Okay, first off, I rate places based on the type of restaurant/institution it is. Am I going to complain that a local diner didn't offer to hang up my coat, park my car, and use the finest imported fromage? NO. It's a dang diner! That's the idea with La Perrada de Chalo. It's a Columbian spin on American fast food that is a guiltily satisfying good time that's absolutely sure to leave you stuffed. The menu is ridiculously extensive, covering sandwiches, burgers, bowls, and most importantly (to me): Hot dogs. Seriously. These hot dogs are completely out of this world. My absolute favorite thing to get here is the Iraqui hot dog (super size). Sure, it's a regular old unimpressive hot dog. But then it enter the hands of whatever genius artisan craftsman is behind that counter. It's boiled perfectly and served on a toasted bun so that the outside has the slightest crisp while the inside is soft and fluffy. The iraqui is then topped with ketchup, mayonnaise, a smear of smooth pineapple sauce to give an incredible subtle sweetness, sliced hardboiled eggs, and crumbled up potato chips. Yes, you read that correctly, dang crumbled Ruffles or something. It's a freakin' party in your mouth, and a perfect crunch of slight saltiness. I also highly suggest the Maicitos Con Pollo Con Queso; it's a bowl based with chicken meat, sweet corn, sliced cheese, and sauce. Which is probably mayo. But so dang good. Think of it like a salad, but all that annoying healthy green stuff removed, and just meat, corn, and cheese. Mm. The salchipapas is pretty standard, having well cooked fries and sliced hot dog pieces cut to look like little fanning four tentacled octupi. That sounds unappealing, huh? It's good though, swear. The service here is very friendly, but honestly at least half the times I've come, the people behind the counter did not speak English. Luckily, I was either with my Colombian friend or used my broken high school level Spanish to get by. Also, if you order the hot dog (which you will, right?), just accept the fact you will be a disgusting hot mess trying to eat it. It's fine. It's part of the ritual. Just be sure to snag more napkins, because they certainly do not give you enough. read more

Lost in translation. La Perrada De Chalo is a Colombian spin on American fast food. Come with your best Spanish because if you come with my two years from high school, you may end up ordering something you didn't. The menu is vast starting off with desayunos (breakfast) moving on to hamburguesas (hamburgers) and perros (hot dogs) to antojitos (snacks) and other side items (tostones) and combo platters. I settled on the chicken burger mainly because it came with pineapple and I was feeling for something sweet and non meaty. At the register I ordered my piernil which got confused for pernil (the pressed pork sandwich). After going back and forth with the woman at the counter, even pointing at the menu, I still ended up with the pernil. Note to self and others: work on your pronunciation if Spanish is not your first language. My pernil sandwich was actually very good and in my opinion less of a "fast food" option that some of the other items. I was the last to get my food. The rationalization was that they really slow press the bread so that the sandwich gets delivered crispy and thin. It was well worth the wait. The pork was flavorful and the special sauce (cilantro mayo?) gave it an extra oomph. The other items ordered were just as tasty but somewhat of a gut fest. The mini picada (assorted fried beef, chicken, and pork skins with french fries, chorizo and an arepa) would have gone great with a beer. The meats were greasy and charred with bits of crispy skin. The hot dogs, as exhibited by the showy (a hot dog with gol sauce, tartar sauce, lettuce, tomato, pineapple, cheese, bologna, crushed potato chips and ketchup), were one step away from Rutger's fat sandwiches. Potato chips in hot dogs? Now I know what people think when they see hot dogs in Filipino spaghetti. It's a slight variation on standard cultural food. One item that is a must when visiting La Perrada De Chalo are the juices and shakes. I tried the papaya and what one thought was supposed to be passion fruit. I see nothing on the menu that I would know would be the green shake that I had a sip of. Guanabana? Is that guava banana? Again, I am lost in translation. Either way, it was refreshing and tasty. The food is good at La Perrada De Chalo. I just can't see myself going there in lieu of McDonalds. read more

