We love seafood stew, adobo has big quantity of pork shoulder, Beet salad is good.. just one small thing: when waitress ask us any drinks we opt to just water, she ask us bottled water or tap water, We didn't think much just choose bottled water ( a bottle size like red wine) it turned out each bottle of water cost $10, we (5 of us) consumed 2 bottles in the meal, and at the same time when I looked at other tables, all have "tap" water served ( a glass jar of water with a piece lemon inside maybe..) La Costanera was one of our favorite restaurants on the coast, but it has started to go downhill. The dishes have been very salty lately and the service is extremely slow despite the restaurant only being at partial capacity. Additionally, the prices are exorbitant for what you are served. We don't mind paying higher prices for high quality ingredients, but unfortunately, this place does not warrant its price tag. Go to Limon in Redwood City for better Peruvian food! read more

It's always good vibes at La costanera, except during my most recent visit we got served raw fish. On a Friday in early April we visited half moon bay to celebrate a couple milestones for my family. We ordered the lomo saltado, arroz chaufa, and pescado costanera and some mimosas. The arroz chaufa is excellent. For some reason they only refunded 1/3 of the dish after we clearly showed them part of the fish was still raw. It was literally cold/frozen to the bite. Why does refunding 1/3 of the dish make sense? Even if the logic is that we ate some of it, what we ate gave us a stomachache and could have been parasites at worst? I understand the restaurant didn't have many people during that time and the margins were slim on a Friday, but by the time it was getting late the tables started to fill up. Disappointed read more

We've attempted to come here a few times without reservations, but the wait has always been too long (more than an hour), and they are sometimes short staffed and honest about it. So imagine my surprise when I grabbed a nice patio table on Easter Sunday, no less! On the day we visited, there was live music and a great vibe on the patio since the weather was great. The menu is long and has a good selection of cebiches, Peruvian staples (like lomo saltado), and quite a few small plates to share. Upon sitting down you'll also be greeted with a plate of potato chips with a vinegary dipping sauce. We've always enjoyed their seafood dishes, and this time we got the tuna cebiche, the palta relleno (stuffed avocado), the yucca croquettes, and a scallop dish that I forgot the name of (atop more potatoes and avocado). Honestly everything was delicious, especially the avocado -- the fried chicken bits, a bit like burnt ends, chewy and savory, paired perfectly with the creamy avocado. The restaurant is beautifully decorated, with high ceilings, nautical decor and beautiful views along the water. Staff are very friendly and attentive. I started with the honey moon bay which had chamomile infused gin and the pineapple and honey made it a bright, flavorful drink. My partner got the berry mocktail and he loved the fresh fruit and mint accents. We ordered multiple appetizers to share. We started with the ceviche pescado, it had a delicious lime bite and tasted fresh- they did charge us extra for chips, it was not included with the order. My other favorites were the shrimp tequenos and chorizo empanadas. The tequenos were perfectly crispy with amazing dipping sauces with a yummy shrimp and cheese inside. The empanada also had amazing flavors, and the dough consistency complimented the meat perfectly. I was not a huge fan of the Lagostinos, I didn't like the smoky sauce on top, but my partner loved it. Perfect celebratory lunch spot to complete your half moon bay trip. The menu had so many options and everything we ordered was extremely fresh. I'd definitely reccommend trying the ceviche sampler - wasn't a huge fan of the chips we had to order on the side to scoop them but the fish was sooo good. It's also really filling. The palta rellena was a unique dish that was good too. Yucca fries made for a great side. I did find the tequeños de camarones to be just okay. We came at 4 PM on a Saturday and it was a beautiful day to sit outside. The ambiance makes you feel like you're on vacation. However, despite the restaurant being basically empty, the service was pretty lacking. It took our server a lot of time to clear out plates, bring our boxes, and get us the check. Came for my brother's bday, helmed by Peruvian chef Carlos Altamirano, it frequently appears on the Michelin Guide. The food and cocktails are a blend of traditional and modern and the interior design