My mom surprised me with a visit and we found this wonderful authentic Italian restaurant. Handmade pastas and wonderful desserts.

We went there for my birthday last week. as soon as I walked in and saw the crisp white tablecloths I knew this was going to be good ---it was better than good it was great!!! had the calamari over linguini--- it was so good my taste buds were doing somersaults the calamari was the freshest I have eaten anywhere it really tasted like the sea--- amazing the calamari seemed bottomless on that plate there were so many the putanesca was divine --my sicilian grandma would have loved it! the owners were very kind and patient and personable it is a spotless place cant wait to go back ottimo ristorante read more

Wow did we find a gem of a restaurant last night in La Scogliera! Our first time for this establishment was so enjoyable. Located in a shopping center down the street from Sikorsky Aircraft, for appetizers we tried two specials, Spinach salad with crumbled Gorgonzola and the Stuffed Artichoke. The salad was screaming fresh and tasty, very nicely presented and the Artichoke was to die for. I told my wife that you cannot get this in NY any better! For our entrees my wife had capellini pommodoro and I feasted on linguine with fresh little neck clams fra diavlo. Excellent sauce, pasta cooked perfectly and no canned clams thank god. I was informed that the clams are local and delivered right out of the water. They sure tasted like it, absolutely wonderful. Service was excellent with the owners daughter Daniela waiting on us. Don't go out of your way to go here. If you live outside 15mins of this place it's to far for what your about to pay. Our crab cakes were frozen, served with honey mustard, and the sauce is bland. Seafood is not fresh, and service is not great. Very very over priced and very tiny portions. If your hungry and happen to drive by it stop and eat, but don't go out of your way to go here! Went for the first time for my birthday. The chicken marsala was the perfect portion. It looked a little small at first, but after finishing it and having some of the pasta I was so full and satisfied. My boyfriend had the lobster linguini that was on the specials menu and he did not have a bite left to take home. He loved it! There is a lot of italian food in the Valley, but this place I found to be some of the best food as far as red sauce joints go. They have interesting specials, top notch standards and although the decor and interior isn't much to make a big deal of, I think it doesn't really matter. Growing up in a Italian family I am generally quite particular and tough to please when it comes to Italian restaurants but this place is great. The stuffed meatball special is a must have if offered. Homemade cavatelli are tender and delicious. The fresh tomato sauce reminds me of my grandmothers! You must save room for the Nutella pie. It is out of this world!! Cute little couple who owns the place and often serves you too. They are lovely people and very friendly. read more

Excellent food. Great service. Gnocchi with vodka sauce was perfect - rich, creamy, fresh and substantial. Chicken scarporiello off the bone was amply portioned and perfectly balanced the spice and flavor of the peppers, chicken and sausage. Eggplant special in red sauce was surprisingly flavorful and fresh. It could have easily been a cheap eggplant parm variant but instead was vibrant, broiled to the perfect tenderness and served over thoughtfully selected pasta. Our waiter, Bobby, knew the menu well and made excellent recommendations, including an delicious spicy, sweet red wine. We dined with two five-year-olds whose needs were thoughtfully anticipated. I have had many a dinner here. 80% of the time we sit in the bar area. This place is best described as a neighborhood restaurant. Very small staff most are family and speak with heavy accents. Don't come here looking for a fine dining experience, its great people and very good food neighbor style. The great you with a smile and a hearty hello. The menu has everything, although the typeset is a little small lol. The pasta is made fresh daily and is very good al Denti style. The single meatball stuffed with ricotta is a fav on the apps menu. Their veal is some of the best I have ever had, no matter how your order it. One of the best things is that if nothing on the menu or specials trips your trigger they will make anything you like, mix and match any part or of dish with any other dish. Long story short, I was confused with another reviewer on here. So this got me curious and inspired me to make an account and write a review about this place. It is a secret gem of the valley that serves food that tastes like it came straight from Italy. All dishes made to order with amazing flavor. I usually only order pasta, I've tried many of the sauces from puttanesca to vodka sauce to ragout... all yummy. Salad with house dressing and fried calamari are good as well. read more

My family and I ate here one evening and we enjoyed the service as well as people there. In regards to the food, it was your typical family-owned Italian restaurant but it wasn't anything too great. We got a calamari appetizer which we thought was pretty good and then also had their Gamberi Fra Diavolo which was quite hot and spicier than we imagined. The pasta it self was okay and the shrimp wasn't very tasty. I would probably recommend another Italian restaurant in the area before coming back to this one but the atmosphere was great and felt like home. read more

