After an amazing day of driving through and exploring the El Yunque National Forest with my girlfriend we saw this place on the side of the road on our way out and I told my girlfriend, Stooop! After I saw the piña colada sign. LMAO at her reaction :D Bro, I swear I can't get enough of them while I am on a tropical island. Anyways. They were closing so she ran up and grabbed me one to go and we shared it on our drive back to Condado. Was it great? No! Was it good? Yes! This is just one of those tourist trap places that sell things that people will buy. TBH: It looked like a cool little spot to chill after a hike plus my gf said the guy who waited on her gave us a hefty pour of rum. Much love to that guy for treating his customers right. Seating here on this roadside eatery on the way home from El Yunque is quite crammed. The place is not super clean. And I squirmed a little when they said everything on their display window "had" to be fried (why???). That said, the service was prompt and polite (if not a bit dispassionate). The chicken shish kebab fresh off the grill was incredible and deserves 5 stars. The tacos were just OK. I felt they were too heavy being double-fried. Overall this isn't a bad choice if you're hungry on the ride home from El Yunque and want to grab a snack. read more

This little roadside eatery was a great place to stop for food after visiting the El Yunque rainforest. Located on a winding road just outside the rainforest, it's probably the only nearby place for a quick bite. Upon arriving, we saw pinchos being grilled and people sitting at the picnic tables enjoying their meals. It's pretty good for what it is -- a quick service restaurant right outside El Yunque National Park. They have the typical Puerto Rican entrees, rice/beans, plantains, and hamburgers. There's also a separate grill station next to the restaurant that serves chicken kabobs ($3/ea). The grill only takes cash - but the restaurant takes cards. I ordered a few kabobs at the grill and some sides at the restaurant. The tables and bathroom facility are definitely low key. In fact, you have to buy something at the gift shop if you want to use the toilet. The kabobs were great. Very flavorful and delicious. Went well with the rice and beans. Perfect lunch before going to the rainforest. Overall: Good choice. read more

I wouldn't even call La Muralla a restaurant as it is little more than a roadside food stand. For food out of a very limited selection consisting of some not very good choices, your best bet is the grilled shish kabob as it seems to be most tasty and best of what they have to offer. All the service ware is paper or plastic and there are usually lineups for orders or making payments. The seating arrangement are horrid, being nothing more than picnic like benches and when you do take a seat it will probably have to be at a table with other tourists. read more

Surpringly good little roadside stand. We had some snacks and cold coconut juice. It was all good. They had a grill with what they called shish-kebab, it smelled good, but we didn't try. Also the gift shop next door was cute and better priced than the stores at the Luquillo kioskos. read more

This place gets stars mostly for location. It's one of the few options right at the entrance to El Yunque and the convenience gets it one star. The other star is for the staff, who were very friendly and helpful. Other than those two pros, I don't have much good to say. The food was horrible. My pork chop was just a sliver of meat covered in salt and my wife's pasteles were both burnt to a crisp with nearly no meat inside. I recommend passing and getting something in town. read more

Came here after visiting the La Coca waterfall in El Yunque. Great place for authentic Puerto Rican food. Dont expect a fancy diner; this is definitely a mom and pop local take out spot. If you are on a diet this is not the place for you. Everything is fried and/or a carb. Who cares though?! You are probably on vacation like me if you visit this place. Treat yourself to one of the shrimp, crab, beef, or chicken tacos, fried cornmeal and cheese, rice and beans, and plantains. There is even the option of fired chicken and french fries for those of you not too adventurous! Finally, treat yourself to the pina colada. Perfectly adequate lunch after a short jaunt in El Yunque... Location: 5 out of 5 This is completely subjective, but the only reason why I was able to go to this place was because I had booked a shore excursion upon returning from a RCCL cruise that visited El Yunque rain forest. I'll admit that this was the only restaurant I saw on the winding road that goes from the main road there (PR-2?) up to the forest. In that regard, it was convenient - but I'm not sure I'd want to trek all the way from Old San Juan or the airport area JUST to eat at this place. Decor: nonexistent, but 5 out of 5. For as many tourists as they probably serve, they haven't spruced things up. I loved it. Simple chairs inside, simple benches outside, and a mangy looking mongrel on the roof. Cleanliness: 3 out of 5 Not bad for the climate. The humidity seeps into the ceiling, and there's a distinct mildew smell in the main dining room, but they obviously try to keep it clean. The unattached bathroom facilities were interstate rest area quality, and the tables were kept clean. No real complaints. Selection of Food: 4 out of 5 If you love fried foods, then you'll be in heaven. Seemingly, almost everything was fried, and then if you order the food, refried. The selections did look good though - a lot of green banana items with meat, some "traditional" food like fried chicken and pork, etc. Upon the recommendation of our tour guide, I got the special, which consists of a pastele with rice and beans. Segue... Quality of food: 4 out of 5 The pastele itself consists of mashed up green bananas with meat (pork, I think) in the middle, wrapped up in banana leaf and boiled for an hour. Of course the whole arrangement is properly seasoned. This item was very tasty, and extremely filling. The rice and beans themselves were quite good - probably the best I've had due to whatever proprietary seasoning that they use. And of course - I had a Medalla Light. Not much to say about that beer - it's like a hybrid between Miller, Coors, and Bud light. Low carbonation though. Pricing: 5 out of 5 Pretty cheap for what you get. We got two of the specials, a Medalla light, and a pina colada for 20 bucks. Portions were large and food was comforting and filling. Overall:4 out of 5 Maybe I'm being too generous, I could have easily given this place a 3 and not felt bad about it. But, because I enjoyed looking at the dog on the roof so much, it's a 4. I mean, it's not haut cuisine, nor will you mistake it as being fast food. The only other Puerto Rican food I've had consists of lechon and mofongo, so I don't have a lot to go by here. However - if you happen to be on a tour van, they'll probably take you here to eat. And honestly, it's actually quite good. read more

