I ordered glasses recently and was told they would take 7-10 days to arrive. It's been over two weeks and I've called the and have been given wrong ETAs and no answer to when they'd come in even though it had been past the time for them to have arrived. So I went here three years ago and had a great experience. Regrettably I decided to go to one of those "buy 2 pairs for $99" places for my last eye appointment and boy, have I learned my lesson. The difference was amazing (personal and professional at LMVC versus someone letting a computer do everything at the other place). I just finished an appointment today and I don't think I'll go anywhere else again. Here you feel welcomed and the appointment experience was top notch. I could tell Dr. Hixson was more than knowledgeable, he took the time to make the appointment a personal experience. I have been going to La Mesa Vision Care for roughly 31 years and will keep going until they close, which I hope is never. Dr. Hixson is a wonderful optometrist and person to deal with, for your glasses and he really is a low vision specialist. my family & I have been coming to La Mesa Vision Care / seeing Dr. Hixson for years. the staff is super friendly, knowledgable, and in my experience, not pushy. but i've never tried to order contact lenses, so I can't attest much to that. they have a vast selection of frames ranging from Coach, Burberry, Ray Bans, to Maui Jim's. ultimately, though, I decided to order frames from another company (I had my heart set on them months before). all in all a great little place! read more

Both Dr. Giles and Hixson are wonderful to work with. Prior to me having vision issues I had taken both of my children there for different reasons. I recently had to start wearing contacts, and the entire process has been smooth. Dr. Giles really seems to care about making sure I get the contacts that fit my lifestyle. Their customer service needs major improvement. Called during their business hours and got their voicemail. Never received a call back. Called back the next day and someone picked up but they were not helpful at all. I'm on my mom's insurance and she lives out of town so most places don't recognize the name. When I told the employee my insurance he immediately said they didn't take it. I asked if he could check for me (this situation has happened several times before and once they look my insurance shows up) and he once again immediately said they didn't take it because he didn't know of that insurance... Sure enough I talked to two other Optometrists and while they were unsure at first a quick call proved that my insurance can be used at any doctor I choose. Long story short they lost a client and gained a bad review but sometime didn't have the customer service skills to do a check. read more

I do not recommend this place. I've been going to the eye doctor since I was 4 years old and I have never had an issue with ordering contacts or being charged for something I didn't want. At my eye appointment I refused getting the screening on their newer equipment that checks for glaucoma but insurance does not cover it. They did not honor my decision and said that the eye Doctor wants all of his new patients to have it done. I am a healthy 30 year old and my eyes were fine, there was no need to have it done but I was forced to anyways and it costed me $30 out of pocket. I tried ordering my contacts through 1-800-contacts but my eye doctor would not give them my prescription because he said he only tested me for my eye glasses prescription the first visit which would force me to come in for another appointment and pay money for the contacts prescription. I have never had an issue with any eye office giving 1-800-contacts my prescription. This place is a rip off and I was unhappy with their service. read more

My family and I made appointments as soon as our insurance became effective. We spent about 3 hours by our own choice in order to fit myself, my husband, and our 13 month old in for our appointments in one visit, as well as choose glasses for my husband and for myself. I so appreciated how friendly the entire staff was to all 3 of us, mainly to my daughter who was already tried upon arrival. Dr Hendrix could not have been quicker with his exams, but most appreciated was the fact he took the time to explain each detail to us as well as happily got the baby in and out. My sweet girl had a few crying moments, and generally during those times would not go to anyone. I was shocked to come out of my exam and hear she had gone with 2 of the staff members as if they had been friends all along. The woman who helped my husband and I choose our glasses was about the most patient straight forward person I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with! She took the time to watch as we both tried 10+ pairs on, told us her thoughts as well as allowed us our own. She then helped cut any cost she could to make the glasses affordable as well as customized to our needs, and assisted us with payment options. I have no problem with the eye doctor, which is why I didn't give them 1 star. However, I have an issue with their staff. I stopped in about 20 minutes before closing to get a copy of my daughters prescription. They said the doctor was to busy at the moment and that I could stop in tomorrow to pick it up. When I got there the next day they said they accidentally put it in the mail. I told them I needed it now because I was on my way to Costco to see if I could find them cheaper. After waiting a few they gave me the prescription. We got to Costco and was working with the vision lady who was trying to help us find a generic version of the prescription in her book. It wasn't listed so we called the doctors office and the same lady with the English accent that gave me the prescription was very rude and told me that they were a custom brand exclusive to their office only! That would have been nice to know 10 minutes earlier when I was just in their office. I probably would have just ordered them then. But no, they let me drive to Costco knowing that the prescription was useless anywhere else. I was tempted to just have my daughter get an eye exam at Costco but I decided to let it go. The quoted me $45 for a 90 day supply, and that was only about $10 more than Costco so I told them to go ahead and order them. Then when the contacts arrived my wife went to pick them up and the price suddenly jumped to $90. When we told them who quoted the price they just said oops, sorry, she should have told you $90. My wife ended up buying only 45 days worth since by this time my daughter was on her last pair. She told them that we would have to find another eye doctor. The funny thing is nobody tried to offer a discount or do ANYTHING to keep from losing our business. They would rather lose 2 customers (my self and my daughter) than attempt a bit of customer service. They are misleading, and manipulative, and have no customer service skills. Other than that they often close 30 minutes early without notice, which is also frustrating. Can they not just stick to their posted hours? read more

