The omelette was cooked perfectly with piles of birria meat and cheese and cilantro! The biscuit was grilled in butter and I asked for jam. The make a homemade compote that was made from blackberries. Just delicious! I do not know why people are not wrapping around the building to get in. Nice spot if you're in the area and in the mood for Mexican. This building is older but I really enjoyed festive vibe the current owners given the interior. Good chips and salsa. The menu has plenty of options without being too big. I kept it simple with the ground beef Enchilada (no cheese). It had a sweet flavor to it that I liked. I also got a Veg Chimichanga which was new to me. The seasoning was very light but I didn't get the cheese sauce so that could be why. Nice service but a little slow. I'd never been to El Mezcal but I have been to many of the restaurants here before Mezcal. As I entered the restaurant the hostess desk was empty. A young lady came to seat me but there was a language barrier with the hostess but we worked through it. Lunch is served Monday - Saturday from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Today, I ordered the Special Lunch #1 with a Chili Relleno, Chicken Taco, guacsalad and beans ($6.99). The Chili Relleno was delicious with a dark sauce that is a combo of Mole and Salsa. It now has become my favorite sauce. The Mole flavor is dominant but not overpowering. There are several lunch selections to choose from with Speedy Gonzalez ($6.99), Chimichanga ($7.50), Taco Salad Fajita ($7.99), Burrito El Mezcal ($7.99), Fajita Quesadilla ($7.99) plus many other choices. The most expensive lunch is just $7.99. The regular menu has the standard Mexican options we've seen at most restaurants but with El Mezcal touch. Salads, Appetizers, Vegetarian Plates, Taco Salads, Enchildas, Tacos, Burritos, Specialty Steaks and Chicken options and Fajitas. The atmosphere is warm and colorful with the usual, colorful booths with scenes on them. My server was very busy but he made it to my table in 5 minutes. I ordered my drink which took a little while to arrive but when it did I placed my order. Lunch arrived in a timely manner. The server, and a couple others checked on me often and answered several questions I had. I'd like to return soon for the Chili Relleno since the sauce was exceptional and exactly what I enjoy. read more

However, my friend and I each had one. By the time our steak fajitas came, OMG!!! The portions were huge. This was a lunch special!!! Your movies worth and tasty. I'd say, "This is the place to be for good food at a reasonable price. They take pride in their food, friendly, and very attentive. There is a little language barrier, but they take steps to make you happy and will talk to manager or owner? They are very accommodating. The ambiance and decor of their restaurant is wonderful! We went to 3 of our favorite Mexican restaurants for our Cinco de Mayo dinner but were turned away with waits up to 1 hour for a table. On our way home, we spotted El Mezcal - a restaurant we'd never been to. From the outside it appears small, but it is a rather large place upon entering. We were seated immediately and a waitress quickly took our drink order. The menu is quite large and the prices are reasonable. It was a pretty loud setting - perhaps due to the Cinco de Mayo crowds. It will be interesting to see what the noise volume is like on a regular evening. Chips and salsa arrived with our drinks. We received our food within 15-20 minutes of ordering. The food came out hot and the portions were plentiful. I ordered the choripollo - a chicken breast topped with chorizo sausage, onions & mushrooms and cheese sauce accompanied by guacamole salad, rice& beans and flour tortillas. My wife ordered a combination dinner with one burrito, one enchilada and rice & beans. Both meals were very flavorful - we would order them again. All in all, we were pleasantly surprised and we'll visit El Mezcal again for another meal some night. read more

I have been to El Mezcal twice in the past couple of weeks. I've rode past this place several times and finally decided to give it a try. The outside doesn't look too hot and that was one of the reasons I was hesitant to go. When you walk in its actually very nice. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and we got our chips and salsa within a couple minutes. Sergio and a lady helped our table...they were amazing. The food came out pretty quick and ir was nice and hot. I got the quesadilla Guadalajara and im.not sure what it's called me friend got but we ate everything. I thoroughly enjoyed both visits and will definitely be back when we went last night there was a party of 12 who ordered right before us and out food still came out quick and hot read more

