Heads up, tried parking in their lot and literally had to back out cuz it's so tight and couldn't make it through. Someone could've swiped a car, as a car was parked next to the fence and it was sticking out. Be careful! Wouldn't park in that lot. It's a one way too. Came here on a Thursday evening at 4pm for happy hr. They sat us right down once we walked in. We waited, looked at the menu, used the restroom and still no one checked on us. It was about 15 minutes before I was about to get up and check on what's going on, but then someone walked over to us finally to take a order. Happy hour from 3-6 M-F! We both ordered tacos with rice and beans. I got a chicken tortilla soup that I had to remind them I ordered. Wanted it before my meal. Got it half way into the meal. We also shared the salsa flight. Delicious!!! All made in house! Soup was very good as well. Loved my Al pastor tacos. They came with 4 tiny street tacos. Really loved the taste. Two bits per taco.... Tops lol. Rice lacked flavor as did the beans. Oh! They also have a bar in the middle of the restaurant to watch a game. Overall, the ambiance was really nice too. Dark with candles lite Inside. I miss Video Paridiso (the spot that used to be here behind Rhino Records) yet here we are... yet another upscale Mexican food restaurant in Claremont. I always believe you need to let a new place work out its kinks... allow it to find its groove. We went in the first week of opening. We ordered the Guacamole, Ahi Tuna Tostadas, Campechano Enchiladas, and Watermelon Hibiscus Margarita. I like the Margarita and pretty much all the other dishes but nothing stood out fantastic in flavor. The decor is gorgeous, there are a lot of TVs to watch a game if that is your persuasion, and the outdoor patio is inviting for any season as they have heaters out there. I was just kicked out of CDMX along with my 67-year-old mother and my 8-year-old daughter all because I asked the manager, CHRIS, if we could move from outdoor seating to the inside. We arrived at 5 pm. The entire indoor area was empty, but he insisted all the tables were being held for reservations. In all my dining experiences, from Houston's to hole-in-the-wall spots, I've never had a manager hold every table hostage for potential reservations. As a paying customer, I was shocked when CHRIS told me, in the middle of eating my meal, that if a reservation showed up, I would have to give up my seat. It's completely unacceptable. I've always loved La Popular and recommend it often, especially because of the outstanding service I've received from DAN, who sets the bar for hospitality. Sadly, this shift manager was the opposite. He lacked emotional control, escalated a simple request, and even went as far as to threaten calling the police, despite there being no raised voices or inappropriate behavior from me. This was not just poor customer service!!!! It was mishandled conflict that left me, my elderly mother, and my young daughter humiliated and unwelcome. I hope the restaurant takes this seriously because loyal guests deserve far better. Good old faithful Elvira's Grill. Just up the street and always reliable. When La Popular first opened in town it got a lot of excitement. There were teething issues that were reported on social media. I was interested but turned off my the social media reviews. I finally visited twice a week for lunch with friends and I had a great time. They have an excellent lunch taco special that I ordered twice and wasn't able to finish both times. The tacos were delicious. The service was good overall. There was a good crowd but it wasn't packed so we got our orders quickly. The first time we sat indoors and the second time on the patio. There's something about the indoor space that makes it feel noisy (too industrial perhaps). Outside was much nicer and I recommend outside if the weather is ok. Came on a Tuesday night and they were very busy. We were quoted 45 mins for 2 people. Luckily we found a spot at the bar and sat down right away. The inside is very clean and simple, with music playing and a view of the hardworking kitchen staff. Our bartender was slow. She took forever to take our drink order and then to take our food order and then to let us pay our bill. There was literally zero interest. The tortilla soup was not worth the $10. It was simply tortilla strips and broth. A little sour cream maybe and a piece or two of chicharron. The chicken enchiladas were really tasty. The campechano tacos were greasy and the tortillas were not warmed enough to stop them from falling apart. A vast majority of their drinks are pre-mixed so no modifications, which isn't ideal. New spot in Claremont. I love the concept, location and vibe of the space. The execution and authenticity of food was my only critique. The menu is simple and shows offerings that you would hope would all be amazing given that there are not many items on the menu. The bar menu is extensive and drinks look and taste amazing. The al pastor tacos, for example, were not much different than what you would see at a local taco stand. The quantity and taste did not match the price, in my opinion. The corn tortillas were a bit too large