We also ordered combo Chile Relleno w/Sope with shredded beef the beef was really good I couldn't see the Sope was smothered buried under the cheese cheddar cheese. Service was really good, I really didn't like the salsa they could use some improvement in flavor asked for the spicy salsa & I got a mixer of Valentina with Tapatio. The atmosphere is fine; authentic looking decor. The servers are nice enough. The menu has a lot of options, but here's the kicker... everything has onions mixed in. I tried to order 3 different meals and was told that not only are there onions in the sauce (I order without sauce anyways,) but it's mixed into the beef and chicken, too. The server told me that everything they make has onion and cannot be made without. That's unfortunate for anyone with an allergy. Most Mazatlan restaurants are a bit better than this one located on Hwy.101 downtown Newport. We arrived at 3:15pm for a late lunch. We were seated with menus, and I asked if there was a lunch menu. She told me "lunch stops at 3pm." Well...ok. I guess at 3:15 we will have dinner LOL. On the front of the menu it says the first serving of chips and salsa are free. Any further servings you have to pay. Wow. Things are getting....tight? This was a small serving of chips and average runny salsa. Nothing special at all. When the food arrived, I noticed another post-covid habit of restaurants attempting to what...cut costs? There was no salt n pepper at any table. So I asked for salt and pepper. Oh...and yeah...no hot sauce...have to ask for that too. My girl, Mary Swanson asked for shredded beef in her tacos, but got ground beef. No...it's not worth even mentioning. Water refills at 3:30 when no one else is in the restaurant and 2 waitresses just standing talking to one another? Nope...well yes right when we were ready to leave she asks if we would like some more water. Tip to waitress: When re-filling water glasses, make sure your pitcher has lots of ice. Your pitcher was room-temperature tap water with no ice when re-filling our glasses that were mostly empty. This isn't rocket science.... It just seems like this Mazatlan compared to others is totally El Cheapo. Except the prices. The combination dinners (that apparently start at 3pm) start around $18 and up. There are other places down on the Newport bay front I wish we would have chosen. We won't be back. read more

I really enjoyed my dish, the shrimp was delicious! There were 5 big shrimp perfectly cooked with a little spicy flavor, the onion tasted good and also the mushrooms in it. I also liked the chips which were warm when they served it. Friendly nice service, colorful decorations. Food portion big, had to take a big box home. read more

We came here for lunch this past weekend. We were lucky that they were able to seat our family of 6 right away. They were generous with the chips and with the salsa. I had a lunch special of beef enchilada, rice and beans. The portions were large and quite tasty. They brought my hubby the wrong type of tacos and made him new ones and left us with the old ones, but sadly we everyone was full so we did not eat them. Probably the only negative was that my grandson ordered the kid's nachos, and the portion was small, and they came with rice and beans, which he doesn't like. We would return! read more

Instead of telling me something constructive (like "I'm sorry there is just 1 serving", or "There will have to be an extra charge", or just serving the extra and then charging) - old female waitress with glasses passive-aggressively debated to me that I was just 1 person, rolled her eyes, gruffly took small remainder of 1st chips and walked off. She did deliver more; but what was useful about her interaction prior?? In most visits she was brisk/impatient; even though I was 1 of only 2 tables she had, and she spent lots of time chatting with other waitress throughout. Not sure she ever thanked me for anything (to at least reciprocate my multiple thanks). When I chose the meat option I wanted (Asada steak) for the taco that came with my combo, she rudely acted like I was crazy before telling me Asada is not an option for my taco. Even though menu does not list that restriction for the combos; and the taco section itself lists Asada - was only choosing from the listed options.. but again, what is helpful for anyone to be rude about it? We love this place! You can get Pozole or Menudo everyday. The lamb shank, and the Chile Verde were perfect. Their sauces are delicious Now we need to come hungrier in order to have room for dessert- flan, xangos, sopapillas, churros and fried ice cream. Not very appealing from the exterior, and not really any better looking on the inside...but the staff is welcoming. When we first came in, it was a little empty. We were quickly seated. Our server was a funny lady and tried to make jokes. I went with something light...a shrimp ceviche tostada. Almost felt like they took some shrimp, cut it up and added it to some pico de gallo. It was a good snack though. Also had the Margarita Azul. I had really wanted a mojito, but they were out of mint. I asked if they had a cocktail menu and she said that they do not. A friend had the Campechana...she said that it was absolutely delicious with great flavors. Another friend had the Pescado Dorado...it was huge and she enjoyed it very much saying it reminded her of her childhood. We also had some queso...it was not what we had expected, tasted very buttery. But we were hungry and ate it anyways. They also serve refried beans with the chips and salsa...which is always a plus. Everyone else also enjoyed their meals and cocktails. By the time we left there were lots of other people there. We had a good time and our experience was enjoyable. Phenomenal service! No sooner had we stepped inside, a woman greeted us with a huge smile, got us seated, menus in hand and waters on the table. The only reason it took a bit to order was us just trying to make a decision from all the options. The food arrived so quick! Humongous portions. I'm not sure what the others on here are talking about. This place had some of the best pozole I have had in a long time. My wife had ceviche and it was tender and delicious. (Especially the octopus) We would absolutely eat here again. Servers were attentive and friendly. read more

