Rude service, if you don't like people, don't serve people. The older gentleman is kind and pleasant, the older lady is rude like she hates customers. I bought 3 bags of items. I went back and said it was missed and she told me I must have eaten it. I told her there wasn't enough time to have eaten it. I walked out and went back in. She said I must have given it to someone to eat. I couldn't show any proof it was it wasn't charged bc she printed a receipt that was blank with no transaction information. I paid for a replacement and handed her a $20, she said "smaller bill" and tossed the $20 on the counter. Is it really this necessary to be so rude? I won't go back. It's closed to where I live but the service of other bakeries is superior than this shop. read more

Always fresh breads and cakes. The pink cake here is so fresh and moist. Iced perfectly, and the empanadas are always full of fillings. Cookies are crumbly and much like the ones I grew up eating. They have chocolate and regular milk in the cooler. Ask about the day-old breads at a reduced price. They still are really good. They also will box your goodies if you choose for a small fee depending on the size of the box. They have tortillas, too. It's one of my favorite bakeries. read more

Stopped by on a Saturday around 2pm. There was a short line of folks and they were limiting total customers to about 3 people Max. The pan dulce was fresh and great tasting. The empanada were pretty good with pumpkin filling. Not overalls baked like most Mexican bakery's. The conchas were fresh tasting and semi sweet as one would expect. We also ordered some wedding (Mexican) cookies and cupcakes with pink icing. The glazed donuts with strawberry filling were really good. If you like glazed donuts check them out. They looked very fresh and just covered in icing. All in all I was very pleased with my first visit here. The workers were extremely friendly and bagged the pan dulce separately. Which I appreciated because sometimes it becomes a mess with the different times. I am only giving 4 stars until I go back and try some more stuff. -Rick read more

As they say, "it is what it is". And what it is, is Yummy deliciousness! The name is most certainly fitting. La Popular Bakery is popular! Only 3 folks inside at a time so there are lines at times. It because EVERYTHING looks, smells and tastes fresh. You really can't wrong here. I love me the apple fritters and the kids LOVE their chocolate glazed. It's cash only so that keeps me from spending MUCH MORE than I would. The 4 stars is really about the lack of connection with the ladies taking the orders. We are already behind masks, and there is no menu anywhere, just makes it hard to understand what my options are. But as far as taste and price (Half dozen for $5 something) its 5 STARS! The glazed donuts are my favorite! I go just for those. Everything is usually fresh with the exception of a few times.

Had two conchas, temping empanadas , two pink cakes and assorted cookies. I wish they had prices listed because it's a ski machine and you never get the same price even if you order the same items. It all depends on the cashier. read more

I CANT GET ENOUGH of these types of mom and pop bakeries. I was visiting my friend from out of town and came across this bakery on Yelp. I love this place. I live around d the corner and not being from San Antonio, it was a little intimidating at 1st. Went in once and one of the ladies there checked me out. My total was $2.05. I gave her $3. Because I didn't have the 5 cents, she gave me my dollar back and told me to have a nice day. How many businesses are out there that they would have broken that $1 for the 5 cents. It was ok. Not the greatest. Was glad they were open at 9pm for a late night snack. Saw the good reviews so I wanted to try it out. This was about 20 mins away from my home and I would not go out of my way to go back again. Glazed donuts were good but it is hard to mess up those. Cheesecake square tasted like it needed to have been cold instead of warm. Cheesecake had a weird flavor to it and weird texture. Chocolate cupcake with sprinkles tasted plain and the chocolate wasn't rich. I had gotten about 7 items for about $6. I had gotten a square looking pastry that had a little bit of strawberry filling in it and that was the best tasting thing I had gotten in my lil stash. I didn't want it to end and wish I had gotten more of those. But even though it was better than the rest, it wasn't enough to win me over completely. When i was a kid my uncle, who had a family of six children, used to come over on Sunday's after church to visit our family, who had seven children, and he would always bring enough pan de dulce for everyone. So long before I associated religion with Sunday's, I always associated sweet bread and philanthropy with it. La Popular has been a name in our vocabulary for over 30 years and today my children know it well. Today at 6 am I stepped into the hallowed store to the smell of fresh baked sweetbread and steeped up to the case. Mixed among the rows of conch shells, empenadas, pink cakes, cream horns, semitas, campechanas, and jelly rolls, I chose a few things to take home. I usually don't get doughnuts but since they were fresh I got a couple of glazed and chocolate iced. Pretty close to Krispy Kreme when hot and fresh. Of course no trip to the panderia would be complete without stepping over to the glass annex filled with nothing but cookies. Knowing my daughter and wife's preferences, it is best to just point to the case and say "Yes". May the tradition live on! read more

Took a late night drive the other night and my partners in crime and I decided to take a Bat-turn into La Popular. Alright, maybe not so much as IN TO but TO. They had a variety of breads and cookies such as marranitos, empanadas, conchas, and gallettas. Great dessert! My only complaint was the rude lady who was helping me. When I was ordering she rarely looked at me, and seemed bothered and upset to be helping me out. Not sure if it was the language barrier, which wasn't an issue until the middle of our encounter, but it exacerbated the tension. Won't be returning. I have shopped here for many years and have always enjoyed their pastries. Today, I was very disappointed with them I recently went there to get a large order to take to work. My bill was $38. When I got home, my daughter asked if she could have an empanada and I said sure. We went to my car and opened the box. I was missing 2different cookies that I had ordered. We went back to the bakery and tried to get the rest of the order. The ladies looked at my box and the receipt and were trying to figure it out. She counted the ones I had and one time said the total for the ones I had were $22 then she recounted and said it was $28. Then told me my receipt was right for the order I had. They had 20 min till they were closing and were locking up. Then was told the order I had was now $38 and they would not let me get the cookies I paid for. Very disappointing. read more

I think I'm in love with their chocolate chip cookies....when I crave cookies I stop here. Now don't get me wrong they have lots of great bakery items like pan, cookies and donuts. I have tried almost everything here and have to say I haven't found anything that I didn't like. The people behind the counter are always real nice and their open till 10pm which makes it so convenient for a quick guilty bag of guilty pleasures.
