There are a lot of Mexican pastry choices and that is probably the best way to go if you want something to eat with your coffee. I am not familiar with most of the items they have but found the staff helpful. One uni bathroom that wasn't super clean or fresh smelling. Need to keep up with that! The dulce de leche taquitos were so burnt that all the filling from the inside came out and burnt onto the pan and these very special people thought it would be a good idea to serve it like that. The first time my friend took me here a couple of weeks ago, I was pleasantly surprised with the selection of pastries they had, but I was after their coffee. I ordered the iced tres leches coffee and it wasn't too sweet and I got enough of a caffeine kick to get my day going. One of my best friends and I were walking around Whittier last night and we happened to walk into La Monarca on a whim. I had never been here before and I was sure I had walked right into heaven when I saw mole on the menu and so many coffee options. My friend got two breakfast tacos and later got a pineapple pastry. The tacos were delicious, and he said the pastry was great. I got the chicken mole torta and an iced cinnamon coffee. Mole can be difficult to find, especially good mole. The chicken mole torta at La Monarca was fantastic and I would get it again. I enjoyed the cinnamon iced coffee, and I'd consider it again, but I really want to work my way through that coffee menu! So many options! I didn't have room for any desserts, but that's next on my list too. Especially the dark chocolate ganache cake they have to offer. The decor is bright and cheery. There was gentlemen sitting by me minding his business then some guy approaches him asking if he's gonna buy something if not he had to leave ??? Came here for one specific reason.. get the horchata latte which I keep hearing is really good. Had been to the one in Hollywood and then didn't have any. Came here and they didn't have any! If that's one of their signature items, I don't get why they wouldn't have any of it. So I was very disappointed in that. I ended up getting a slice of horchata cake and it wasn't bad at all. Went to La Monarca to pick up some bread before I went to go visit I my grandmother. I was pleased to see that each bread was wrapped individually, this made me feel comfortable knowing that people didn't touch my bread during this pandemic. My husband had a puerquito and it was not to appetizing (he though it might have been Vegan). I later tried the elote and it tasted old, I couldn't even finish half of it. ABSOLUTELY LOVE LA MONARCA! When my friend mentioned going here I was skeptical because I had already been to a Mexican inspired coffee shop that was a go-to for me. I didn't have room for another Mexican coffee shop in my Yelp arsenal. But oh was I wrong. We arrived early Sunday morning and there was maybe a handful of people seated inside. A quick skim through there menu and I knew I wanted to try there Tres Leches Latte(a favorite at my other go-to spot) and their mollettes, which is basically an open faced sandwich on Bolillo bread with beans and cheese and an option of vegan chorizo to top it off. My order came out to a whopping $7(catch my sarcasm). A large latte plus a food item hardly ever comes out to less than $10 anymore. After ordering, I noticed there display case of Mexican bread that is located off to the side of the cash register. It looked fresh and I knew it would pair perfectly with my coffee. $1.20 for two breads.... I think that's worth it. Our drinks and food were handed off to us fairly quickly and as our time there passed the restaurant started to fill up. Though the restaurant got busy, customers were only passing through for to-go orders. My latte was simply amazing. The creaminess from all the various milks they add into Tres Leches was rich and flavorful. The coffee used wasn't strongly tasting but you could feel the effect of it almost instantly. My mollettes were also perfect. The beans had a good flavor but the star of that dish was the salsa that came with it. It gave it that punch you were looking for. Honestly after visiting La Monarca I CANNOT wait to go back. Really... I might just go right now. They've made me forget about the last Mexican coffee shop I was raving about earlier. read more
