Something has definitely changed here in the last 6 months! What they have always called "fried pork", is now some inedible dog food! I've been eating here for over 15 years. I understand that this is Oregon Mexican food, but what's happening here is out of control! I bet there is a lot of toilet paper being used after eating here these days. Love the location and decor of this Mexican cafe. It feels cozy and intimate inside yet has picture windows all around for for watching people and cars go by. Seems to be a pretty popular spot for lunch. They offer specials and the food comes up quickly. Our waitress was attentive and efficient and within minutes, we had drinks, chips and three kinds of dip - an avocado dip, a bean dip and salsa - which were all good. We ordered chile rellenos with chicken and carne asada torta. The dishes come with the standard beans, rice and salad but the proportions are perfect. We both ate every bite and were satisfied, slightly full but not bulging! I had the chile rellenos and they were a good balance of egg, chile, cheese, chicken with a light, fresh tomato sauce. Overall, it's pretty standard Mexican fare but not as greasy and filling as most. We were also entertained by the Mexican novelas playing silently in the background on the TV. read more

We stopped at LaRoca for a late lunch on Labor Day. I wasn't expecting much at an off the main drag Mexican place but we were pleasantly surprised both by the food and the service. For the coast this is a great Americanized Mexican restaurant. Heavy on tacos burritos and other typical Mexican standards. The chips were served warm with two salsas and beans. Both salsas were respectable but I really like the green tomatillo based one. It was hot enough to have a nice kick but not so hot that it over powered the flavor. We shared a super nacho for less than ten bucks and left stuffed after eating only about three quarters of the dish. The nacho was your standard nacho except that it came with three meets, chicken, pork and beef, not your typical one meat nacho. The jalapeños were large slices that needed to be cut down to size before eating but still a nice touch. I should emphasize the chips again. They are warm, crunchy and they tasted fresh not like some places where they have that stale grease taste. I'd definitely stop here again if I was hungry for a quick Mexican meal. read more

It seems the supply chain problems have hit this place. Despite the name, there's now almost no seafood dishes on the menu (it used to be loaded with them, and all good; now, bar fish tacos and one or two shrimp items, it's strictly shoreside.) Made the best of it and went for the chicken Chile Rellano, and was not disappointed - no skimping on the chicken or cheese. Sides on the plate are the standard refried beans, Spanish rice, and a bit of shredded lettuce, but all good and fresh. Hope they get back to the old menu soon, though! read more

Can't really tell you if the food was any good or not. After waiting forever to get served water and chips, our drinks finally arrived after asking if they had forgotten them waiting for 15 minutes. They finally took our order, and then waited another 20 minutes until the wrong meals arrived, except for one. Even the one that did arrive was not quite right. We said that it was ok and we would get started while they found the the other two if they could get us some silverware. 15 minutes later, with no silverware, the one meal now cold, and neither of the other two in sight we left. read more