Drove up for lunch on Tuesday afternoon.I used to eat at restaurant when it was on Madison ave in Bridgeport.Really nice place in a strip mall on River Road.I had chicken with artichoke hearts and peppers.It was delicious.Came with a nice house salad.Finished it off with a glass of chianti and an espresso with Sambuca.Francesco,the owner is a real nice guy.Will be back with my father. read more

When they were located in Bridgeport Connecticut for years we would frequent the restaurant on occasion. We had occasions where our family would get together for special occasions. On more than one occasion the bill was not correct and when asked about certain charges we were told by the owner, "Oh, I thought something was wrong with that." On one occasion the bill was off by $100! I recently went to the Shelton Connecticut location. I was astonished at their prices. I lived in New York City for many years and know good quality food and I'm willing to pay for it. Let me just say that this isn't New York City, their location isn't New York City, their service is certainly not New York City, and the food is not New York City standards. We ordered one hot antipasto, and needed to be very firm that we were sharing just one! I have had the problem where they would bring it out to all people and we were charged a ridiculous amount of money My guests and I ordered chicken scarpiello. Instead of their normal pasta we wanted our pasta to be with oil and garlic. What came out for $19.50 for just the chicken dish was ridiculous. What we could see in the dish was one portion of a chicken leg that had the bottom bone hacked off. A chicken wing that looked no bigger than something off the Cornish hen. A couple of small pieces of overcooked chicken breast and when I say small pieces they were very small pieces, and two pieces of the part of the thighs that are before the knuckle which is all bone!!! We were so disappointed. In addition, we were charged $2.50 more for the oil and garlic pasta. This was not unexpected but again their prices are never consistent because prior times we were charged as much as $4.50 for the same!! We ordered two desserts that was supposed to be Tiarmisu. What we got was nothing more than a chocolate cake with about less than a 16th of an inch of maybe some mascarpone in the middle of it. These cakes were $7.50 a piece. The bill before tip was almost $165 with a couple of glasses of wine. We got cold bread and a couple of butter pats in the basket. Our water glasses were never replenished. The owner is usually one of the waitstaff and she's not very pleasant. They don't really care about the people that are coming in. They should really get their act together and realize they are in a strip mall. That their food is okay but it isn't great. They have no ambience. I'm just thoroughly disappointed and will never recommend this restaurant to anyone again or frequent it. read more

Went there with friends and left with a bad taste, after an enjoyable evening. We had Calamari for one app which was good and buratta which was very small and overpriced for the other. Both Suppa de Pesces were good, the issue was with the other 2 dinners. Shrimp Francise came with linguini and we substituted angel hair, we were told there was a slight upcharge and said fine a couple of dollars isn't a problem. The cost of those 2 dinners should have been $44 (22 ea), we were charged $60.50. We thought $16 for a pasta change was ridiculous. We told them and they said the bill was correct. We spent over $200 and felt that was in very poor taste. Unfortunately, other than that we enjoyed our evening especially the desserts but will not return. read more

My wife and I had dinner here last night (Sat. night). It was our second or third visit, but first in a couple of years. The food was great, as it was previously, and our waiter Mike was also very good. I had the Delmonico steak with 2 stuffed shrimp, which was quite good and cooked as ordered. My wife had a fish dish that is on the regular menu but they do not state what type of fish it is. When she asked the waiter he said it was a flaky white fish very similar to Sea Bass. However, when it came it was very much of a more steaky fish like a swordfish. In any event, it was excellent. It came in a balsamic vinegar reduction that was a bit sweet. We used it on the fish and my steak and you could dip anything in that stuff and it would taste good. The homemade stuffed meatball appetizer was good. The one complaint is that we ordered one of the salads (with caramelized walnuts) to split. It was a $9 or $10 special salad, not a side, and when it came we thought they had already split it and only delivered one portion because it was so ridiculously small. That seemed a bit stingy in portion and was more the size of a complimentary side salad. We had coffee and dessert elsewhere, as previously planned. We are frequent dinners at Biagio's, close-by in Stratford, and are usually so blown-away and satisfied there that we rarely venture to other Italian places in this area. We were looking for a bit of a change-up and La Scogliera fit the bill. We will return. read more

