My wife and I chose this restaurant for a special date night because it is advertised as a higher-end dining experience. We spent around $80 for two entrees and were expecting a great evening. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing. When my meal arrived, there was a hair in the food. My wife quietly let the server know, and the server handled it politely and removed the plate. However, only two minutes later the manager brought the dish back and simply said, "Here you go, sir." There was no apology, no acknowledgment of the issue, and the dish had clearly not been remade--just the hair removed. Because of the situation, I could not finish the meal, and my wife took most of hers to go. When the bill arrived, there was no discount, no removal of my entrée charge, and still no apology from management. The server was kind (and we tipped them well because this wasn't their fault), but management's response was unacceptable for any restaurant, especially one claiming to offer a premium dining experience. After we left, my wife called to speak with the manager, who stated that the hair was "only on the potatoes," so he simply replaced the potatoes. He also said he did not remove the charge because we "didn't ask." To us, basic customer service would dictate that the manager apologize and proactively make it right without the customer having to request it, especially when a meal is sent back for a hygiene issue. My wife also reached out to the owner, who never responded. As a military veteran looking forward to a rare date night with my wife, I was very disappointed. There is black mold growing in the cooler, the dish washer/water is cold (because they have a residential hot water heater so it doesn't make enough hot water for commercial cleaning), there is cross contamination...and I could probably say more. This restaurant looks like it should be fabulous. Unfortunately, looks can be deceiving. My friend ordered a Caesar salad that came out with brown edges on the romaine. I'm not sure how brown lettuce even made it to a plate! Totally unacceptable. I ordered the Mahi special based on server recommendation. The mahi was overcooked and first bite had a slightly fishy taste. The server was not attentive and had to be flagged down for a second glass of wine. It was delivered after I'd finished my meal. The checks were incorrect and had to be reworked multiple times. I would not recommend trying this restaurant with other options in town with much better service and food. read more

We had a great experience at La Scala last night. You can serve good food, even great food, but if the service is not up to par, it can ruin the experience. Our service was more than up to par. Christian was our waiter and was key to a birthday celebration we won't forget. The Shrimp Scampi appetizer was delicious. We ordered the Pasta Antonio and Veal Saltimbocca, both fantastic and I will order again. We had to do desert so went with the Chocolate Torte with vanilla gelato which was a great way to finish a wonderful meal, and it was flourless! Excellent food with excellent service! We came at 10:15 and found out they were closing at 11. They could've said they couldn't accommodate us but instead they seated us even though we're the only table in the restaurant. Our dishes were so delicious with fresh local ingredients and very reasonably priced for such an incredible meal. April went above and beyond to take amazing care of us. When we walked past the place it looked a bit odd, one table in the window. But inside was actually stairs leading to a bar area which looked a little bit cheap . Following the bar area was the actual restaurant area . Nice table settings, but rest of Ambiente sad. Food was not bad, although the menu consists of too many fancy items such as oysters, caviar or lobster . Cheesecake was very dense and sweet. But the service needs improvement. While 2 of us were still eating our entree the server already picked up 2 empty plates and asked for dessert. We felt really rushed. When the check came there was no one to sign the bill and it took 5 minutes until we were able to get the attention of one of the servers. Service- the service was good. April made some great suggestions. She was prompt and courteous. Food-Very good. I made a happy plate. The smoke dome for my meal was cool. Added a good deal of flavor to the meat. I will say I am a saltaholic at times, and I think the meat was a little under seasoned. Just a bit. The entrées were good. The salad was wilted. Cons-Ok. The old fashion was good. However, if you have a great ambiance, cloth napkins, and table clothes, I should get a larger ice cube. And I should not have to ask if you do have them. This was our third visit to La Scala, having decided to give them one more shot after the previous two visits had been ok but not great. But we were optimistic because we had liked the ambiance of the place. When we walked in there was thick smoke from the kitchen, as they had accidentally burnt a dish. It was not a pleasant smell like steak being grilled, but a burnt smell. The restaurant must be poorly ventilated since the smoke remained at ceiling height the entire hour plus we were there. Each time I stood up from our table to go ask for service, get drinks from the bar, or go to the restroom, I was assaulted by the bad smell of the apparent burnt food incident from sometime before our arrival. Although the food was overpriced it was alright so no complaint on the kitchen staff's skills. One star earned. We had escargo, Ceasar salad, ribeye steak and scottish salmon. All were descent but late on arrival. The service was awful. Everytime we ordered something, whether it was drinks, appetizers, or main course, we spent an eternity waiting for the waitress or somebody to return to our table. I might excuse this if it happened once and was apologized for, but it happened every time. We had to go get our own drinks from the bar next door, since our waitress disappeared yet again after taking our drink order. Plus the waitress did not remove two items from our bill which we never received, even though she had said she would earlier. We had to have the bill corrected before paying. If there were hidden cameras and we were being pranked for TV, it would have at least explained why we were being totally ignored. But no, this was really happening and there was no explanation for it. This was absolutely the worst dining experience of my life. It's sad but I have to confess that we will never return to La Scala again. Never read more