This place has been a favorite of mine for many years. Everything I have tried here has been delicious! My favorites are the Hawaiian style hot dog and burger, which feature crushed potato chips, pineapple sauce, salsa rosada (basically mayonnaise and ketchup), hot sauce and possibly some other stuff I have yet to figure out. They also make the best fresh squeezed orange juice I've ever had. Everything is made pretty much right in front of you and although it may take a little longer than, say, McDonald's, your food is always warm and fresh. La Perrada de Chalo was the third stop on my Jackson Heights food crawl. If you're reading this review you're probably curious about Colombian hot dogs but have never experienced one. These dogs start off like a regular hot dog, but make their way through some crazy sort of reverse-carwash, by which all manner of stuff finds its way onto the dog. I don't mean just ketchup or onions, or even chili-cheese, I mean crazy toppings. Get ready for bacon, eggs, crushed potato chips and anything else conceivable. However, that's not the crazy part. What really sets these dogs apart from others are the sauces that are liberally smothered on top of them (and I mean smothered. Look at the photos, you can't even see the dog). Pineapple, raspberry and apple, to name a few, these sweet toppings give Colombian dogs their distinctive flavors. For someone who isn't used to eating sweet and savory in the same bite (this is different from bacon cookies), it can be a pretty odd sensation. The closest thing I can think of to relate it to is cranberry sauce and turkey on Thanksgiving, but imagine if, instead of the cranberry sauce, you had the raspberry sauce that occasionally shows up on fancy dessert plates. Weird, right? At first it threw me off, but I got used to it by the end of the dog. Although it wasn't bad, I wasn't blown away by it either. Also, these things are messy. It wouldn't be right to go at a hot dog with a fork and knife, so you have to use your hands, which, thanks to the sauces, will get sticky really quick. However, I hear awesome things about cholado, the Colombian drink made with crushed ice, fruit, sweetened condensed milk and more that looks like it could whup halo halo, so once it's warm out I hope to be back to try one. read more

Just got back. This place is pretty amazing (and GRIMY!) Its fast food all the way, though not always fast. We got the Iraqui hot dog (with eggs and crumbled potato chips) this was weird and good. The Mixto (with bacon and apple sauce?!?!?) who even invented that? It was also good. Then we got the mixed meats over french fries. I could have done without that, but if it was 4am (and they say their open that late) and I was drunk, I would get the mixed fried meats again... Their logo looks like it was drawn by a 4 year old on a 30 year old computer, and ask to use the bathroom, the cook has to pull on a string to unlock the door. Pretty awesome. read more

With names like Super Showy and Hawayan burger and Super Especial, you have to try it! I live pretty close to this place and I always see people coming here after the clubs on the weekends. So one day I decided to try it out. I ended up trying the Super Especial burger.... WOW! Either I was just really drunk or its was just a great burger. Needless to say I have been a regular here for a while now and I can't get enough of it. I switch my orders from the Super Especial, Hawayan and the Cuban sandwich depending on my mood but you cant go wrong with any of these orders. I love it that they have potato chips on the burgers! I was totally lost the first time around when I saw it but why get the chips in a bag when you can eat it all at once right? I went here one late night with some family we all order hotdogs, first hotdogs are Huge and there boiled cooked the best way to cook a hot dog is to grill them to get a little crisp second the bread looks like a deli hero bread third the toppings was sloppy. I tried a hotdog that had pineapple mayo 2 fried eggs and potato chip sticks sounded so pleasing I threw it out after 2 bites . Not only that food took forever and there were hardly anyone there. I LOVE perrada. Of course, the original XSTASIS is missed(the burger place that competed with perrada) but perrada is so much better than banana king. The Empanadas are great. I always get the Hawaiian burger or sometype of hot dog. The only thing i hate is that they dont have their sauces in squeeze bottle like at Los Verdes. Theyre very stingy about their sauce, the garlic sauce is 35 cents each. The cashier's and everybody else who works there is pretty rude, the bathroom is always disgusting. I try to avoid using the bathroom while there. Other than that theyre great at whatever time of the day (I'm guilty of eating a burger for breakfast ) but I'm Ecuadorian we dont care what we eat at whatever time of the day :) read more

I paid $30 for a Picada and i didnt receive no cassava, chicharron, and also on top of that they gave me about 8 itty bit pieces of steak and 5 bite size pieces of chicken. Both burgers have a hint of sweet and salty to it. Don't be put off by the odd combinations, they pair well for a good experience. This place is bizarre. The last time I ate food like this I was babysitting the kid across the street and he asked me if he could cook me dinner. Hot corn with melted cheese and crushed potato chips with chunks of chicken. I think Oscar from the odd couple came up with the menu. The fries came topped with hard boiled egg. I'm not kidding. Um, why does it take you a half hour to crush chips and throw them on corn? And why am I paying you so much to crush said chips. I could go to 7/11 buy a hammer and a bag o chips and do it all myself in less time and for a lot cheaper. There was a woman vomiting in the lobby while I was waiting. The Hawaiian hot dog is and has been my go-to. I've been coming here since I was probably 9 or 10 years old (with my parents of course), I'm 22 now and the hot dog has been consistently good. The fruit shakes are TO DIE for. So freaking good! I've gotten multiple flavors over the years and they have all been good. I convinced my friend to get a hotdog from here and now she's hooked. Besides having to brush up on my Spanish to pick up my food, I need to remind myself not to go back. I went to this place on a Saturday night and ordered fries and the double burger. I waited almost 30 mins for my food when someone screamed out my receipt number in Spanish. Based on some reviews on yelp and from friends I guess I expected a lot more. The fries were good but my burger lacked flavor. I appreciated the crushed chips and sweet sauce but the meat was way too salty and was extremely dry.
