We have been for birthdays and just family dinner night and each time, the service and food are on point. What stands out about this place is that its ambience is different than the other Claremont establishments. Wow! This place is so delicious, seriously the best tacos we have had in a very long time! Their taco Tuesdays are only $3 per taco and you choose between Ribeye, Street Corn, Carnitas, or Chicken. And they aren't skimpy, the tacos are a good portion and they are on homemade tortillas! The staff is also extremely friendly and attentive, the manager came to check on us and the server was quick! This place gets very busy so it's best to get there for an early dinner, but there is plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors and the vibe is always up and positive! Ordered their chili pineapple mango margarita to start. Margarita was well balanced, and the chili was drenched on the side in a cute artistic way. Sweet but not too strong, good happy hour drink! They have their daily happy hour specials from 3-6 and then 9-close. Wanted something filling but light, decided on the queso fundido and carnitas taco. The cheese dip was yummy, but not too heavy. This is a restaurant of 2 places: up beat inside vibe and relaxed patio vibe. We sat outside on this sunny Fall afternoon. But walking through the inside, we noticed the enticing lighting and upbeat music. The patio was calm, but the service was still attentive. As you can see from my pics, the table service visual is uplifting against the black table tops. We started with the Salsa Flight. Check out my pic of the mini menu that came with our flight. Overall, the salsas were milder than their heat indicator. But, they were all unique and had good flavors with quite the variety for 4 options. We greatly enjoyed mixing the various salsas. Also note the super crunchy and freshly made chips. The salsa left us with tingly lips and running noses: all good. We also shared the Campechano Tacos. There were 4 per serving, and was the right size for us. As you can see from my pic, they were a bit juicy. The tortillas still held up and break apart. The ground meat was flavorful: rich, earthy and savory. The onions were mild and added a great crunch. The side dish of rice and beans were standard fare. My friend and I came upon this place by accident and it was so good! The service was amazing from start to finish. The hostess was very sweet and accommodating, and the waiter was very patient and sweet. The house made chips and salsa were amazinggg. Great way to start the meal. The ceviche was alright. I thought it was watery for my liking. I'm not the biggest fan of mahi mahi, so maybe next time I'd ask for just shrimp if I do choose to order it again. The shrimp fajitas were 10/10. I'm a sucker for good fajitas and this place did a great job with the shrimp and the sauce. The guac and sour cream atop the roasted fajitas wow. For all those who eat halal, the beans have lard btw, so make sure to skip on that! I wish they had black beans w/ no lard to replace the refried beans with. My experience at La Popular was like no other. Not only was the food amazing, but the service was beyond expectations. I came in and right away the host was kind, accommodating me and my family. Came here for the first time for my birthday. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by Fernando whom immediately welcomed me with "happy birthday" since we had a reservation. I ordered the strawberry habanero mimosa and it was absolutely delicious -- the perfect balance of sweet with a subtle kick of heat. We also had the quesabirria and the chicken chilaquiles, and both dishes were cooked perfectly and served warm. The presentation was beautiful, which made the whole experience even better. The food. The food is spectacularly mediocre. Our party shared the following: -guacamole ($11) + chicharrones (+$4) -ahi tuna tostadas ($18 for 2): crispy leeks, chipotle aioli, soy vinaigrette + avocado -al pastor tacos ($15.50): signature live fire al pastor, pineapple, onion, cilantro, lorenza sauce -campechano tacos ($16.50): ribeye, chorizo, chicharrones, lorenzo salsa, guacamole -ribeye tacos ($17): avocado, charred tomatillo salsa -enchiladas blancas ($22 ): cotija, lorenza salsa, guacamole, asadero cheese, red onion, sour cream, guacamole, cilantro Some things were okay good like the tuna tostada - a little mayo-y. And the guac. So there's that. But to be honest, all of the taco meats melded into one single flavor. Despite the individual toppings, flavor wise, I couldn't tell one meat from the other. Additionally, the tacos were very extremely small. The portion of meat is so small that they use one single tortilla. While we ordered some of them in like a combo which made them "cheaper," a single taco entree with 2 tacos with rice & beans is like $15 ++. Not worth the ambiance. Host station is a little testy and unfriendly. The waiting area is also very awkward. If you find yourself waiting, I'd recommend grabbing a drink at the bar. read more

