Business dinner choice of a vendor while a group of us were working in Rome. We ordered several appetizers - calamari, octopus salad, pasta "purses", and scallops. Everything was very good, the scallops were especially full of flavor. The coffee was also very good, Green Mountain "Dark Magic". For dinner I ordered the filet with asparagus and Parmesan risotto. The steak was very tender and cooked perfect. We ordered several desserts, and everything was good except the key lime pie. It was the only disappointment in the meal, just a bit "fake". For such an authentic meal, this one item threw it off. Probably should just remove it from the menu so it doesn't cramp their style. read more

Nothing that a group of gals loves more than Italian food and a great glass of wine, am I right?! Unfortunately, what was supposed to be a lovely and relaxing evening celebrating a friend turned into a horrible experience. Service: We discovered La Scala through yelp and their coupon feature. I'm sad to report that the manager(owner?) refused to honor all of our coupons even though there were no limitations on use in the fine print, and our waitress even confirmed the coupons were accepted at the beginning. I have never experienced a more combative manager who managed to ruin our dinner with his rudeness (minus two stars). Food: Our entire group ordered several appetizers, bottles of wine, and entrees so it wasn't even that we were trying to be cheap. There were 11 different meals we tried and most of them were way overly salted (minus one star). The charcuterie board, olive oils, and calamari were all great. This is really your only upscale dining option in Rome, but it is lovely. On a street where the bars and restaurants change names every 6 months, La Scala has stayed around because it offers something sorely lacking on Rome-an adult dining option. Plus, after you're done being classy you can walk 20 feet to the bar and drink, smoke (after dining hours only) and enjoy local tunes. I've had so many awful dining experiences in Rome that I'll gladly pay extra to know I'm getting a meal that isn't frozen, fried, and made by a 14 yr old. If you're taking out parents, an employer, etc., I highly recommend just dropping the extra dough and relaxing to some Vivaldi in the dining room rather than risking hair-in-your-food catastrophe elsewhere. read more

For carry out, they must do better... The pasta dish had great flavor, but the $6 salad was just diced greens and 2 tomato quarters. Had to ask for bread and fork. Went to a comedy show- we were a total group of 4. All starving and ready to drink and have fun. The place was packed, but we managed to find some seats. There was no server for us and we couldn't get a drink in the over 2 hours that we were there. This restaurant not only lost money for the night, but 4 customers that will not come back. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars is for the great comedians. This place has done multiple comedy shows in the past and knows what to expect. We had to leave due to the poor service. read more

Service was good and attentive. Food was good. However when asked if I could swap the salad with soup the small up charge turned out to be the full price of the soup. The same thing with the side Instead of subbing a side of angel hair instead of polenta. They brought me the angel hair appetizer and the meal had polenta. And then charged for both. Went here tonight on a much needed date night. Britney, the server, was wonderful. Nice, sweet, and very attentive (she even let us move when the 93 degree sunshine came through the window.) The calamari was good, crisp, but very salty, a theme that would run through the rest of the meal. (Now I know why there are no salt shakers on the table.) My wife had to send her meal back to the kitchen and they did offer to make her something else but she thanked them and we left. Don't think we'll go here again. read more

We exited to take a rode trip from Marietta to Rome to try this restaurant given the good reviews. We ordered the warm burrata appetizer, my husband had the cream of mushroom soup as well to start. The soup was almost inedible it was so salty. We thought, ok, no big deal. It happens. When the appetizer arrived we realized that the chef perhaps has very heavy hand when it comes to salt. My husband had the shrimp and crab risotto. I had the portobello mushroom ravioli. Both very salty. Our server was attentive and timely although he did bring me the wrong ravioli initially. We are easy going and don't complain, but I don't think we will be back and I'm pretty sure there will be a full glass of water on our nightstands tonight!! read more

This was kind of a strange experience ... We unknowingly came into the back entrance and the place felt deserted. We almost left, but then ventured upstairs to see if we could find someone. The bar had several customers but the restaurant was all but empty. The waitress seemed unsure of her role, and abandoned us to the point that my husband acutally stood up to go looking for someone, but then a waiter took over and did a much better job. He brought us a tasty little amuse bouche, then bread with olive oil. Our salads and entrees (lamb chops and pear/cheese pasta purse) were very good. If we could be sure to have a better customer service experience next time, we'd be back for special occasions. read more

The appetizers and drinks were good. The service was great. However, I ordered a approx. $40 blue cheese ribeye medium rare and it was 1/2 inch thick, 50% gristle, and very well done. I asked for the person who cooked it to discuss the poorly cooked state and bad cut and he argued with me about internal temp and had no control over the cut. A $40 ribeye in Rome ga should be an inch thick, tender throughout and cooked to order, medium rare in this case. We were not looking for a comp or discount just very disappointing for the price and expectation of the place that they couldn't get a simple steal right. Plan on spending over $100 if you go. High end restaurant employing not so high end waters. Waiter said pasta wasn't made by hand in house, seafood brought in frozen. However, if you pick the right items you can have a fantastic meal. Every waiter, sommelier and bartender should know their stuff. Everything should be traditional. I'd prefer a Caesar salad made tableside. Including the egg and anchovy with fresh grated pecorino. Some of the dishes are A-1 and some just so so while the diner pays top prices. Went there with a work group but not by choice. I am weary of restaurants with linen and stuffy ambiance. Looking at the average rating, I am not surprised. We had to wait a long time to get service from the waitress. When she came and took orders for drinks, it took a long time to get them. The amount of waiting overall was not acceptable, and the place was not very busy (it was a Wednesday night). Our group got a variety of dishes, and I got the spaghetti bolognese, which was a soupy mess. For what I got, the price was not a good value. I would not return to this place on my own. The prices charged do not reflect the taste nor quality of the dish. You are paying mainly for image. They have a patron's wine rack on display, trying to give off an aura of sophistication. If the food were better tasting or higher quality than Maggiano's, then perhaps, but it is not. Not a good value, not recommended. read more

