you can even DO that!?!) We might just have to wait for the next person who opens a restaurant in this location and hope it is better than this. It's a poor, pale imitation of the Jorges that used to be in it's place. You will love this place if you like friendly waitstaff and boring, flavorless Tex-Mex. we used to love going to Jorge's - it was a nice, ok Tex-Mex restaurant. La Mancha is more like a great idea that just never comes true. I had the Tilted Windmill. I should have changed my order when the waitress said,oh that steak thingy. The 'beef filet' was about a millimeter thick and tasted a lot like a hangar steak (minus the seasoning, and really chewy), or maybe shoe leather. They put cinnamon on it... So it smelled like a cheap stripper... It at least had that going for it. The rest of the meal was cold. It was magical... Since the plate itself was so hot! If you like pork tamales with unmelted cheese and a hard center - this place is for you. My wife had a shrimp salad. It looked amazing. It could have been one of those magazine meals... You know the ones. They show programs on TV where they have these meals they photograph that look amazing. Like those, it was all for show. It was like they sprayed shellac on it to keep it pretty. Better that, then salt or any real seasonings - right? Hey it's a salad, so they should make it healthy. It was so healthy that you don't want to eat it, just look at it and go, wow... Healthy. So, if you like bad tex-mex, don't care for seasoning, or just want to leave hungry, try La Manca. read more

Wow! What a rude owner. My 11 yr old drew a smiley face and her name with crayons on the cinder block wall at the playground and he freaked out. Followed us outside after coming to our table to complain about it, and actually asked if we were going to come back tomorrow to clean it up. Don't give kids crayons and a playground if you're not a Kid friendly place! Obviously he doesn't have kids and never will. We've tried La Mancha several times but I think we're done. Mondays this place has a nice special on two for one fajitas. This combined with some nice drink specials during happy hour means you can get a good meal with a drink for about twenty bucks for two people. That's a good deal, and should make us want to come back. But what should be and what is are two different things. This week we tried La Mancha again. Our server was slow, inept and rude but other than that was fine. (This is sarcasm folks - I wouldn't wish this guy on someone I didn't like). He didn't know the drink specials, the daily special or how to be pleasant. When I got the drift that he didn't give a shit, I let him go. There was then some discussion between he, some other servers and the manager: apparently there was a debate about who had to take the table. Odd, since the place was way more than half empty. Things were slow folks. Eventually Mr Personality was replaced by a real person who was actually very nice and looked like she wanted to be there. Unfortunately she was the high point of the day. The chips were thick and stale. This is Austin folks - we know what fresh chips taste like. Can ya break down and buy some? The salsa was forgettable. And the entree? Well, its a two for one deal, remember? Fajitas for two? The serving as delivered was mostly beans and rice (which was pretty crummy - even in a town that doesn't know how to cook Mexican rice, it was bad) but the actual beef was pretty skimpy. How skimpy? My trainer from my bootcamp arranged for happy hour with his campers. So he made reservations at this place. With it's retro neon sign, the patio and good food, I like this place. The decor does look like a tavern. I love the metal stars as lighting. I was with a huge group of people and the service was attentive. I was the first to arrive from my group and they set up the table right away. I ordered the Tavern Tacos with shredded chicken, a small dish of guacamole and Mexican Coke. I have visited this place a half dozen times, hoping it would be better. But now after visiting it a sixth time, I'm finally ready to write the honest review. The food is overpriced for what you get. Take for example the bowl I ordered most recently. It included a bunch of ingredients that I like... meat, sour cream, cheese, avocado, rice, and beans. Unfortunately, this bowl was almost ALL rice and beans. This was not the case the first time I ordered this particular entree. When we had brunch there six weeks ago, the brunch menu was similarly littered with carbs. Add to that the fact that it is pretty much impossible to order an entree for under $10... it's a pretty raw deal IMO. You can't schlep mostly cheap food (rice, beans, carbs) for that kind of money and hope to keep a clientele. The only thing I've really found to be better than ordinary was the fajitas... but at $15+ for a single serving, I think I'll take my chances elsewhere. Rosedale could use a great Tex-Mex joint, but I don't think this is it. read more

I want to like La Mancha because it has so much potential. It could be a great neighborhood spot for Allandale dwellers. However, pretty much everything I've ordered seems thrown together and not fresh. I ordered the chicken fajita bowl last time I was at La Mancha, and the grilled veggies tasted soggy and weird. My boyfriend and I both agreed that the verde sauce on the side tasted like straight up vinegar. The staff was attentive but pissed off, it seemed. That's understandable because some of the customers seemed like demanding babies, but the overall aura of the place made me feel strange and like I just wanted to go home. I might come back during a happy hour and give La Mancha another go. It seems like a place you could eventually enjoy the more inebriated you become. read more

