Dr. Giles did a great job examining my eyes. I liked his machines and software too because they ran lots of tests without drops or blowers. He explained what they meant on-screen. I don't know about most people but ever since I past fifty my eyes seem to change early. I have been in need of a new pair of glasses for so long but have avoided it because it's time consuming but I had a friend recommend Dr. Hixson from La Mesa Vision care and bit the bullet and drove from my home in Ramona to his office. When in walked in the receptionist gave me the paperwork and was welcoming and very helpful. Then I did some pre exam things with another very sweet staff member and was told I could go ahead and look for the type lenses I would like. The selection was enormous and they had so many posh styles. I think I tried on half of their inventory and found some super cute styles. The Dr. Called me in as I was getting through perusing. As he was doing his job we had a great conversation I could hear the passion for his work coming through in our conversation. Dr. Hixson was, funny, charming and an excellent communicator. He explained how my eyes had changed and where to go from here. I appreciate the time he spent explaining things and it was nice to not be rushed like some Dr.s do. After he completed his exam the office ladies fitted my glasses and ordered them then and there. They were patient when I changed my mind several times and were quite gracious. When you're in need, you're at the mercy of those who'd help - or not. In the midst of an overwrought relocation out of Kalifornistan, I found myself in need of emergencyish attention to my eyeballs. Having driven past this office about 1000 times, I figured I'd send up a flare and request assistance. The doc and company behind the counter were quick on the uptake and diagnosed my situation pronto, and had a remedy close at hand. I'm still able to see like a regular human - literally - because of Dr. Hixson. People usually tell you "Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things", but I'm going to tell you that when small things matter, they're not small. Folks in La Mesa should count their blessings that they can still obtain real personal service like I was provided at La Mesa Vision Care. read more

Pam was very Helpful with the Preliminaries, explaining what we were doing at each machine, making sure everything was Just Right. Next Dr Hixson exhibited His expertise with my problematic Vision (Irlen Syndrome) taking the greatest Care to get everything Correct. I knew right away that I was not at a Business that was Just there to Sell me Glasses! I am Super Impressed and Happy I found La Mesa Vision CARE! I would not recommend this business to anyone with the current front-end staff in place. Dr. Hixon is awesome, but the office staff not so much. I came in mid-2021 for an assessment, and we decided I'd get glasses in 2021 and contacts in 2022. I was told my benefit was per calendar year, not every 12 months. I came back with my trial contacts a year later and went through a series of different trial lenses. When I came in with my second set of trial lenses 13 months after my original appointment, I was told I'd need a new comprehensive exam given it had been over a year (had not been told this). I explained the above and was told that Dr. Hixon waived the exam. No mention was made of a separate "contact lens fitting/follow-up" exam that would be billed for $60 given it had been over a year. My impression was I would not be charged. I was then surprised to get an invoice for both a comprehensive exam AND a "contact lens fitting/follow-up." They removed the comprehensive exam since it was not rendered, but the office manager blamed their staff for not relaying the other charge to me. I escalated to my insurance who agreed that technically they could charge the $60 for the fitting/follow-up since it had been over 12 months. So I reluctantly paid. Was misled and the fact that the office manager blamed the staff person who scheduled my appointment for not being forthcoming with the charges I'd incur lacks basic honesty and integrity. At least own up to the mistake. Plenty of offices nearby that I'll check out next time I need glasses. read more

If you have a high stigmatism RUN RUN RUN down the street to Costco. Where I was forced to get a 100% accurate RX in 45min visit. Between the 2 yea-hoos on staff I got 4 or 5 Rx's that simply were worthless. I wasted at least FIVE ONE HOUR visits getting them too. After I returned with my Costco Rx (which I had them do 2 pairs of glasses so I know the Costco RX was perfect) to have this place do a pair Alain Mickley frame Costco would not do, they F'd that up TOO! I had them pull the RX in my file I brought & had them verify it was wrong, to which I had them redone for a final pair. So to recap, I lost several hours of my life and over 300$ if you add up all the gas and first worthless pair of glasses. If they attempt to use the stupid worthless old school happy potter eye glasses tool instead of the standard one you hold your face up to, RUN! Thank God I didnt buy any frames. ABSOLUTELY DESTROYED any possibility of doing something correct & I never released the Kraken which was hard not to do. 7-3-2023 read more