and were not homemade (which is fine. Most places aren't, but for the price you would imagine they would be). The tortillas were dry and cracked down the middle when eating them, and the meat to tortilla ratio was very sad. My husband and I thought that if instead of 2 larger tacos (with mostly tortilla) to do 3 mini street tacos with an elevated topping or presentation, it may justify paying over $15 for a plate. The 2 shrimp tacos were a bit more elevated and served with a crispy flour tortilla. The rice and beans portion was very small, and they served both in the same bowl? The price point did not match the quality or quantity on this plate either. The habenero bbq ribs were good. We asked for a bit more sauce. The esquite (corn) side had amazing flavor, but the corn was very overcooked, with more of a creamed corn texture. Not pictured - shrimp Agua Chile was very good, well made, and had a good amount of shrimp and avocado. The presentation in a molcajete bowl thru us off a bit, but taste was great. The churros were on happy hour menu, and they were piping hot. Drinks (house margarita and Agua Fresca), both not pictured, were both very good. Overall, I would give this place another try and try other items. My recommendation would be to have the same level of detail and care for the food quality and presentation as you do for the drinks. The bar menu is extensive, and each drink is prepared beautifully and with a lot of detail and justifies the price point. The food, on the other hand, could use the same amount of attention to detail as the cocktails. read more

We started with chips and salsa, excellent salsa. Chips were fresh. I had birria queso tacos, they were good. They get soggy fast so eat them right away. They serve two with rice and beans. Beans were a little salty for my liking, I had one taco and shared the other with my husband. My husband had the enchiladas with three types of meat, it lacked a little flavor. The cocktails can be stronger but great presentation. We sat at the bar since they have full service. The server was Kate and she was great! The decor is super cute. Rustic and modern combo. Really like the space. It looks nice inside. The food is good as well. I enjoyed the campechano tacos, the guac with added ribeye chicharron, and the salsas in the salsa flight. The chips were extremely salty and some were even so oily they were soggy and chewy. I would still come back for the food though. The drinks though...maybe just stick with a normal marg. Desert rose has hibiscus tequila using a tiki mug so you can't even see the color of the tequila anyways, and the acidity of the lime covers the Licor 43 up. The milk punch is really good, but I was very disappointed in the garnish and the amount of ice used to prop up the garnish. I think we only got 2oz of drinkable punch after most of it was ruined with all that sugar that went into the drink. I'm not one to complain about ice in a drink, but I think my grievance about this one is valid. This cup is probably a 6-7 oz glass and filled all the way up with ice plus a big lime and a big sugar skull.... then it was ruined when the skull broke and fell into the drink. I wouldn't mind if the drink was just 1.5 oz of spirit with all that ice and the sugar fell in...but it was a milk punch. Please consider serving this drink with a plate to place the sugar skull somewhere else or making the skull smaller so it stays in the lime. read more

Acknowledgment is extremely important. If staff is busy, let you customers know that it'll be a short wait, we are very much understanding. The menu looked great but we obviously didn't order. The ambiance is nice, not much lighting with a feel of intimacy. We probably would've enjoyed our experience but having to wait over 15 mins with no acknowledgment gave me the impression that our experience would be better off elsewhere. 10/10 for ambiance. This is a definitely a nice restaurant for a girls brunch or date night and located in a great area in Claremont. Food wise, I'd give it a 7/10. The aguachiles were good. My friend had the chicken enchiladas and those were tasty while I ordered the campechana (rib eye) enchiladas topped with chorizo. I think mine just tasted like all ground beef but it lacked something for me. I wouldn't order these enchiladas again. Drinks were good, not strong but your usual trendy restaurant vibe. All fancy names and sweet liquor but the highlight of the drinks for me was the Carajillo. Our server described it to us as a sort of espresso martini so we were surprised when it came out. For me personally, it tasted like a horchata but very delicious and refreshing. La Popular has music playing but not ridiculously loud like other "trendy" restaurants. At least here you can at least have a conversation with your friends and not have to shout over each other so I appreciate that. Overall a little pricey but I would like to come back again just to try a different entree and maybe another cocktail. Just want to thank Matt R. Our server and Chris the store manager for all their hard work. Yesterday we went to eat for Mother's Day and Matt was spot on with the recommendations for food and drinks.