Reservation highly recommended for La Popular CDMX. La Popular is the newest hottest modern Mexican restaurant and bar to the Claremont Village area. Scarce street parking in the area, but my preferred spot is the free Public Parking lot a little north on Yale, above Bonita. I arrived around 6pm on a Saturday evening trying to beat the lunch rush and they told me it would be 75-90 minutes for indoor seating, or right away for hot humid outdoor seating. Bar seating is on a first come first served basis. My predatory senses kicked in and I vulture-d a seat as soon as I saw 2 ladies shifting and about to get up. MayLene D. and I were content with the bar seating since the service was pretty attentive, and you got to watch them make their fancy craft cocktails right in front of you. We started off with drinks. MayLene D. had their Oaxacan Jellyfish ($17) and I had the Desert Rose ($17). The Oaxacan Jellyfish has rum, pineapple, blue lemongrass, coconut cream, and topped with a whimsical lemongrass smoke bubble. My cute Desert Rose was served in a cute cactus cup and it had hibiscus lime infused tequila, mezcal, cinnamon infused liquor, prickly pear, pomegranate and garnished with a toast cinnamon stick and a tasty slice of grilled pineapple. I really enjoyed my drink. Very craft cocktail worthy. As a shared starter, we got the Ceviche ($18) that came with fresh white fish, tomatoes, cucumber, citrus, serrano peppers, red onions and cilantro. It was served with what looks like fresh house fried tortillas. They were on the small side, but the ratio works out if you generously stack your ceviche onto the chips. MayLene D. seemed to really like the balance of the acidity in the ceviche liquid. I really enjoyed the flavors as well. For our entrees, we both went for enchiladas. Please note their enchiladas do not come with a side, so they will ask if you want to add a side of rice and beans or a side salad for an additional charge. MayLene D. had the Campechano Enchiladas ($22) with a side salad ($3) and I had the Chicken Mole Enchiladas ($22) with a side salad ($3). We both opted for the cilantro dressing on our side salads. That side salad was amazing, it had quality ingredients with like a spring mix bas with tomatoes, radish, and avocado. The cilantro dressing was perfect. As for the enchiladas, we were less satisfied. MayLene D. got the majority of her enchiladas to go. I was disappointed with the mole sauce cause I normally really enjoy mole, but this one falls short. The tortilla for the enchiladas were also still tough, filling a little dry. I think this is a cute spot for appetizers and a cocktail, but I don't think I would come back for dinner. It's a bit of a splurge, but definitely nice to try. read more

Our first experience here was great no complaints. Our second time here we had a reservation. We checked in and were told to step aside and wait. Multiple people (white) came in after us and were seated right away. After 15 minutes of waiting I asked the girl at the front desk, even though she saw us standing there waiting in front of her, if our table was ready. Apparently she forgot about us. The food was good however one of the drinks was horrible. Our waiter was really nice and got us comped for the drink. Our third time here we were seated right away. However, we were waiting for over 25 minutes for someone to come and take our order. In the meantime, I was observing multiple white people being seated after us and getting their orders taken before us. I finally went up to a waitress and she was very helpful and was surprised when I told her how long we had been waiting. Had we not been there celebrating a birthday we would have left. We also noticed the food portions are a lot smaller now for the same price. Our experiences of being forgotten and pushed to the side are enough to no longer come here. Ironically probably not the best place to plan a special dinner if you're Hispanic. read more

I cannot say enough about Fernando. I live in Tennessee and go back forth to come see my mom, who loves Fernando. She looks forward to seeing him and always wants to sit in his section. The thing about Fernando is that he is very thoughtful, kind, and intelligent. He remembers last conversations and specific things about my friends and family. Fernando is the kind of person every company wants to hire because a company can train a person like Fernando, but they can't train intuitive with-it-ness, thoughtfulness, and kindness. They can't train first reactions and quick pivots to the next best option with follow through. Fernando will go far in life professionally with his innate skills. I was happy to learn the manager, Corey- who is also awesome- knows Fernando is a rare gem. ​​The staff is great here and I have had many different servers. The vibe was good, the food was excellent, and the drinks were really good. Unfortunately, the customer service completely missed the mark. We visited during happy hour, but there was no happy hour menu on the table and the waiter never mentioned that happy hour was happening. Because of that, we didn't realize we were missing out on specials. When we shared this with the manager, he did apologize, but he seemed unbothered and lacked empathy. It felt more like a formality than genuine concern. What really sealed it for us was when the waiter returned and we explained the situation again. Instead of apologizing, he said he "couldn't read our minds." That response was dismissive, unprofessional, and frankly upsetting. Being blamed as the customer for not knowing about happy hour, when it wasn't communicated, was