I have wanted to go here for years, I go by it every day going to and home from work. I have also bought my parents gift certificates over the years and they have enjoyed dining here. Last night we didn't feel like cooking and were brainstorming and came up with here. We got there about 6pm and there was a lively bar crowd and only a few people in the dining room. The owner asked if we had reservations and we said no so he sat us right near the door against the entry window on the outside of the building even though 80% of the tables in the restaurant were open. It wasn't a very comfortable area to sit. If they put some nice sheer type curtains or drapes here it would charm the area up nicely, instead you see everyone coming in the restaurant and the parking lot. On the nice side our server was Danielle, a very nice person, I'm guessing she is the owners daughter and her mom does the cooking. We both started with a glass of the house wines, I had a chianti and my partner had a malbec. Not sure what brand they were but they were good and filled right to the top of the glass. Bread was also brought to the table and olive oil is there for dipping. We both ordered the pappardelle al ragout. All of their pasta is homemade and the pasta was thick and hearty. It came with a beef and pork red sauce. We both liked it. The portion wasn't huge but a normal size and was priced at $18.50. Oh, I forgot, we shared the meatball stuffed with mozzarella and provolone with red sauce. It was good. What I also liked after the app was brought out it was a nice time in between before they brought the entrée. No rushing here you out the door here. The Pièce de résistance of the meal was the homemade nutella pie. Danielle told us all of their desserts are homemade by her mother and her moms makes desserts on the light side, not heavy. We both have not heard of nutella pie so we shared it and can I say this was one of the best desserts that I have had in a very long time. I wanted more! So overall we had a nice experience but next time maybe we will make a reservation so we don't have to sit by the front door. read more

While the food is good quality and tasty, you have to know what to get. To avoid paying a lot for very little. Even the salad is not included with a dinner entree. I was surprised at some of the small portions. For low cost ingredients like pasta and chicken. The beer selection is very limited and expensive. A Yuengling lager draft is a whopping six dollars. I am writing this so they will improve on what is a pretty nice place. That I would like to keep going to. They have a good following, so maybe they don't care. I could give more stars if based on food alone but the service was terrible. There were two large parties in the dining room and they got all of the attention. Except for delivering the food we had to flag the server down for everything including taking the order. When we requested something, like a clean glass because there was something floating in my husbands beer, they acted like we were imposing on their busy schedule. I was in from the West Coast & wanted authentic Italian food (namely, eggplant Parmesan). I found this restaurant in Yelp so my cousins & I decided to give it a shot based on all the positive reviews. When we walked in, it smelled delicious so we were pretty jazzed. Eggplant Parmesan was a special that night so two of us ordered it. It said it was "Italian Style" no breading, (I like the breading) but we went for it! It came on a bed of handmade pasta which was great, but it was all swimming in a pool of olive oil & was just kind of mushy. It was also $24.95 for a very small portion which didn't even come with a salad. My other cousin got the pappardelle which she said was over cooked but the sauce was delicious. The other problem was the very loud customer in the bar talking to the employees & the construction noise (loud banging) which made it difficult to talk. There are definitely much better & more reasonably priced choices for Italian fare. FYI, we are Italian & know the real deal! read more

La Scogliera is my all-time favorite Italian restaurant. I ate there quite often with my family while growing up in Bridgeport... and to this day I've never had a bad meal. The homemade pasta and fresh sauces are amazing. My favorite dish is cavatelli with meat sauce and my boyfriend loves thier chicken scarpiello. He gets the chicken off the bone over fettucine. Everything is made to order so they don't mind customizing your dish. In fact we always get fried mozzarella topped with meat sauce. Outstanding. Tonight we also had a toasty rice ball filled with cheese, peas and ground meat. The combination of the mozzarella and the rice ball was amazing! Other great menu items are the stuffed meatballs, gnocchi, and veal parmigiana. Carmella's Nutella cake is to die for. Bobby, our favorite waiter, is so nice and always takes good care if us. Portions are great - we always take home the equivalent of another meal - so although some may think the prices are on the higher side, the quality, taste, and portion more than make up for it. I recommended La Scogliera to friends - and they became regulars at the bar. At the very least stop by for an Italian beer on tap and a stuffed meatball like they did - and you'll become a fan too. read more

My Husband and I stopped in there tonight to have a cocktail in the bar,,,wanted to check it out. The dining room wasn't very busy for a Friday night but the bar was packed. We walked into the bar, trying not to get in the way, and saw a waitress who scowled at us for being in her way (the owner I think) and the Bartender who said they we're 'full up'. They didn't even try to accommodate us even though there was an empty table for two around the corner in the empty dining room that would have been fine. It wa so humiliating especially because everyone was watching us. Needless to say, we will never set foot in that place ever again AND I will tell everyone I know not to go there because their customer service in atrocious! I guess our money is no good there! No worries as there are plenty of other restaurants that will be more than happy to treat us with respect! read more