features the same theming. We were seated near the outside doors which is a terrible position, it felt like a column was blocking our view and every time a patron or staff would go in or out we would be blasted by cold air. We've had plenty of Peruvian so we tried some atypical entrees. I don't know if these are very unpopular to order because it took a really long time for the mains to come out after the appetizers and each entree had something majorly wrong with it. Gin Tonic: Reminded me of how it is in the UK, has more controlled garnishing of lemon peel, basil, and berries. Tasted fine. Ceviche Tasting: sample sizes of fresh fish, ahi tuna, and a mix of fish, shrimp, squid, and mussels. The portions were great for our table of 5 and they were especially good with the house made potato chips. These were so good we were really looking forward to the entrees. Yuca Croquettes: Yuca stuffed with chorizo and raisins. With Peruvian yellow chili pepper curry. Tasted incredible but the garnishing made it feel dragged through a garden and completed with some of the more delicate flavors. There was also way too much curry on bottom and all the hard work forming and frying the yucca balls seemed wasted because the curry made it soggy. Peruvian Paella: Mussels, squid, clams, and prawns with a Peruvian pepper base and shrimp broth. This was super watery and confused me, a lot of the yelp pictures also looked like rice in broth and I thought maybe Peruvian Paella is supposed to be like that but I looked up some Peruvian Paella recipes and it doesn't seem wet. Pescado a lo Macho: Roasted fish over seafood stew (Mussels, clams, calamari, and shrimp), mushrooms, in arocoto-paprika sauce, and served with coconut rice. The fish and mushrooms were fine but the rice was undercooked and hard, it was the base for the fish and every bite was unpleasant because of it. Service started fine and then became so slow to the point I had to walk around the restaurant looking for our server so we could get the check. For the accolades and price I felt like the dishes had too many basic mistakes and the service wasn't great, we enjoyed the Peruvian food truck that used to be parked outside much better. read more

An absolute stunning location combined with a menu that showcases Peruvian Cuisine's finest points, La Costanera has it all for an impressive night out. Tucked far away from the city, the restaurant used to be in Pacifica, where in 2012 and 2013 they were awarded a Michelin star. The new location is in Half Moon Bay, still complete with ocean views. The first (!) bar is just past the host stand and before the staircase (!!) leading to the main dining room. The decor is phenomenal and the lighting during dinner sets it just right. The food. Fantastic. Exquisite. Fulfilling for the heart and soul, not just the stomach. -Pulpo a la Parrilla- an excellent small plate. Smokey from the grill and full of citrus from the salsa criolla -Chicharrones de la Casa, Calamari- no surprises here, a nicely breaded and fried calamari, with peppers and onions to boot. -Black Cod Aguachile- with leche de tigre and accompaniments. A fantastic special of the night, truly exemplifies fresh, citrusy flavors with a delightfully buttery cut of raw black cod -Chuletitas de Cordero- lamb chops with potato gratin and chimichurri. Very rarely do we order lamb chops, but we're so glad we did! Beautifully cooked to just medium rare, it must have been glazed or marinated in something because there was no typical gamey taste with these chops Friends also ordered the Ahi Tuna Tartare, Lomo Saltado, and Pescado a lo Macho, which were all inspiring, fantastic, yes. We also shared a plethora of desserts: -Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta- with organic Papua New Guinea (coffee dusting probably), passion fruit redux- loved the touch of coffee with vanilla -Chocolate Carlitos- flourless chocolate terrine- a favorite dessert, solid points, no notes. -Lava cake- a classic, served just right; hot enough to flow but not enough to burn -Alfajores- cookie sandwiches with dulce de leche- classic caramel cookie sando, can't go wrong! We've been to LC since its location on Montara Beach. This one has a different vibe, but still very HMB. Overall food was great as always. Drinks are pretty awesome, too. Busy weekend since it was in 70s hovering 80s. We always get the tender lomo saltado, and they had a special salmon tiradito, burger for the teen, clam chowder was nice and creamy and dulce de leche. We were disappointed that every table got the chips and dip some even refill but we never did, and I thought it was an orderable appetizer item. Then I recall getting them previously. So