Now this place is a find! It is in a terrible location for a nice restaurant. Right in the middle of what appears to be an abandoned strip mall converted to self storage facilities. There's enough parking for 20 restaurants. The storefront is also understated. Nothing about this place is going to draw walk-in business. But you must walk in! They've got one heck of a kitchen! Had been dying to go since many people recommended. I should have taken into account that the friends who suggested it were NOT Italian. Very crowded and staff seemed overwhelmed. Dinners were brought out one at a time. I opted for chicken parm and the breading on the chicken tasted like shake and bake; the sauce was underwhelming and might have been straight from a can. Absolutely disgusting food. We made a reservation for our party of 8 . Worst service imaginable. I think the owner was our waitress and someone that didn't speak English brought our food. Drinks were watered down and took forever. The orders were messed up and came out cold and looked unappetizing. We were charged for food that we didn't order or receive, As you can tell I don't have anything good to say. The only thing they were good at was adding the tip. Eat someplace else! read more

I took my family out for Father's Day. The food was good but the portions were small. I gave a 20% tip in cash. When I woke up I received another email from my cc showing a 20% gratuity charge added to my card. I spoke to a work colleague and it seems that this is normal practice for them for parties of 5 or more. We were a party of 3 and I saw the waitress open the receipt holder and take the cash out. It's the Best authentic Italian food in shelton. If you're Italian you will appreciate this place. Service is good and espresso martinis are great. Desserts are all homemade in house by little old Italian lady. Dinners are delicious. Dinner prices are anywhere between $25- $35 which I don't mind when the food is good. BUT the portions are way too small. Place would be five stars if they would lower the prices or increase portion size. Expect to pay about $50 per person for a drink a dinner and a shared appetizer and not have leftovers. read more

We went to lunch with a group of eight. We arrived after some of our party had already been seated. There was no one to seat us. No one came to ask if we wanted a drink. I received my meal but not the side of pasta or vegetable that should have came with it. I was not asked which side I wanted. My tea never came and one of our party got up to get it. One of our party also got up twice to get a new pitcher of water since the waitress did not check on our group. It was not crowded so we could not understand the poor service. In response to my review on another site, the restaurant decided to respond by swearing and calling me a liar. Restaurants make mistakes but they can be addressed easily with great customer service and class which this restaurant has neither. As of today, the restaurant is still claiming that none of this happened even though our entire party agrees it happened. read more

I cannot BELIEVE what happened tonight. I couldn't wait to Yelp about it. So here's what happened. My party of 8 came tonight to celebrate my brother's birthday. My father and I got there before everyone else so he decided to order an appetizer. He asked the waitress about the fresh mozzarella appetizer. It was difficult to understand her English, but one of the words she said was "provolone." My dad said "Oh, provolone sounds good, we'll get that for the table." We saw that each antipasti was around $13, so we figured we'd try it. Well when the appetizer came we were very surprised to see 2 enormous dishes, one of the mozzarella and tomato, and one of provolone, salami, and mixed vegetables. My dad thought she was referring to the one appetizer he was asking about, yet she ordered us two separate ones. But okay, whatever, my dad said it's fine, let's just enjoy the celebration. The price was reasonable anyway, so we'll keep the appetizer we didn't order and not make a fuss. Well, when the bill came, we saw that they charged one appetizer $35 and the other $40! When one of us went up to ask about it, she said that when my dad "ordered it for the table" she multiplied it to feed all 8 of us, because 1 order wouldn't be enough. We argued that that wasn't what we wanted, and if she assumed that's what we meant, she should have clarified. If the menu says "$13" for an appetizer, how could you multiply it by 4 without so much as a "By the way, just to clarify..." It was very sneaky and downright despicable. This woman (who happened to be the owner!) went nuts, yelling at us, saying there's nothing she can do. After arguing with us for 15 minutes, she reluctantly took $35 off the bill. For a restaurant owner to argue that angrily with customers with a $450 bill (SO not worth that much) shows the biggest lack of customer service I have ever encountered. Not to mention, when we were ordering our entrees, I asked her if I can substitute the prosciutto in my meal with sautéed spinach. She looked like she heard me, but didn't acknowledge my request at all. When my meal came, I wasn't surprised to not see sautéed spinach. When I mentioned it to her, she simply said "Oh, I didn't tell them" and blankly looked at me, as if that's the end of it. Too late now. And she walked away. I was so disgusted. Finally, someone in my party asked the busser to put an order of sautéed spinach in for me. The food was decent, but overpriced. And on top of the worst customer service I've ever seen and the sneaky bill, I am never coming back. I hope you all have a better time than we did. And I hope my brother's birthday wasn't ruined by it. read more

