I'm very confused why this place has such high ratings. I was very disappointed with my entire order from the elote appetizer to my tostada entree, the food was extremely bland and did not taste like much of anything. Also the tortilla soup was probably the worst tortilla soup I ever had it was basically all cheese no actual soup. I pictured myself on Bar Rescue waiting for someone to stop everything that's going on in this place and rescue it. Met some friends here that we hadn't seen in years. Came early for the happy hour drinks and appetizers. We had several of the apps: beef sliders, ceviche, nachos and gen tacos. All were great and sizable portions. Round two we had another order of the ceviche and nachos!!! Margaritas were great. But my new fave would be the spicy mule (might not have the name correct, but you get the hint!) super good! Odd little location with no outdoor seating that I could see. Would be awesome to have an outdoor patio option, especially in AZ! Our server, Angel, was great! Very attentive and friendly! The biggest, most sincere smile ever! As our night was winding down he suggested a shot of tequila. 20% off on Friday!!! I'm not much for tequila shots, but we got the one he suggested and shared sips of it. So. Very. Good! Wanted to try some place new so hubby picked this place. We started with the shrimp and fish ceviche. I wish there was more fish and shrimp but the flavor was tasty. Then for entrees, he got the traditional burro with carne adovada and I got the chile relleno with shrimp. The meat in his burro was so tender and had good flavor and my entree was delicious! A good amount of shrimp inside and a perfect cheese ratio and some spice. Our server was great! Wish I remembered his name. But very nice guy. Definitely will be back. read more

It is awful that I loved this place in 2020 and would've given it a 5 star rating ...only thought the prices were high yet now the food sat on my plate untouched after 2 bites because the flipping sopapillas tasted horrible and my meal consisted of sopa pillas seeing that I had ordered stuffed sopapillas. I even had ordered a few extra sopapillas...I asked the waiter to bring them with the meal. I like to have them to bring home with left overs so I can use them to make stuffed sopa pillas out of them at home the next day BUT they all tasted like crap so they all sat on my plate. My son had brought me out for this dinner. He knows how much I enjoy new Mexican food so he wanted to treat me. His was good he said. He had rellenos I believe... He ate them ;) he explained to the waiter that I was not eating my food because I said it was awful and tasted like the sopapillas were cooked in dirty oil or something. The waiter said he was going to take care of it and remove them off the bill. We thought he meant all of the sopapillas. But no. He took off the 2 extra side sopapillas that I had asked for off Like $4. Haha my entire plate of food the stuffed sopapilla meal that I didn't eat was left on the bill. Nice one. And my sweet son tipped that jerk waiter too. Not cool of a situation I can see if the food had been edible but it was ALL sitting on plates on the table . Not a good way to treat customers. Bartender Amber was attentive, catered to my specific need and she was funny. Immediately you are met with the Zia symbol showing the food is authentically New Mexican. What is "New Mexican"? Suppose you are familiar with Mexican sauces by the end of your meal you will know the difference. The chips and salsa red (hot) and green (not so much) are tasty finish this serving. I recommend the blue corn red chile cheese enchilada; eat this slowly, savoring each bite to enjoy. Next, order the sopapillas with ice cream. There is plenty of out-door safe seating. read more