Let me tell you about this place. I read others reviews and was a little worried going here, but because I have a husband that gets hangry and is super picky, I need something close and Mexican. (I can never go wrong with Mexican food with him) I was craving seafood, Mexican style of course, that's why we came here. There were a ton of other cute sea food restaurant around, but I wanted to feel comfortable, I wanted to order something that I knew what I was getting. When we got there the waiter was nice and told us to seat at a table inside. But we had our puppy, so I asked if we could seat outside, and she gladly accommodate us. She even said we could have him with us. It's was a nice day to be outside. She brought us some chips, beans and salsa and our drinks. Made her work extra cuz she had to go around and up and down the stairs. The salsas are not my favorite. But I'm used to that. Usually everywhere I go, the salsas are not that great. I like them hot and they were mild in my opinion. But still, is free salsa. I order a fried fish and husband ordered tacos and other stuff. It was on point, just the way I like it. I think this will be our spot for the next trip we go there. Hopefully I'll be as satisfied as the day I went. Ps. It took me a month to write this review. What kinda crap was this? I've been coming here for a year and a half and have been pretty satisfied with the quality of food. Service is spotty at times but- - -? On this occasion we were served stale chips and on the bottom of the first basket was a maraschino cherry stem. After we brought this to the waitress attention she looked at it and looked at us and shrugged her shoulders and no apology. She returned with a basket of mixed stale and fresh chips. I really had a great experience here and the food was great. Nachos were solid. Salsas were home made and on point. The chips looked fresh and not bagged or stale. I am actually floored there are any bad reviews. I think the only feedback I'd give was bus tables as soon as possible. Ate dinner here tonight (2022/06/04). We were seated right away. Very good chips and salsa and water were delivered quickly. Within a few minutes our order was taken and food delivered promptly. I had the two-item combo with a pork tamal and chicken enchilada. My wife ordered an ala carte chicken enchilada and a side of refried beans. Although the enchiladas could have been heated a bit more, overall the meal met our expectations and the service was great. We were pleased with the smiling staff and expeditious service. Some of the best tacos I've had on the coast. There are a lot of mexican-food cafes on the coast -- though most of them are owned by just a couple of hubs. And while the La Roca in Lincoln City is acceptable -- the one in Newport has outshone it's counterpart every time we've tried them. As I am not a big bean-and-rice plate kind of customer -- I recently ordered 3 kinds of tacos from the appetizer menu, and then topped it off with a dish of guacamole. All 3 taco styles (carne asada, pastor, and carnitas) were up to my expectations and followed 3 distinct seasoning profiles (always a good sign.) The guacamole was more green paste than actual guac -- like un-ripe avocado blended to a puree with some ice and thickener of some kind -- with no lime/onion/cilantro or any other seasoning to speak of. It was a little like eating plastic pudding. Husband's chicken quesadilla was excellent -- not a shred left on his plate. And he is more than happy to go back for more anytime we're in the neighborhood. Again -- don't go in expecting Tex-Mex or Cal-Mex, or even coastal Mexico-Mex. There's not much in the way of chilis -- New Mexico Reds, Hatch greens, or otherwise. But their food is good. I'll be avoiding the guac in the future, but the tacos are a big YES. read more

They charge for chips!!!!' This restaurant seemed very promising at first. The chips were amazing. We had service right away. After that, things went downhill fast. The server disappeared after bringing food and had to be waved back over for anything else. The food was ok. It was very small portions for the price. We asked for another basket of chips (1 basket was about half of what you'd get at any other place). The biggest problem was my bill. I had to track down the server to pay. He gave me my bill and it was $29 for lunch for two people! Turns out, they charge $2 for an extra basket of chips. I did not see that anywhere on the menu and was never told of the additional charge. The small amount of chicken that was "subbed" for ground beef in the chimichanga was an extra $3! Once I had my food brought to me I was quite supprised to find that this was some of the best Mexican food I have had in years. I must have gone on an off night, because everything about the experience was awful! We called ahead to make reservations, but the person who answered their phone seemed clueless as to what we were talking about. We arrived, they seated us at what was probably their worst table, smelled of mold and bleach, and had a view of their inventory. In another room, all the tables and chairs were much nicer, and they begrudgingly moved us when we asked if we could sit in there, even though it was empty. From there we could see the bar, and outdoors, felt more like a restaurant and not a store room, but we got attitude from the staff after that. The woman who took our order seemed confused, didn't seem to speak much English, was unable to answer questions about the menu, and seemed rather put out. I suspect she is the one who answered the phone when we called. She came back to the table once, we asked for a different beverage, as their soda was flat. She agreed, took the flat drink away, and never returned. When the food did come out, which took a pretty long time, one plate was wrong, another one was cold, the third was a burrito that had about a quarter teaspoon of guac and pico on a mound of blah beans, and the fourth plate was way later than the other three. This was after a server went parading by us with a tray full of steaming hot food to the people who came in after us and agreed to sit and the nasty, stinky table. The service was terrible. It was uncomfortable. It really felt as though they didn't even want us there. Maybe if the person who answered the phone when we called had let us know they were all just really interested in watching a big soccer game, we could have avoided what was undoubtedly the worst dining experience I have ever paid for. Which was just after the woman who incorrectly took our order announced very loudly, and in perfectly clear English, "They want separate checks!" while rolling her eyes. The WORST!! read more