at the end of our meal we asked our server and she says oh yes that's complimentary and it's the busser's job. The pescado a lo macho is THE dish to get. 5/5, like a seafood curry. It might sound funky but the seafood fish (I think swordfish was the fish of the day), cooked in the coconut sauce was divine. My husband got this dish and I could not stop taking bites. It also came with a LOT of food. Lomo saltado 3/5, was yummy but a tad on the saltier side. The dish didn't come with too much meat, and I was expecting more for the price. Empanadas: 4/5, solid. We got the chicken and was yummy with the sauce Yucca croquettes: 3/5, the rice balls didn't really taste like much and were kinda bland, better with eating them with the onions and other toppings Vanilla bean panna cotta 5/5, this was delicious. The passion fruit syrup makes it feel like an explosion of flavor in your mouth, balanced well with the vanilla bean taste of the panna cotta. It was also nice to stroll along the water and walk the meal off. Across the street was this cute little outdoor coffe spot ...with lounging areas, and fire pits. On this particular day we got to see two little seal pups playfully bobbing up and down in the water below us. People walked about with their dogs, surfers submerged from the water, RV 's had some sort of rest stop, and several little taverns were also along the path. Although it may sound like a lot of activity ... it really just worked ... to create a quaint little spot surrounding the restaurant. As far as food, I had an appetizer of scallops, potatoes and avocado, some wonderful plantains and a buttery crab sandwich ... my friend had a fish stew with prawns, squid and swordfish in coconut sauce and paired with coconut rice. Thought about making a trek out to HMB this past weekend and decided to find a lunch spot. We came across La Costanera and saw that it was dog-friendly and live music on the weekend, so it was an easy decision. Highly recommend making reservations in advance! We ordered the ceviche of the day ($29), causa marina ($26), yuca frita ($14), macho ($39). The ceviche was very good and fresh. I prefer ceviche over poke because I like the tang from the lime and I think it's healthier compared to the saucier Hawaiian version (I realize it's completely different from a cultural standpoint). The causa marina was presented beautifully and looked like a little cake. It comes with mashed potatoes, avocado, and seared scallops. I probably could have happily finished this dish on my own and not shared. The macho is a seafood soup that comes with coconut rice and it was delightful! The seafood (fish, clams, mussels, etc). were all cooked perfectly and nothing was overcooked - which is often the case for these kinds of dishes. The coconut rice was also very good and the coconut aroma was definitely there. The misses: yuca frita wasn't anything exciting. I would have preferred a spicier dipping sauce or something to make it taste a little more interesting. I LOVE yuca, but got bored munching on these yuca fries. Also, we asked for a side of hot sauce and got charged $1 for a tiny, miniscule serving. It was laughable, really. The hot sauce was NOT worth it which made it even worse. It was cold and tasted more like a barely spicy tomato palace cleanser. Not something I would be proud to serve and label as hot sauce. I would really appreciate it if staff would tell us in advance if things are going to cost extra, even if it's a nominal fee. Service overall was pretty slow. They were busy and tried to be friendly, but oftentimes our requests would be forgotten and I would have to ask another staff member. The other thing I noticed was that all the other tables around us seemed to get complimentary chips and we did not....I realized this quite late in our meal and didn't even bother asking. The chicharrones and ceviche were good, but the $24 for 3 shrimp seemed overpriced, and not thrilled with the surprisingly warm beer. Potato chips and dipping sauce were good. Server could've warned us about the end of happy hour or given us a couple minutes' grace period, as he was pretty missing in action. I was expecting a tourist trap since this restaurant was the biggest building I saw during my trip to Halfmoon Bay. Instead I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent food and the nice ambiance. I had a trio of ceviches. All of them hit the spot perfectly. The portion sizes were generous and actually matched the price. My yucca croquettes were delicious and novel. I can see why this restaurant had an entry in the Michelin Star website, so that tells me this restaurant had a Michelin star(s) at one point. This will be 3 