WOW! Before our trip to Amsterdam I pursued various lists setting out the top restaurants in this lovely city. I wrote down the names of the establishments that appeared time and again. La Rive was one of those. The concierge made us the reservation but I had reservations about dining there. The dear hubby and I really enjoy what I'd call "fru fru" restaurants - those more pretentious than tasty. But we decided to stick to our plan and eat at La Rive. So incredibly glad we did! It was a 3 hour dinner that was so relaxing and enjoyable we didn't realize how much time had passed. We sat at a lovely table where we looked through huge windows out at the Amstel river. We were presented with a menu suggesting two 7 course menu options - one with meat the other vegetarian. Our captain explained if there was something among the courses we could skip it and make other substitutions if desired. We made our choices and selected a wine and started our dining journey. This was an amazing experience both from a culinary perspective and an overall "swanky" perspective. You have to go in with the right mindset knowing that you are there for a high class experience so when they bring out tastings that look too good to eat, eat them! Pros: all the food, ability to accommodate dietary restrictions, the view of the river, the cleanliness and the ambiance Cons: the high price, but you do get what you pay for We had a large group and the restaurant accommodated us in every way. They were very patient with our many questions. There wasn't a single dish we didn't like. We opted for the multi course option and each one came out in a timely well spaced out manner. The wait staff even took several pics for us knowing we had travelled far to be together. The small bag of chocolates at the end were a huge hit and great way to end the night. Phenomenal. I would say that's all I have to say, but I'll elaborate some more. Service - absolutely fantastic. All staff were very attentive every step of the way and through every course. My wine glass was never empty :). The sommelier was top notch and had a great sense of humor and amazing in depth knowledge of our wine selection. Our table was also consistently kept clean between each course. Ambience - it was a smaller place than I expected, but I think this set the right mood. It was me and my wife's first time in Amsterdam and it was our 1 year wedding anniversary. The small room made it more of an intimate experience and even though we weren't at a table right by the river, we still had a great view of it. Food - we went for the 7-course meals. There were 2 7-course options, so we got one of each so we could try them all. I'm no expert on fine cuisine and honestly I couldn't tell you what was in everything we ate, but the food was down right amazing. Even though it was a 7-course meal, there were some extras added as starters that were beyond creative and imaginative. Everything on a presentation and taste level was exquisite. As others have noted in their reviews, this is really not just a meal, its an experience. I think in total we had about 10 courses each with the extras they gave us and it was almost a 4 hour meal. This is definitely the best dinner I have ever had in my entire life. My fiancé and I did the 7 course tasting menu and felt like we went to heaven. The service was top notch, the food was mind blowing and the location was breath taking. We ended up spending 3 hours there, talking to the staff and feeling like a part of the family. We also decided to do the wine pairing with the dinner and the sommelier was informative and funny. I would fly back to Amsterdam just to experience this meal again. read more

This was an incredible dining experience. From the moment we sat down, everything was perfection (even the fire alarm going off causing us to be momentarily evacuated from the restaurant). My husband and I had never been to a Michelin-starred restaurant, and being in Amsterdam seemed like the perfect opportunity. The location along the River Amstel is ideal, with a beautiful view of the sparkling city and the water. This is definitely a traditional dining experience - they push your chair in for you as you're sitting, fold your napkin while you're away from the table, and deliver your food in perfect choreography. With that being said, the staff were not stuffy - they made us feel at ease. My husband and I got different menus - he the Gauche (left), me the Droite (right). The food was very good, but as I'm sure you realize, you're paying for La Rive's swank experience and reputation (and, if you're us, apparently also paying to listen to the other Americans at the next table loudly talk about moving to the Hamptons and whether or not they should sell their yacht.) In my opinion, there are better meals for lower price points (for example, the desserts seemed to be a bit too cloyingly sweet), but that's not why you go here, right? We agreed it was worth it for the experience, but I'm not sure that we'd return, just because there are many other places where you could spend less and come away feeling like you got more. read more

i'm usually not a big fan of Michelin stars, but this one really stood out. Great atmosphere, fantastic food, and excellent service. We took the 6 course dinner, pretty elaborate, mostly sea food but excellent choice though. felt a bit too full at the end, but was worth it. The view of the Amsel hotel from our table was breath-taking. A bit disappointed with the desserts though, i had a sliced pineapple dipped in coco-run, wasn't really the kind of desert i was expecting from a start hotel. This is a high-end restaurant in the Intercontinental Hotel. I had a drink in the bar first. Like the restaurant, the bar is expensive. Then I went to the restaurant, and was seated at a window table overlooking the Amstel River, which is a wonderful setting. I ordered a tasting menu. With its classic decor and impeccable service you most certainly will not be disappointed with this restaurant. The Amstel Hotel is probably the most famous hotel in Amsterdam. It's also the go-to hotel for celebrities and heads of state when they visit Amsterdam so you know you can expect lots of luxury and great service. When I was there for dinner in La Rive they had 2 menu options; Rive gauche and Rive Droite. Both were 7 course dinners. Although the portions were small you will not leave hungry. The ambience is great as well as it not noisy and the staff really takes the time for each customer. The restaurant has a very relaxing atmosphere! The view is also great since the restaurant is located on the banks of the Amstel. If La Rive is too expensive lunch on the terrace and high tea are also great and will not disappoint. The Amstel Hotel is definitely a must see! read more

After several visits over six years, I find La Rive remains in a very small group of "good as it gets" restaurants in Europe. Nothing is ever amiss, from the welcome on entry to the last cheerful good-bye a few hours later. In the early visits, I really loved the formality, the waiters in tails and white tie, the elegant, nearly silent service and the superb cuisine that always suited my tastes. Pairing wines was easy and best left to the discriminating tastes and extensive knowledge of the sommeliers and manager. I am never disappointed at their choices and the prices as well. If I have any complaints, it is not about the property or the hotel, but about the people who feel that because they have the money, they should be able to dine there dressed like homeless peasants and demanding food prepared as they want it, not as the master chef, after 30 years experience, knows how to do it. La Rive is one of a vanishing class of elegant, perfectly tuned dining experiences. My hope is that management will continue to realize that their repeat clientele appreciate things as they were/are, and not as they might be in two million other restaurants world wide. And yes, it is pricy, but my experience remains that you get what you pay for. Each course was perfect in meeting the description, the presentation and the quality of the product. This is not easy and maintaining the standards of La Rive is one of the factors that make my trips to Europe always include an overnight stop in Amsterdam and at La Rive. If you want lower prices, there are hundreds of places other than La Rive to choose from. read more

Inside the Amstel hotel with a beautiful view at the level of the river, classic, elegant, cozy atmosphere. Attentive service, professional but friendly. Extensive wine list with interesting "collection" selection. We had the 6 course menu, very nicely rearranged for a gluten free and light dairy request with last minute notice. Presentation excellent, execution very good, recognizable high quality ingredients. The truffle wasn't excellent and definitely overwhelmed by the richness of the short ribs; the Waygu was different than I expected, interesting but not my favorite preparation. Very creative the dessert, but not surprising at the palate. Over all a very pleasant culinary and hospitality experience. We will be back for more fun! read more