This place was terrible for Tex-Mex. I would consider it an American cuisine restaurant, one below Denny's. Taco Cabana is better than La Mancha! I was so, so disappointed. The dishes have spanish names but are not even closely resembling the dishes they pretend to be. And seriously, what is the obsession with putting stringy soggy purple onion as a garnish to LITERALLY every single plate??? All taste buds aside, my husband did literally get sick eating here. Wait staff was so-so, they don't look too happy to be there but they attended when needed. Please, for your sake, don't eat here. You want an amazing burrito? I'm absolutely baffled at the one star reviews. The food was great. Particularly because it wasn't the same as EVERY other Mexican place in Austin. I'm from south Texas, and this food was a lot more like the border food I grew up on. Everyone at the table was pleased with dinner with lots of promises to come back. Our service was good too. Remodel is fantastic, I love the new layout and patio area. Unfortunately this place has two traits that will prevent us from returning (and we live in the neighborhood within walking distance). 1. Terrible food, possibly among the worst texmex restaurants in Austin. The queso alone was horrific, it had a strong powdery consistency and taste and had a 'drizzle' on top of it that tasted like a vinegar-based salad dressing. 2. Terribly overpriced. $13 for chicken fajita tacos? Chuys has the same thing for under $10, and the quality is about 10 times better (and I don't even necessarily count Chuys as the best texmex in the city)! We got yet another one of those $20 credits in the mail but we never even went back to use it. We will wait for another restaurant to occupy this space. read more

La Mancha is working through the quirks of being a new restaurant - and doing well. I'm looking forward to going again! The patio is nice - needs a little more shade on the edges and some plants to help cool it down, but was very pleasant last night. House Mexican Martini is pretty good and full bar has a good selection. Food was good. Shrimp nachos were very tasty and, while you can tell the kitchen hasn't found it's groove yet, dinner was overall very good. I think people need to understand that it takes more than one day to get a restaurant right. If they don't go back because grand opening day wasn't perfect, it just means that I don't have to wait in line as long! read more

I grew up in San Antonio and I'm unashamed to say I'm a Tex Mex snob. With that said, I'm very happy to have La Mancha in the neighborhood. It's a fun place to eat, drink, watch the game and hang out with friends. Also, a great medium price point between neighborhood dives and Fonda San Miguel. So far, I've tried their cheese enchiladas, beef fajitas, queso, guacamole and house margarita. All of them were very tasty. Also, the refried beans and mexican rice are a cut above most places in Austin (although the bay leaf in the rice is a bit unnecessary, in my opinion). On both trips, service couldn't have been nicer. I already want to go back for a third week in a row. read more

I just had the type of experience that makes me want to stop going out.... Ordered chicken fajitas and ended up with cold strips of flavorless meat. I know it was hot once upon a time because the cheese that I paid and extra dollar for was melted. The plate underneath was piping hot, like they had it in the oven and just slapped some chicken on top from a warming tray. Beans and rice were cold and dry... and the wrong type of beans on top of that. Tortillas were served in a hot steamer tray, but miraculously were able to stay below room temperature. I mean seriously that's the easiest part to get right. It's like they don't have room for food in the ovens because they're busy warming up the plates. When I asked for the check the waitress came back with a tea for my friend and asked me if I wanted another drink. Nope, just the check please (that's twice at 10 minutes wait each time). We watched her wait on two other tables while I considered dining and dashing for the first time since high school. Another 10 minutes later she came back and asked if I wanted Tres Leches cake. NO!!! I want to end this horrible experience so I can go home and warm up some tastier leftovers. CHECK PLEASE!! Oh the décor was fabulous. Design is the best place about this restaurant. I hate being critical, but I am struggling with finding anything positive to say about the food. Here's one: the guacamole was very fresh and yummy, albeit a bit on the bland side (did they forget the salt?). The ice tea was old (make a fresh batch every day!). Nothing about our meals (chicken fajitas and truck stop enchiladas) is worth mentioning. We surmised that the owners bought into the design and updating of the building first, and thought about the menu second. The ingredients are second rate, and the assembly of them is about as creative as a high school cafeteria. This place needs a new head chef. read more

I happened to be born in Dallas, had grandparents who lived up in Dallas, and still have relatives who live in Dallas. And for reasons I am trying to put in writing, La Mancha reminds me a ton of the Mexican restaurants in Dallas. Maybe it's the slightly upscale menu (and slightly higher prices); maybe it's the enchiladas coming with onions; or maybe it's the carrot slices with the jalapenos that I remember from El Chico as a kid. Regardless of what you think of Dallas, La Mancha is doing the best fajitas in Austin these days. The fajitas are cooked well done and served with generous portions of tortillas and all the condiments, including that nostalgic combination of jalapeno slices with carrot slices. In addition, the fajitas can come with rice and/or beans at your request. The rice was also very nostalgic of classic Tex-Mex places, not having a lot of vegetables in it, but being a plain, simple, well seasoned Spanish rice. Additionally, our server Jayde went out of her way to accommodate all of our requests on the menu, made sure our orders came out perfectly, and kept the tea filled. It was not crowded at all when we went, so bear that in mind, but we had very fast and attentive service. The server knew the menu well and seemed very eager to make a good impression; I think they're really trying to improve since they only opened 2 weeks ago. The frozen margarita was good and exactly what you'd expect, but I didn't try one on the rocks, so I can't truly evaluate their drinks. The food was good, but nothing extraordinary. The black beans were particularly good, as far as sides go. I liked the decor, and we sat on the patio, where there are multiple fans and a large screen tv. It was quite comfortable despite being July in central Texas. I would come here again, but I do think the food and drinks are a bit overpriced for what they are. Maybe it's a better happy hour place (happy hour prices all day Tues), but for their full prices, I would expect a little more. read more