Soooo.... I had previously given La Rista five stars. And we've been there several times. But sometimes a restaurant really drops the ball and doesn't seem to notice, or care. That was tonight. So I get it's busy on a Friday night, but we've always eaten here on a Friday, and we expect it to be busy with the normal things that happen on a busy night. Ignoring your customers isn't normal. Forgetting to input an order into the POS then acting like the kitchen was backed up instead of just owning your mistake and not assuming the customer is stupid. Paying more attention to your drinking buddies and checking your phone (you actually allow this?) while neglecting the table right next to them. Management? Yeah, she walked right by several times looking right past us, oblivious to the empty drinks and chips. The ONLY reason for two stars and not one was that when we FINALLY did get our food it tasted good. Based on the complete lack of awareness on the "management". Update..... I was contacted by John (owner/mgr) regarding my two star review, after hearing my concerns he sent me a gift card for another dinner for two. Well we finally had an opportunity to gO back, and we were not disappointed. This was the La Ristra we were used to. Great service, excellent food, fair prices. Thank you! Hubby and I have come here on many occasions. I've left great reviews in the past, but tonight was a disappointment. Waitress was nice but waited along time for her to show up to take my drink order and order food, then she only checked on us once during the meal as she was hurrying to a different table. She finally showed up to give us the bill. Hubby said his food was good but not worth the price... I was disappointed from the start with all the Hot Peppers next to almost everything on the menu. Which weren't there on our past visits. I love green chilies, but La Ristra puts Hot green chilies into a lot of their dishes now. Everything I wanted had hot peppers next to it . I finally settled on À la carte Enchiladas they were weird (I really wanted Tamales but both options were once again too Hot)...I've never had an enchilada, look so sad before. Corn tortillas looked weird, I opted for Queso on top, because I was afraid any sauce would end up being too hot, queso was ok, (not enough of it) I've had way better out of a jar thou. Inside was almost no cheese with diced grilled chicken. The chicken was slightly dry but tasted decent but overall, I would never order enchiladas like that again...I guess it just wasn't what I expected. I'm use to enchiladas being Full of cheese n Meat n sometimes sauce. Then on top of all that they wanted to charge me $2 extra for the dry grilled chicken, which thankfully she was able to take off the bill when I asked about it. And of course I was too disappointed to remember to take pictures. Doubt anyone would want to see my sad enchiladas. We probably won't be visiting here again. read more

The food is good. We've come three times and enjoyed what we ate. Green Chile casserole is by far the favorite. I love that ground beef is a choice. The service is hit or miss. Our last two servers were nice but very spacey and kept forgetting our requests. So bad to the point that we opted to not order their awesome sopaipillas and just get out of there. The female bartender rocks. It's too bad I forget her name. Anyhow we give a 4 star rating. They'd get 5 if the service was more tentative including the reception. read more

Popped in when visiting Gilbert for a wedding and it was super good! Honestly everything was tasty and unique. From the chips served with 3 salsas to our entrees we were all delighted by the flavors. We all agreed the quesadilla was our favorite dish among the entrees. The service was also exceptional. read more

Voted ONE OF THE BEST KEPT SECRETS and placed 2nd for Best Mexican & Best Brunch for the Best of Gilbert, which is not surprising. My husband and I often come here right after our marriage counseling session. We go to regular counseling, then come here for drinks and dinner for the real counseling, lol. It's a joke between us. The place is kept clean and most of the time we get seated right away. Obviously it ranges on what's going on and time of day, but the longest we've ever had to wait was 10mins. The margaritas, even the house margarita, is always good and my #1 go to. They had a Thurs special where you could get a pitcher for $19.99, which we loved to share. Their cheese crisp/Mexican pizza is a big portion and always delicious. I mean, you can't really go wrong with melted cheese on a tortilla, but it's nice to know that they do it right. Haha. I love their fajitas with their corn and mashed potatoes. It sounds like an odd combination and it is, but doesn't mean that it's not good, because it is. Husband always likes to try something new, he's even had just a regular burger, but he always clears his plate, which I think is a testimony to how much he enjoys the food. Chips and salsa are always good. On the days we bring out daughter, that's one of her favorite things, the salsa. She also loves their beans and cheese burritos, and the fact that if she behaves and eats her food, she gets a reward at the end. Last time she got a little bouncy ball. I am 5 months pregnant and all I have been craving has been cheesy, spicy, New Mexican enchiladas. We came here on a whim because our other favorite New Mexican place is in Central Phoenix. Their food was ok, but not the greatest. I ordered their blue corn chicken enchiladas, christmas style. I felt like the plate was missing more sauce. I had to keep scraping the corners to get the chili taste on my enchiladas. The sopapilla that came with the dish was nothing memorable. Unfortunately, we will not be coming back to this place. Living literally 3 minutes away and my wife being from New Mexico, yesterday we both scratched our heads why we never go here. Been once maybe 5 years ago. Great looking restaurant and nice ambience, albeit a bit dark and hard to read the menu. Great choices on the menu and also on the drink menu. Really cold Draft beer and great margaritas. I'm not a fan of order takers as servers and server Marc really helped menu guide and he knows his product. Very friendly prompt service to. Good conversationalist, mention their opening a store in Chandler and also about how they roast the hatch green chilies once a year. I had a chicken filled chilli relleno that was really good. The meat had incredible flavor. I had their squash mixture ( I can't remember the name of it) and pinto beans, unfortunately both needed salt. The staff is SUPER sweet & they were all wearing mask as well. They give you chips & 3 different salsa which are super yummy but can be very spicy if you can't handle it! We also got my kids food and their food was good and I liked that the brought it out first cause I think they noticed they were getting cranky while waiting. The margarita I had was DELICIOUS! Usually when I get something with jalapeño it's always a hit or miss but this place was a hit. Right balance between sweet spicy and tequila! At this restaurant, I had the worst experience. I asked for Shrimp Diablo Pasta without bacon. My plate came with bacon, which I informed the waitress about. She picked up the plate and returned with another. I started eating and noticed a strange taste. Please improve your take out, your food is way to good to let small details ruin it. Every time I order take out from a delivery company, this place skims on providing chips, even when you order an $8 dip, barely got enough chips for one person. They also don't put much thought how they place the food in the to go to containers they choose to use. So things either get all over each other or tacos are soggy by the time you get your food delivered. I've eaten at the restaurant as well several times and love their food, but the inside is dark and dumpy, really needs some upgrades in the interior. For a place that has good food, they are really missing the small details that add up for most. read more