Eh.. this place was alright especially when we had only a couple of choices on food places next to the park. I read about it in my guidebook, which was gushing about their fried chicken and how cheap they are. Well I ordered the fried chicken with rice and it was just okay. I live in the south and we know how to do chicken right. This chicken was scrawny with little meat. Then again I am not sure what Puerto Rican chickens look like. Maybe they aren't beefed up on steroids like our chickens in the States. Any hoo.. food was decent, but don't expect a fabulous meal. Stopped here for lunch after a tour of the El Yunque rainforest. Coming after an almost two hour hike, we were truly hungry. This place is more of an eatery than a restaurant. There is a small shish kebab outlet on the side of this restaurant. The kebabs are good though but great. In this restaurant, the food is good although most of it is fried stuff. I had fried chicken with rice and beans and there is little that can go wrong with such a dish. Their service is swift, considering the fact that most of the stuff is readied in advance. The seating arrangements are okay and do not expect to get a separate table for yourself. You may have to share the table with others during rush hour. The prices are low without much compromise on the quality and taste. It is a worthwhile stop after hiking through the rainforest! read more

When I mentioned to my friend Tina that our plans were to hike in the El Yunque Rainforest, she told us we had to stop at this little taco hut at the bottom on the rainforest. She has mentioned that she ordered just about one of everything on the menu and highly recommended it. After spending an afternoon hiking in the rainforest, we found this little gem on our way out of the park. The menu is like no other; freshly made food arranged in a pastry type case. Most items were baked or fried in a golden brown pastry, which made their tacos very different from tacos we're used to eating. Instead of a traditional taco shell, this Puerto Rican dive stuffs the chicken and veggies into a pastry dough. Jason's favorite treat was the sorullos, which translates to fried cornmeal and cheese. Think of it as a long corn fritter with a Velveeta cheese center that is deep fried. Each bite was crunchy and creamy at the same time. I really enjoyed their rice and beans platter, which was the perfect combination of starches one needs after a long hike. The beans were super tender and flavorful since they had been cooking all day long. The rice soaked up the broth from the beans, making it also like a soup. Myself and my girlfriend stopped in here after spending a couple hours hiking and exploring through the cold rain. She had read about them having good pina coladas which we both had wanted since arriving to Puerto Rico the day before. The place is a unique roadside stand style building with various fried food options and a liquor assortment. Staff was very friendly, even offering to make our coladas a bit stronger after we tasted them (which they were pretty good in my opinion). All in all, the food was tasty and unique for fried food (I tried fried mashed potato with meat, a crab burrito, and a cornmeal cheesestick). Beautiful surroundings, with a horrible customer service provided by the owner. My first experience arriving to the place was to be yelled by the owner because even thought many parking spaces were available and clearly labeled for customers I had to park were instructed by him. After ordering food and drinks I headed for the restrooms just to be greeted by more yelling done by the owner because restrooms were just for paying customers. I notified him that we had placed an order already but he rudely yelled that he could not let us use the restrooms until he verified the fact. I suggested to an employee that a system in which they provided a ticket to use the restrooms might avoid any confusions. The employee apologized for the owner's rudeness and informed that they have to endure daily mistreatments. It is sad that people feel entitle to treat others in such demeaning ways. I was hoping for delicious food to mitigate the bad treatment, but it was just overly priced bad cuisine. Overly aggressive! We stopped on our way down from the rainforest which btw is absolutely wonderful. They charge a $1 for the restroom unless you buy something which is fine but when walking up to ask where the restroom was a man was standing in the corner with a few older women and child he aggressively asked for us to pay for something or give him a dollar once again not an issue my friend and I which are females we pointed to our boyfriends and explained that they were buying drinks he let us in and as we were coming out he blocked our way saying the boys were not buying anything while they were line so we pointed and showed him that they were purchasing drinks he blocked us to the point were we could not walk out of the area was super aggressive about getting his dollar to the point that we gave him a dollar then he insisted on another dollar once again in a very aggressive manner we gave him the other dollar and decided not to purchase anything due to their rude/aggressive manner they missed out on us spending money on drinks,food and souvenirs for being disrespectful of our space and as customers. I love the rainforest we come every chance we can but I will never ever stop at this place again. Completely horrendous service!!!!!!!!! read more