I don't know why my husband and I have given La Scala a couple of second chances to redeem their poor quality food. We went there once again for his birthday in June and unfortunately the 4th time was not a charm. When we walked into the upstairs dining room, the place was covered in acrid smoke. At first we thought something had burned in the kitchen and proper ventilation would remedy it, but the smoke got worse as the evening wore on. The small plates, salad and entree ordered were all terrible and not properly prepared. The only redeeming dish was the appetizer of Martha's Vineyard oysters on the half shell which were quite good - but, of course they didn't have to be prepared by anyone, merely shucked. Our server was pleasant and somewhat attentive - we would have ordered another round of drinks but gave up and asked for our check instead. This is not a fine dining restaurant. Extremely pricey for food that sucked. Will never go back. read more

The ambience was cute.. but the food.. A little disappointed in the food, I got the cauliflower salad and the scottish salmon. The cauliflower salad almost felt like it was stored in the fridge and just served, you could taste the fridge in the food, I added grilled chicken to the salad and that was also cold and seemed like it was right out of the refrigerator and extremely salty! Similarly the salmons taste was good and cooked the way I asked for it but it was so salty that it was inedible. The mashed potatoes were extremely salty as well. The only good thing about this meal was the green beans. Sad but u fortunate as I was really looking forward to this dinner. The bartender also wasn't the friendliest as I was trying get a drink at the bar. At best 2 stars, I wanted it to be so much more. read more

Well what a disappointment. Let's start at the beginning. We decided to go to La Scala for my birthday dinner. We entered from Broad Street to blaring music. No one around to greet us. Went upstairs and was told only serving upstairs. That's fine but we had to figure it out. ( the blaring music was in the bar which you walk through to get to dining). We were seated in the main dining room which was a bit warm from the west sun. The first thing that really caught my eye was how sad and tired the dining area was with cheesy dressing screens to hide storage. Additionally, it was fairly icky to see how dirty the dining chairs were. Seriously! You are supposed to be a fine dining restaurant! No dirty upholstery. No stains please. Yuck. And my chair was not stable so my husband changed it out. That was my sign. But we continued. Our waiter was nice enough but clearly lacked knowledge, experience and training. We were served room temp water, no ice. We ordered the cheese board which was fairly pricey. I did ask the waiter what would be on the board but he was clueless. The board was salami and pepperoni and a and several common cheeses you could get at Publix. No Brie, Camembert or other fine cheeses, no fruit or nuts, no bread. The worst however was the stale crackers that were served with it. STALE! Next we ordered a salad and decided to split the pear salad. What a silly salad. Brown edge greens, one thin slice of pear - literally one slice! A few sugared pecans ( not walnuts) and blue cheese. We laughed at the one tiny slice of pear. $10 for that btw. The best was coming. My pasta dish was to include shrimp. It did. And was overcooked and rubbery-one shrimp looked as though it had exploded. It was nasty. In fairness the pasta was fine but the shrimp were clearly not freshly cooked. My husband had the duck breast but it was so raw that it was inedible. The don't mean rare - I mean raw! He did send it back and it was better. My daughters pasta was ok. We had to ask for: bread, non soggy crackers, ice, water, Parmesan, pasta spoon, cocktails (btw they have no clue how to serve Prosecco) and the waiter never returned to ask if we would like more drinks. We finally tracked him down and I told him I could not eat my shrimp. In fairness, he had the manager come and she was nice, removed the charge for my dish and discounted price on charcuterie board. I also mentioned to her that her waiter missed great opportunity for drink orders. She was kind and stated they had never had complaints about my pasta before. Ok. Whatever. And that the crackers were straight from the package. Sorry, not buying that. In the end they tried to make it right. My feedback to the establishment1) make sure you update your website to match the menu you are serving; 2) don't call yourself "fine" dining if you don't have properly trained chefs- it's not fine; 3) don't serve old food; 4) TRAIN AND EDUCATE YOUR STAFF; and 5) for heaven's sake give your dining room a thoroughly good cleaning especially upholstery. We will not likely return to La Scala unless major improvements are made. This is not a fine dining experience but mediocre at best. Vastly over-priced and poorly prepared! Save your money, time and aggravation. You'll do just as well at your local Applebee's. read more