While our situation is a little different, La Mesa Vision Care is amazing. I am legally blind with Retinitis Pigmentosa and was directed to Dr. Hixson through the Department of Rehabilitation. My appointment was this morning and after 30 years of being made fun of and even laughed at by previous Optometrist, my appointment with Dr. Hixson today was the best I've ever had. Hands down! He was extremely knowledgeable in low vision, and my condition. In addition he was courteous, funny and very understanding to my hopes of making the most out of my remaining sight. Dr. Hixson is amazing! If you have low vision or can't see well, I HIGHLY recommend La Mesa Vision Care to you. This is the best optometrist office I've ever visited in my life. Kindness is the most important quality for me in any doctor's office, and everyone here is so wonderfully nice, from the front desk ladies to the doctors to the master lens crafter in the lab. Efficiency is the second most important thing to me and LMVC has NAILED it every time. They're always on the ball, they get things done right, there's enough staff to make things run smoothly. They seem to get along and work together as a happy team. Other great things include the easy parking out front and the huge selection of magazines...although they won't make you wait forever in the waiting room like other offices. I am Type I Diabetic and take my eye care very seriously. My Rx changes every year and I have fluctuating vision problems like aural migraines, floaters, dry eyes, light sensitivity, headaches, you name it. I felt 100% confident in the LMVC team, more so than other places where I felt the medical understanding wasn't as supreme. I also appreciate their advanced tech. They introduced me to a retinal imaging technique I've never been offered before. No dilation! The frame selection here is also excellent. You'll find tons of styles and brands and even sports glasses and swim goggles. The turn around time isn't overnight, in fact, it's a little slow, but that doesn't matter to me personally. I just love the experience of receiving care this office and I encourage everyone to visit. read more

These idiots gave a contact lens examination, but could not fit correct lenses. 2 months of time out of work to go back and "try this combination and see how it goes" followed by "you cant drive/read/see in those? hmmmmmm try these and tell me how it goes". As if their high contact lens prices weren't enough they also include plenty of "add ons" to help them increase profits too! DO NOT BUY THEIR PROPRIETARY LENSES!! You will never be able to take your prescription to Costco to get a decent price. Had to go to another eye doctor who fitted correctly the first time. Good luck working with the billing chick or Audrey when you want your money back. She just says "I'll look into that and get back to you". Dr. Hixson was my eye doctor for many years through college and beyond. He is a sweet, great man and his front office is run by one of my favorite ladies, Audrey. She's British and used to leave me the best messages on my parent's answering machine to remind me of my upcoming appointments. Dr. Hixson runs his business as "La Mesa Vision Care." You can find it on the corner of Normal and La Mesa Blvd. It used to be a 7-11 way back in the day, but seriously that was like 20 years ago. They have their own parking lot so finding a spot is a breeze. The office is quite large. They have an extensive selection of glasses here. Dr. Hixson's office is run by appointment only and I believe that he is closed every other Saturday? But if you have an emergency, feel free to drop in so you can get assistance. The only reason I stopped coming here is because I live in LA. But for the first 6+ years or so that I lived up here, I still made the drive down to La Mesa for my eye care. All that and Dr. Hixson is a fellow Scottie from Helix High! So support our awesome, local alumni and come in here! read more

I visited La Mesa Vision today (07/06/09) with the idea that something was wrong with my vision (or not.) I'm 28 and have never had an eye exam and wanted to see if I was all good. Per a recommendation from a really great friend, I called them up and gave them a try. They were extremely nice over the phone and after hearing my concern about getting an appt, they squeezed me in about two hours later. The front desk ladies were exceptionally nice and made signing in and working with my insurance easy. The pre exam was simple and fast and within 15 minutes of entering the doors, I was working with Dr. Hixon. He is a wonderfully nice person who is well spoken and friendly. He made it very comfortable and a delight to actually be there. I highly recommend going to La Mesa Vision as it was an overall fast, friendly and easy-going experience. 5 stars!! read more

I can see! After having several exams elsewhere, I finally had an optician that took his time and offered a solution. I've been putting off having cataract surgery for two years to the point of very blurred vision. Other exams would just hurry me out the door and say tough luck, you need surgery. I'm petrified to have it done so when Dr. Hixson suggested he could help I was thrilled. I've never had an eye exam like this one. People: Exceptional service from staff and doctors. They treat you like family. Doctors are amazing; it was like talking to a friend, not a stranger. Very genuine and not pushy into trying to sell you something you don't want. Frame selection: Outstanding, a little pricey, but are all high quality brand name lenses. Definitely worth it. La Mesa vision care is one of the best places that I have been to since I became visually impaired almost 2 years ago. Although I have some great doctors at scripts and I've also seen doctors at the California retina associates in Chula Vista the treatment that I received from doctor hickson was amazing. He made me feel like I had so much hope in order to go back to work and stay as a part of the everyday working class here in this country. Doctor hickson prescribed glasses that are helping to sharpen the little bit of visions that I have and he also let me play with some magnifiers and then referred me to a wonderful rep who is going to provide me with the rest of the tools that I need in order to get trained to get back into the workforce Instead of discouraging me like a lot of doctors have about trying to get back to work he encouraged me and was very happy to hear that I said that I could do my job even though I don't have a lot of vision.