My 82 year old mother has macular degeneration (dry) that has progressed for 10 years or more. Dr. Hixson originally evaluated her as a candidate for a surgical intervention, but when that didn't work out currently due to issues outside Dr. Hixson's control, we returned to see what he may be able to do to help in this low vision situation without surgery. Dr. Hixson is incredibly patient, knowledgeable, and informative. He takes all the time my mom needs to understand his evaluation and recommended treatment. He was able to try several treatment modalities before determining which ones were likely to work best for her. Although Medicare doesn't cover the equipment or glasses that were prescribed, we are fortunate that Mom can afford to move forward with trying all this out. Dr. Hixson's genuine concern for his patients is evident in his whole approach. We are fortunate to have found him, and are grateful for his knowledge and treatment. More patients need to know about this incredible resource for low vision adults. I am confident that the treatments we are undertaking will make a big difference in Mom's life, and enthusiasm in her activities. read more

Dr. Hixon office filled my autistic son's glasses with the wrong prescription. He wore these for a year. (he is mostly non-verbal and unable to communicate hey mom I can't see) The school kept saying he couldn't see but I was assured that the prescription was correct that Dr.Hixon wrote. I took my son to another eye doctor and they tested his lenses. That's how we found out he couldn't see with his glasses. When I went back to LA Mesa Vision they confirmed oops the wrong lenses were put in. I asked what they would do and Dr Hixon said they would give him a new pair. La Mesa Vision doesn't accept my insurance anymore. When we went back Dr. Hixon offered a second opinion evaluation for $45. I said ok. When I asked about the new glasses Dr. Hixon said yes but then said he couldn't remember what discount we discussed. I said none. He said they would give him new glasses. He said oh no. You misunderstood. I will give you a 40% diacount. I offered to keep my son's old frames and just have the lenses replaced for free. He said no. What....wait... This place did not give me what I thought I paid for with insurance and after a year of bad vision I can purchase the correct ones at a 40% discount? Are you kidding me? They mess up and I still have to pay.....again? I said know and that I would like a refund of my copay. They said the office manager would call me back as she is the only one who can approve. I have called 4 days. She is too busy, she is in a meeting. This is total BS. What a rip off. I guess I will just have to get louder for my refund........ They admit they messed up, wouldn't apologize and oh by the way if you want the correct prescription you have to pay 60% of the cost? Wow I guess they figure autistic people don't have the same rights....... read more

I used to come here to get my glasses. The service is nice but there is not a lot of nice styled frames to choose from. I got my prescription sunglasses here and I had to choose from a small variety available. I don't like the style of sunglasses I ended up with but it was the only not so hideous one there. Also my doctor had the worst breath ever. He should've chewed some gum or breath mints. When you're working on a patient that closely, you should make sure your breath isn't kicking. I also did not like that he made my prescription way too strong. I always got headaches when I wore my glasses. I thought that was how it was supposed to be for the first couple of days because my eyes were getting used to them. They never went away. The optometrist didn't like using modern technology to measure your eye sight, he used old school methods that involved different lenses that he placed over each eye. I don't like that method. I would rather use the computerized one. It reads my presciption better. I have since changed my eye doctor to the another one in Lemon Grove. read more

Nothing special, its just a regular nice eye doctor with staff that seemed kind of fake. I wanted to try out a real private office, to see how different it was from the walmart or lenscrafters that I've gone to but my glasses took over 2 weeks to come back even though it looked like they had their own lab in the office. Don't get me wrong, it was a nice big office, but that's about it. I had a prescription pair of ray ban sunglasses that I got from lenscrafters and the girl was pretty rude about saying how she never heard of prescription ray bans and had to confirm it with another staff member to believe me; I know she didn't mean to be rude, but it just left a bad taste in my mouth. The same girl was also trying to help me pick out glasses even though I already found the ones I wanted, she kept saying they weren't very fitting on my face, but I ended up spending about half an hour looking through other glasses and ended up getting the ones I picked, seemed like a big waste of time. I'd honestly rather go to lenscrafters so I could get my glasses in one day, regardless of pricing. I think that's what I'll do next time. read more

I had a billing issue which was resolved quickly, but I still think the practice of charging the customer ahead of time before they actually purchase contact lenses is slightly unethical. Obviously, it is the consumer's duty to stand up for him or herself and dispute these charges, but not everyone will do that. I was first billed $100 at my initial visit for contacts that I 'was going to buy' even though I had made it clear I wasn't sure about purchasing any. Then I got a bill in the mail with an $85.00 charge for contacts that I hadn't requested or purchased. A phone call quickly resolved the issue, but I still think they need to rethink their billing practices. Please check your charges if you go to this establishment. read more