What has happened in a months time. We went to la scala in July and the food was wonderful. But we went last week and things have changed. The waiter improperly served the bottle of wine, the veal Marsala was so over salted I had to scrape off the gravy to eat the meat. It was served with roasted potatoes not mashed and I think I had a serving of Brussels sprouts and broccoli that was so overcooked it was brown. Need a new chef and wait staff! read more

My wife and I reside in Texas, we have been coming to Rome once a year to visit family for over 30 years. From a restaurant and dining perspective, Rome is quite backwards, they are stuck in a time warp going back to the 50's. 75% of dining options are nothing more than fast food establishments and 80% of new restaurants on Broad Street fail. Although economically, Rome residents could support a "nice" restaurant, they choose not to. Their idea of a fancy sit down restaurant is Outback or Olive Garden. With that said, La Scalia has consistently served us excellent food. The establishment ascetically speaking is very, very tired. With minimal investment, it could be cleaned up, but it hasn't been touched in years. But this is Rome, expect nothing less. Our server was Randy, his service was nothing short of outstanding. He had a firm grasp of the menu and wine parings. We ordered the Bone-in Ribeye and a special modification pasta with our favorite ingredients in a creamy wine sauce, pure gold, Randy was quite accommodating with our modifications. We asked for the steak to be topped with fresh rosemary sprigs and sliced on the meat board they always serve this dish on. EVERYTHING was served as requested, spot on presentation! The flavor of every component of our dinner was perfect, absolutely fabulous. The steak was cooked perfectly, seasoned perfectly and was flavorful as could be. Pasta was perfectly Al Dente, sauce was outstanding. I saw the Chef and waived him over. I complemented him on everything, Service, flavor and presentation. My wife and I travel the world and fine dine continually. I complemented the chef by stating, "Your meal was as fine as any other restaurant we have visited, thank you." So give La Scala a shot, great menu, great service, no complaints. read more

1 star off because owner is an @$$hole and the waiter did not even know what pancetta is. We sat outside. Bread is excellent. Charged $2 per itty bitty glass of club soda. I had the salmon risotto. Sublime. My friend had some chicken mushroom pasta she said was good. Her hubby had the cauliflower salad, small but the Gorgonzola dressing is a great touch. His Brussels sprouts were yummy. I've been in the industry for 30 years, and I enjoyed everything! My girlfriend and I went here for her birthday earlier this month. The ambience was wonderful, dark but not too dark and quiet enough to have a conversation. Our server, Bella, was very attentive and did a great job! The cocktails were tasty and well made, and the quality of the food was outstanding! The portabello mushroom appetizer was very tasty and that it comes with burrata cheese really made my day! My girlfriend the Pasta Antonio and loved it. It was rich and creamy and the pancetta added the right amount of salt to the dish. I opted for the lamb and absolutely loved it! It was cooked to a perfect medium rare and tasted great! We had a piece of chocolate cake and a piece of lemon cake for dessert, and both were outstanding. Went here for a work dinner with a large group of people so they did the dinner buffet style. It was a beautiful location but the food was really not good. They offered salads, and then a chicken marsala breast with a mushroom marsala sauce and a pasta dish with a tomato sauce. What was odd was they didn't offer a plain pasta to pair with the marsala breast but instead had roasted potatoes (the only really flavorful dish) and steamed veggies. I was really very disappointed with the food, and we were not provided with water pitchers at our tables but were dependent upon the waitstaff to refill our glasses which only happened once in the several hours we were there. I even tried to flag down the waiters several times to try and get some more water as people were presenting and they never even came all the way back in to the room. That irked me. The dessert options were an over-sweet cannoli and these three tiny tarts made of a fruit paste which were not very appetizing. Based on this experience I'm not sure I'd ever go there on my own. read more

