I visited Newport many times over the past few years. I happened to ask someone from Mexico of where she would go out with her family for Mexican food. She recommended La Roca. At lunch I tried lunch portion taco with rice and beans and ordered two extra tacos. I'm very satisfied with my order. Their salsa is hot and everything tasted good. They have excellent food, nice, clean environment, yet every time my family, and myself went in, we seemed to be treated less, and less like paying customers, and more like a hassle. Not going back, this last time, "the third time", was by far the worst. The waitress couldn't be bothered to even reciprocate in any way after saying thank you for the table, ant thank you for the appetizers, and water. We left a dollar in change, and left. Only one short block off 101, but the food was excellent. It was the first time my husband saw that they had lengua (beef tongue) on the menu. Most Mexican restaurants don't offer it. He even got me to taste it. I pictured a pink "meat" with taste buds on it. LOL. Strangely enough it really did taste like a tender steak. Thought it would be another Americanized representation of Mexican food but what we found was an authentic representation of mazatlan cuisine. This place I'd amazing! This is the best Mexican food in Lincoln County. We go here frequently for lunch on the run. Super Beef Burrito! and Super Chicken Burrito! Those and the tacos are great. La Roca is a great find not only on the coast but in Oregon. I have only found three really good Mexican restaurants in the state. This is one of them. The food is excellent, the chips are warm and fresh, served with two types of salsa and warm refried beans. You can count on good food, but sometimes the service is a little slow. read more

OK I used to go here pretty frequently but the deco has changed considerably and I will no longer go there. The kitchen is very inconsistent. I recommend the super burrito - it will always be prepared differently (I have had at least six variations....) but tasty. The margaritas were always excellent. Now - since late 2017, they have been "renovating"...months passed and it just seemed to be getting worse, not better....and the fish tank just gets dirtier and dirtier....now it's disgusting....there is high bright cafeteria lights....I question the cleanliness of everything and it's just awful to be there...so unfortunately there is my 3 star review. read more

Started with a peach and a blackberry margarita. Both were great! Chips, 2 salsas and bean dip was a nice treat while we waited. Food came out fast and was very hot. Server was efficient but busy and looked like she was on her own. Lots of dirty tables cleaned up with the help of a young man in between serving customers. Shredded beef flautas were moist and flavorful. Shrimp with red crema, (Camarones crema) was super. These meals were as good as we have had in Tucson with fresh Gulf of CA seafood. The 'authencity' of the food as Mexican is questionable. Didn't have the spices steeped into the meat or sauces that are the hallmark of Mexican food. Seemed a bit bland. However the place was clean and someone is keeping everything painted in cheery colors. We didn't realize dogs were permitted on the deck. Shhh. Don't tell ours who waited in the car! There were few patrons when we went. The server was nice enough, but the food was subpar to BAD. Even the refried beans were disappointing. The topper was my wife gave me some chicken to taste AFTER SHE HAD TRIED TO EAT HER MEAL and were ready to go. It tasted as if it were spoiled. The server hadn't exhibited much interest in our visit, so I didn't feel compelled to report our disappointment. Now WE will be amongst the throngs who DON'T patronize this sad establishment. This is the third Mexican restaurant we have tried since moving to the area. Others were "so so" - either good food but overpriced, or just average food and not so clean dining area. We went to La Roca del mar on the recommendation of a local electrician who did some work at our home. La Roca met all of our expectations. Clean, regularly bussed tables, pleasant staff, beer on tap, and numerous Margarita choices. My husband loved his chile rellenos - he tried one of each. Chips were warm and fresh, both salsas were spicy and delicious. My tamal had plenty of meat and a tasty sauce. This will definitely be our "go to" restaurant when we are craving Mexican food! It is the best we have had since leaving California, where good Mexican food is much easier to find. read more

We stopped here on our way back from a day at the beach. There was a large group of us with lots of kids and we were starving. We waited for a long time to be seated even though there were lots of tables- they were ignoring us. Once they did seat us (at 2 tables) we didn't get menus or drinks or silverware. We got two tiny baskets of chips for each table of 8 people and finally got a menu. After a VERY rude waitress took our order we waited forever for the food. No drinks or chip refills or anything. Our food started to come out and the drinks with it- the food was okay... nothing special and they got several orders wrong. And we had to wait for silverware to eat which meant the food was not really warm. When we asked to fix the wrong items we were treated like it was our fault. My 4 year old only wanted chips and we asked twice for a refill but they never brought them. Then finally as we got our check we asked for a 3rd time for chips to go since we had been in there for over an hour and the waitress snapped that it would be $3. Overall not worth the money and service was not good at all. I would not recommend this place. Terrible service ruined it for us. read more

Bad service, when we got there at 5:30 there were 2 long rows of tables in the middle, dirty and not bussed, they stayed that way until people started showing up, only cleaned the tables as needed, left the rest dirty. One of our orders was wrong, no one came back to ask if everything was good. Never saw the server again until trying to get the check and when we explained the order was wrong, she pointed at her pad and said the kitchen got it wrong. When we paid the bill, our table was still not cleared, had to move the plates just to sign the check. The place also smelled musty and not clean. Don't waste your money. read more

If La Roca is empty don't let that scare you off...the food is good! My husband and I stopped for a quick bite on our way out of town and it definitely hit the spot. The service was great as well. The chips and 2 different salsas were great and the al pastor taco lunch was excellent. For an Amercian-ized Mexican restuarant this place is great! They provide you with extremely fresh chips, beans and a couple types of salsas when you first arrive. The chips are homemade and delicious. We had a large group this past weekend and the staff was very accomodating and quick. My husband and I split the combo fajitas and several others ordered enchiladas and burritos. All agreed that the portions were huge and tasted great. Very basic Mexican food. Nothing super special, the staff was nice, the environment semi-cool. I like to look for that ONE thing that stands out but I honestly I cannot say that of anything here. I ordered the, o damn, I forgot. I have a feeling that that should tell me something!! O yeah, it was the nachos. Yeah, kinda alright. Portions are average, cheese the same.