Friday evening 7/24/2020. Service was very poor. Waitress forgot to bring bread, forgot to serve wine, forgot to return to table with cracked pepper, forgot to bring bowl for empty mussel shells, didn't refill water glasses, didn't remember who ordered what when serving entrees, removed plates without first asking if diner was finished. At no time during the meal did the waitress return to the table to ask if the food was good or if we needed anything. Spoke to owner about the poor service who apologized but I will think twice before going there again. Plus, I'll share this bad experience with all my friends. read more

Certainly a 2 or 3 star location. I'll go with 2... So, let's break it down: Food: 4 star, most certainly. A menu that is not too overwhelming and dishes that satisfy. The scallop appetizer was excellent, veal was great, snapper was great, crab meat pasta was horrible, but then redemption came with an excellent cannoli for desert. Nice work. Drinks: 3 stars... a relatively straightforward wine selection partnered with a weak beer selection does not really give them much plus or minus there. I did find it strange when the place turned into a bar with a live band at 10pm, and yet their beer selection lacked... may have been the service... ah, yes... Service: 0 stars... I felt for our server. A bit of a bumbling and goofy guy, but he was giving it his best. A couple points to improve on: bring bread quickly, don't say the specials while you pour water unless you can do both gracefully (hint: you cannot), speed up on clearing the table, know your beer/wine selection, be honest when you don't know something, stop lying that there is a manager available when there clearly is not, and finally each time you go back to the kitchen, wipe the sweat off your face before you come back out. That should get you to 1 or 2 stars. The main reason this place failed on service was the return of a dish that tasted horrible (see "crab meat pasta"), an utter lie that a manager would come talk to us about it, and then the absurd request that we pay for the dish at the end. Listen kid, I saw you talking with the rest of your wait staff about the situation, but do what you know is right, and not what the people around you tell you to do... and you'll get into the 3 star category quickly. For now, you and your fake manager can take 0 stars in this category. Ambiance: 1 star... This place is quite casual. In fact, there were a bunch of folks from a tennis league there that evening that hadn't changed from the court... yes, it is that casual. Flip flops and a tank top would probably fly (if that's the way you fly), but otherwise, you can keep it to jeans and not feel out of place at all. The interior is badly in need of an update, and overall the place seems to be a great candidate for "Restaurant Impossible" or some other makeover show. There you have it... 4 categories, 8 total points... 2 star place. Get your customer service in order and a bit of a makeover and that old "la scala" magic can come right back. Pretty fancy decor. Good service, but the food just isn't quite up to par. I had the spinach cream, pancetta pasta, which was okay, but just didn't have enough seasoning for my taste. The wine list also was not terribly impressive, as it included Sutter Home. It was definitely fancy for Rome though, and the staff was very helpful and attentive. The bread was excellent as well. I would just recommend more flavorful dishes. It is trying so hard to be a fine dining refuge in Rome, but the quality just isn't there yet. read more

Easily the best meal I've had since moving to Georgia from Philadelphia five years ago. It's quite a bit more expensive than other offerings in the area, but you can't compare apples to oranges...La Scala is a cut above the other restaurants in Rome. The menu spans all types of food including pasta, steaks, chicken and seafood as well as a huge appetizer selection. If I have anything to complain about, it's that there may simply be too many things to choose from...perhaps a simpler menu might actually make for an easier time making a selection. Sensational food paired with exceptional service! I Highly recommend the Braised Short Ribs and the Filet Mignon! My server Abby was incredibly personable and seemed quite knowledgeable with her wine/food recommendations. This restaurant offers upscale dining where it is desperately needed.. The Blackened Mahi was better than I had a week earlier in Destin, FL, or anywhere else for that matter. The Tiramisu was decadently rich and delicious. While not listed on the menu currently, they will also make fettuccine alfredo that is some of the best I've ever had. Love This restaurant. From the bread to the appetizers, entree and dessert. Had prosciutto wrapped grilled shrimp as an appetizer. So delicious. Several reviews here mention bad service, but this was not our experience at all. Our waitress was extremely attentive, made sure our glasses were always full, and make some great recommendations. When they read the specials, pay attention because they're great. My fiancé ordered a mussel and sausage appetizer as her entree, and I'm not totally sure, but it looked like they served up an entree sized portion, and it was delicious. I orders the veal scaloppine, which was fantastic as well. If you like spinach, be sure to get the "earthy combo" as a side. read more