Visited on 18 Feb for the first time. (Keystone) Ordered 2 hard shell tacos w/ shredded beef, a cheeese enchilada and a side of rice from the a-la-cart menu, along with a soft drink. The tacos were ground beef - that's a SIN where I come from! I didn't send them back, but the waiter did repeat "shredded beef" to me upon ordering. Meat was seasoned. Enchilada and rice were good. El Mezcal is walkable from work so we frequent there during lunch regularly. The menu is extensive, and I've never had a bad meal here. The food comes out fast and the servers are good about keeping drinks refilled. Its a perfect lunch spot if you only have an hour but still want to sit in to eat. This building has housed a number of establishments over the years. The most recent switch came after a brief shutdown of the previous restaurant and a re-opening under this new name. I hadn't been here when it was under its most recent previous name, so can't say whether it seems the same or not. The parking lot was eerily empty when we arrived at 6PM on a Saturday night, but after a brief discussion, we opted to give it a try. The decor that greets you is very bright and colorful. Pretty much every inch of the tables, chairs and walls are decorated. The chips and salsa are complimentary and were fresh and tasty. I went with my usual choice for first visit to a new Mexican restaurant, the carne asada tacos. The flavor of the meat was good, and the pico de gallo was fresh. The assortment of hot sauces on the table were good for adding a bit of heat. The beans were standard Mexican-American fare, and totally fine. For dessert, I had the yes-I-am-aware-this-is-not-authentic-Mexican dessert, fried ice cream. It was done quite well with a good balance of crunchy coating to creamy ice cream, whipped cream, honey and chocolate sauce. The prices are crazy low. The entire bill for two with two entrees, two desserts and two soft drinks was $30. Service was fast, and our server did check on us periodically to see if we needed anything. More people did come in later, but it was still very quiet for a Saturday night. There were a few families here; it seems like it would be a good place for families to come with kids. They'd love the decor, there's no wait for a table, the food is good, inexpensive, and comes out fast. read more

Always freakin' good! This was my second visit and I very satisfied with my meal. The Mexican decor is so fitting for this restutant. There is a water fountain feature at the entrance of the restaurant and tall glass ceiling with festive streamers floating throughout the space. The waiter was super nice and the food came out very fast. Didn't have to wait long at all. I ordered the Mexican Pizza stuffed with sauteed onions, mushrooms, green peppers, chicken, shrimp, grilled steak smudged between two flour torillas. Whoa! What a mouth full! It was seasoned with a n exotic blend of herbs and spices. It def met the taste factor requirement. The only thing I would change is to request for the torilla be toasted or grilled. Food is ok but staff is rude, literally had waiter follow me to my car to give my tip money back because he didn't think it was enough..... Stopped in for late lunch and beer. Combined cost $18.40 only had $20 bill on me. Beer was $5. Waiter brought me change telling me to keep it. I said that it was all I had and left on table.....this guy than proceeds to follow me to car wanting me to take the $ back . I said keep it . It is all the cash I have. If you chose to eat here bring more cash or eat across the street at El Rodeo ....better food and people. read more

Great authentic mexican food, moderately priced for most dishes as well. The salsa is really good and homemade! Always nice to have chips/salsa while u wait for food. The enchiladas and burritos are really good and cooked to order. The Quear is great too. Staff is ok, kind of awkward figuring out how to pay after getting the check bc some waiters take your card and others make you go pay up front, never really know what to do exactly. Only 8-12 per person for a meal isn't bad tho for great tasting mexican cuisine . Updated this bc I returned one night @9:30 and they close @10:30p and they all seemed annoyed we came. When we asked for more chips and salsa they said it was put away but they'd try. That was awkward, don't stay open late if your gonna be angry when ppl show up an he before closing. And we ordered just 2 bean burritos and a small cheese quesadilla. And they whole time we were eating they were mopping around us and so we got to smell floor cleaner trying to hurry and finish. I LOVE it here! The staff is incredible and my experience is always a good one. I love practicing my Spanish and they are always happy to let me. I love their tacos with chorizo. You have the option of getting them with cheese between the two tortillas and that's my favorite. They have a spicier salsa than what they serve with the chips and it is SO good! Their carne asada is also delicious. On Saturday nights they have Latin dancing (salsa, bachata, merengue, etc.) and that's always a great time. It's $10 at the door to get in and they open up both sides for dancing. One side usually plays reggaeton and the other plays everything else. It's a nice balance. read more