If I could rate this restaurant a zero I would. My expereince took place on valentines day, which we had reservsations for. Upon arrival we were forced to wait 10-15 minutes. After being seated, finally, they were efficient at taking our orders. We went with the stuffed mushrooms and clams casino to start, the clams were good, however the mushrooms were lacking. The portion was extremely small and the sauce was your typical marinara-nothing special to justify the 11- price tag. Next up we had our entrees, I went with the red snapper over spinach risotto with clams and mussels. My girlfriend went with the clam, mussels, shrimp over angel hair and a white clam sauce. What she got, was a red sauce so it had to be sent back. My meal was terrible, the snapper was dry and the filet had dark spots on the bottom, the clams and muscles were very, very dry and the sauce was far too buttery for my liking. Eventually my gf's meal arrived and we shared some, again nothing special, and the sauce was far too buttery. To wrap it up we topped it all off with some creme brulee, again, another dissapointment. The top was not crispy/crunchy like it should have been and it was very watery. Ahhhh, but the fun didn't stop there, shortly after arriving home I puked, only the fish/seafood that I ate though, which was wierd. I visited there website and submitted an email, detailing my experienence and after 2 weeks did not receive a response. Can't say enough about this great restaurant! We had heard about this restaurant from a few people and gave it a try for dinner. The moment you walk through the door you are made to feel welcome. Daniella our waitress knew her stuff and made terrific recommendations as it's her family's restaurant so she knows the menu inside and out. We were even told we could "make up our own dishes", which I did. A definite "yes" restaurant...if they can they will. For apps we had the huge stuffed meatball and their take on the caprese salad, both were delish. My fiancé took Daniella's suggestion and had veal with procuitto melted mozzarella over homemade gnocchi with vodka sauce (it's her favorite) He devoured it! I special ordered the gnocchi with garlic, evoo and sundried tomatoes, simple but AMAZING. We couldn't decide on dessert as they all sounded amazing (mom makes all the deserts) so we left it to Daniella to decide for us, and before we knew it we had three (yes 3) in front of us. Nutella pie, ricotta cheesecake and tiramisu. All were INSANELY out of this world. We took the desert leftovers home and when the takeout box got to the table there was a sweet note thanking us for coming in...and the deserts were on the house. I've been in the restaurant business for most of my life and this was customer service at its finest. We paid our check and were leaving but not before we got a big hug!! My dad and I had dinner on May 28, 2021. We had a order of fried calamari 12.00, my dad had calamari 22.95 and I had saltimbocca (veal) 23.95. The total due should have been with 7.35% tax a total of $62.57, when the bill came we were charged 78.00. We went here last night for the first time and it was wonderful. There was 3 of us and we all LOVED our dinner. One had chicken and 2 had veal. We were all excited about our choices, the portions were perfect and we finished every last bite and got extra bread so we could get all the sauce from our plates!! What a brutal experience. I'm in the business 30 years. Ordinary food. Inexcusable service. We got there early. One waitress, a busboy and a manager/bartender/ host. Wasn't too busy. Then, at the dinner rush hour, they got slammed.. There's just no excuse. The place should be properly staffed.... And then if it doesn't get busy, you let staff go home. The ponytailed manager guy couldn't see while trying to help the waitress that two tables wanted a check and another had their credit card and check ready to be paid. He also had some VIPs come in that he clearly knew. He immediately brought over some bottles of wine and poured them glasses to the rim of the glass.. Total amateur for a place that's been around so long. Never again. Terrible, low rent place. read more

The sauces? Made fresh everyday. The chef? Carmelo, the owner, who has cooked every day for over 30 years. My parents have been going to La Scogliera since it opened in the 1970s (originally in Bridgeport, CT), and they insist it is the best Italian in Fair field County. I must agree and I'm happy to welcome La Scogliera to it's new, easily park-able location which is also brighter and more spacious than La Scog's old home. I started off with the Burrata Caprese special. I love burrata, and their soft cream and mozzarella cheese was perfectly complemented by drizzled olive oil, basil and fresh tomato. After flipping between the matriciana and puttanesca entrees, I settled on the latter. Puttanesca is my absolute favorite--tangy, full of capers, olives, and unbelievable, rich tomato flavor. The sauce can be botched easily, and often is. If you've experienced a botched puttanesca, it may have been the tomatoes or hairy, unmelted anchovies, which should be added in the beginning of the sauce, and melted completely just to add flavor. La Scogliera's Puttanesca was just perfect, tossed with al dente spaghetti. My only complaint--it was so good that I nearly ate myself into a pasta coma. Luckily, a cappuccino with Frangelico helped. The service was great too. Our waiter was attentive and personable. And towards the end of the night, Carmelo, the chef/owner came out to greet the tables and check on us as well. read more

You can hear them pounding the fresh cutlets in back and then what arrives to the table shortly after is simply the most fork tender, delicious veal you've ever had. After my first visit I thought that La Scogliera should be my local favorite. Well a year goes by and finally went again last night - and I still feel the same way. Just wonderful Italian food. The linguini with a whole lobster was exActly correct - and for just $27. Good artichoke and a good stuffed mushrooms to start. The recommended Chianti was perfect and the coffee was rich and creamy. So happy and fortunate it's right up the street. After three visits I have to say it's consistent and the 'go to' for Italian. The homemade pasta is well worth the premium you have to pay. Go with the vodka sauce. OMG. Go with the attitude that it's a old time traditional family restaurant, so the service is sub par. However the food quality is well above par. Next time I'm going to pre arrange a corkage feee and bring a few bottles. It's a win win since I'd likely order much more off the menu. read more

Friends I have another gem for you referred by a friend we visited the family run place and we were greeted and treated like family, first we tried the blueberry martinis simply fabulous tasty and refreshing, next our apps we had the stuffed meatball ridiculous tasty we could have eaten 5 next the escargot tender tasty delicious, the main course I had the homemade gnocchi bolognese the ragu was unreal and the pasta cooked perfection my better half had the veal Danielle which is thin veal cooked and put over homemade gnocchi Parmesan with vodka sauce fabulous. Last the dessert a piece of Nutella pie it is homemade crust with mascarpone filling my goodness it was light with Nutella drizzled what a treat, overall this place was like hitting the jackpot a great new find we will certainly be regulars friends DO NOT miss out on this one !!!!! Hi friends I went back for a return trip and let's say it was mighty different than the first time, I had a pasta dish that was lacking flavor and the service was slow at best it seemed that the regulars get favoritism.