This is the best. We go here to get food that is close to what we used to eat in New Mexico. We have tried various things on the menu and all have have been good, except the sopapillas. Too hard, I can make those at home myself! hahaha. Everything else is delicious. The menu is confusing for me because where I came from carne adovada is not just something added to a burrito or enchilada. I like to eat it by itself, in all of its red chile goodness. I have never been told NO you can't order it that way. They always take my order, and the kitchen delivers it exactly as I have instructed. The wait staff is always great and friendly. Each time we have gone, I have questions and each time the staff goes out of their way to answer. If they don't know they will find out. The salsa is good and the chips are always fresh. This weekend, August 25-26, they are bringing in a load of green chile from hatch and roasting it! Saving us a trip and time! They only bad thing, and I have complained already, they will not peel it! hahaha. The best thing about this restaurant is they serve Santa Fe Brewing beer. Brad is a "Happy Camper" when he visits. This weekend, August 25-26, there is a chile festival in celebration of the chile season in Hatch, New Mexico. The food was absolutely delicious I got the generation tacos steak, pork, and chicken. I'm usually hesitant on getting chicken because most places the chicken is dry but not the case, here it was juicy and they all were some of the best tacos I've had in a long time. La Ristra is a favorite of mine and has been since they opened a few years back. I have to say that I usually get the red enchilada with rice and pinto beans. A very tasty combo. Been here many times before but this visit was mediocre at best. Ordered a glass of wine only to get It in a dirty glass. Lip marks, fingerprint marks. I tried wiping it off with my napkin but specks on the inside and out. Bartender asked if he could get me a clean glass and I said yes please. Only to get another not very clean glass. I watched him - why didn't he wipe it out??? I know dishwashers don't clean it all but at least wipe the glass with a clean cloth bartenders!!! My food came out Luke warm and my cheese enchilada wasn't melted. Husband's Carna Asada was good he said but I thought the food was way too salty. This was our first trip to this restaurant and we probably won't go back. We sat at the bar counter and had great service. The chips and salsa came quick - the chips were warm and the salsa was a trio of flavors. The green was the best while the bright red was underwhelming. We ordered a cheese crisp with green chile's which honestly was the best thing we had at this place. It was cheesy and crispy. I ordered the Green Chili plate and my husband got the Carne Adovada plate. Both plates only had two very small pieces of meat and a lot of sauce, I guess for the price it seemed like a small portion. Additionally the Adovada was much fattier than other places. read more

New Mexico Style - and done right! Chipotle Salsa and two others, blue corn and white corn chips! This place had me, coming in the door. Then we had Angel as our waiter - and he was awesome. The Blackened Shark Tacos he recommended - they were great. The slaw inside, the sauce, and the shark itself, was perfect. Green Corn Tamale didn't disappoint either. We fly out to Iowa in the morning, but La Ristra will be at the top of the list for our next trip through Mesa. read more

The pinto beans were good. That's all. They started with a trio of salsas. None of them were good. The chips were stale and lacked salt. My husband got the carne asada farmer burrito. He thought it would have been good if it wasn't smothered in this terrible red sauce. He got black beans which were also good. The rice had a weird taste to it. I got the shrimp enchiladas. The shrimp was over cooked and the sauce needed salt. The calabasitas inside were pretty good. We won't be back. I will say they had a ton of gluten free options which was good. read more