My favorite part is the lunch menu that has a variety of choices! They also have a meal and drink of the day that's always discounted. They service is fast and you'll never be hungry as chips and salsa are in abundance. While lunch is my favorite I've been here for dinner as well. I have been several different times of day and service has been amazing, whoever and whenever! They have the best fajita's ever! Now I do wish they offered grilled pineapple like Puerto Vallarta does, but they are good enough to forgive them for that. They have amazing beer and Margaritas specials everyday. Super cute inside with brightly colored decor, paintings and theme. It wasn't too loud, and service was prompt. The food wasn't overly great, but probably average for an Americanized Mexican meal. It came with free chips and salsa, and then I ordered the chimichangas, which were okay but not great. The menu was fairly standard - all run of the mill Americanized options, but nothing really interesting or exciting. I would have rated this experience higher if not for the server I had. Several times he touched my shoulder and called me beautiful or sweetie. He clearly also wasn't paying attention and brought another table's dessert to me. I haven't been here to dine because Mexican isn't my top choices of food to eat but decided to check it out because for some odd reason, I was craving it. The food was not bad at all. We were served the typical chips and salsa. We had the Pollo la Parrilla, taco salad fajita, and shredded chicken soft taco. The restaurant are reasonably priced. My SO and I spent roughly about $40 and that's with tip included! I would dine here again. FYI, if you have a love of salsa dancing and the night life, they have a side of the restaurant that turns into one. I've actually been here for salsa and it was fun! Can't t give zero stars. I wish I could. We ordered our food. The menu description of their chili rellenos failed to mention it is covered in mole sauce. I mean drenched. My husband hates mole. Asked for it to be re-done without sauce. The waiter said yes but we'd have to pay for both. He was not even a little bit polite. We got up and walked out. I love the atmosphere. The olde Mexican mansion and the colorful motifs...makes a clean restaurant. I had a house margarita which was very smooth with good tequila; not sweet but very smooth! I had the shrimp chimichanga! The shrimp was spicy....I like that....the sour cream was nice to counter the spice! The entree was accompanied with pico de gallo, Spanish rice and retried beans! Good restaurant. Server was terrific - very nice guy. I ordered a large queso blanco (one of God's finest creations on this earth) bowl for about $5 with the complementary chips. The queso bowl was enormous. I could have swam in it. On Sundays, they have $32 domestic drafts for cheap ($4 or $5...can't remember which). El Mezcal is a family restaurant, but there is a side room with a bar and what appears like it could be a dance club. The side room was empty during dinnertime on Sunday, but maybe El Mezcal gets down after hours. I ordered a chimichanga special that had two chimichangas for $10. Way too much food for one person! I should have taken one of the chimichangas home, but they were so good that I ate them both right there. I'm a disgusting human being. read more

Bad experience. I was alone and got seated in the back behind a large party. Took forever to get the food. It was obvious that it sat before it was delivered. There was an issue that caused me not to be able to eat it and after 15 minutes of not getting checked on I got up and tracked someone down to show them the issue. Since the rest of my food was cold waiting to resolve the issue. I asked for the check. Never asked if I wanted the meal replaced. They did say I did not have to pay. Whatever. read more

The restaurant has ample space for a larger group and plenty of seating to go around. They even have a separate bar area for night life later in the evening. They food is always yummy and served fast. The salsa has a little bit of a kick (in a good way). They have all of your favorites and various lunch and dinner specials. I typically always get the chicken fajita which are especially yummy here! I went outside the box on my last visit and tried a burrito Guadalajara! it was awesome as well! Worst customer service of any restaurant in Indianapolis. The staff is rude. The drinks are disgusting - they replace the liquor in the bottles with cheap stuff. Just had another fantastic meal at El Mezcal. This is our favorite Mexican restaurant in Indianapolis. The food is excellent, and their prices are very reasonable. The restaurant does not skimp on the amount of food offered, so prepare to either be very hungry or to take a go box home. The quality of their menu offerings is outstanding, we have never had a bad meal there. The servers are great and very attentive. It's a bar, it's a Mexican restaurant, it's a burger and wings joint, it's a steak house. Service was fast and the food came out made to order and tasty. Biggest gripe was the nickle and dime. Everything was extra. Chips and salsa extra but it wasn't mentioned when we were asked if we wanted it. Fajitas were good but you only get two tortillas and have more than half the plate left but more than two tortillas is extra which was ridiculous.