Review for 8/28/20. As I start to write the review for this place over a month and a half ago, I notice the 2.5 star average it has and think, "That's generous." Plusses (+) +Food was hot +Jarritos was sweet (it's bottled, you can't mess that up) +The guy who came by with chips and beans was sweet & friendly +The chips and beans were great...but don't expect to get that refilled Minuses (-) -I was seated next to the kitchen door...and later thought to myself this could be good so they have to see me in case I need something...WRONG -There was no prompting from my server, she just stood there in silence and waited for me to begin speaking. When I had qtns about the menu, her responses were inscrutable -A different server brought out my food, first to a wrong table. When she realized her mistake and was corrected by another, she drops it off at my table, WITHOUT LOOKING AT ME AND WALKS INTO THE KITCHEN...ummm, WTF? -No one ever checked to see how I was doing. I can't imagine the effort they put in to avoid eye contact with me since I was literally sitting next to the kitchen door Super Minuses (!) ! The food was something I could have made if I took day old Taco Bell guacamole, cheese that was hiding in the back of my fridge, and the worst cut of meat you could buy...like back-alley squirrel meat ! Of course, the only way I could get my bill was to literally stand up, go to the front counter, and loiter next to the register The Mazatlans in the Portland Metro are already pretty subpar...good to know that it's their business model. One star is generous. Came for an early dinner Saturday. Being from Los Angeles we were excited to find the staff was all Hispanic. I grew up in San Fernando. Our delight was short lived. My mother ordered a tamal off the senior menu. The waitress got very irritated and we had to show her the menu. She stated that was wrong but she'd give e it to us anyway. We should have run, but we didn't. Our dinner arrived, the beans tasted fishy. The enchiladas had no flavor. My moms tamal was ok but the one my husband got was not steamed long enough. The mass was raw and mushy. Ok lesson learned. Then later that evening we all paid the price for trying the place. None of us felt good. My mother was sick. AVOID THIS PLACE. Rude and bad food. Double whammy. We have gone to several other restaurants in this chain. Never a problem. This one was terrible. read more

The food was very tasty. Served quickly . However I will not be coming back. The waitress was extremely rude . Snapped us to hurry up and order because she is busy. She rolled her eyes when we asked to order drinks as well food. Actually said..."oh you want drinks? Make it quick there's a lot people here." I asked for sugar substitute for my iced tea. She told me they did not have any. My daughter looked over and saw some on another table and was able to ask the buser if we could have it. If I could give zero or negative stars, I would. Our older Hispanic waitress was rude as Hell. She passed by us many times in the 20 minutes we were waiting to have our order taken. Four times she said "I'll be right with you", as she kept going to the register to ring up take out. She finally made it to us so I started to order our drinks. We got to the third drink and she said "I'm gonna stop you right there! Are you even gonna order any food?" I assured her we were but we should have just walked out right then. We continued ordering for myself, my daughter, and my three grandchildren. She rolled her eyes numerous times at us when we had a question about what we were wanting to order. Then she came back to clarify my order. She asked if I had ordered two cheese and one beef enchilada or one cheese and two beef. I told her I had ordered two chicken and one beef. She said "That's not what you said!" I've never ordered a cheese enchilada in my life and my daughter said she heard me order two chicken and one beef. We felt like an inconvenience to her. She only checked on us once and that's only because she wanted to know why I was up talking to people at a nearby table. I explained that we knew them and she turned and walked away. I had to flag her down to get a refill of our sodas. My daughter and I had decided to switch to diet soda mid-meal. She charged us for two more sodas instead of just refills! My daughter left a $3 tip, which is more than she deserved! We usually tip 20%-30%. My tip to her is "Be nicer to your customers!" The food was pretty good but sadly, we won't be back due to the bad attitude of our waitress. read more

Like another commented on here the servers seemed like they were angry or something but they rarely came to my table. Had to wait quite a while for refills even though it wasn't busy. Lunch June 15, 2019 We've eaten here in past years and the food was ok. They must have gotten a new cook that is going to take them on a downward trend. Based on our lunch, I doubt I would go there again. I had 2 chicken tacos for lunch which were ok nothing I couldn't get in a Taco Bell. I also ordered a Chicken Chimichanga, rice and beans to go which I wanted for dinner. I like Mexican food. We spend 3 months in San Carlos Mexico every year. Back to the Chimichanga, when I open the take-out container I knew I was in trouble when I saw the Chimichanga was more like a sandwich done in one of those sandwich presses. It was pressed flat not deep fried as it should have been. The overall flavor of the meal was bland so after a few bites it went into the trash. read more

A-OK is good, right? Right. Well-- so is Mazatlan Mexican Restaurant. Not great, spectacular, or take-your-breath-away awsome.... But it is good. And good Mexican food is hard to come by. Because I was at the dentist yesterday, my criteria for choosing lunch today was one word: soft. So I ordered a combo plate with a tamale and a cheese enchilada. It came with a generous side of orange rice (I've never figured out what it is about orange that makes it the optimum color for a Mex side-dish -- but it's the gold [orange] standard, isn't it?) Basically, it was just over-cooked rice that leaned orange. There was also a generous side of refried beans, which were much like all other refried beans; and a big scoop of very good guacamole. The tamale was a long way from the tamales I'm used to -- very large pile of filling surrounded by masa. LOTS of masa. The balance was off -- waaaaay too much masa for the filling. But the filling alone was fine, and the masa was mushy enough that it was easy to extricate the porky goodness from it's smothering of masa and -- I suspect -- lard. If it wasn't lard, it should have been. The masa itself was unseasoned, so when applied to the filling, it diluted what seasoning was there -- making the whole a bit bland. But -- as I said, the filling alone was fine. The cheese enchilada, however, was excellent. It was filled with enough cheese to be tasty, with a bit more melted on top along with some chili-ish sauce. Add a bit of their table salsa, and it was a very good cheese enchilada.. Nothing on the plate was greasy -- always a good sign. And, the table salsa had a nice afterburn of heat on the tongue. Husband confirmed that his chicken taquitos were tasty and had plenty of chicken. Good lunch. I'm still on my search for some really really REALLY great Mexican food -- but until it shows up -- I can live with good. :D read more