Stopped in for an italian place near the hotel. Menu pricing was in the $20 to $40 per plate range. Had a glass of wine. Tasted great. They brought out an amuse bouche (google it) bruschetta and a soup with a dallop of cream cheese. I suspected this was on of their pasta sauces and was confirmed when asked later. Both of these were good. I orderd the charcuterie board after I asked which meats and cheeses were going to be on it. The waitress brought out someone from the back who described it as 5 meats, 1 beef and 4 pork, and 4 cheeses which he described in detail. What arrived was 4 meats and 4 cheeses that were not what was described. However, the presentation was great and the onion jam and olives were great accompanyments. I ate half of this and saved room for my entree and asked that the rest be packaged to go. I found later that it was packaged meats, cheese, and bread but none of the great jams and sauces :( A short while later my littleneck linguini came to the table. It was good, i appreciated that they did not try to overpower the clams and the sauce was very light I would order this again but might try something else first. I took a look at the dessert tray and when asked was told that only the tiramisu and cannoli were house made. The tiramisu looked to be untraditional and more of a pudding and the cannoli was nothing special. I was convinced to try the tiramisu, and the one they brought out was not made correctly the ladyfingers were completely dry. They took it back no problems and confirmed that it was not correct and offered me something else on the house. I was told at that time that they also make the flourless chocolate cake but I was ready to go by then so I skipped it. Usually I check the bill unless I am at a nice (high priced) restaraunt expecting that the menu prices are the ones that ring up on the check. It being the place it was I did not check it and just handed over my card. Unfortunately this was not the case and I didn't catch it till after I returned to the hotel. The charcuterie board was listed at $17 in the menu but rang up at $22. I can't stand it when places mis-represent their pricing it feels like theft to me. I was planning on returning in the next few days but will likely skip it due to the pricing problem. read more

We dined at La Scala on December 30 to celebrate a birthday and an anniversary. We ordered our appetizers and then found out that the calamari was not available. We then ordered two charcuterie boards. When it came time to order our dinners, one of our party ordered the veal saltimbocca, the server took the orders to the kitchen and found out that the veal dish was not available. One more change in the order. Dessert...orders went out for tiramisu...they ran out of that, too.....Needless to say that we were a bit discouraged. The server should have been made aware of what was NOT on the menu for the evening, not coming back three times to let us know that our choices were unavailable. She also did not know how to open the wine bottle. I did speak with the manager later in the week as they were closed for a few days. He said that he was sorry. That's it!! If we had not been there for dinners before that evening, I am not sure that we would ever go back. We might choose to spend our money elsewhere with better service. Final note....do not embarrass your servers. Give them the information ahead of the game. read more

I recently visited family in Rome and went out to La Scala for a birthday dinner. The entrance is quite confusing --downstairs entrance has a deserted hostess bar and tables set. We had to wander upstairs through the bar to find a host/hostess. The wine list is quite good with some reasonably priced options. Food was delicious all around. Business dinner choice of a vendor while a group of us were working in Rome. We ordered several appetizers - calamari, octopus salad, pasta "purses", and scallops. Everything was very good, the scallops were especially full of flavor. The coffee was also very good, Green Mountain "Dark Magic". For dinner I ordered the filet with asparagus and Parmesan risotto. The steak was very tender and cooked perfect. We ordered several desserts, and everything was good except the key lime pie. It was the only disappointment in the meal, just a bit "fake". For such an authentic meal, this one item threw it off. Probably should just remove it from the menu so it doesn't cramp their style. read more
