I write this to you, my dear reader, from my shoebox apartment in the Lower East Side of Manhattan where it is currently 41 degrees and raining (my friends tell me this is good weather for December), dreaming of going back in time 4 days where I was sitting in La Rústica with only 2 buttons of a white linen shirt buttoned, watching the sun set between sips of my After Surf Spritz that came in a chilled fishbowl wine glass after a long day of being EXHAUSTED from doing nothing else than sitting on a beach chair soaking in the sun all day like I am a photosynthesizing plant. That was probably an egregious run on sentence ahahaha but whatever.
La Rústica, or for my non-Italian speaking friends, the Rustic, is my death row meal if my death row meal was limited to restaurants to dine at within a golf carts ride of the Punta Mita compound.
"Johnny, your favorite restaurant on your Mexico trip was an Italian place?" Yes, yes it was. After 6 consecutive meals of Mexican food my palate lowkey needed a break.
The interior here is breath-taking, as it is the perfect amalgamation of top tier Mexican meets top tier coastal-Italian design. Easily the most inviting and inspiring interior of any place we went to when we were down here. Upon sitting at our 6-top, I couldn't help but feel like I was inside of the Great Deku Tree from the Ocarina of Time game on the N64. Real ones will get that reference, but if you're not a real one I will break it down:
The space is engulfed by a big umbrella-like roof that reaches maybe 50 feet up, 14 huge orb lights hanging down, and the pillar holding the roof up becomes a circular bar at the center of the restaurant. A fantastic idea as the restaurant is built around the space which truly makes this ambiance what it is.
Okay I'm done romanticizing the interior my fault, onto the food:
I normally HATE digital menus as it causes the phone monster to swallow everyones attention and ability to be present, but this one had high quality pictures of EVERYTHING which was actually super useful.
As tradition holds, we started with a margherita pizza for the table because that is objectively the best appetizer you can get: everyone gets a slice or two to warm up their stomachs, and a good slice will have your anticipation climbing for the meal to come. This 14 inches of bread, tomato sauce and cheese was so delicious that my brother got one for his main course and we ordered a Pizza from here the next night after our stomachs were unfulfilled after the mouse food over at Hector's. I live in NY and have been to Italy a fair share of times (Oh yeah I travel haha) and this pizza can hold its own against any of the heavyweight pizza destinations. A dark horse working in the shadows....
I got the shrimp burger for my main because I've never seen a shrimp burger on a menu in my life and I take pride in attacking the unknown head on, no fear. Everything you've ever wanted lies on the other side of fear... It was really good, but I probably wouldn't order it again ahahaha. Everyone else was obsessed with their entrees though and my Dad wouldn't stop talking about this place the rest of the trip.
Thank you La Rústica, I hope we meet again one day. I need another After Surf Spritz more than I need to breath.