unacceptable. The food was great, but good food doesn't make up for poor customer service. It seems that either their shrimp are not stored properly or their sour cream has gone bad. Also, I asked the waiter how many tortillas comes with the dish and he said "6". But I later found out that there was only "4". I did not bother the staff the cook me two more tortillas. But it seems that the staff are not trained well enough to know the amount of tortillas are supposed to be in the dish Price: Too pricy for Mexican food. I asked for a quiet table for privacy as there was plenty of seating at the time; I was seated by the kitchen, bathrooms and next to a table full of guests. Chips were warm, lightly salted and guacamole served in a sleek black bowl with cilantro and finely chopped tomatoes, really good taste; nice presentation. As I waited I finished my iced tea, never to be refilled in the 20 minutes I waited for my sister's arrival. We promptly ordered a chilé relleno, rice and beans, and she a steak Caesar salad. Much to be desired on the bland steak, cooked medium and salad. She was hoping for fresh parmesan shavings atop at the moat and a better tasting dressing. I should've read the menu better, not the traditional relleno. I was surprised at the spice, thickness of the pepper and hard carrots inside. The pepper and cheese itself was delicious but the roasted vegetables inside shocked me; not a good combination in my opinion. Rice was a deep Rojo color with a slight spice I couldn't put my finger on and the beans were bland and flat tasting. We also ordered the flan, it was good not amazing. More spongy than the typical rich, smooth creamy custard. The side icecream was just okay. Service was much to be desired, it did get quite busy as the evening went on. I've been a customer here before and never expected an experience like this. On New Year's, we entered the restaurant calmly with the intention of using the restroom and ordering food and drinks while joining members of my party who were already inside. Within moments of stepping in, 5 staff members -- including a manager -- aggressively approached us (2 women) and told us we had to leave immediately. No clear explanation was given despite asking calmly why we were being denied service. The tone was hostile from the start. Staff were raising their voices, getting in our faces, and accusing us of being drunk -- which was not true. We had barely just arrived. Several members of our party, who had planned to spend money there, were also forcefully told to leave. They unnecessarily charged at us making us feel uncomfortable- it felt as if they intentionally wanted to humiliate us since it was 5 staff members to 2 women. As we were exiting, the manager used profanity, threatened to call the police, and then physically grabbed and pushed one of my friends out of the restaurant with force, which was shocking and completely unacceptable. To make matters worse, another staff member followed us outside, continuing to shout insults and use degrading language as we were leaving. At no point were we aggressive. We were confused, calm, and simply trying to understand why we were being treated this way. Instead, we were met with hostility, intimidation, and physical force. This was not just bad service -- it was an unsafe and a humiliating experience. Based on how this situation was handled, I will never return and cannot recommend this establishment to anyone who expects to be treated with basic respect and professionalism. I was afraid at the level of aggression this started at from the vulgarity of their tone. For my safety, I felt the need to record after they mistakenly said we were intoxicated and could not be served upon seconds of walking into the restaurant. read more

Very underwhelming Mexican food. WAY too overpriced for the lack of flavor. The Al pastor in my enchiladas was so flavorless I didn't even notice it with each bite. The decor and layout is aesthetically pleasing and that's about it. I wish I could get a refund because the treatment at this place made me want to cry. My concerns about this establishment: I went for a friend's bday with about 8 people and we were not met with great service. Everyone in my party ordered an entree, beverages, and desserts but we were treated as if we were an inconvenience. We were a generous group of paying customers, and not just there for a place to talk. I noticed two of the white Blonde servers kept giving my party dirty looks. We dined for about 2.5 hours and a random server came to our table and told us that we needed to leave. This wouldn't have been an issue if we were told prior to dining that there was a cap. It was awkward because half of the party had just ordered drinks. If they wanted us to leave for the next reservation they should have politely requested that we wrap up our dinner so they could accommodate the next party. On top of that we had to wait about 30 minutes for the check AFTER they asked us to leave. Everyone in my party was a person of color and it just felt very discriminatory and uncomfortable. No one was disrespectful, no one was obnoxious, or gave any reason for the poor treatment. I have never felt so uncomfortable in a restaurant before. I'm very disappointed with this experience and I would not recommend this restaurant. read more