parts review. First: I made reservations and when we arrived 2 hosts greeted us. Confirmed my reservation and then I asked about a seating with a view. They said they are are booked for the night (a lie). So then we had to settle for the low floor. It was window seats but with our backs turned. So we asked for the next table over which was a table and chairs instead of the booth. The hostess (blonde hair, didn't catch her name) proceeded to tell us that that table needed to be cleaned off first before we can be seated. Then she left us standing there as she walked back to the front. She did not say anything nor did she tell anyone to clean that table we asked for. Another server finally saw us just standing there and asked if we've been helped. We told her what the hostess said to us and the server told us to go back to the front to wait for the table to cleaned. So we Went back to the front. At this time both hostesses saw that we were frustrated and told us that there was a table upstairs for us if we wanted to go up. We said yes & they said ok go upstairs. No explaining of who is taking us or greeting us. I had to ask. So for first impression and the service of both hostesses tonight 4/11, I give it a 1 star. Hostesses are the front face of your restaurants, please provide better training on how they should be properly directing your guests and not leaving them confused or having to ask where to go. This second part is a rating on our server, Andrew. You get a 5 out of 5. Thanks for making it up for the mishap downstairs. Your service was wonderful and you were very attentive. The downstairs has a bar and there was complimentary wine tasting. The restrooms are very clean. The decor is very beautiful. Our server Ivonne was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. We got the half dozen oysters, beef empanadas, grilled octopus, 16 oz steak and the paella. The grilled octopus was delicious, served on a bed of mashed potatoes and creamy chimichurri sauce. The Arroz Con Mariscos is really the star. I hope to god they don't ever take this off the menu. The dish came with all of the sea creatures. I love, and they put two pretty little scallop shells in it with scallops intact. It is a bit soupier than your traditional paella, but this is just how I like it. As you enter the restaurant you are welcomed by a very nice waiting area with a staircase to the upper dining area. Just past the hostess area is a quaint bar. The hostess was polite and friendly. Our waiter was the best. He was friendly, and helpful. It was refreshing to have a young adult who could carry on a conversation. We started with a couple of cocktails- old fashioned and a margarita. They were some of the best we've had. Next we had the Tequeños de Camarones. Oh boy, I could have eaten a dozen of them- dangerously good. However, I prefer the prior location, which had better ocean view, more intimate, and better food. Started the meal with ceviche sampler. It was good, not special. The shrimp cocktail was similar to what can be bought from Costco. Not worth it. I ordered a half dozen oysters, which were completely empty of their liquor. This was our first time dining here.. We have passed by this restaurant for 3 years.. How very sad.. we could not have felt more welcome! Our waiter " Drew" AKA Andrew, was Exceptional! His recommendations were spot on from the cocktails to the ceviche flight to the quinoa crusted prawns w/ a sweet potato puree, to the BBQ Ribs Peruvian Style. Seriously.. this was a much needed experience, truly the perfect ending to a very taxing week. Thank you everyone, from the sweet hostess to the entire team ! We will be back.. over and over again. There was a mixup when we walked into the restaurant (we had arrived at the wrong time for our reservation but were not told that was why there was such a long delay in seating us) but otherwise service was great. The food was delicious - two people in our party said that these were the best empanadas they've ever had. I also really enjoyed the fried chicken sandwiched in the avocado. Tuesday night early dinner with wife, love the decor and the spiral staircase up to dining area facing outaide with all glass windows. Nice view. Our server, (i think her name was Karen?), very attentive and very friendly. We had the grilled fish, (amazing sauce with just the right amount of citrus hint), and the seafood rice, (arroz de marisco is one of our favorites) tongue skewer, (chewy but very tender, subtle flavored sauce), definitely recommend. The house special cocktail, im not a cocktail person but I ended up getting 2. We started date night right coming to La Costanera, 10/10 would recommend. read more
