My wife and a good friend of ours enjoyed another delicious and filling lunch at La Milpa yesterday. La Milpa is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the area. Their food is flavorful and delish. Their portion size is very good. The chips area also really good, as-is their two salsas. The chips area nice and crunchy and they will refill them if you ask. The two salsas compliment each other well. One is a Pico de Gallo, which has the right amount of spice to it. The other is tomsto sauced and fairly spicy. Our friend enjoyed a Small Combo #4 (Tamales, Salad, Rice and Beans). My wife had a Small Combo #6 (Chicken Burrito, Salad, Rice and Beans). I enjoyed a Chicken Chimichanga with Salad, Rice and Beans. They aren't shy with the amount of food they give you. I always end-up taking my leftovers home to enjoy later. As always, the service was quick and friendly. The restaurant was fairly busy, but they always serve your food quickly. The restaurant was quiet, since we were able to have a nice conversation. The food is very good, which is why I've continued coming here. However, the service was disappointing during my most recent visit. My husband had mentioned concerns about the service before, but I hadn't personally noticed any issues until today. In the past, I usually visited with my Mexican family. This time, I came with my husband, who is not Mexican, and I noticed that our server seemed to overlook him unless he was actively placing an order. The most surprising moment was when she removed his plate before he had finished eating. That really caught me off guard and left us feeling awkward. La Milpa has been around for years and I've been there quite a few times but just recently tried their menudo and OMG it is amazing! I just went yesterday with my mom and this morning I was considering going back for more! When it comes to certain dishes, I am picky and menudo is one of them. But their menudo is full of flavor, the tripe is so tender and they don't charge extra for hominy! The waitress was very attentive and nice. She came to refill our coffee and asked if we needed anything else a few times. We never felt like we needed to flag her down because she would come check on us. I had the carnitas plate. It came with a large salad and your choice of dressing. I went with ranch. The plate included your typical Spanish rice, refried beans and two tortillas of your choice. I went with flour. The food seemed generic and I was pretty disappointed in the carnitas. It tasted bland and didn't have that distinct fatty flavor of pork. Decent basic Mexican restaurant. I like that it has two things I crave that are not found in all Mexican restaurants: tamales and sopapillas. The tamales are only pork, and you can get one on a dinner plate with rice and beans. (You can also get two, but only the very hungry will need more than one.) The tamale has creamy masa, maybe a bit too much, but is reasonable in the quantity of meat. Rice and beans OK. The sopapillas come four large ones on a plate, and prove to be puffed up bread without the hollow space inside that a sopapilla should have; consequently there's no good place to put the honey (which does come with). Cute family owned restaurant, perfect for casual dining. Plenty of parking, good location in central Milpitas. They had several vegetarian options which I appreciate. I had cheese quesadillas and veggie burrito. I shared them with a friend and it was perfect amount of food for us and pricing was fair for the quantity. The burrito was lacking flavor and definitely needed a little boost from the salsa. Quesadilla was good, nothing extraordinary but was satisfying and had good ratio of cheese vs tortilla. I went here with my fiancé after a recommendation from one of our teachers when we mentioned we liked to get Mexican food. It's a nice sit-down place with amazing service. The waitress was super sweet and seated us as soon as we walked through the door. The inside of the restaurant was nice and cozy and there was plenty of seating. It's a great place if you want a restaurant where you can sit and talk to your friends at length. I ordered a small combo plate of enchiladas, rice, and beans and my fiancé ordered a chimichanga. They also gave us a complimentary plate of tortilla chips and salsa, which had a nice kick to it. I usually eat Mexican food at places where tacos are $3, so the prices at La Milpa initially seemed steep to me, but the portion sizes were absolutely massive. I think my fiancé and I could have shared a plate if we wanted to and we would have still walked away completely full. The food was amazing though and my sisters thought the leftovers I brought home were great even though they ate them a day later. Food was great. Way more options than a typical taqueria. You get most of a traditional Mexican menu. I think it was missing maybe like sopes. But that could be a regional thing. The milanesa portion was huge and tasty. It was made with lomo de puerco or pork loin. I got an enchiladas Rojas de queso. There are no tomatoes or canned sauce. It tasted authentic to me. Made of dried red Chiles. Maybe guajillo or California Chiles. Not sure the specifics. But it was tasty. I tried the carnitas from my kids plate and they were good. The service was good. Definitely a zero star place. Not kid friendly and extremely rude service. Never supporting this business again. This restaurant has been here for years and has a lot of support from families who have been coming here for years. Most of the customers are senior citizens so I think the staff is used to working slower because they could not handle multiple tables or remember orders. Even being patient and not saying anything they were still rude because they couldn't handle the stress for having multiple customers. It's sad to see the service so arrogant and rude. They don't deserve the loyal customers who come there when there's so many better Mexican restaurants with great food and hard working good people. I don't go out to eat to be treated like I need to leave immediately. The food was also bad it was over cooked and meat was hard. No flavor to the sauce or salsas. Beans didn't taste great. Omelet looked horrible. Plating was crazy bad. Bean dumped on a plate with an omelet thrown, and the omelet was soggy because of the beans. Red sauce on top was bad. The omelet was bland, and not worth it at all. Tortillas were undercooked, and were hard to eat. Drinks were clearly from the brand minute made. It's okay since we were expecting that. The only good things about this place are the service and the chips. Sara brought us a basket of chips with one salsa and a red dip. Came back after many a years since the last visit, and a slight update is in need. On my initial visit, I think I was a bit too snobby and trying to nit-pick on how authentic they could be. I am changing my stance as the recent re-visit got me to mellow out and just enjoy things for what they are, and not what I think they should be. Maybe it's age, but whatever it is, I am fine with it. So the place looks exactly how I remember it, maybe even a bit more worn, as nothing has changed. The service is still great and the food is still solid. Now this isn't the kind of Mexican restaurant that actual Mexicans go to. This is straight up for the suburban masses. But boy are they dialed in on those suburban palates and appetites. Bohemia ($7ish/5*) Okay part of my star bumpage is due to them offering this. It is my favorite Mexican lager and so few Mexican restaurants offer it. I love it with Mexican flavors and textures, so I gotta give them props for serving it. Enchilada & Relleno Combo ($17/4.5*) I chose shredded beef to go inside my enchilada. Very proper with tender Chile Colorado or even barbacoa vibes. They put just enough sauce to moisten it without drowning in it. Though I'm not thoroughly against a drowning enchilada, if the sauce is good, and this most certainly was. The Chile Relleno was okay, a nice hunk of Oaxacan cheese stuffs and is super similar to a creamy mozz. Thoroughly melted with a legit cheese pull. The egg batter was just meh to me, I actually prefer rellenos to be just roasted pepper without a coating, but those are harder to come by. This also was covered in sauce, but can't remembered if it had its own sauce or same as the enchilada. It all just blended together seemlessly, even the beans and rice was all melded in unity on this piping hot plate. So yeah, the flavors hit, the textures hit, and with the pairing of the crisp and cold beer (2 of them without effort), just made for a winning meal, that I can't and shouldn't complain about.