La Mancha needs to take some lessons from the owners of Jorge's. The food was not good. The meat looked like Taco Bell meat, the rice had no flavor, and the beans were bland. The décor was fresh. The price for the meal was higher than expected. I am a huge Tex-Mex fan, and this was not Tex-Mex. I don't think I will be back. That was a first and last for me at La Mancha. Where to start? The salsa seriously tasted as though rotten tomatoes were used to make it. The girl who waited on us was the most timid and awkward waitress ever who apparently only knows the word "cool." Food was overpriced... ie: wilted lettuce with bland "Caesar dressing" for $10 and a sliver of fish on store bought tortillas with some pico thrown on top for $13. The teen aged busboys were literally throwing around chairs and clanking dishes all around us while about nine waiters hung around the hostess stand waiting to get cut. The margaritas were 80% ice and extremely weak. The waitress literally stood over my husband waiting for him to take his last bite and then grabbed his plate as he was putting down his fork. Then she asked if we wanted the check without offering dessert or anymore drinks. I will say that the food came out fast...so that was nice. read more

Favorite place in the allandale neighborhood to get nachos hand down. They make their nachos with individual chips that each have beans meat and cheese on them. Opposed to a giant heap of stuff thrown on chips with most chips not even getting cheese on them. They also include pickled onions and sour cream and guac. Main gripe: It's called "La Mancha Tex Mex Tavern". I wouldn't call this Tex Mex. The house enchilada sauce is some kind of sweet Cinnamon Pineapple Mole not red chile sauce...at least state this on the menu. In Austin where there is a plethora of traditional tex mex restaurants it's nice to have an option where the cuisine is a little bit off the beaten path. Here you will find all your regular tex mex favorites: queso, fajitas, margaritas. But with a flair. The atmosphere is definitely a welcomed upgrade from Jorge's, neighbors in Rosedale/ Allendanle area will enjoy the improved space! Pro Tip: Save room for dessert! Try the cheese cake empanadas and the tres leches cake! read more

We love La Mancha! Food is upscale Tex-Mex influenced by interior MX. This is not your average Tex-Mex. Our favorite dinners are the Comal Cadillac Platter, Shrimp Quesadillas, La Mancha bowls of all kinds (chicken, shrimp, portobello, fish), Chicken Verde and Barbacoa enchiladas, ALL SCRUMPTIOUS. Try the Pescado del Rey for a real special treat. What they do with shrimp in any dish gives them amazing flavors. The weekend brunch is also delightful, especially the Pork Carnitas Hash. Everything goes exceptionally well with their Mexican martinis and margaritas on the rocks. Their frozen ritas are pretty weak and have to be kicked up with a shot of Tequila on the side. Our food has always been prepared and served well. The first time we ever had the appetizer Camarones Diablo they overcooked the shrimp but we discussed it with the waiter and subsequent orders have been absolutely perfect. For dessert, do give the Mango Tres Leches a try. They add a smear of rasberry puree or something like it and some fresh strawberries as tasty accents which just sets off the milky cake and luscious mango to perfection. The cinder-block decor may be tacky to some but it's not everywhere and combined with the Mexican horror movie posters and the old doors separating the bar from the main dining room, the restaurant has a campy and very comfortable Austin vibe. This restaurant is very family friendly with an outdoor space for kids to play. There is also a private room separate from the main dining room for special group occasions. read more

These guys are getting a pretty bad rap here on yelp. I think it's actually a huge upgrade for the neighborhood. The space is really cool, first off. Apparently much of the interior is reclaimed material from a warehouse in la grange. Its nice and clean, and the floor is level, all of which are upgrades from Jorges. We actually really liked the food. My husband got one of the bowls, which sounds kind of chain restaurant but it was really good. The ingredients are clearly good quality and fresh, and it was a reasonably healthy option for tex mex- just a little agua fresca. I got the jalapeno rellenos as an entree. Very good but they were actually painfully hot. The only place they lost points from us were their margaritas. I got their house margaritas and they definitely tasted like a mix. I didn't get any sticker shock with them, but for a modestly upscale place like this I expect lime juice and agave. They're just a mile and a half from home for us so we'll definitely be regulars... read more
